Title: My Painting Blog... Ostermark-ish! (BSB on demigryph WIP, Feb 29, 2024)
Post by: anvalous on April 29, 2010, 04:30:01 PM
This is more of a place holder for me.  I've got 10 swordsmen sitting on my desk and a relatively open weekend.  I also have that empire general to paint.

Scheme is going to be red and white dominant with green accent.  Definitely a woodsy feel.  Imagine a fortified logging camp at the edge of the wilderness and a similarly fortified manor of a little-known baron.

Pics coming soon, I promise!

Figured I should post something so you could get a feel for my 'style'.  Here's some stuff from my lion/Narnia Beastmen army which is also in progress, though somewhat stalled due to a lack of motivation caused by a hard-to-like army list...

Also, I guess, my first real attempt at NMM, though I certainly don't intend to paint my Empire in this fashion - too time consuming!

Lion guy riding a dragon... yeah... Why not?

You know, its the kind of dragon that likes bounding through tall grass and leaping from rocky crag to rocky crag...

Thanks for the comments, guys!  It is a fun army to work on.  I have 3 lion-o-taurs with 2 hand weapons, 3 with great weapons, 3 razorgors, 2 of the big dragon riders, the doom-lion, 1 WIP razorgor chariot and 1 WIP ghorgon.  It is the core units which will kill me... I am sculpting all of the gors to be satyrs.  Means torso swaps and a lot of green stuff and filing down anything chaos-y...

I hope to be able add something Empire this weekend/early next week!

Great technical skill and awesome points.

How many lion chariot box sets have you bought ?
Title: Re: My Painting Blog... Hochland-ish
Post by: anvalous on April 29, 2010, 09:34:24 PM
Thanks.  I have purchased 4 HE chariots (all the chariot parts will eventually morph into Tuskgor/razogor equivalents) and 6 white lions in bitz form from Battlewagon Bitz.

The local Hobbytown owner thought I was crazy...  "Why all the chariots?  It is all you buy..."

Turns out I had the old metal minotaurs to hack apart for the bodies...

Outstanding concept and very well painted! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

I noticed the dragon being wingless, but it looks good that way, and I'd call him a drake.

So is this army going to be run as Beasts of Chaos?

Looking forward to seeing the swordsmen.

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys!  I appreciate it!

A bit of a status update:

My wife and I are now proud owners of a new puppy.  Good little dog, actually, but not quite trustworthy enough to allow him to romp while I paint.  That said, I've made some decent progress on the swordsmen.  I have a final highlight, or two, on some green ribbons, a top highlight on the skin once I figure out the tint it needs from the completed model, and my brown series applied (to boots, belts, etc.).  All in all, I'm guessing about 3 hours of desk time remain.

Then it is on to get my greatswords on magnetized bases and ready for work...  Exciting, isn't it?

I love this hobby....

Great work with the lions!
The black basecoat kinda gives the swordmen a dark look, have you considered using white primer? I'm more into brightly colored Empire armies, as they look more glorious. Darker colors fit the theme you described in the starting post though.

Thanks much!  The general is indeed an Archaon conversion.  I've had a LOT of practice turning wholesome things towards chaos (my ultimate achievement being a Valten conversion to a Chaos Lord), but this is one of my first 'de-chaos-ifying' activities.  Gets tiresome filing down all of those spikes...

I'm going to try and finish painting him in about two weeks.  Gotta love traveling for business... keeps me away from wife, home, and hobby... ugh.

This is my lumber-jack steam tank.  Every Hochlander needs one...  how else would we clear space for the marvels of agriculture?

I think the concept is really cool, and surprisingly it even kinda fits the Warhammer atmosphere.

The only think that bothers me though are the arms, they are a bit too techy for Fantasy, but I'm sure they could be made to look more steam powered some way...

Also, I think the crewman/engineer needs a head that says more 'mad professor', as someone like that would be the only person to road test this bad ass Mother Hubbard.

Post by: anvalous on July 29, 2010, 11:47:33 AM
Great feedback.  I've been wondering about the arms myself.  Trying to figure out if some more archaic piping/gears would work better - and to cut out some of the existing cabling.  We'll see.

As for the engineer, I have one of the old metal ones hanging around that looks all good and crazy.  Only problem is that he's missing his arms (can't find 'em) and his right shoulder is positioned in an awkward way.  I might try to green stuff it towards normal.  Important point is that the engineer is not connected at the moment, so a swap would be easy.

I've also heard that it is still too orcish.  We'll see what I can do about that in the future.  For now, though, I might set him aside until I get a few parts in.

Just painting some of the rods on the arms as wood would make it look less techy. also, cogs are a great way of making something look more like it's designed by empire engineers.

Excellent work!  :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

The general is a good conversion, and it does not reminds caos, so good work. I see it more like a grandmaster than a general, due to the armour type...

And the steam tank is excellent and diferent. I dont know about the sew on one hand, too futuristic maybe...but the rest I think it can work as a steam powerred thing...And the problem with the 2º driver, that indeed feel more like a mad engenieer, is that is too up in the hole. It should get the edge on his chest or so, like the first one, not at his knees. It seems like falling down...

