Alternative Miniatures.
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:34:34 PM »
Hey everyone,
I wasn't sure where to post this but I'll give it a shot here, can anyone tell me what brands of miniatures that are sold in the UK with the same scale of the warhammer models? I want to get my hands on some unique models. For example I think racam or something along those lines sell models of the same scale? And are warhammer models 28mm scale?
Thanks in advance

I haven't seen anyone talk about them in the forum, but Essex Miniatures makes a 25mm group that are much less expensive.  In scale they are more like 4th/5th edition in size from what I can tell.  They mix in fairly well as whole units, but not great as mixed units.
I have a group of their knights on mixed GW horses and Essex horses.  They are in this thread http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=31018.0
Hope this helps.  The models are unique but the sculpts vary in value greatly.

I was looking through that the other day and sadly it seems like half the pictures don't exist anymore, which makes it much less fun to browse  :-P.

I included a link, later in the thread, to a site where I copied all of my photos that weren't working. I'll go through and edit the missing pics out and replace it with the URL again.

Here's where I started to organize everything:

Rackham models tend to be rather tall & skinny compared to GW's, the reason being that Citadel/GW minis may theoretically be 28 mm scale, but their proportions are so cartoonishly overblown (tiny heads, large hands, MASSIVE weapons, etc.) that they're kind of a scale unto themselves.

Personally, this doesn't bother me, real people aren't all the same size ( or 'scale',if you will...) either, so I feel absolutely no compunction to not mix figures from different manufacturers.
Besides, Citadel isn't totally consistent in regards to size within themselves, the new (7th edition) Night Goblins are smaller than the previous ones, for example.

My Empire army is based on a core of 4th edition WHFB/Battlemaster plastic guys and Grenadier/Mirliton Fantasy Humans, laced with Black Tree Design Halflings and some BTD and (old) GW Dwarves.

My Dwarf army is almost entirely Grenadier/Mirliton with a few Mithril ones thrown in, those two companies make the best Dwarves, imho.

If I ever started a dwarf army, I'd be tempted by Vendel's dwarfs:

I don't know how you figure the heads are tiny.  For the most part they're pretty decently sized to the models, although some of the older  6th ed models had massive heads.  The screaming head with the open-faced sallet (comes with a detachable visor) from the old command sprue is so frickin' huge that it looks comically oversized on chaos warriors and space marines.  It's an abomination on empire sized minis.

The new heads are a little smaller, but the bodies are leaner so I figure it balances out somewhat.

Almost all of the the heads for brettonian foot troops are way too big for the bodies of the models.

Granted, GWs minis in the bast did have huge hands, but they're slowly phasing them out.  I still get a fit of the giggles whenever I see those ham-fisted spear elves.  Those hands would put Kareem Abdul Jabar to shame.  Whenever I see the zombies with outstretched fingers, I always think of that Violent femmes song, the one that goes "Big Hands, I know you're the one." :icon_mrgreen:

I was actually planning on making a mordheim possessed mutant who only has these ridiculously large zombie hands for weapons.  I'll count him as having two "hand weapons". :icon_mrgreen:
Desperately seeking Chaos Warrior heads & Skull banner tops from new empire missle troops sprue.  Will trade for bitz, barter, or $$$.  PM or email me to discuss details.

I am sorry Mandarini but have you looked at other companies' ranges apart from GW's??  I mean there are a lot of GW standard sculpts out there like Gamezone & Avatars of War just to name a couple.  The only thing GW has more than all the rest is perhaps the fact that the models are many a time multipose & so lend themselves better to conversions whilst enabling one to assemble them in a variety of positions.  Other than that I cannot agree with your statement.

How do those french cav figures measure against gw figs?  Any one have comparison pics?  I like the photos of them and might try to get some if they are the right size.  They will fit perfectly a role I have been struggling to fill.

They (Perry French HYW cavalry) are small compared to GW. There are very few companies, especially historical, who have cavalry figures anywhere near as large as GW's. The only ones that come to mind are Renegade (historical), Crusader's Wars of the Roses and Hundred Years War (historical), and Privateer Press's Warmachine & Hordes figures, which may actually be even larger than GW cavalry.

I can get a photo of some of the Perry HYW French cav next to GW sometime soon (about to leave the house for a game right now :-D ) but I would say they're close to the Foundry figure (which is actuall a Perry sculpt) in this photo:

You can see one of the other large figures I mentioned above in those photos. Here's a couple other photos with some of the big cavalry:

I don't have any side-by-side comparisons, but here's a pic of some of the PP figures (these are from Warmachine):

The squares on the cutting mat are 1", so those look like 50mm round bases, if that gives an idea of scale.

Where is the rider on the barded GW horse from? I don't recognize it as an empire model, and i don't see it in the current bretonnian range either.

Thats an old DoW General on horse figure.  You won't find it in any current line or even collectors range.  Should be able to find thru ebay, obviously.
