Finally got round to photographing my empire army and so thought I would share.
There are, as every, one or two bit still being added so it never really stops growing...unlike the space I have to store it...

Both regiments of halberds are Wargames Foundry

Handgunners in the front are GW plastics, in the back are Foundry

The knights on the right are bretonians in the colours of the Knights of the Southern Sword.

Militia from the local towns, a mix of adventurers, guards, young bravos and old soldiers.

More militia - this time mostly roadwardens

Warrior priests, of Myrmiddia and Sigmar respectivly
(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b306/Cod13/shwartzritter.jpg)
Roadwardens on the crest of a hill - these are Old Glory Schwartzritter and a bit too small really, they might be replaced by Warlord's plastic ECW...

More heavy pike

For some reason I really like the over all flavor of this army. :icon_cool: :icon_cool: :icon_cool:
The Bret knights don't look out of place, and my guess is this is because they have the same color scheme across the unit which makes them look more like Empire than Brets.
I like the defensive positions for the artillery. :icon_biggrin:
The crossbows with the orange and green look good, too. :eusa_clap:
The wardens on horseback, do you use these as Pistoliers :icon_question:
-
I'm sorry, but I don't like the idea for using many different bright colour schemes for your army. :-(
However, the individual units look fantastic! :eusa_clap:
-
GP, yeah the roadwardens are pistoleers
Redhammer - I also use it for WAB and suchlike so they are painted in a more historical style than for just WFB use which is why they are so gaudy and different.
-
I was going to say that they looked like what I'd expect a historical army might look like.
What weapons do the wardens on horse back have?
Also, I noticed the artillery piece that doesn't have the defenses, and was wonderign where this came from?
I really like the idea of having defenses for the artillery. I rarely ever find myself moving an artillery piece once it has been placed at the beginning of the game, so the idea of them having defenses seems super, and I like the ones you've given to these. Were the defenses for the GW great cannons scratch built or soemthign else?
One minor critique ... I'm thinking the barrels of the cannon might look better if the interior was darker or black.
-
:-o  :icon_eek: :-D
WOW that is impresive, I really like the gabions for the artilliary, I also like the represention of Solland's last knightly order.
:::cheers:::
-
That's a cool collection! Nice to see some Foundry models in the mix.
...I wasn't aware that many people still lived in Solland! :biggriin:
-
That's because Solland was once a province, although not during the current time frame of WFB. :icon_wink:
-

The figures have handguns/carbines

The model is I think from Grenadier many years ago, and is used as a DoW light gun

The guns are Wargames Foundry like their crew, and the gabions are bought off ebay, along with the fencing, I dont think i have ever moved a cannon once it was on the field lol
I am just in the process of putting them on finished bases, for some reason i never think of basing as part of the painting process, and I am trying to change that

yeah, you are quite right
-
That'll teach me for not visiting the Brush and Palette for ages.
Hello Uryens! Of course, I've seen most of these little fellers before (and had to fight them on several occasions) but I never knew there were so many. we've got to do a massive all day game some time so that you can field them all. Maybe a ridiculous Emp vs Emp game. It'd be 'smashing'.
Now, just got to read your Solland posts too. I really ought to learnt to be more observant.
Oh, and hello GamesPoet! (Just thought I'd mention the other one-time loyal Marienburger, in a spirit of continued brotherhood!)
-
continued brotherhood ?
That merchant council would have slit their mothers' throat for a bag of pennies....
Oh, and a real nice looking (and big) army, Uryens.
Damn you for showing some units that are on my "wanted" list, though.. At this rate, I'll never finish the 18th...
-
Hi Padre. :::cheers:::
The size of the "continued brotherhood" is larger then some might be aware. "United we stand, divided we fall", and in between, we debate. :icon_wink: :icon_lol:
When I get to England someday, I plan to be looking you guys up for a visit. Might even bring my army. :icon_biggrin:
-
They look a bit glossy, but that is a personal preference. Otherwise they are awesome, I love the way you mixed the different companies minis :-D
The banners are also very nice.
-
The really dont look that glossy IRL, I can only assume its an effect of the camera with the flash making them look like that.
-
I can back Uryens on that one - I've seen them IRL and I don't recall any glossiness. Cameras do do odd things.
(Ooh, I like that: "do do odd"!)
-
I can only put it down to the Watersnake effect.
-
Nice army!
I like the gun emplacements. Also, non-uniform Empire armies always look better.
-
I can only put it down to the Watersnake effect.
Dare I ask ... what is the "Watersnake effect"?
By the way, I was looking back through the pictures again, I like how you've put a banner with most of the units. Also, it was interesting to see that you used the knight horse heads with the feather across an entire unit, and this matches up neatly with the feathered helmets, too. There looks like there is another cannon crew behind those knights, but couldn't see the artillery piece in any of the pictures, but wondering what it is?