But it is really awesome, I wainting to see it painted...

Glad you like it!  Thanks for the comments - the feedback is quite encouraging, especially since I have 31 half-built halbediers on my desk which are next...

I paint with Vallejo Game Colors, but I'll try to include GW equivalents...  The stone is all dry-brushed, by the way.

1. Shadow Grey - think this is Space Wolves Grey
2.  Stonewall Grey - think this is fortress grey
3.  Ghost Grey - not sure on this one
4.  Desert Yellow - again, not sure, but this is the key for me.  Really makes the stone look like it is lit by the sun.

Hope that helps!

Question!!!!

So I have 31 Halberdiers almost completely assembled and they are in need of some serious unit-filler because unit fillers are a good excuse to be a little crazy.  This unit is a true hodgepodge with ~10 Bretonnian Man-at-Arms converted with Empire heads and halberds, ~10 Free company with FC halberds, ~5 FC with greatswords, and 6 FC/Marauders with an assortment of killing implements and big muscles.  The lack of uniformity is intentional to add some real interest to the unit and to make the painting a bit more fun for me.  With that in mind, and the diversity of these Hochland halberd-wielding (or equivalent) militia, what would be a good unit filler?

A giant beast?  The ever-popular ogre?  A tree?  A lumber sledge?  A dude posed prominently on a rocky bit?  I'm looking for some inspiration...

What would you like to see me take a crack at?

Thanks, in advance, for the feedback!

I will give it the first shot then   If it was me I would do a horse mounted dude to stand in for my unit banner bearer, mounted on an ogre base.  I would pose him in the traditional glorious pose of waving his banner & inciting the troops forward.  Feel free to ditch or take up this idea as you like though   As a side note, I really like the armour & sword on your high elf dragon rider & even though I would like to steal it for a lord of mine; I fear it is too difficult a technique for me to pull out properly  :|

Maybe the beast idea, but with a bear with a chain pulled by a halberd...a "war bear", maybe with a small piece of armor...

Quick update for me - I decided, at the suggestion of a good buddy, to keep the unit more homogenous, so they all have empire halberds.  Further, I didn't get as much painting done this weekend as I would have liked, but I did manage the following:

25 halberds basecoated, with bases and metallics painted (helms and halbs, mostly)
25 greatswords basecoated, with bases painted and metallics started (first drybrush of gunmetal and one coat of baddab black ink).

Hope I can get some more work on 'em this week!

Getting close to finishing my 25 halberds... hair, I think, is all that remains.

As an aside, this month will include something a bit different.  My old gaming club has a monthly painting contest as a friendly challenge to keep brushes active.  It has been an absolute blast.  This is the final month of this 12-cycle 'round'.  The winner of each cycle picks the next challenge - "Paint infantry."  "Has to have a big weapon."  "Must use the color yellow."  etc.  They are intentionally broad to make sure that all of our gamers, regardless of system, can participate with something fun.

Anyhow, this month requires that we paint something with the color pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.  I'm opting to paint a model from a rockstar company called Sodapop Miniatures (they've been to GenCon, PAX, and something else this year - they also happen to be my buddies).  I'm not going to go as crazy as their paint job, but here's what I'm working with:

http://web.sodapopminiatures.com/selectcharacter/Princess%20Malya

The model was a bit of a pain to put together, but is truly gorgeous.  Sodapop doesn't mess around.  Detail is great and the opportunity to go through the roof on this one has me salivating.  I'm leaning towards a blue robot and pulling the required pink in for Malya's hair and, possibly, her bodysuit.  We'll see.

The coolest part of the whole thing is that Sodapop has graciously offered the winner of this challenge one of the models in their range as a prize.  I encourage you all to look through their stuff.  It is pretty fantastic - not to mention that they're pulling together a few games to go with the models and a board game called Super Dungeon Explore which rocks face.  Their home page link is here:

http://web.sodapopminiatures.com/home

Great stuff.  Thanks for reading and, hopefully, I'll be posting pics of halberds tonight!  Woot!

Cursed luck!

Imagine this - here you are sifting through ebay for some happen-stance bitz acquisition when you spy something unexpected - 6 metal minotaurs - for relatively little cash.  You're click-happy, and, even though you're focused on your Empire army and have a stack of HE next to you, you buy them.  You look at your array of painted models and you see your half-finished Beastmen army... your beloved lion men...

What do you do?

You let the creativity carry you to the stars and beyond!  :::cheers::: This is great work, and I for one would not see it hemmed by rules, goals or personal agendas! Unless you have a definite date for your Imperials, I'd say do as you feel. Sure, some projects might get the shelf for a while, but if you don't feel the creative passion burn while holding it, you might just let it sit for a while. It's always great to have something you can just do exactly what you want with. And given time, work will be done and results produced. It doesn't matter if you never find a use for them or the beastmen are phased out within a few months of the army's completion. Creativity and inspiration should not be held back!  :smile2: I say go for it!

