Title: Steg's "2nd intervention army from Altdorf" (building and painting blog)
Post by: StealthKnightSteg on February 19, 2010, 09:18:01 PM
This blog will be used to monitor my empire models in their various stages, to show off my army, and have some fun getting pointers and comments about my army and work.

The Fluff:
The 2nd intervention army from Altdorf is one of two special army groups brought together at the idea of Karl Franz himself. This army is mainly deployed in the northern regions (Nordland, Ostland, Hochland and Middenland) of the Empire to combat any stress situations encountered by those provinces where the standing army is in need of some bolstering to counter the various threats from within or from the northlands. Where as the 1st intervention army is looking after the South-Eastern part of the Empire (Ostermark, Stirland, Averland and Wissenland).
Due to the nature of this army being deployed mostly against the Skaven, Beastmen, Deamons and Warriors of Chaos it has gotten some special interest from the Grand Master Templar of the White Wolf and the Ar-Ulric. This is why there is usually a contigent of White Wolf knights present and some warrior priests of Ulric in this Altdorf army.
Also Knights of the Blazing Sun are often seen riding along side this army as they have devoted their time to combat anything that has nothing to do with the natural beings of this world. Sometimes the Grand Masters or the Ar-Ulric themself join the army.
Less often are some contingents of Reiksguard Knights and Knights Panther joining the army.
The army is composed of several infantry units all paid and equipped by the Altdorf / Empire treasury and are by those means very good equipped. Also a few units of the mobile artillery from Altdorf is accompaning the army (ofcourse bought from the foundries of Nuln and the crew trained there as well). This army when moving around will also attract some Flaggelants and usually will get some aid from the local militia.
This way Karl Franz hopes to keep his northern borders of the Empire protected enough to let the people of the Empire live in relative peace.

The leadership of this intervention army was given in the hands of General Johan van den Kornput.
Under his leadership he has several Captains and Champions to lead his battalions.
Willem II van der Marck, assigned Arch Lector of Sigmar.
Jacob Blommaert, assigned Warrior Priest of Sigmar.
Hendrick Lonck, Captain (sometimes seen riding into battle on his pegasus).
Willem Corneliszoon van Duyvenbode, Captain bearer of the Battle Standard.
Adriaen van Bergen , Engineer leading the several units of mobile artillery.
Jan van Hout , Witchhunter

Lancelot van Brederode , Halberdier Sergeant.
Cornelis Jansz Dirkszoon , Spearmen Sergeant.
Otto van Gendt , Duellist.
Adriaan Pauw , Crossbowmen Marksman.
Reinier Pauw , Handgunner Marksman.
Johan de Knuyt , Archer Marksman.
Diederik Sonoy , Count's Champion.
Johan de Mepsche , Huntsmen tracker.
Barthout Entens van Mentheda , Pistolier Outrider.
Jacob Dircksz de Graeff , Outrider Sharpshooter.
François Vranck , Steamtank Commander.

Wizards:
Janus Dousa, Bright Wizard. (Lore of Fire)
Joost de Moor, Amber Wizard. (Lore of Beasts)
Lenaert Jansz de Graeff, Gold Wizard. (Lore of Metal)
Jan van Galen, White Wizard. (Lore of Light)
Jan van Horne, Jade Wizard. (Lore of Life)
Jacob Duym, Celestial Wizard. (Lore of Heavens)
Carl von Rabenhaupt, Grey Wizard. (Lore of Shadows)
Arent van Duivenvoorde, Amethyst Wizard. (Lore of Death)

Aiding the Intervention Army on more then one occasion and sent by their respective Templar Grand Masters are the Knight Champions leading their knights:
Johan van Oldenbarnevelt , Reikscaptain of the Reiksguard Knights
Wolfert van Borselen , Preceptor of the Knights of the White Wolf.
Floris van Montmorency , Preceptor of the Knights of the Blazing Sun.
Walburgis van Neuenahr , Preceptor of the Knights Panther.
Jelle Broers Hylckama , Preceptor of the Royal Altdorf Gryphites.

The Priests of Ulric that show up occasionally:
Godfried van Mervel and Franciscus de Roye lead by Ar-Ulric Emil Valgeir.