Have a look at Padre's Lizardman/Pigmy army thread for the "Watersnake effect" - and then use it as an excuse for everything...
As for the knights with feathers, I must confess I didnt build or paint them myself, they are a (very good) ebay purchase (£5 for 6 knights, bargain!) that are very well painted.
Yes there is another artillery team, a mortar to be precise, again from ebay, it is just sat on the floor at the moment, I have grand plans to build a firing pit for it, but have yet to start. When I do I will photoblog it perhaps. Depends how it works out lol
-
This thread is inspiring me to paint my artillery. I just have one great cannon, which I might make it convertible to a mortar, although I did just pick up a dwarf cannon when purchasing the 7th edition starter set.
I'm considering making some sort of a fortification for the artillery, although I was contemplating it being more like an earthworks with wooden spikes, to help against cavalry charges. :icon_lol: (Not that the GW rules allow for this. :icon_rolleyes: :icon_lol:)
-
heh
Its inspired me to finally start my mortar pit too :)
-
A mortar pit, sat on the fork of the River, north of Kell...

-
And the first of (hopefully) three "alternative" ogres to act as a mercenary unit...from somewhere in the southlands (I have finally sourced a second figure that fits in the southlands theme, just got to order it now...)
-
The mortar is awesome, if a little impractical-looking gamewise :icon_razz:
Where do you have that stylized bird icon on your banner from? I remember it from Medieval 2 TW, but I've wondered where it originally is from.
-
Its the Landwaster, a viking or saxon warflag (King Harald fought under the Landwaster at Hastings in 1066)
-
Ah, cool.
-
By 'eck, I like those figures. The Ogre's a great idea (what company makes that?) and the mortar pit is just smashing - it looks like a thing for WAR! The cut logs are a neat effect. (They're not real wood, I take it?)
I wonder where you got the mortar from? (hee hee hee)
-
The elephant is from dragonblood miniatures, who have some lovely single figures, I have found an ogre sized lioness thing with a massive axe to go with it, just need a 3rd thing now
The logs are indeed cut bits of hazel, gathered from the woodland near my house, I have a couple of little bundles waiting to be put to use now :)
-
You and Padre are killing me today with inspiration. First the introduction of his Ogre army on the Ex-Solland thread, and now the mortar pit here. :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
And I got a ton of things to do before I can do a thing with this hobby today. Including get off the computer. :icon_wink:
Like the idea of Southland themed Ogres, too. :::cheers:::
-
A Couple of newer bits

-
I like these muchly - though the dwarf will sure need his races' fabled strength to wield his fine piece!
Good figures too, especially the hunstman and his dogs. What make are they?
-
The humans are from warlord games, the one on the horse being Marcus Aurelius, unfortunatly he is far too tiny to use with GW since he looks like a hobbit on a pony :(
-
:icon_razz:

viking banner if I am not mistaken. steveb I missed the earlier post nswering this question, my favorite is the black raven on white field for the Vikings