Greatswords 21 with full command - 240 pts

A labor of love. Great models.  Even so, I'd love some CC on 'em.  I tried something a little different for the armor - boltgun drybrush base -> black ink ->1:1 white and mithril drybrush -> sepia ink -> mithril silver highlight.  I wanted them to look bright, but a little dingy.  I think it worked, but not totally sure.  Also wondering what the general thoughts are on the white - is it bright enough?

Thanks, everyone!

Superb Greatswords! I think your armour turned out really well, and I love how you mixed 6th and 7th ed. models. I do think that the banner did not turn out that well, I like the symbol, but I think the white needs a bit less brown, maybe the shade is too dark? Just my opinion though! On smaller surfaces the white looks great.

Keep this up!

Thanks for the comments and CC!

@Stareso - you may be right.  It is a challenge to balance the contrast on a model, especially when we look at a relatively flat banner.  I tried to exaggerate the folds with some more intense shading to add some depth.  Even so, I really appreciate your comments and have thought about whether or not I want to do a light glaze with, say, a bleached bone color to soften the brown.

10 handgunners are on the desk in the hotel room this week.  I'll try to get them done over the next two weeks!

If it was me, I would leave the flag alone, you did well on the cloth. What I would do is paint the spiky hair on the pig black with some dk gray highlighting. I would use bone on the parchment in the upper right corner with some very fine text/print lines and maybe a colored cartouche in the corner or at the bottom of parchment like it was a seal. And on the bottom edge where the parchemnet touches the flag I would do an extreme scorched brown underline to make the parchment pop out. I would also paint the skull with bone and shade with a watered down medium brown, leaving the teeth white with maybe some lines in black or scorched brown to define the individual teeth. This is what I think would balance out the colors and give you more bang for your buck.  Also good job on the unit as a whole. thanks for sharing.  steveb

one other thing I just remembered, you can make little balls of green stuff and put in the eye sockets of the skull and then paint them like eyes, or leave white, or paint red (I vote for red) and the laurels on the cross bar are good in gold, but you might try adark green like skarloc and highlight with scorpion and the do the ribbon that ties the two in dk red highlighted with blood red. the green will make the red boars head come alive. (red and green pump each other up)  can't wait to see what you do, PM me when you post finished so that I can remember to check it out.  steveb

Hoping to get back to the GS banner this evening.  When I get a chance, probably this week, I'll take some pictures of stuff.  10 handgunners are done and I've got a life wizard that's IP.  Blue-green out-cloak, pale yellow robe... good times.  I felt free to give license to wizards to deviate from an army's color scheme...

I've got to admit, I had reservations about it pre-paintjob, even with the work to make it more fantasy than sci-fi. With a lick of paint on it, it's lost much of that sci-fi look and now has that fantasy/steam punk look too it. Very nice work.

The oaken desk tore, end-over-end across the study, bouncing and cracking along its path.  Captain Hathas Strehlau dodged to the left, avoiding the heavy furniture and caught the briefest glimpse of the thief as he disappeared through the open window.  The air stank of dark magic.

Shaking his head, the young officer put down his head and ran through the winding halls towards the courtyard.  That wizard had mentioned the cult, even named some of its leaders, but even he hadn’t expected such a strike.  Very few knew that the count had been coordinating military commands through this post.  Clearly, this cult had spies reaching insidiously through the Empire.

Hathas’ controlled breathing paced his thoughts as well as his legs as he emerged into the open air.  His knights were mounting and his footmen were scanning the walls.  A shout erupted from the east gate and the race was on to catch a fleeing thief...

Watching from the edge of the wood, Grey Raven set his keen eyes for movement.  He’d told that captain to be on his guard, but even the mighty shadow wizard hadn’t expected this aggressive an act.  Still, not knowing was different from not reacting.  His men, obscured in their shifting grey cloaks, waited in the trees, cutting off escape.

The horns from the keep were the first sign of the attack and were blaring again as troops were inevitably marshalling in pursuit.  At that moment, the seer caught a glimpse through his mage-sight of a fiery brand leaping unhumanly from the eastern wall.  Gathering the winds about him, he summoned a mystifying shroud over the wood.

There would be no mistakes tonight.  Not only would the Empire soon be back in possession of their stolen intelligence, but Grey Raven had ways of making this chaos-tainted fiend talk.  The whole network would know of this threat and their backers by morning...

Nice work on the BSB conversion.

The thief filler is nice as well. You just need to do a little work on the scroll. Right now it looks like he's holding a dumbell and not a scroll. At least I assume it is supposed to be a scroll.

Oh yeah.  There is quite a bit of greenstuff work yet to do with the filler, just needed to get it roughed in to show my partner for the team tourney at Adepticon to make sure it works for our theme before going crazy.

I'm really excited to paint that BSB, though I've told myself I have to paint the halbediers first... my second batch is built and preparing for line painting is a chore.  Once I start, I'm good, but I have these characters, and those knights, that keep pulling me away from RnF.

Your lion conversions and ability to paint muscles on large creatures is second to none. Amazing work!

But I have to say, an I'm probably going to be bashed mercilessly for this, compared to the good stuff your ability to paint empire figures is not as good. I don't know if it's because of a poor selection of colours (I'm talking mostly of the browns), or if you're perhaps using the wrong washes. I've noticed the whites and skin colours look quite dirty on your figs. In addition, the way the eyes are painted on the empire soldiers make them look terrified. This is because more of the white than the black is visible on the eyes. Adding more black and making the eyes smaller would do the trick.

The steam powered walker is an awesome conversion and I love the concept but when you painted him it looked quite bland. Perhaps you're not finished with it but I would wash the metal colours and then highlight it more thoroughly. Then perhaps add some rust and soot with pigment powders or washes.

All in all, I'm only saying this because of the huge contrast between the empire figs and the larger scale creatures you've painted. You clearly have a great talent but perhaps you're using the wrong techniques on the smaller models?

Thank you very much for the feedback!  I do appreciate the compliments and the constructive words as well!

I've always been a fan of monsters.  Really big, scary stuff just makes me happy.  That high elf dragon was a thrill.  My lion-o-taurs are part of a bigger plan nd I felt inspired when I was working on them.  The same can be said of some of the Empire pieces, too.  The Archaon/General conversion is one that I'm really proud of.  Same with that life wizard.  The RnF troops are hard to get excited about.  I paint them to fill out an army and want them to be good, but I don't pay as much attention to blending when line painting.  I think the worst example of this is that first batch of swordsmen.  They need work.

All in all, I love this hobby and the big beasties.  The 'artsy' army that is on the horizon is my High Elves.  They're going to get some serious attention.  In the mean time, my focus is to clean up those swordsmen, put excellent paint on those knights, and spend some extra time on a few to-come war machines to assemble a solid 1k force for a team tourney in April.  Then I can relax back into painting stuff for the sake of painting stuff.

As for the steam tank, I want to keep it a little crispser and avoid a rust-bucket feel.  I might heed your advice on the washes, though.  Maybe even try to make it sooty in spots.

Thanks, again, for the CC.  Healthy challenging makes me happy!

I wouldn't worry about the Rank and File not being up to the same standard as all the other cool and interesting parts of the army. Nobody is going to notice the RnF guys lower standard paintjobs anyway. When the full spectacle of the army is on the table the look of it as a whole is what will be noticed. People will be drawn to the cool stuff and with the Empire, there is a good chance those RnF troops won't be on the table long anyway!

Very impressive, I don't think I have allready seen a knight-unit with greatswords.  I'm still not convinced to make one by myself. ....Good job, thou.

Sweet models! The pistolier body and greatsword heads work well on the knights. Furs are a nice touch.

What is the baton the guy in the middle is holding? Does it count as a standard or is it still WIP? Which kit is it from?

Yeah... the baton guy is still my WIP standard bearer.  That's a pole from the artillery cannon crew.  A tamper of some sorts, I'd suspect.  My 'plan' is to construct a stuffed boar's head to mount on it with some fancy ribbons and such.  A standard of a victorious hunt.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Super fun to paint.  This is the Paladin for the upcoming game, Super Dungeon Explore from Sodapop Miniatures.  Learned a few things about surface preparation (hindsight, unfortunately, and I'm beating myself up over it....), but a great model all the same and I'm quite happy with the paint.

All right.  I'm a terrible picture taker (as in I don't do it often enough), but you'll have an update this week - likely on Sunday.

Finished those knights this weekend... and an engineer... and a unit filler... and my movement trays...

Zooming to the end of the month and Adepticon!

This is a 95% complete unit filler for my swordsmen.  I'm teaming at Adepticon with an incredible Warriors of Chaos army in which everything is converted a whole lot and the marauders are based on the gor models.  Thus the tie in... C&C is much appreciated!

I'm incredibly impressed with your conversions, your skill with green-stuff is beyond belief! The logger is particularly well executed, are you going to use it as a straight stand-in for a stank? Or have you made up a rule-set for it? If so i'd love to see!

Edit: The use of a bendy straw is awesome for the smokestack. Totally didn't notice that before.

Here he is!  The Ghorgo-sphinx!  Well, an in process one (still needs some polishing on the GS work).  He's destined to be a ghorgon, and, as befits his bully-nature, completely swept aside the 5 test gors that are 70% done.  So it goes...  thoughts and feedback are requested!  Also, I've decided he'll have one of the giant necrosphinx blades.  What should his other weapon be?  The other blade?  Short spear?  Falchion?  Axe?  Nothing?  Other?

Thanks, guys!  I've got to say that working on a model this large lets one be a little more aggressive with the sculpting - more area to work with.  I'm going to try a milliput wash to help smooth some of the gaps and transitions, then we should be ready to rock.

Popular vote is actually 'Other' for the second hand and is leaning towards a large, round shield.  I think it could work well, assuming I can find the right pieces in my bits box.

Torso is in process as of last night.  Lots of TK engravings to fill and armor transitions to smooth.  I'm going to try and get the torso done tonight so it can cure for some cleanup tomorrow.  I hope to have an assembled 'complete' model by Saturday...

Hooray for motivation and enthusiasm!

