Been working a bit on some halberdiers for the JTC, and also checked in on my forlorn gaming table. More of that on the blog.

Also, as our yard starts to turn green with the spring sun & rain, I've noticed a similarity to some of my recent terrain. The original two bushes were done before moving into this house, but I'm happy to see the similarity to real world foliage.

Thank you. And yes, there is a drummer. I think a trumpeter in the next batch, too.

Here's the progress so far. First few are done. There will be 32 total.

They look great, and like most other people it seems I'm a bit fan of the purple. It really turned out well in a way that looks realistic and luxurious, without being cartoony bright.

Thank you, everyone. I believe I've mentioned this before, but that's the JTC's trademark livery color, "very expensive purple."

Hard to come by, but a luxury that's more readily available to the Company, so they use it (quite a bit) to advertise their success and wealth.

And yeah, I'm happy with how it's turned out too. So I genuinely appreciate the compliments.  :::cheers:::

Finished the next batch of halberdiers, but I did get hung up on the drum, so the drummer is not quite finished yet. But this makes 15.5 of 32 done. On target (ish) for the monthly goal, I suppose. Miniatures are, again, mostly a mix of Front Rank & Grenadier -- but with an old Citadel mini thrown in as well.

Lovely work!
I really love the purple (almost deep purple). What colours do you use for it?

Thank you. I use some (US) craft paints that I found as a replacement once my really old (late '80s) GW paints ran out. I think they were Imperial and Worm Purple. Not sure if it's any use to anyone outside the I'll see if I can take a pic of the paints later.

Grenadier/Mirliton?

I think I have those models. They look really nice painted. Like the different skintones. Are these painted diligently in layers, or did you utilise washes for the hues?

Yes formerly Grenadier from their Fantasy Warriors game (late '80s/early '90s) now produced by Mirliton. They look like Mark Copplestone sculpts. Very nice figures, and I think they work well with the previous Black Tree orcs I'm also using as half-orcs.

I painted the skin with successive thin washes, similar to the way I've been doing my trolls and giants. I like this method for the half-orcs because it gives a subtle variety of skin colors to emphasize variations due to their mixed heritage.

I don't generally buy many minis (gaming budget is extremely limited), but at the beginning of the year I told myself that I'd try to go all year without buying any new ones - or at least trying to keep it to a minimum. (Besides, a few previously supported Kickstarters will be delivered over the course of the year.) I've done pretty well. I did recently sell some art, so I took splurged with some of the proceeds and bought a few minis that will most likely enter directly into the painting queue.

On the left is the Grenadier/Mirliton mini that I previously commented that I was eyeing as a mounted half-orcs general. I love this figure. After getting it in the mail today, I like it even more I think it has a bit of a Frazetta vibe to it. Now I want to get a muscular yet curvaceous half naked half-orc to accompany him. ;)

Next are three Reaper half-orcs of varying sizes. Previously painted mini included for scale comparison. I think the smallest will fit in well, though slight stylistic differences. I think the middle one will also look good on a 20x40 base, similar to the way I included a couple of Reaper orcs in with the previously painted regiment. The merchant... way bigger than I expected. His body is closer to the Foundry orcs or Marauder Ogres, but his head is much smaller than either so he doesn't look like he'd fit with those. Not so sure how/if he will fit in to the collection. Maybe I could try sculpting a new head on him?

Last is a Reaper skeleton I've been eyeing for at least a year and a half, for use as an undead hero. Also a little larger than expected, but I think he will be OK.

My mind wandering while listening to music at work. Realms of Chaos, the...

Good call on the leader mini, though he's not listed as an orc or half-orc the armour styling means he'll fit well. You're doing a great job of picking and choosing from across ranges for this project  :eusa_clap: (I think having a bigger budget can make me very lazy in this regard!)

Reaper minis are a bit of a minefield, so much choice, but such a variety of scales, although I think the newer models are more consistent.

Nice choices for miniatures expenditure!

Got that half-ogre merchant/carrier too, and have similar problems in finding a place for him among the different ranges. He's either too small, too big, or too realistically proportioned (!) for any that have come to my mind thus far. Also he has quite large fangs, so is definitely inhuman, unless a head-swap.

Possibly gonna paint him just the way he is, put him on a round 30mm base, and not despair at all about his 'usefulness'.

I think the merchant fits among the newer (big!) orcs that I like to use as everything except orcs. At least in terms of size -- not style. But he is supposed to be a half-orc, and a merchant. So it works. Just not quite within my own collection and concepts. I was really hopping he was about 20% smaller than he is. I'll find a use for him. (Or trade/gift him away...) The skeletal hero, on the other hand, will have to wait until I get back to the undead. Even though he's also larger than I'd like, I think it will work out.

Photo's a bit overlit, but I'm closing in on finishing the halberdiers. Just two more minis to paint after this, the standard bearer and a trumpeter.

I also found the original minis that sort of inspired the JTC, also a Reaper mini...

More about that at the blog... https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2018/07/halberdiers-almost-done-but-not-yet.html

Other than the standard itself, I'm done with the halberdiers. I've got 4or 5 standards to paint from different units. I think that may be my next project.