Hope this shows, anyway, a knew GotE for my army, ever so slightly more enormous compared to his knights...
-
Woah he looks rather nails.
And those dogs are awesome, would be cool to see them running alongside the GoTE into battle!
-
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3608/3629780061_1cbdb3e12b.jpg?v=0)
There you go, along with his BSB for scale comparison!
-
Its the Landwaster, a viking or saxon warflag (King Harald fought under the Landwaster at Hastings in 1066)
Stamford Bridge Sept, 1066! And Harald Hardrada is King of Norway so its not Saxon. End of History rant. (Missed this post when browsing earlier...)
I do like your army, especially the pikes!
-
The Raven flag was used equally by Saxon armies as well as Viking armies, Godwinson fought under the Landwaster at Senlac Hill as well. (there was even a prophecy about it)
-
Hmmm. I thought Harold Godwinson fought under a dragon banner... Several Lords carried Raven banners at the battle of Hastings including Normans, but not all Raven banners are "The Landwaster" to my knowledge (limited though it may be). Was it captured at Stamford and taken to Hastings?
Prophecy? Cool. Where?
Too many Harolds (Harald) doing too many similar things in England in 1066. Harald killed by an arrow in the throat, Harold possibly killed by an arrow in a eye...
Cheers!
-
You are right, the Landwaster was specifically Hardrada's flag but Godwinson did fight under a raven at Senlac Hill (possibly as well as the Dragon)
The prohecy was that and English King fighting under the raven wouldnt lose, but I am struggling to find a link to that now and am beggining to doubt myself.
I will post a piccy of another newly painted figure tonight (a drummer in Solland colours) to bring this thread back on topic :)

That is pretty awesome. That would be Uryens von Kell then? With Uryens the Younger carrying his standard perhaps?
-
Uryens the Younger and Uryens von Kell are the same person ;)
He is the son of Uryens de Crux, Baron of Wusterberg :D
And no, I havent got a firm character for him yet, he might be the old baron on his warhorse, he might also get the job of the Grand Master of the Knights of the Southern Sword (The knightly order of Solland) But I am not sure yet :)
At some point I will have to post the list of "Dramatis Personae" of the Free Company that I have.
Thanks for the comments though, I am quite happy with how it turned out, simple but I quite like it, especially the horse
-
Aha my mistake, I thought von Kell was the father and de Crux the son.
-
An entirely justifiable bit of threadomancy I think with a camp for the up coming summer campaign...

A unit of Halberdiers from Solland, and the unit filler which is to represent the market cross type thing from the town centre. (english market towns have a pillar in the centre of the market to show its status as having a town charter)

A colour party.
-
Uryens already got another phot posted before the reply below.
So ... regarding the camp ...
Yes! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
I like the idea that the engineers are having a little gathering over there on the left, the cook is shaking his fist, while one guy has his palm raised trying to calm him down.
-
He is actually sticking two fingers up at him :icon_lol:
-
:icon_lol:
And I like how the Solland colors (as given by GW in the recent U&HotE book) came out on those new figures you've painted. Gives it an extra touch of class on the 5th/6th edition halberdeirs, too. :icon_cool:
The banners look great, but that photo of the column is hard to see. And it looks like there's someone else who picked up some of the new great sword figures. :icon_wink:
-
You talked about this stuff the other week - I gormlessly (spelling?) didn't realise you had these pics up.
They are Grrrr-eat!
(Sorry I turned into 'HM' there)

Though I'm flabbergasted to see Goldsword-parts in there. :icon_wink:
-
I bought them seperately, from a bits trader online :D
-
I love the colour party and cannot wait to see them in real life. I too have been busy. Will send a PM.

Quite a mix of characters there. :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool:
-
very nice,, from where are those girls
-
One is a GW Bretonian "maiden"
One is an Avatars of War vampire
the rest are all from Reaper Miniatures.
-
very nice....thanks a lot
-
If you wanted long haired girls, why not just use high elves :icon_lol:
-
I want them to be able to fight.
-
Excellent riposte, Uryens.
Made my morning!
-
Girl power! :::cheers:::........ ...nice choice of models and nicely painted, you could edit the pics thou, to get rid of the stong light contrasts.

-
Even though you're a dirty Sollander, I'm gonna have to keep on your good side with a behemoth of a cannon like that!
Some really nice stuff in here, good to see what those who live downriver look like.
-
I don't get it. I can see the crew ... let's count, 1,2,3,4, 5, yes 5 of them ... but where's the cannon? Is it one the end of one of the crew's pole? Or is the man on the left and front carrying it?
I know there's a cannon there somewhere, I just can't quite see it.
-
Its more of a flaconet than anything else Padre ;)
Inspired by a trip to Musee de l'armee in Paris and some of the artillery pieces I saw there, and also the medieval superguns like Faule Mett and the Dardanelles Gun
-
That cannons brilliant! How did you make it?
-
Its essentially a plastic cake pillar/stand - 5" grecian pillar with the top and bottom cut off and used to make the support frame that it sits on and fancy end cap is a wall plate from the Fortified Manor kit, as are the decorative fixtures on the gun mounting
-
Looking mighty fine !
-
Some more stuff, firstly the brilliant specials that GW made - I would love to see them do a whole range of these type of "fluff" figures.

And now some new bits for my Marienberg/ECW forces in prep for A5...

A small defensive line and suicide bombers, 17th Century Style...

-
Nice log-pile.
How big is that base on Mr. Bear? 40 by 40?
-
Ta, real twigs always look so much better imo...
And yeah, 40x40 so it will slot in as a nice unit filler if I want...
-
Like the idea of the free company, gives you a chance to just go nuts with ideas.
So how many points all up have you got?
-
About 5-6k
Without Steam Tank or Arch Lector on Altar to bump it up.
Basically, while I like uniformity in some armies, my Empire army I see being made up of all sorts of different units, raised from local towns & militias and paid for by the local lord who pays for his own colours in the uniforms.
-
Threadomancy time, with some more recent additions...
My army went to war recently in an actual tournment (and got spanked, stupid evil dice)
-
Those greatswords are all kinds of colors. :icon_biggrin:
-
Those greatswords are all kinds of colors. :icon_biggrin:
yes... they look great. As a sort of a warband, a nice concept
-
They are the personal bodyguard of the Baron of Wursterburg and as an elite regiment arent subject to the sumptuary laws of lesser soldiers...
Actually, there is a slight theme of Azure and Murray
-
Like it
-
What is their affiliation with the Knights of the Blazing Sun? (Banner)
Also, you might want to spent some time to update some of your bases so that the whole army has one standard look. That way it will look less messy with the abundance of colors on your minis.
Nice work though!! (where is the battle report? :closed-eyes: )
-
What is their affiliation with Solland? (Banner)
Fixed that for ya!
-
What is their affiliation with Knights of the Blazing Sun? (Banner)
Fixed that for ya!
Fixed it again ;)
There are yellow/golden suns on a black background!!
-
Uryens has Solland liveried troops (Halberdiers, yellow and white) and played a massive part of the 'Solland Effort' story-campaign a coupla years ago. I got used to suns on his banners being the Solland sun. So I am merely guessing with his Solland affiliatiosn that he might be counting the banner as Solland linked.
Mind you, he could just answer here himself!
-
The Sun in His Splendour is a common heraldic device, not restricted to just the KotBS (blazing squad knights lol). In fact the Sun in Splendour features on both Averland and Wissenland emblems representing the fact they stole bits of Solland - Solland itself noted as having the Sun featuring prominently on it's colours.
So, in short, it's the Battle Standard of Solland (or at least as I see it)
Sun in Splendour
Golden crowns
Knight slaying evil monster
Black field
Solland, not The blazing squad.
-
thanks for your detail description!!
I was not familiar with the solland heraldry but I am with the blazing squad ( :eusa_clap: )
Note to self: when creating my squad banner try to avoid likelyness with solland banner of uryens
-
I think there will always be a chance of similarity, given the main themes. But if you want my suggestion while Solland has suns and crowns, maybe KotBS would have suns and twin tailed comets/hammers/crosses?
Wouldn't they have a red field too? Or is that the Fiery Heart?
-
Well, the Free Company has finally invested in a War Altar/Carroccio, base needs finishing and there some minor details need finishing off too but its kinda ready to roll...

-
The overall sense of it seems imposing and grim, suitably so for WFB.
Is that suppose to be a block of marble on the back?
-
Never mind supposed to be...it actually is a block of marble...
-
Haha, neat, bet that's a heavy War Alter, although i think the poor four guys pulling it are going to struggle!
-
They are filled with the power of Sigmar, they can do anything...then die. But its ok, plenty more zealots where they came from.
-
The fact that you've made this using an actual block of marble makes this the best model ever made.
-
I love it. We have to have my carroccio go head to head with your war wagon, though a marble block gives yours an unfair advantage in a head on collision!
-

Nice ogres :eusa_clap: I've been trying to get that back right one for a while but just keep getting beaten on ebay.
Are you going to unit filler them ?
-
They're gorgeous. I fancy them.
So what? Does that make me a bad person?
-
No it doesn't but I'd be upset if I was your Mrs...
-
Like those models! Love how the front middle one has the colors of Solland. Well done! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
Back in the early 80's I picked me up the one on the front left, along with one I don't see in the mix there. Didn't paint them then, got them base coated now, but still deciding how I want to paint them.
-
GP.
Its because he started off life as a unit filler for my halberdiers, but then I realised I could do something else for them and had 3 other Ogres so got 2 more to make a DoW/EotW unit of ogres.
-
An old unit now given a command unit...full of beer, armed to the teeth and looking for a fight...its the Boys from the Woolpack

Free Company!
Who's the guy on the end that seems not to be holding a weapon?
-
He has a sword at his belt, but he is a Ranter, from Warlords ECW range...I imagine him as a bar room lawyer, or a WFRP demagogue firing up the "lads" from the bar.
-
So a while ago I started putting together some musicians and standard bearers for no real reason, but here are the current crop, I am sure there will be more

Threadomancy!
Done any more Uryens? I'm looking forward to seeing something new and shiny :)
-
Yes, actually...
Got some nice old Marauder Ogres and also the Forgeworld Marienberg swordsmen and Ironsides handgunners.
-
Ooh, now that I didn't know. So ... are they painted yet?
What about now?
Now?
Aww, c'mon, how long are ya gonna make us wait?
I'm not going to take my eyes off this screen until they appear before me.
-
Yes, they are painted.
-
Do I really need to type that I am still watching the screen? You know what I am like. If I hadn't had some wine already I'd drive over with my camera right now.
Oh, and btw Uryens, the bat rep for the reenactment game is begun.
-
I'll photo them tomorrow, just for you Padre
And i've read the battle rep, its as brilliant as it was playing it :)
-
First up, the Ironsides.
Inspired by the Black Bands of Giovani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Bands)

Two most excellent companies there, oh yeah! I take it, then, you've been painting as a relaxing break between the exam preparation and such and what not? Excellent way to have a break and get something important done at the same time. And yes, I mean important.
-
Looking good! I really like the marines. Will they have a naval cannon to go with them? That would be a fun thing to have.
-
Both very great looking units there Uryens... Every time I see either your or Padre's painted units I get inspiration to paint my models :) keep it up and I will post pictures of my painted stuff :)
-
I like the addition of the ogre in mannan's blades, very nautical.
-
It's been around 2 and a half years since I last viewed this army.
Are there new additions to it? Has it seen or will it see any play at some point?
