sand?

Indeed, 226 tons of sand. The castle is the amazing work of US artist Rich Varano. I saw it at an exhibition, and it inspired me to try something new, on a much smaller scale and warhammer-related though. This is why I posted it at the beginning of this terrain building blog.

The artwork of various artists at this exhibition included scenes from the Thirty Years' War, hunting scenes, statutes, and sculptures made according to paintings from different epochs.

Just to give you an impression of their amazing work:

So I did some research and started my own project:

Just kidding!  :-P

In fact, I did some research on terrain building because the exhibition had inspired me to try it. I started by watching a lot of tutorials and decided to go for the part of it that seemed to be the easiest for a newbie: Rocks! Here we go:

How do you like my very first attempt?

Looks pretty solid to me, like the start of a tiny Middenheim...

Not as spectacular as the sand castle, just my own modest terrain building attempts:

Looks good. The warp stone could do with a really sharp green drybrush to make it look like it is glowing with evil energy
There are 40 different shades of black, so many fortresses and ways to attack.

So why you complaining!

That's what I want to achieve in the end. The warpstone is still WIP. I'm going to add several more layers of green, with highlights in yellow and skull white.

@Fr1day: If I remember it correctly, you do a lot of terrain building, don't you? If you have any useful tutorials on terrain building (Warhammer Fantasy, 40k or Infinity), I'd be glad if you posted a link here.

Weib: sorry I don't have anything like a tutorial. I just wing it really. Usually I have no plan at all. I have a big bits box, so I cut a base from hardboard then put some bits On it to make the piece.
I really like the simple effect of drawing a pattern on the foam and it leaving carving marks when painted.

First thing I realized: Plundering do-it-yourself-centers is fun ...  :-D ... I even got the local store manager to cut open a package of impact sound insulation yesterday because I was looking for a special one looking like wood on the reverse side.

Two more highlights until it's finished ...

Can anyone tell me how to achieve a light effect around the stone on the monolith? I am not sure how to do it and where exactly ...

With osl on this I would start with a dark angels green cover the top except for around where the stone sits on the pedestal so there is a viod of light if you will immediately around the stone, leaving a band of the dark green have a mix of dark green and goblin green at a thin constancy do a few layers so it is smooth, then repeat with a mix of goblin green and scorpion green and continue working to the outside with these thin layers so it is smooth and the glow is more intense as it moves away from the stone.
If it wasn't for the dried frog pills i would be mad !!!!!!!

Just at the top of the monolith or would you extend it to the sides of it and the bottom of the terrain piece?

You have to imagine where the light source is. Does the whole stone emit the light or does just the center of the stone? Is is a translucent stone? If it is, the light will refract if it comes from the center which will change how the light comes out of the stone, giving you brighter and darker spots. Depending on what the stone is made out of it will refract more or less.  If it isn't translucent and it emits from the entire surface then it will act differently. After you determine where the light comes from you have to imagine where the light will shine on the stone. Imagine the light coming from the source in lines. In this case most of your light is going to shine on the very top of the stone. It appears that the point on the lower left/front edge hangs of the top side of the the pedestal and will then shine down the side. The brightest area will be the closest area on the top. The part the shines on the side will fade as the light moves further down the side from the top. How far down just depends on how bright the light is, the stronger and brighter it is the further down it will go. The top of the pedestal will actually create a shadow area around the base. The light reflecting off the pedestal will not be as bright as the light coming out of the stone. So if you image the light coming out of the stone is as bright or a little brighter than your lightest highlight on the stone, your brightest light will be a bit darker than that it.

How to translate that into paint work, others will have to help with. I've never actually done it.

No OSL yet as I spent the week-end partying with some friends of mine. A hangover isn't really a good prerequisite to try a completely new technique.  :icon_wink:

But I am working on the last highlights ... pics will follow tomorrow.