Sometimes the Army attracts some Flaggelants led by:
Willem Bette , Prophet of Doom

The modeller/painter part of me:
I'm not in anyway artistic with sculpting and adding to a model this way, but I do not shy from adding some bits here and there that I have lingering around nor swapping bits out for others. Because of this most of the units you will get to see from me are pretty standard build.
As for the painting part... I'm a perfectionist and even with the rank and file units I kinda get carried away, hence why I didn't have much painted yet for back in the day.

The collector part of me:
Formost I think of myself as a collector, but due to a tight budget I am not able to get most stuff together as fast as I would like too. I hope the 2nd post in this thread will represent my collecting ability aswell besides the progress I am making on getting my models ready.
I'll update this 2nd post (and the 3rd aswell if I get my hands on something not Empire related) regularly, so check it often!

The gamer part of me:
Back in 1999 when I started this hobby I played pretty often with/against friends (Chaos, High Elves) and later I even joined the local gaming club and participated in a small tournament aswell (winning from a squickhopper/snotling pump wagon army). But the gaming group fell apart, the local club requiring 80% painted armies and other things in life made me stop the hobby for a while.
Picked up gaming again in 2010 when I met my newly aquired brother-in-law who played skaven. Had some stuff going on in my personal life again so stopped the hobby again for 6-9 months. Since the start of 2011 I'm back in the game versus skaven with 8th edition rule set and looking forward to start playing games on and off, maybe even at the local gaming shop (same founder as the gaming club back in 1999).
I also intend to visit the Eurobashes organized by this forum to have a blast at gaming. Where I have been 5 consecutive years now!

So finally some pictures again.

I finished rebasing my mounted Warrior Priest of Ulric and assembled some pistoliers (picture includes the 1 old pistolier I already had)

Bases done: Chaos black undercaoat, then Bestial Brown coat, adding normal sand (with pva glue) to get more structure and the odd peble to resemble rocks, the paint he Bestial Brown again over the sand. Rocks with Shadow Grey. Highlight some sand with Leprous Brown and the rocks with Codex Grey. Lastly add a few spots pva glue and dip it in Scorched Grass.

Note: The pictures were taken by video camera as the photo camera of my girlfriend isn't very good at close ups... so the lighting isn't optimal.

Mounted Priest of Ulric:

That's quite an impressive collection of classic and OOP models, very nice indeed.

I really like your painting style and colour scheme, the fact that you favour bold colours gives this army a striking appearence. I particularly like that you've divided your Swordsmens' shields on the diagonal, its a nice change.

Is the banner on your KotWW a paper one that you've printed off? It looks like you've mounted it on thin card, which gives a nice thick looking banner.

@Novogord
Yeah I like to get really into the details even with rank n file models :)

@Vredesbyrd
I don't find it very impressive as 1999-2003/4 ish was the period I bought the most minatures when I was really into the game.. last couple of years I have been working on it off and on and adding only a few models here and there to complement my army.

The pictures don't really do it justice there though.. the color scheme is 3 layered. Scab red under ground, highlighted with Red Gore and finished with Blood Red. And the blue: Regal blue, Ultramarines blue and topped off with enchanted blue. The suits I like to vary from model to model, but I did the shields the same style all over the unit (except the unit champion which got an tin/bronze edge).

I copy/printed that banner out of the 4th edition armies book. Just normal A4 paper and then folded together and bend a little to represent wind.

Almost done with my Great Cannon aswell, so more pictures next weekend I guess (need the damn daylight hehe)

Your painting looks solid enough to me. :closed-eyes:
But I have more problems with the pictures... They are to dark to get a good image of the mini. A little bit more light would be recommended.

Thanks, the lighting is a problem indeed, but I must say that the images look better at home on my monitor settings there then I can see them here at work...
I'm taking pictures with either a digital camera with flash, but terrible zoom. Or with a Video Camera with good Zoom but no flash light.. These last pictures were taking in the evening with a White Light bulb on it but still crap with the video camera.. I get better pictures during the day with natural light (I'm a bit earlier home today so I'll get a new picture up then if possible)

If you don't mind me saying it, your painting has improved considerably. The state trooper is much better than the KotWW. It's most noticeable at the eyes.