Also, some chap on Warseer may have made my day by suggesting Dark Eldar razorwings to use as my harpies...  Woot.

More WIP shots.  Not as rough as it looks - just sanded and gave him the milliput washin' love!

Arms are also done, though the shield has not been started, really.  I've had in-laws come through as wellas house-guests for the better part of two weeks.  I hope to model some this weekend.  Maybe even paint....

That's really nice, but you've done so much green stuff work on it, I don't know why you even bothered using the Sphinx model. You've obviously got the talent needed to sculpt your own. Why not just sculpt your own from scratch? So little of the original model is left, it seems an expensive model to just cover over it with all the greens stuff.

Thanks, Delthos.  I appreciate your kind words!

The sphinx model was used for 2 reasons:
1.  I got it for $10 of my money after placing 2nd in the local 'ard Boyz tourney.
2.  It provided an excellent framework to go with.  Structurally, it helped to make sure proportions were consistent (aside from the tail, which I cut back and tried to keep from getting too bulky), and it provided that cat skull.  That thing was invaluable.  I essentially just had to think about the muscular anatomy of the lion's head and build up in layers.  Made my biology background giggle with glee.  Finally, the thing is huge.  I wasn't sure what I could use to bulk up the model in such a way that I wouldn't have to spend a ton of money on sculpting materials.

All of that said, I'm debating whether I can dive into an attempt to sculpt a human-sized model.  Practice, practice, practice, right?

Hey anvalous, I've got a few questions about modeling since I am heavily green stuffing my sphinx as well. What is miliput? I noticed you mentioned it. Also, I am afraid that my green stuff will look rough after I undercoat and paint it. My fear came from the fact that after I sanded (or filed) the green stuff it looks scratched up and whitish, just like in your pictures. Does that come out looking smooth or should i sand/ file more? Also I am using the GW model files, any suggestions on what to file with other than that?

All together your ghorosphinx looks awesome
Title: Re: My Painting Blog... Hochland-ish (Ghorgosphinx WIP - May 19)
Post by: Delthos on May 21, 2011, 04:48:57 AM
Miliput is another two part putty. It behaves more like clay does than green stuff. It can also be smoothed and even thinned with water before it cures. Once cured it is very hard and brittle. There are five different types of miliput, rated on how smooth it is, or how small the grains are that it is made from. I like using it for terrain more than miniatures. I also use it to make things like weapons due to it's very hard properties once cured and it's abilithy to hold a sharp edge. It can also be sanded or filed very easily once cured.

Thanks for the assist, Delthos!

@ Arselus - I, too, have a horrible time getting my greenstuff perfectly smooth. I've been waiting for CMON to get their rubber-tipped scultping tools back in stock as I believe they'll help.  ALmost all of my sculpting is done with my exacto, toothpicks, and a saliva-covered finger.  The sanding has been a newer option due to my recent dremel acquisition, but it seems to be doing its job.  The result can be a bit scratchy and the surface break makes the stuff look more opaque, but it still paints well.  For large surfaces, I find the easiest way to smooth things is to lick my finger and move it very quickly over the surface of the GS.  Helps smooth any irregularities/finger prints.

Paint also helps hide some of those surface flaws ;-)

Hope that helps?

great work! you're truly talented!

only little piece of criticismen: I think it would look more realistic if the lion bit on the shield was tilted sideways because now the shield arm is at ease next to his body, If the shield was help up in defensive position it would stand up right then. Just try to image the movement of the shield arm. It's only a minor point, just something I noticed

@ SKS - this guy is huge.  He is bigger than the HE dragon...  Here's a specific pic for scale from a guy on Ulthuan:  http://www.ulthuan.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31665  Model itself is one of the best I've worked with, though the rider that came with it was more 32mm scale and not in the GW style...

@ Commander - This is the CoolMiniOrNot Great Eagle

@ Gamespoet - The gold was done with a starting base of scorched brown/scar red at a 1:1 with the slow addition of yellow and eventually white.  I tried to work fast enough to get some decent wet blending and met with some success.  Does that help a bit?

On the prince on eagle....well incredibly well painted especially the eagle but I don´t like people standing on their mounts surfing into battle just holding on a rein with one hand.....what will he do when he tries to use that bow. Saddle mounted buckled in would look better.

Thanks, Fandir.  Though it is hard to see, there is a unit filler white lion in the back of the unit.  I might use one of my others (they double as razorgors) which is a bit higher.

As for the HE prince...

Thanks for the compliment!  The modeling is tough to pull together, though, as the wings on that eagle make riders tough.  Would have been easier than the CMON owl model (which I did manage, albeit after much frustration), but the surfer look just came together.  Ideal - not quite.  Despite the pose, I am still very happy with how he turned out.

Didn't you know that all elves are ninjas?

Hi All,

My ogres have started (I got the itch... who didn't?), albeit slowly.  I won't be moving fast on these, but I wanted to put them somewhere.  First off, my tyrant - The Duke:

  Very nice overall!  Were you planning on "dirtying" up the sword at all?  Not rust, as it would weaken the blade, (silly GW fiction) but, perhaps a splatter of blood just to "break up" the metal a bit?

The trousers look great btw.

Auberon - you are a genius!  I've been thinking long and hard about how to break up that silver.  Woot woot!  A bit of blood might just be the ticket :-D

Thanks, all.  I think this army will be really fun - I started a bit of fluff in the Imperial  Office.

That is the first of three pages of "Basti" - some kind of cat-people. I don't know if you had seen these or not; they may work well in your lion-army.

I found this cat-Elvis ("The King of Memphis") particularly fine; https://www.crocodilegames.com/store/itemDetail.cfm?prodID=144&catID=21

DK - thanks for the info!  I have a buddy who's using Crocodile games minis and they're pretty cool, so I've looked through their line.  I admit to being a little frightened by that cat-Elvis.  Sometimes people just go one step too far, don't you think?

As for the army, Star Wars: The Old Republic has slowed me down significantly, but I have my centilions built and sculpted.  They're down to needing some cleaning and hands.  Hopefully I'll have the bits I need by early next week.  I'll keep ya'll updated!

I think a cat-Elvis with a cat-girl backing dancer with only two breasts is either going far too far or not nearly far enough.

Well, you'll see some results in this post.  I went with dark gray mane/tail to represent the fact that Ghorros is supposed to be older.  As for the tail length, I left it a bit long to help balance the front-loaded centaur feel.  Thanks for the comments, though, always appreciate them!

I've gotten Ghorros internet worthy.  A bit more blending/glazing on the NMM, I think, but he's looking the way he'll look.  Let me know what you think and if you see any spots I might want to attack some more!

Hi all... I know it has been a long time since I posted but I have a question for you...

I'm working on my 'Bret-Ogia' army for a local escalation tourney and wrapping up my lion beastmen for Adepticon.  Would you like me to post some pictures here of more recent progress or leave off until I start crackin' on some Empire stuff again?

I've been leaving this particular blog alone as I try to actually focus, but am happy to share if you'd like to see 'em!

As an aside, I've been trying to pick up Confrontation Cadwallon Militia and Crossbowmen of the Militia to make a few very unique units for my Hochland army.  So...

1)  If you have some of these models you'd be willing to part with, shoot me a PM

and

2)  Hooray for painting super cool models!

Yeah, a double post, but one completely separate from my lions :-)

New empire stuff...

I'm going to be painting the griffon and the demigryphs.  I'd like some input on colors!

Griffon:
A: Brown feathers, touched with red, and a tawny hind-quarter
B: Red feathers, touched with orange, and a leopard hind quarter
C: Dark green feathers, touched with emerald tones, and a panther hind quarter (i.e. blue-black)
D: Something entirely different!  If you go with this option, let me know what you'd suggest!

I'll likely use a similar coloration for the demigryph-to-captasus conversion I'm planning.  Maybe even keep the palette all the way through my demigryphs... what do you think?

Finally, I think I will build a spearmen regiment.  I'm depating whether or not to use Greatsword bodies (I know it'll be pricey, but they'll look rad) or something else.  Any thoughts or suggestions here would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks, folks!

Thanks for the props on the Lion army!  I am really, really happy with how it turned out!  :-)

For my griffon, I think I'm going to go with a dark brown base on the feathers and work up through red to a fiery orange in a few extreme points.  There will be some black banding on the flight feathers to break it up and add some interest.

The hind quarters have been a challenge for me.  With the sheer amount of whitish hide I've painted (my entire lion army...) I want to go with something very different.  With such a vibrant plummage and a bright rider (my empire characters have blue-washed white lacquered plate), I think I'm going to go with a panther back portion.  It'll be extremely dark blue/purple with black leopard spotting for interest and a slightly grey-er underbelly.

I believe I can balance the two dramatic color choices well, though it will definitely be a unique griffon.  We'll see if I can pull it off ;-)

Edit:  I now have an assembled griffon of pure joy.  He is a beautiful model.  Painting won't happen for a little while, yet, but he will be EPIC!  WEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Double post - sorry.  But only sort of.  Here is the next evolution of my empire list with the new models and a more monstrous theme.  I'm giddy.  Hard to capture here, but this list is really getting me fired up...

2200pts:
General of the Empire on an Imperial Griffon with Bloodroar equiped Full Plate, Charmed Shield, White Cloak, Lance, and the Crown of Command- 396

Captain, BSB, AoMI, Greatsword - 141
Warrior Priest, HA, Enchanted Shield, Relic Sword, Ironcurse Icon - 87
Captain, Pegasus with Swift as the Wind, Dragon Helm, Full Plate, Shield, Lance, Opal Amulet - 155
Battle Wizard of Beasts, lvl 2, dispel scroll, warhorse, Dragonbane Gem - 142

Halberds x45, FC - 300
Detachment A: 7 swordsmen - 49
Detachment B: 7 swordsmen - 49
Knights x6, mus, std, Greatweapons - 152

Cannon - 120
Cannon - 120
Demigryph Knights x3, mus - 184
Demigryph Knights x3, mus - 184

Helblaster - 120

That means that I need to paint:
Griffon - JOY OF JOYS!!!
Captasus (maybe on a winged demigryph OR the IOB Griffon as it is a little baby griffon...)
Mounted Beast Wizard - using the amber wizard from the griffon kit because he's awesome x50
WP on foot - I'm actually thinking of using the new witchhunter model with a few conversions, but we'll see - if I did this, do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
2 units of Demigryph Knights
Helblaster

Triple Post!!!  Aaaarrrggghhhh, it burns!!!!

