Title: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: GamesPoet on December 26, 2018, 02:40:13 PM
I'll be finishing up December 2018 first, although for those who want to get a jump start on January and beyond ...

- - -

From the 2018 thread:

Quote
Here's how it works ...

Each month, anyone who is interested in the challenge, puts up what their painting or scenery goal is for the month or both, whatever a person wants to aim to complete by the end of the month.  The goals get tallied and as a person finishes a goal or more, they report back in here to let us know.  The goals that are completed are bolded, and we keep moving on from one month to the next, ideally with new goals each month.

Pictures are not a necessity, although welcome, and instead just self-accountability through sharing the journey with others.  Sometimes folks sit out a month or two if life gets too crazy, but we keep coming back and creating and making the effort to complete things that help make the hobby so enjoyable.  Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don't, attempting to not over commit, and we hang together in accomplishing much that we might not otherwise get done over the current year.

I'm participating in the second Old World Army Challenge starting in January. I will be painting a small Sea Elf contingent. The challenge is 200 points based on 3rd or 4th ed. lists (I'm doing 3rd) per month for 6 months. There is one ”free” month, so 5 months of painting means we each end up with an approx. 1000 pt. army at the end.

For January I have prepped 10 archers and 5 seekers (scouts).

I'll try and do those Sartosan Pirates I mentioned earlier - the ones who got put to one side for the light horsemen. They're glued, converted and undercoated, so I'm quite a ways in!

I have a bit of an eclectic mix of stuff to work on. So my goal is going to be two space marines, 3 stormcasts and two nighthaunt guys.

Maybe if I find time I'll try basecoating my new Blackstone Fortress stuff. Depends strongly on the weather.

Let's try and keep some momentum going

Goal 1 - 16 Orcs w Great Weapons
Goal 2 - something Undead for the Carpe Noctem painting contest
Goal 3 - 10 Orc Archers
Goal 4 - 5 Trolls

I put the Undead second because the deadline is very early in February

Hmm January goal, at least it's not to paint horses..
Most likely it will be to finish either 12 teutogen guards or 12 greatswords plus some additional dwarfs/halflings to put into the spearmen unit and other units. Also one goal is to find a mm41 ogre (the one with the 2 handed sword in the ground) for a reasonable price. Might also start on my ostlanders for mordheim.

The local GW store is holding a Legions of Legend event over the next few months (basically painting a few units etc. every fortnight and none of their dates fall at the end of the month. Due to a few problems I couldn’t enter last year’s event and I might have to resort to using some of that events un-entered units.  One way or another targets for January should be:-

12 Jan a Unit
26 Jan a Leader
2 Feb a Space Marine Hero

I still owe my friend a few space marines which he understands will get done eventually but probably not this month.

Goal Number One met for me... though you'll see here how adding command to my units has made them all funny sizes and I may have to hunt down, buy and paint more miniatures to correct this...

I've made a start on the Trolls for Goal 4 while I wait for a nice day to undercoat the Undead for Goal 2 - I think I can work on them all at once, whereas the Orcs take up more room on my table.

So, that shitload of miniatures I'm supposed to paint for a tourney that's a month and a half away  :icon_redface:

Crossbowmen and huntsmen are done, save for basing, which I don't have the hobby supplies for at the moment. That, and some heraldry on the banner, but I count that as an optional extra, and something I'll likely do in one go for a whole lot of units at once anyway.

As I said in the last thread, I expected to just do a quick rehabilitation job on the huntsmen, but I got carried away and took it a bit further. Crappy photo doesn't quite do them justice.

Then, gryphknights. Since I haven't painted any before, I decided to do one ready prototype before painting any further:

That leaves me at 5 more gryphknights, 50 halberdiers and 2 rocket batteries to go. I think I will do the remaining gryphknights first, now that I got the hang of painting them, for the sake of maximum assembly line. Halberdiers can be left last, as I can better get away with playing them unfinished, they should still count as painted, even if not up to my usual tabletop standard. Let's hope it won't come to that.

I just filed the ends of 22 bits of steel rod to prepare them for having 6th edition halberd heads attached to them. Tedious work, I had to amuse myself by watching the super extended director's cut of The Unknown Soldier (almost 5 hours long) while doing it. Going to do some serial production on 5 gryphknights next, start off by drybrushing steel.

It isn't much, but it will be a good start of the year if those are all done.

Come to think of it, there exists probably a number of similarly named works. This one is unrelated to Sajer but about much the same, life on the WW2 Eastern Front, written by a Finnish veteran. The film is a very recent (2017) big-budget production (by Finnish standards anyway), a semi-remake of an old movie classic that gets shown on national TV every year on independence day. The film manages to portray war (both in and out of combat) in a gritty realistic way and how it affects those fighting it, but at times it felt like a series of impressions without proper story coherence. It doesn't deliver on character development as much as it could have, even though it adds scenes about the characters' home life that weren't even in the original book. With a few notable exceptions though. That's why, all in all, I'd rate the film as good but not great.

Did I mention that I'm in the middle of an apartment move? That just happened, some sudden and unexpected developments.

The five griffon knights have been drybrushed steel, and the leonine parts of the mounts' bodies have been painted, washed, highlighted and drybrushed. I'd say I'm about halfway done with them.

Well I've been a bit motivated to attack some projects these last couple of days.

I went through a box of older Empire figures and sorted them into some plastic trays for creating some units.

I also bought some craft store paints for painting my first MDF building that I'm going to put together.  I've been collecting some of these kits over time, and it is about time to start making some of them.

Going to break out my Late Achaemenid Persians to work on an Impetus army for use in an upcoming mini-tourney in May.

And of course there are the 6 mounted crossbowmen ... lol. :icon_mrgreen:

I have some of those archers. They bring back so many memories of gaming of old.

