Is Empire a horde army?
« on: September 01, 2009, 05:47:53 PM »
Well the title says it all, is the Empire a horde army or what. I'd like to know because I wan't to do a fantasy horde style army. If Empire isn't a horde then what kind of army is it? Thanbks in advance

Empire is a "jack of all trades, master of none" army.  We get to be middling to low average in just about everything, (except war machines, where we're pretty good.) and depend on player skill, combined arms, and sheer poofy-sleeved bad-assery in order to carry the day.   :biggriin:

If you're looking for a horde army, you might be better off with an army like Skaven. However, the new Skaven book is on the horizon, so it would probably be worth waiting a few months.

Skaven can supply more troops for cheaper, thus making a better horde. As it stands (in the current book) they don't quite have the devastating artillery that the Empire do, nor some of the other options Empire has (fast cavalry, heavy knights) but they've got their own troops & tricks to help support the horde concept.

You can still run Empire as an infantry heavy army (with "combined arms" support). But that's a bit of an uphill battle. IMHO.

And as far as poofy sleeves and codpieces, I thought Empire was about the manly beards?

Today I played against an army of Dwarfs with about 90 models, the same model count as mine. So, my answer to the question would be "no". Empire is a flexible army with great diversity of units, but it doesn't win battles by itself.

@queek: "Poofy-sleeved bad-assery" - got to remember that! :biggriin:

@023 - you got the point. Manly beards are our army's trade, sleeves and codpieces are a supplement, but bad-assery should be a synonym to "Empire".  :closed-eyes:

The empire is "about" a combination of four things.

  • Manly Beards.
  • Manly Codpieces.
  • Manly Sleeves.
  • Manly Halberds.
I thought he should act responsibly and just kill himself.

The 3 things that make the Empire great are not Faith, Steel, and Gunpowder, but Gunpowder, Gunpowder, and more Gunpowder.  :-D

Reminds me of the time my unit of 6 handgunners fought off 5 chaos warriors, (they only killed one and I killed two but it was enought to make them flee)

ah blech forget it.

The strength of Empire is to be almost able to do what everyone else can do but not quite as well.

But we can almost always (if we have foreknowledge) counter whatever else the other guy can do.

Everybody else needs some kind of gimmick, we are just guys with pointy sticks and cannons.

Empire can be a horde, but it's not what they're best at.

You could take a horde of cavalry I suppose.

Empire can be anything you want it to be.

After starting it, I've mostly lost interest in my 7 other armies.

Does that answer your question ?

That is so true, Soth. Now, I am still interested in my Wood elves, and have some fleeting interest in my remaining high elves, and maybe Skaven will enter my life and for sure my Tomb king will one day become an army aswell.

But this is because Wood elves are doing something Empire really cannot do well, that is hit and run skirmishing guerilla warfare (And have stubborn core troops) and because Tomb kings are so very eqyptianesque.

I am thinking that an Empire army with good fire support, in the shape of my two cannons, the mortar and my helblaster, with probably a unit of pistoliers, should be able to horde pretty well with the right backup.

I played around with armybuilder and came up with a 110 model count dark elf army with four characters, a hydra and 2 bolt throwers....they have to be too cheap.

Um... my "standard" Skaven horde is usually just a shy of 300 figures at 2250.

When I ran an all gobbo horde in 6th ed. the numbers were similar.

I don't think you can really start talking "horde" until you hit the 250 model count.  :closed-eyes:
