New plastic Griffon, now with 50% more Empire.
« on: September 12, 2010, 04:31:37 PM »
SO THEN, I decided to make a General on Griffon. Kinda awkward left arm, but I'll cover that up with an armour plate or something.

I'd put this on my blog normally, but this will probably be the last you see of it, as I may cash in on it on eBay.

Was only a matter of time before someone posted this conversion on the forums  :icon_biggrin:

I like it, personally I wouldn't have a helmet on him but that's just because I'm not a very helmetty person when it comes to my miniatures! Any chance of a side shot or two?

I thought I might have been the first.

I'll see what I can do on the side shots, but I'm a lazy bugger.

I figured we would see one...nothing against you or anything but I feel meh about it. The sculpt is not that great in my opinion. The talons are way too big and there are far too many feathers for me. But Maybe once I see one painted up I'll like it... :closed-eyes:

It's based on a falcon-which as huge talons compared to it's body and a tiny beak

I really like the model and the conversion works-has anyone know if the plastic GoTE fits on it easy?

To me, the talons look proportional to the falcon head, not that I'm an expert or anything.

Beautiful figure, I am going to get one and convert also, but none the less the proportions all look wrong, talons too big/long, neck too short, not an eagles head but a falcon's, wings kind of static and flat compared to the feathers of the body and on and on, boy I bet it is going to be fun to paint anyway.  steveb

Not sure about the rest of you, but the last time I saw a wild BEAST OF FANTASY MYTHOLOGY the proportions looked the same...

Seriously, the kit is fine an one of, if not "the" best monster kit GW has produced - and in a starter set to boot.

The pic in this thread isn't flatering to the griffon due to the perspective but there is nothing wrong with it.

I find it odd how as modellers, we all crave some dynamic plastic kits, especially for larger beasts, yet when presented with something as truly impressive as this (for as few pieces, dynamic pose etc), some choose to nit pick the hell out of it as if there are thousands of better alternatives.

On topic, nice conversion Merrick, have been planning one of my own since I first saw pics of the griffon but still need to acquire parts. Think your right about the left arm, it's not sitting quite right yet.

No offense CM but we are all free to have our opinion. We aren't discounting the OPs work we are just talking about our feelings toward the sculpt. I liked the Empire griff in the standing pose we have to be honest, it's proportions feel right. Also the change from eagle to falcon I don't care for. Again just MY opinion.

Yes but my point was - how can anyone say the proportions are wrong on a beast which doesn't exist in real life and therefore is entirely up to the interpretation of the sculptor?

Of course everyone has an opinion but to criticise it for the proportions alone is just silly.

Personally I think the proportions fit perfectly with the rest of the HE range and overall, it's a great kit.

Well I could sculpt a flying pig with bat wings that shoots laser beams from its ass and call it a Goblin, but I don't think many people would buy it.

We know what a Griffon is and what it looks like in our modern fantasy culture. It's a noble Eagle Lion! America and England coming together. Not a Falcon.

Cool picture of a falcon that looks like an angel

It doesn't have to exist in real life for the proportions to look wrong. No matter how big the talons on a real Falcon may be, there are people out their that think they look too big. For those people the proportions are wrong, no matter how much evidence anyone shows to the contrary. I'm in the "The fig looks great, but the talons are too large" camp. I think it would improve the look a lot if the talons were about 30% smaller. How can these people be wrong? To us it doesn't look right. I just don't understand why people think its wrong to criticise it and voice how it could be better?

As for going with a Falcon as opposed to an Eagle head, I hadn't even noticed that. I don't think that part is a big deal, they look similar enough that I hadn't even given that a second thought.

I like the dynamic pose and think it is an otherwise great model. My only other complaint is that the Elf's legs come molded on to the Griffon so there is no easy road for conversion. I think it was a missed opportunity on GW's part to not put a peg in the Elf's but to insert into a hole in the Griffons back. To covert it you either have to use the legs as are or cut them off. Neither of which are good or easy options to go for. Fortunately it is only the lower legs so that there isn't as much to cut off.

Grifalconīs legs have right size compared to the body, but I also prefer a  "classic" lion+eagle version of griffon.

I'm sorry those talons in that picture are proportionally smaller than those on the new Griffon. But the front legs themselves, are about the right size. It's just those talons that get me.

When I paint my IoB griffon, I'm going to steal use that picture as a frame of reference.

My griffon's hindquarters will be based on a snow leopard, so the colors gel instead of clash:

Very nice - I like the idea, and I do like the griffon. It may look a bit odd proportionally, but that will be a small price to pay considering it's a pouncing/swooping (there really isn't an appropriate word for half cat/half bird) plastic griffon.

Arm is tricky - will be very interested to see when you've made it more manly and chunky. I didn't realise that the legs came on the griffon. I'd like to see a side view as well if you can find the time.

Sorry for ther resurrection, but it seems appropriate, rather than another new thread. I'm looking to do the conversion and was wondering if the OP had any more pics.

I'm thinking that the elf legs and arms need to be removed and some judicious green stuffing used to sort things out. I just need to find an appropriate rider.

Hopefully I'll be able to get some stuff off Ebay for a decent price, just incase it doesn't work.

Cheers