Our LGS is hosting a ridiculous tournament (which I don't know if it'll actually happen as planned) in October.  $50 entry fee (for a small community of WFB players... silly) with a $500 cash prize.  There are really only ~3 players who are contenders for this thing and I'm in that camp.  I pretty much have to bring my Empire army and need to modify it a bit to get up to 2500 points.  As fluffy and fun as the list in my previous post is, I don't think it is something I want to use when cash is on the line...  So:

General - Armor of SIlvered Steel, Fencer's Blades, Potion of Strength
Archmage of Light/Life (not sure yet) - lvl 4, dispel scroll

BSB - AoMI, Greatweapon
Warrior Priest - HA, S, Relic Blade, Ironcurse Icon

Halberds x44, FC + 2 detachments of 6 swordsmen
Knights x10, Mus, Std, greatweapons

Greatswords x40, FC, Standard of Discipline + 1 detachment of 6 swordsmen
Demigryphs x4, mus
Cannon

Helblaster
Stank

I'd love to fit in another cannon, but I had to choose between that and the stank... Any thoughts here?  With this apporach, I'd really just have to paint up another 19 greatswords and the demigryphs.  Not so bad...  I may post in the Parade ground for input too...

PS - for those actually interested in my painting, I've been working on my Bretonnian ogres.  Also, I just basecoated my Imperial Griffon as my treat for June/July.  Whoopie!  Might even start painting today.......

Quadruple post... records must be shattering somewhere.  I wanted to share with you that my Imperial Griffon has consumed more time thus far than any other model I've ever painted - even more than the crazy high elf eagle surfer.  These wings are a ridiculous pain because of how I'm approaching them.  That said, the feathers are almost done (should finish tonight) and THEN I can actually paint things which aren't giant surfaces requiring tiny brush strokes.

It is the first Empire model I've painted in a long time and I'm stoked to share him with you.  Final color scheme of the griffon is blue-black lion parts (think panther) and purple-to-orange highlighted wings.  He's rad.

This dude is a pain to photograph, but you can get the idea.  I spent more time on those bloody wings than just about any other single model I've touched.  I'm liking them, though!

General thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

I need your help...

As I mentioned in a previous post, my old gaming group is going green for 2013.  I am slowly amassing my OOP orcs, but I'm not as big of a fan of the OOP goblins.  Further, I've had a vision of goblins in my head for a long time - since childhood, really.  They look like this:

I want to make some Rankin-Bass style goblins.  My tentative list just has goblin wolf riders.  No other goblins.  So I'm trying to figure out how I want to build these guys.

The way I see it, they have chicken legs, thick torsos, no neck, and frog-like heads.  I trust my sculpting abilities to pull off the heads, but the bodies are tougher.  I'm leaning towards using dwarf warrior torsos, actually, on goblin wolfrider legs, with sculpted heads.  Do you think that'd work?

If not, what are your suggestions?  If anyone has actually seen anyone produce a line of minis in this style, could you link them?  I'm calling on all of you as a collective body of awesome modellers....

Thanks for the help!

Here's some of Paizo's Goblins that are somewhat close and have a similar feel. They actually look better than they do in these pictures, especially if you give them a wash of Ogryn Flesh wash. These are the pre-painted plastics.

They also have some metal versions, produced by Reaper, as well.

They will also be releasing another expansion for their pre-painted line, but they will pretty much be duplicates of the metal figs shown above.

They can be purchased here, as well as from other sources.

So...

Been a while, eh, folks?

Having a new addition to the family, work complexities, and generally trying to keep pace with the world has slowed my hobby work a TON.  That said, I just got back from Adepticon and I am riding a wave of enthusiasm that is pretty inspiring.  If I can manage to make it work, I'm going to be building up my Empire again.  This makes me happy...

Without further ado, here's what I'm loosely planning.  Any comments to content or theme are VERY welcome, but I will be building on the army I already have.

EDIT - Additions:
Thematic ideas are roughly hewn around a griffon aerie.  The Amber Mage is critical.  I am currently enjoying the idea of a partnership between the amber mage and a knight order.  Huntsmen roam the forests, in part to feed the beasts, and in part to trick and befuddle foes.  The knights train and bond with their companions under the tutelage of the wizard (I swear, if it weren't a terrible idea for gaming, I'd want to give my TGM the wizard's hat...).  A strong flier base is obvious as the mage accepts all kinds of students and their mounts.  Who knows, maybe I even try to work out some crazy griffon breeding program into my fluff.

