Yet another Empire army blog(10.7.)
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:54:27 PM »
Hello and good [insert appropriate time of the day here] :smile2:

I've been playing WHFB with different armies occasionally for a few years now with different armies, and I've had this nascent Empire army all that time. Now, inspired by a history course in highschool I finally got to finishing it. Thought I would share this project here to keep me interested and get healthy critique, advise and ideas.

Army's paintscheme is to be a mix of colors really, each unit having its distinctive look using the 16Th century's European mercenaries as a source of inspiration.
The army also has a load of handgunners, cannons and pistoliers, as they resemble the Swedish Empire's army in the Thirty Year's War, pistoliers as Finnish Hakkapeliittas.
I will be using 6Th edition one-posers as I find them way more beautiful than the newer production from GW.

Today I finished up modelling my captain and felt like letting you guys see it too. I am satisfied with the way it came out, although the amount of added details isn't what I planned at first. My experience with Green stuff isn't much to mention, so the output is somewhat.. modest.
Here it is, Empire Captain on Horse:

Additional pics:
Right side and the left.

Just not to bore you with unpainted plastic, here's a pic of one of my many(two ) cannons. It quite clearly exemplifies my painting style; a little unfinished and simple(what'd ya expect, I've got a whole army to paint)

Here you go, hope I'll get something else ready soon enough. I've been working on a custom made WP for past few days

Looking great so far! I like your general, and how you painted the artillery crew.
I'm working on a Swedish Thirty Years War/Nordlandic army as well. If you want to you can see the project log here.

Sculpting needs to be practised, it may seem modest to you, to me you've done a great job.

What is/are hakkapeliittas?  any pictures?

@ Weilyn: Thanks. I've already checked out your log before, good work so far.

@ Henerius: You might want to read this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakkapeliitta
Although its in wikipedia, you'll get the picture. The main point is that Hakkapeliittas are Finnish  :icon_wink:
There aren't many pictures of them. (picture gone)

It's a great idea to use Pistoliers as Hakkapeliittas, I think I will be forced to steal it. ;)

Why not modelling pistoliers (Hakkapeliitas does sound great) or outriders after de la Chapelles Dragons? Called laskepellar by swedes who couldn't speak french and made up by convicts and hooligans.

New stuff!

Remember the WP I mentioned earlier? Well today I got it into a shape good enough for taking WIP pics, so here it is:

And additional picture from the front side ( a little fuzzy)
Its still in progress but I just wanted to share it and hear your opinions about it  :icon_wink: I have planned adding another putty that doesn't shrink and that is good for making sharp edges. Its quite.. messy at the moment, but I'm gonna work on the details and try to smoothen up the surfaces.

I'd like to hear your opinions and comments.

Nice work so far. I really like the WP, he looks tough and effective. I would live him like he is now. but if you can find some purity seals from space marines or make some yourself.... that would give him more wp-like look. Are those legs from an old chaos warrior? they sure look like that...I mean they fit very nicely to the model, that is.
One of the big wigs... once told them "If a household doesn't have an income of $70,000, we don't consider them a GW target customer."

Thank you so much for your comments

I must admit the WP still lacks the "thing" that warriorpriests should have.. the purity seals or twin-tailed comet might do the trick.
I totally forgot to list the parts used, so here they come. Legs and torso from 6Th(?) ed. Chaos Warriors box, hands are from a Chaos Marauders sprue, the end of the hammer from the old metallic Chaos Knights and the head is from the old Empire Statetroop box.

I'll add some pictures as soon as I make progress   :icon_razz:

Ye, some new stuff incoming

I took some pictures of my other units today. In the pics you can see my theme for the handgunners, as well as all artillery units I've got so far.

These aren't quite finished yet, but here are the first handgunners. Of course the most awesome one-posers:

Heads down boys, artillery inbound! My two cannons painted, the mortar is an older conversion of mine, as well as it's crew and their paintjob.

So, whatcha think?

Ye, want it or not, update you're gunna get.

It's spring and my eagerness for painting minis is ever increasing. I started, actually continued painting an old spearmen regiment(6Th ed of course) which I had started painting but never finished. Now the unit is back on my workstation's table, and currently looks like this:

As you can see, the colors differ from those used in my handgunners. Lets just say I like brightly coloured armies :icon_biggrin: Got 14/25 painted so far and some of the ready ones' paintjob needs to be fixed a little.

I've also got one of my handgunner units "ready" and am currently working on the next one. Here they are:

That's about it for today. So, how do I..THEY look?

It just needs a little bit of finishing touch, that's all :icon_wink:

Today I got some more 6Th ed. handgunners and spearmen, yay. I'll get to paint them as soon as I get white primer.
I've also worked on the WP, I'll try to post pics soon.
Anyway, ty for commenting :icon_exclaim:

Forgot to add a picture of my 1000-point lot. It has been my goal to get these minis painted so I could finally play with a fully painted army

That's a good goal! :-) I like the guy on horse.

I gather that your focus is on painting quickly? If you use some washes or inks, you can quickly shade your models, making them look more impressive with very little effort. For example, you could use Dheneb Stone instead of white for the clothes, and shade with Devlan Mud. Just a suggestion, of course!

Ty for your comments!
I've been a bit busy lately, spent my time working and painting my Infinity-minis.

@Gneisenau If I don't get something painted quickly enough, it just won't get painted at all, since I get easily distracted by other on going projects. :icon_biggrin: You gotta forge it while the iron's still hot. I'm familiar with the use of washes and inks. I've thought of using them, but i just hate washing big areas/multiple models(bad experiences with my TK). Dipping would be an option too but not yet. We'll see, I like the brightness as it is.

I've also made some progress with the WP, I'll be adding pics later.

Bye

I like how clean your army is. It makes them look like they are the unsullied wall fighting against a tide of unwashed masses.
