Alright. Upward and onward, will make every effort to not let be another year until the next update.

Well, every effort wasn’t enough. It has been a year since the last update. It’s not that I don’t paint, it just evidently is too much of a hurdle to drag miniatures from the deepest storage, fumble around on a camera with mixed results and then fumble around on a computer some more. But, I have a plan. More on that in a bit.

First, to get back in your good graces, here is a unit of classic pistoliers.

Two of their numbers are Avatars of War models. Full metal horses with terrible gaps that served as a reminder for me that not all was good in the old days. But, I really like them now.

On to the meat of this update, how do make myself update this project log more often. Here is my cunning plan: Locally, we have recently started an escalation type league where we paint some miniatures each month and then meet up and play monthly with our growing forces. As a twist, we start out with 1500pts of a main army and paint up/grow an allied contingent. In my case the main army is Dwarfs and the allies….the Empire. So, that means I will paint ~200pts of Empire each month and, they won’t be sequestered away in deep storage because I need them for gaming each month. How hard can it then be to snap a few pictures every month? Maybe even snap a few more from the game? Let’s see how that plan survives contact with reality.

Now, month 1 was February but it was a bit different to give everyone a chance to get organized. No allies, just the main army and a baggage cart. Here is what I brought:

(minus the photo-bombing Wight King of course. Also, I left off the second cart, that pony had an easy day)
Sadly, no pictures from the game (it even was such a glorious victory for the doughty dwarfs). This was before I hatched my plan. But, here are more baggage trains.

So, if all goes to plan, there will be an update at the end of the month…fingers crossed.

Love the Megacerops head for the Ogre baggage, I always think GW went wrong in making way goofy shit for Ogre Kingdom animals rather than grab cool real world mammal mega fauna bits to use instead.

Ha! and I thought this was some rhino with a fantasy Y-horn. But no, nature is so full of wonder.

edit: This model is from Ral Partha legacy.

I completely agree on the dislike for the goofy big ogre models. Found alternatives, e.g. this stonehorn is a scaled down 3d-print mammoth.

anyway, game day coming up here, there will be halberdiers. I got this.

2Apr2023

Follow-through?!? You better believe it. Let’s go.

Our Tale of X Painters is in month 2. We painted up 300 pts of Allies, in my case Empire.
I burned most of my points on an awesome Lord. It’s all about fashion statements. By hiding his dagger, the mad count became a slightly less mad count: Graf Rudiger von Hintenrum

At the moment he is leading 14 brave halberdiers. All models from the good old days.

Let the first guy on the left in the first picture be number 1, all the way to the last guy on the right in the third picture be number 14. Here is a chance to show that you’ve spent way too much time pouring over miniature catalogs as a kid (especially if you can answer question three)

1)   Which of these guys are all plastic?
2)   Which of the metal guys are out-of-the-blister halberdiers?
3)   What were the non-halberdiers metals when they came out of the blister?

Let’s give this a week or so. Let's see who knows their stuff!

1.  My guess for all plastic ...

Top photo ... middle and 2nd from right.

Middle photo ... 2nd from left, center, and far right.

Bottom photo ... 1st and 2nd on left, far right.

2.  My guess for all metal ...

Top ... two on left, and far right.

Middle ... far left, second from right.

Bottom ... second from left.

3.  What were the non-halberdier metals out of the blister ... artillerymen?

Extra credit ... What were the non-metals out of the box ... spearmen, although I also see a handgunner, artillery, command and militia, along with a few 7th edition pistolier and multi infantry box bits.

Let’s give this a week or so. Let's see who knows their stuff!

1) All plastic - 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14.
A mix of monopose spearmen & handgunners with headswaps, some Empire command sprue bits and 14 is cobbled from cannon crew bits with a militia head and new soldier arms.

2) Metal halberdiersfrom blisters - 1, 2, 5

3) Metal non-halberdiers - 3 (he is an out the blister standard bearer but he's not a halberdier, so he could go in category 2...), 6 & 9 are metal artillery crew, 13 is a metal crossbowman.

Hoping for an A* please sir  :engel:

1)Which of these guys are all plastic?

4/7/8/10/11/12/14. All 6th edition, but

- 7 & 12 have a 7th edition head
- 8 was originally a handgunner
- 10 was originally a standard bearer

2) Which of the metal guys are out-of-the-blister halberdiers?
1/2/3/5

3) What were the non-halberdiers metals when they came out of the blister?
6 & 9 were originally classic cannon crew (9 with classic standard bearer head); 13 was originally a classic crossbowman
It is not enough to have no ideas of your own; you must also be incapable of expressing them.

Wow, look at all these knowledgeable people! Impressive.

jmash takes the cake! maybe no * on the A because of the slightly imprecise 'artillery crew' label.

1) all plastics
4, 7 ,8, 10, 11, 12, 14

2) original metal halberdiers
1, 2, 6
(Fidelis, if, under Belgian law, command models count as halberdiers, consider yourself on jmash level after all)

3) origin of metals
3 command (duh)
6 cannon crew
9 mortar crew
13 x-bow

thanks for playing.

Trying to follow through on including some game pictures.

My allied commander Graf von Hintenrum lived up to his name in the form of a glorious rear charge into some minotaurs in his first game:

The first proper alliance game was a bit of an uphill struggle, I fought a mighty Chaos Legion and promptly on turn 1 the gates of hell opened in the magic phase and spit out a bonus unit of 10 bloodletters. In the end I clawed back my way to a draw. Best scene of the match:

Look at the Auld Alliance seeing off a jugger lord of the ancient times (couldn't catch him after he broke but the organ gun sorted things out).

Next game for our little Tale of X Gamers is next week, furiously painting at the moment, halberdiers and knights.

That is the original GW jugger. Maybe you have vague memories of damage it caused your brave lads back in the late 80s?

14May2023

Our Tale of X Gamers is chugging along… in fact, much more smoothly than this project log. Month 3 saw us clash with 1500pts of main army and 500pts of allies. We played the ‘Surprise Encounter’ scenario from the very back of the BRB. It’s a good one to make for a chaotic battle, I highly recommend it. My Dwarf&Empire faced off against Ogres&Empire so there was a bit of a civil war component. My brave lads carried the day, Graf Rudiger von Hintenrum pulled off a nice flank charge. But, I failed on the picture front. It was bound to happen.

However, here are the month 3 reinforcements:

More brave Halberdiers from the Golden Age, including a unit champion which I couldn’t squeeze in last month.

And a proper Knightly escort for Graf Rudiger.

I put a little work into making them fit in with Rudiger, i.e. puffy sleeve arms. Mostly from the Demigryph kit and also some chopped up old state troop bits (and if you look real hard and are versed in the finer points of the Empire miniature line, Rutgar’s lance arm). Then most of the work ended up hidden behind the shields. But, I know it’s there!

So here we are, 500pts group shot.

With less than two weeks to go until month 4, I haven’t started with the next batch of 200pts. Originally, I wanted to tackle a steam tank. That seems a tall order now, plan B is a wizard Lord. Easiest way to burn 200pts. We shall see.

29May2023

Here we go again. Month 4 of the Tale saw me clash again with the Ogre&Empire, this time our respective allies were at 700pts. Yet again I failed to take game pictures. But yet again, here is my new 200pts of allies.

A nice chunky Shadow Wizard Lord on trusty steed. Slowly completing my collection of colleges. Three more mounted wizards to go.

And then of course I had to add a few halberdiers to the main unit. This is the Empire after all.

So, obviously I didn’t finish the Steam Tank, and obviously that will have to be my goal for month 5. I can pull the wizard joker only once. No more excuses!