As for models, I have some of these done.  I need good models for my IC knights, assuming they make the list, and some ideas to make my pegasi unique.  I have one true pegasus already (Oxycutor Secret Santa!!!!) and am pondering using IOB high elf griffons for a second and third foundation for conversions.  I could also go another route and have a pegasus, young griffon, and an eagle to cover a variety of fliers, even though they'd all count as pegasi... thoughts on that one?  Also, if anyone has any ideas on how to customize demigryphs, I'm all ears!
The only requirements are - 1-2 Griffons, Captains on Pegasi, and some huntsmen (because they're cool).  I'm toying with the idea of running the following list:

Wizard Lord of Beasts @ 420
Lvl4
Griffin
The White Cloak

Templar Grand Master @ 179
Sword of Might
Shield

Captain @ 155
BSB
Full Plate
Shield
Lance
Dragon Helm
Pegasus

Captain @ 135
Full Plate
Shield
Lance
Helm of the SkavenSlayer
Pegasus

Captain @ 128
Full Plate
Lance
Enchanted Shield
DragonBane Gem

14X Inner Circle Knights w/ Mus & Std, The Steel Standard @ 405
12X Knights with Greatweapons w/ Mus & Std @ 284 (Already have 6 painted and 4 more built)

10X Huntsmen
10X Huntsmen

4 X Demigryph w/ Mus & Std @262
Banner of the Eternal Flame

4X Demigryph w/ Mus & Std @ 267
Banner of Swiftness

Total: 2395

Stop teasing, man - we want to see pictures! This was a week ago! We want pics! :)

I absolutely love the idea of the griffon horde - I've used the IoB griff as a counts-as-Peggy myself, and it works very well indeed. The conversion is surprisingly easy (I put the Griffon general on the back - the work of a few minutes - I even managed to save the reins and the sword from the High Elf). Will this Griffon army be Hochland too, or is it going to be a different color scheme?

You should get some Knights Panther in there - they might fit well with the Amber mage look (the pelts are brown and tawny, while the blue cloth and armor would be a striking contrast to that and the existing red-and-white-and-green Hochlandish colors).

But, seriously, we want pics.

Tee hee. I'll see what I can do, DK.

I'm thinking of making my IC knights Demi-hippogryphs. I need to see what it looks like to put a gryphon head on a horse, but that's the way I'm leaning.

As for the theme, it'll stay close to my Hochland army so I can maintain a cohesive army when I want to play bigger games.

You know you want to.

That mini for the NPC is fantastic.  I like your expression on her more than the one of the Figone website.

Slow and steady... Here's my model that I'm using as a BSB on peg.  Hope you like him!  If anyone has any thoughts or other recommendations, please let me know.  I know you can't see his base, but it is just my standard rocky/soily/grassy/flocky base and I haven't cleaned up the edges yet... ;-)  Enjoy!

Thanks for the feedback!

@ Darkknight - for the feathers, I based in Imperial Blue, did some manual striping with a mid of ultramarine's blue and sick blue, did a glaze with diluted sick blue, and did the final manual striping with falcon turqoise. Rather labor intense, but it works well on the broad, smooth feathers. I did the same basic thing with my general on griffon a few pages back.

Thanks, man! That's such a vibrant, bright color - with some lovely depth. I have a griffon of my own (same model) and I wanted to get a really bright blue on the feathers (I was going to go with some red on there, too - with a bright tiger body). But that color - with the blue-green depths to it - is fantastic. I'll have to dig through the paints and see if I have the colors to match - some of those are new colors, right?

I'm sure I can get something similar.

Lovely kingfisher blue effect, like on a, umm, kingfisher.  :eusa_clap:

Is sick blue really a colour???

I'm still using a Vallejo game color set I bought in college. Best $200 I spent...

All the colors are from that line.

My goal with my fliers in this army is give them a certain amount of vibrancy while keeping the palette of my empire army intact. So far, so good, I think...

One of my lords is a Beast Mage lord on a pegasus.  With the combined profile, I feel quite comfortable using this excellent Mierce mini for him.  Aside from the general fuzziness (broad depth to focus on) and the third picture which overly emphasizes the split between the wings, I'm happy with him.  Hope you enjoy!  If you have any recommendations, please let me know. :-)

Hi everyone!

Been a while... I have gotten some painting done for 2015 Adepticon stuff, just haven't had much time to post pictures.  That said, I had a few hours to meaningfully play with my airbrush this holiday season (Merry Christmas to all!).  This is my first big effort with it and, overall, I'm pretty pleased.  This is Deathclaw for KF Ascendant.  What do you think?  Do I need to further white-line feathers?  Do I need to lighten the tiger-body?

Thanks for everyone's support and patience as I fail to photograph/post all of my work...

First of all: Excellent paint job / work with the airbrush!!!  :eusa_clap:

Further white-lining of the feathers might be a good idea if you want to achieve more contrast and overall a brighter look. Another option if you want to keep it darker: Use glazing to add more shading to the feathers.

The tiger body looks like a canvas to me, perfectly painted, but not like fur yet.  Not sure what to do about that though.

Nice mini, especially when the picture size is reduced to real scale.

Maybe highlight the reds more? Everything else works perfectly. :)
