My Stirland army, 1361 IC civilwar period (larp pictures)
« on: May 13, 2009, 03:36:55 PM »
I made the army for the larp "Warlarp V - In the empire I was born..."

I started it last september and I used about 225 models, and lots and lots of food...

Its first handfull of battles was fought this weekend... and I lost most of it.

This army needs more polearm units... and some zweihänders...

---
Bagground story:

The year is 1361 IC and there is a civilwar on.
(read the book "Empire at war" for more info)
On one side we have the loyalists who support Emperor Otto I from Stirland
Stirland, Hochland, Wissanland(nuln) and Ostland.

On the other side the Ottilians...
They support Ottilian of Talabheim.
Talabecland/Talebheim, Middenland/middenheim and Averland.

------
since its a larp, the rules are defrent so some things properley don't make sense or breaks he WFB rules...
Polearms rule the battlefield for one thing...

moral points.
All have 1MP as basic
A mucisian givvs +1MP
statetroops get +1MP

when you get hit you loose 1point if hit in arm og leg
3 points from a hit in the body.
when you loos all AP/MP you have to play dead, flee or surrender.

armour counts as extra "hit points".
You get from 0AP-8AP. they are lost before Moral points.

No detachments and no skirmishers

There is to types of soldieres:
Statetropps (+1MP) and militia.

You can't mix weapons in one unit.
They types is:
Polearms (spears and helbards, NO shields)
shield and handweapon (shield max size 90cm x 60cm)
Bows (and handweapons and bucklers max 40cm round)
Two-handed weapons

The general and battlestandard is a hero.
He have 2MP+AP and gives the unit he joins a bonus MP.
(so no herohammer)

The Obercaptains command a Kampfgruppe. but is not a hero and have to join a unit to fight.
Their primary job is to command... not fight. that is why they are not armed and armoured that heavy.

The list

All units strength is the total number of "men" (not counting non combetans like medics, runners)
The commanders usually leads from behind the line. (they all have pistols, so they can shoot anyone trying to flee)

all units have a banner, since its required by the rules.

armour is given in nothing(0-2), light(2-4), heavy(4-6) and very havy (6-8)
My quess on the unit average.

The Stirland Army

Staff:
The general, battelstandard and 2x obercaptains was Marienburgers that was hired for the job.

Odric Ehrenfelz von Schardenspieler, Markgraff auf Niddesdorf

(to the right of the banner)
General of the Empire.
heavy armour and tohanded sword

Louis Franziska Berthier
(se pic abowe)

(this was only used for one battle since we used explosives to show where the cannonball hit the ground)

Dude your painting and scenery is immense.

How do you do the eyes?

(Old joke, i know, but someone had to)

Looks great mate! was it specifically an empire re-enactment, or was it a Landsknecht fest with some skulls thrown in?

Damn... I really wish I could be a part.  :icon_frown: Looks like loads of fun and would be a nice change once in a while compared to re-enactment. And all that damn armour is not cheap, since it is the same stuff the 16th century re-enactors use.

Well, 9th Stirland must be done!
Oh, and remember GW made it personal, not you!

Its warhammer (fantasy) battle as live roleplay.

here is a picture of the 9th Stirland butchering the 42nd Talabecland.

The 101. Talabheim, 47.Talabecland (helbardiers) and 21.Talabheim(helbardiers) all got pushed back, and in the end broken by the 9th. (with some help from the 4th Stir river patrole and 23.Hochland)

To realy understand how polearms work, imaging WFB where spear units allways strikes first in the first combatround and allways fight i two ranks...(even when charching) and when its polearm vs polearm, the longest weapons strikes first. (and the 9th have the longest spears)
Offcause archers and hut them and sword/shield units generaly have a much better chance when out numbered.

Armour:
Some of the armour is "reenacter quality" and made by proper armoures...
But much of it is made for larp use and is massproduced in India... and will not stand up to steelweapons.

The IV Stir riverpatrole
This regiment was an all girl unit.
Iam realy impressed with them. They played soldiers like everybody ells. No speciel treatment.
And they had no problem following orders... even when orderd to charge enemy heavy lineregiments.
(that they had no change of surviving against for very long)

Marching:

Break. (with out the hats its a lot easier to the that its girls)

Charging the 101. Talabecheim.

The rebel... I mean the Ottilian army will follow tomorrow (CET time)

Okay, okay.

Could someone educate me about this live action roleplay business? The most i've ever heard about it was from the film 'Role Models' with fogell from Superbad.

Do different groups come from around their countries to roleplay together? Or is it so big that this is just one group?

Every Stirlander knows that those allegations about lack of shoes, skulls and inbreeds are just slandering that say more about those slandering the brave Stirlanders than about Stirland herself! :closed-eyes:

Me and some fellow LARPers actually considered going to one of those cons... maybe two years back or so? The story was a border clash between the Empire and Brettonia. We ended up not going, but liking the pictures we saw after the event. Same now. Looks like a real nice series of Battlecons you have going there!

What kind of spears do you use? The points look pretty small. Do you allow stabbing with them?

It was held in "Tornby klitplantage" at the coast just south of Hirtshals.
(bespite of this allmost 1/3 of the players was from sjælland)

Spears:
Offcause we allow stabbing with them, that is how you use a spear...
For spears they have to be padded 30cm/one foot below the head.
For helbards it have to be down to you front hand.

(its allso allowed to stap with swords and daggerts)

I know that most gernam larpers think its way to dangerous to allow stabbing... but this larp had 450 persons fighting a lot... and there was no serious injuries because of fighting.
(serious=broken bones or other damage... not counting cuts and bruises, thats part of the fun...
We did have a person break a leg... but that was during a westlingmatch...)

Oh, I'm actually in favor of allowing stabbing, but that's a minority opinion here. Most organizers are over-obsessed with safety. I hear in most British Larps the head is a legitimate target, and they don't get killed there either... In fact, it might actually promote a better kind of fighting. Since the head is a no-hit zone here, many do not protect it at all and lean forward, going for the legs of the opponent. Looks like shit, but is a smart move under these rules as the legs are generally harder to defend. Never mind it would be mind-bogglingly stupid in a real fight leaving ones head open to go for the other guys legs...  :icon_neutral:

Where are all the skulls and inbreeds?
It's Denmark, not Texas.

I'm surprised there's so many people that actually larp a Warhammer-scenario instead of Tolkien or "generic fantasy" where every second player is a 6-foot-dwarf or an overweight elf and the "orcs" actually don't need any masks...

That being said, the pictures look really intriguing, and 450 people sounds like you could stage some actual battles - do you have spectators as well or just players and "officials"? Wouldn't mind watching one of those "live" one day.
