Black figure pottery art was a trend that presented many characters in black in contrast with a lighter background.  There are plenty works of Achilles presenting him as white. I'm trying to find written material saying Achilles skin was darkened being dipped in the Styx.  I grew up on greek mythology read to me in greek when I was a a toddler and later reading the same books learning how to read Greek.  I never recalled anything suggesting his skin turned black getting his invulnerable upgrade.

I've looked through my mythology books and can't find anything suggesting black skin. For what that's worth.

Makes sense. If what I remembered were true, surely there would be painting of him in black with a white heel. :)
So, what would you guys do if some dude came at you with a belt that way?

No, the body heat would thaw my frozen heart.

You gotta admit though, this is obviously another case of contemporary identity politics being imposed on history/myth.

Since I haven't seen the show, I'm wondering how so.

Because that Achilles doesn't look remotely Greek, and the BBC has a track record of doing this sort of thing.

Almost like when they had Scarlett Johansson play an Asian character in Ghost in the Shell?

What a world. Hollywood prefers white people to be everything, and BBC's making a black Achilles.  :closed-eyes:

That isn't an answer with a fair level of evidence to convince someone.

I think examples of the BBC doing this thing before (ref. Margaret of Anjou and the Roman Britain cartoon) as well as several no-whites-need-apply job ads tells a fairly obvious story about internal policy.

So finally checked if Back was available on Amazon and as it was watched it. Liked it rather a lot and was happy to see it would get another series.

Merlin had black Guinevere. It was out of place there too.

Does Heimdal in Thor get a pass because they are technically aliens?

I remember the Internet exploding when heimdal was first shown so I wouldn't say it got a pass.

I never got the Roman Britain cartoon. A ton of historians came out if the wood work to verify there would have been black Romans at Hadrian wall. We're taking about an empire that had huge chunks of Africa under its domain for hundreds of years.

I think he gets a pass because he is Idris Elba. An accomplished actor.
I remember the internet exploding though. To be fair, he looks after the bifrost which is rainbow coloured, so he could be any coloured in theory?

Internet went off for the flame from Fantastic 4 too. I guess same as the Doctor being a woman?

That makes sense I guess. Legions would be from everywhere, however local populations would be easier to move. Where did that population go post empire?

Well from reading AskHistorians or SPQR for the most part, it seems that that population stayed. Plenty would have left as things decayed, but for the most part it seems they stated and eventually assimilated into later populations.

I know Mary Beard, who's one of the premier roman historians right now, wrote about the roman cartoon and showed the actual evidence for the 'man' in the cartoon. A roman officer from Africa who married a local and died during garrison duty. Seems like it was a pretty normal thing, but not exactly in huge number.

Surprisingly well done for a 16 year old in 1994 or whenever.

I tried watching The Orville. It was basically Star Trek with a bit more comedy. In other words, better than Star Trek.

Netflix - wreck of the unbelievable - doc about finding a sunken treasure of the coast of east Africa. It truly is unbelievable what they pull out of the waters and the historic pieces of art. Won’t tell you what it is because of the way it unfolds but definitely worth watching. Makes me want to head for Venice again.
