Textured plasticard for bases?
« on: November 06, 2014, 01:06:20 PM »
Does anyone know where online I could get some textured plasticard for bases? Or anything similar that I could use as a stone, brick, gravel pavement basing?

Sometthing like this:

I purchased some from eBay - I believe Evergreen has a lot of stuff on there. There were many different selections. You could try browsing the evergreen or plastrut websites for what you want, and then searching by the product code number.

What you want - and trust me on this one - is "Wills York Stone Paving".

Google that you see if there is an online retailer in your country that sells it, or there is always ebay.

I used them for this unit:

Get a pack. Really. Or two!  :-D

Nice, but apparently they don't have irregular designs.

Yes, this is exactly what I need.   :eusa_clap:  I just need to find a reliable source for that. eBay seems a bit expensive. I need it for at least 40 bases.

Could you do what Bishmeister did and make some resin casts of bases? Or would that be even more expensive?

try going to a model railroad store, some times they have scrap boxes of stuff left over from store projects,  they save more bits than we do! if not they should have the stuff in stock or can order it.  steveb

They are quite cheap.

Each piece is about 13cm x 7.5cm, so that's 6 x 3 or 18 bases per piece, and a pack comes with 4 pieces!

If you glue the off cuts together, or have some bases which transition to earth, you can stretch a pack to use with 2 hordes!

What's more, you can cut them 4cm squares or 4cm x 6cm or larger, and glue the figures on them in a less regular fashion.

This is the cheapest I can find on ebay, and I think I bought from them the last time too:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wills-SSMP208-York-Stone-Paving-Sheets-New-00-Gauge-/400788295340?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d50d80eac

Good luck.

That is exactly what I used for making the masters for my Vampire Counts bases, too. And yes, do keep all the offcuts to use on your bases and other projects. If you keep your eyes peeled you will see lots of other Warhammer projects using it too.

The same manufacturer also make lots of other options, both more and less random than the York stone.

I often start off by looking for modelling materials here: http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/, as they carry a really wide range.

Ahh, 4 pieces, at first I didn't notice, now that's another story then.

Big thanx for your help, guys,    :::cheers:::  :::cheers:::

I discovered that wayland games holds also the Plastcraft sheets. Now I only need to calculate which one is a better bargain.

I have checked your store, Shade, but this:

European Zones 1  - £75.00p for orders up to 2kg
European Zones 2 - £75.00p for orders up to 2kg
European Zones 3 - £75.00p for orders up to 2kg
European Zones 4 - £75.00p for orders up to 2kg

...means it's of zero interest. They do have lots of usefull stuff though. Thanx anyway.

That's not their postal charge, I think that's the minimum spend to qualify for FREE postage!

To get a shipping estimate, put stuff in your shopping basket and then enter your location. It may still be expensive outside the UK, I wouldn't know of course!

Anyway, it's a good shop to find out what is out there even if you don't end up buying from them - though I can recommend them.

This company has it  all, not sure how they compare to other two options, regarding shipping and all.

Only they are a bit thin, only 0,5mm, too thin for our purpose I guess?

That is weird, I was thinking about this kind of thing and popped into my local train shop and nearly got this exact thing. I think you have convinced me to pop back in arjunistic. Looks great. They had a few other bits but this was definitely the most appropriate.

Thickness probably isn't a problem if you are going to glue it down to a base anyway. perhaps.

I have used the embossed thin plastic sheets too, but because they are flimiser, I use them for large surfaces like terrain pieces. Also, because they are embossed, the sides actually show a hollow under the flagstones - not a problem with terrain where you can hide the edges, but with individual bases that can mean a lot of work.

Could you take some resin and pour it on the back, smoothing it flat before it dried, and then use that?

Perhaps take a sheet of the textured card, pour the resin on, and then slap on a sheet of thicker smooth card to make the base?