Which model of Boris Todbringer is that? Don't think GW had it in their catalogue for a while...?

EDIT:
Ah, never mind. Saw it in your updated post  ;)
Did they release it as a blister/small box, or was it only in the Elector Counts box (4 figures)?

All the Elector Counts got a release in a blister and besides Marius Leitdorf (now in a box) they are still available as blister as far as I know.

Nor have I seen them on the GW website.

I am sure I won't have enough time to do that and then I won't have another large model for the contest!!!
Tell you what I'll only paint the war wagon and do nothing else till the Eurobash if I get a SteamTank in return for free at the Eurobash?  :engel:

Added the models from the Battalion Box to post #2
Also noticed that the Knightly sprues in the battalion box (which are 7th ed?) are the same as the sprues from 6th edition, going with this assumption for now till I can verify it with a normal box of knights from 7th ed.

Hope to update here soon again with some pictures of my cannon + crew and an Engineer for the painting competition.

So here is my my engineer entry which took me some time to get done but I made it before the deadline!!
I was still not sure about the little creature that holds up the support pole so I shaved it a bit so it would look like a goblin/snotling that had seen to much torment in the dungeons of Altdorf.

I love how you made the kid (or little old man if you look at how GW painted it) a Goblin. Some people find the miniature really morally reprehensible when they notice the kid, as most people see it, with the foot on his back. Not that I have a problem with it, I love the fig! Making it a Goblin just makes it alright!

So here is my unit of Knights of the Blazing Sun, ready to be primed and painted.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/1545061_479499155491927_603696409_n.jpg?oh=898e0182e5e65e61a36591ff6f840323&oe=57337AE9&__gda__=1463723399_e432e00663989019c1700bd9a9f00187)
Some are not sitting straight, but that is because they aren't bretonnia knights that can be pinned in the back of the horse (these still need to be glued after painting them)

TGM on the right side
first line knight, musician, champion, SB (old model), knight
second line old knight, new knight, old knight, new knight, old knight
back line 2 more new knights.
Added to all the new knights little flags to the lances and added a sheathed sword to their side.

took some pictures of my newly assembled units

The 7th Ed Crossbowmen, I used the "repeater" crossbow as his weapon and added the scope from the Helblaster/Helstorm box to represent his higher Ballistic Skill on the Marksmen. (scope doesn't show in this picture) and added the skull to the base.

And my 7th Ed Halberdier unit (already had 10 now boosted them by 20 with command). As the box really fails to provide stuff to make a good Halberd captain I used a Halberd in one hand from the militiabox (6th ed) and decorated it with bones on either side of the blade and added the skull with the laurels to the back of the blade. Gave him a streching left hand also from the militia box (6th ed).
Also added one Halberd head to the banner to represent the unit's origen (swordsmen are represented in the box by the 2 crossed swords.. but nothing again for the Halberdiers, same goes for Spear ornaments)

Yeah arranging them is a crime... I could maybe swap a few around but mostly they need to stick like this especially the row behind the first.
(they got numbered on the bottom of their base  :icon_rolleyes: just because of this.
I still need to figure out how best to align them in horde formation..probably just add some older models in the middle files.

So here he is my Warrior Priest of Ulric (on foot), my entry for the painting competition of June.
I'm so satisfied with this one that I will redo the mounted version to match this color scheme.

The scheme is mostly derived from the mounted Warrior Priest of Ulric showed in the Storm of Chaos campaign book.

I also have 2 W.I.P. pictures from my cannon, the crew members still need some last work. But my knights of the Blazing Sun have a higher priority at the moment.

Most basic and easiest site I got: http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?p=641531 (http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?p=641531)

So tell me what you think! I took some test pictures of my latest 2 models

Master Engineer:

I did adjust the exposure a bit, but it mostly lits up the background a bit more.

On the priest of Ulric, there seems to be too much of a contrast from the deep blue up to so much white.

However, I do like the brighter pictures. :icon_cool:

for the march update I added 3 more Demigryphs, I didn't do the reigns yet as I noticed with the first 3 that it will hamper painting..

with the 3 models that I had assembled earlier:

So I made my mind up about my army composition (unless someone can really convince me to make last moment alterations in my Parade Ground thread (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=33114.msg880861#msg880861)) besides my equipment on characters (that is easily swapped).
And thus I will make this my goal for painting first and foremost.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/v/t1.0-9/1534389_506073339501175_1085593592_n.jpg?oh=ae78af8f91ff0623de352f1c6b819310&oe=57069C65&__gda__=1459658703_ea468df9d7876cd91d06d666808cb1bd)

What you see:

Lords:
Arch Lector (DONE)
Wizard Lord

Heroes:
Captain (BSB)
Captain (pegasus - will probably look for a better model then Balthasar Gelts Pegasus)
Engineer (DONE)
Warrior Priest (needs to be redone - robe of the priest + barding of the Horse)

Core:
10 +5+5 Archers (at the moment bretonians, so they need to be replaced by Empire archers eventually)
50 Halberdiers
15 Swordsmen (10/15 DONE)
15 Free Company
10 KotBS

Special:
4 Demigryphs
1 Cannon (DONE)

Rare:
1 Hurricanum
1 HBVG

to make the 3k list:

Core:
10 KotWW (DONE except movement tray)

Special:
1 Cannon
5 Pistoliers

I will set out to have this finished + minor alterations I find needed before Eurobash 2015.

I see this quite late, so probably decisions are made - but please do not change Baltazar pegasus - it very nice and rare model :)

As for bretonians - they are very good in my opinion for Empire archers, as our archers are more like huntsmen... Just swap them heads, add some swords and daggers from state troops bits and it will be great.

How much time You give Yourself for all of this? Right now I'm trying to paint army for 2400 pts (some kind of standard in Poland) and I hope I'll finish it this year.

I'm not altering the B Gelt peggie, I will eventually finish it for B Gelt himself, but I can't mount any other character on it to show it as a Captain that doesn't look croocked in some way. That is why I want another Pegasus that can have a mounted captain fitted.

The archer will do indeed for now, not a high priority swap, and will probabaly paint the brets before being able to buy empire archers anyway.

time: till april/may 2015

For my March goal I set out to paint the first 5 of my Knights of the Blazing Sun.
I got this so far ready that I only need to paint up the sand I added on the bases and to add grass. When I have completed that I'll add the Banner that I got from S.O.F., so I can prefent any bending and other mishapps while I still work on the base.

But for now here it is:

The first row:

Thanks and you will :)

That would be an idea, but will need to drill and pin them then as the whole frigging thing is metal.. and I haven't got any experience doing that. Not to mention that I lack such a drill at the moment.

 :biggriin:

Probably not too much of a problem - it's an abstract usage of the main meaning of the word.
Usually you would intervene between two people, but it could be between a person and something else, like a bad habit, or bad behaviour.

As to alternatives it would depend on what image you are trying to get across about your army?

The word 'Expeditionary' is used a lot for forces invading or going into new territory to boldy go where no man has gone before ...................

That general is organization on a horse. I somehow don't see a paperclip , quill or piece of parchment out of place on his desk. Nice character!

Well I had to wrap up my first ~500 points for the league so was going for a Battleready force. Will add details later.
All the story and a short story on my first battle on my blog: https://wargamingbysks.wordpress.com/2017/02/05/escalation-league-delivery-day-500-points/

Here my pictures:

Nice colour scheme! The General has always been one of my favourite models. Good job with the troops too.

Ps. I don't know if you noticed but you've accidentally used wrong bases  :icon_mrgreen:

Nice report! To bad about the missed opportunities. Good to see the Free Guild in action with beautiful painting as usual. How long does the escalation campaign take?

As it stands now for another 2 months, going up to 750 and then 1000. Maybe we'll move up from there but unknown as of yet

So I did manage to go up to "750" points well not really but 680 and finish it up with a Hurricanum too the 1000 point mark, but then the Escalation League died a bit out and my hobby mojo was stalling.. It is back now and here is a unit that was almost done, but is now definitely off my working on list.

Ingenious use of sprues as a painting rig. #Necessity is the mother of invention