Meanwhile, my cathedral 'film-set' interior is coming on alright, slowed only by the need to produce some new figures for a council of war story to precede the next mahoosive campaign battle.

I was given descriptions by the Portomaggioran player, which I will quote here.

'Alessio' (Lord Alessio Falconi, the player's own character and ruler of his realm) 'is large with blonde hair. Politician and charming but his main aim is the increase in power of his city.'

I gave two options - modifying an existing figure or using a newly made one.
The player chose the painted figure. Good choice (he's my W-E avatar!)

'Hakim' (Wizard Lord, creator of the Coloussus) 'is an Arab with black tash and goatee, I use the paymasters model. Light wizard uses a lot of words but says little not to fond of priests in general.'

'Ned' (Condottiere Ned Black) 'is another large man with black hair and carries a blue and white Eagle. Wears gold armour. Empire born tends to be direct but a skilled general.'

'Hans' (Artillerist, Hans Weidmuller) 'is normal size with brown hair and wears the colours of portimaggo (yellow and red) quiet and a little deaf in his left ear.'

'Marcus' (Tilean Noble, Marcus Portelli) 'is an older man balding with a sharp temper and bad rep outside of his cavalry units who adore him.'

So I came up with these ...

I didn't like Marcus, however (who I had scraped some hair off to make him balding) and asked the player if he could be completely bald so that I could use this figure (my favourite of all these).

The player loved it.

I also needed a dismounted, chatting version of young Lord Silvano of Pavona.

And a similar one of the halfling Lord of Poliena. I scoured the web for an hour seeing if I could find one. I couldn't. So I scoured my bits boxes and, perhaps bizarrely, decided to quickly convert a bloodbowl figure ...

Here are the Portomaggiorans completed:

And here are the others:

'General' Marsilio has been left with hardly any command by his employer, all foot soldiers, which is why he has dismounted and chosen to use the massive axe in battle as a suitably hefty infantry weapon. The 'captain' is actually just a unit champion, but he had obviously been a soldier for sometime, probably in Empire employ, and was happy to put the money into looking the part. The halfling featured in an earlier story mounted on a pony and armoured like a Bretonnian knight. Here you can see he has decided if he is to serve in a besieging force (an army of 6000 pts with no horse soldiers - the horse have been sent away for strategic reasons) then he might as well go the whole hog and equip himself like a foot soldier.

Perhaps confusingly, the Portomaggioran player and the Pavonan player both have Empire armies in blue and white. I tried therefore to make a slightly different shade of blue for Lord Silvano. Also, Verezzo's colours are blue and yellow, which when combined with the yellow and red of the actual city of Portomaggiore (the blue and white is Lord Alessio Falconi's family livery), leads to even more potential confusion. Ah well.

I'll post the cathedral interiors soon, although I might put the link to the story with the pics in when it is done.

I’ve completed my targets for this month, although I did cheat a little. I couldn’t enter the store’s Legion of Legend last year but had started some units which I had since finished. I’ve entered the Daughters of Om as my leader and first unit as a start for this year’s competition. I’ve also completed my Space Marine Hero who is waiting to be taken to the store at the weekend. As an addition my friend has received three of his Space Marines.

During the month I have been working on my Legion entries but didn’t want to have to rush them, hence the cop-out entries. I have three units part painted but only need to enter two of them in February. I still have 12 Space Marines in various stages of build and paint work.

Target for February:-
2 units to be completed and entered on 9th and 23rd Feb.

Any Marine completed will be a bonus.

My goal changed for the month, I needed to swap the 5 scouts to an oldschool bolter & crew part way through the month. Got them all done. They are up on my entry at the OWAC site: https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2019/01/zerotwentythrees-january-sea-elves-200.html

February's goal will, once again, coincide with my monthly OWAC entry: 5 scouts (for real this time) and a chariot.

Also, I hope I have found a achievable goal for February.

Add 5 bog zombies to that... Going to do those so I can try to get a game or two of Rangers of Shadow Deep in.

Nope, Mantic plastics painted like bog corpses. Here's the first set I did last year along with an explanation and pic of an real life bog corpse:

I finished two space marines, and got halfway done a bunch of other stuff.

So I completed two marines at least!

My goal for February is to finish 3 stormcast and paint two nighthaunt, plus two beastmen.

Or mine.

Having completed all four of my January goals, going to keep it simple for February cos I'm going to be out watching bands a lot.

So just a regiment of Orcs with Maces and Shields for me. I think there are 15 of them.

If I do get time beyond that, there are some heroes and champions and so on I can work on.

023 ... did you finish your sea elf archers? I can't recall and couldn't find it.

- - -

Finished reviewing composition of Late Persian army for Impetus, and irritated it is at 301 points.  We have a 300 point limit, and although folks won't care over one point, it still has me flumoxed.  MDF building is mostly done, some dry brushing and then finish construction.

For February ... Going to finish the MDF building and figure out which Persian cavalry I'm going to paint.  I need to really focus on getting Persians painted between now and May!

- - -

Final Tally of January 2019

023 ... 10 sea elf archers and oldschool bolter & crew part.
Padre ... interior of cathedral.
Gankom ... 2 space marines, 3 stormcasts and two nighthaunt guys.
Shadespyre ... 16 Orcs w Great Weapons, 4 Undead, 1 Halfling, 5 Trolls, 10 Orc Archers.
Irishzero ... finish 12 teutogen guards or 12 greatswords, some dwarfs/halflings for spearmen unit, find ogre with 2 handed sword.
JAK ... a Unit, a Leader, a Space Marine Hero.
Konrad ... 5 more gryphknights, 50 halberdiers, and 2 rocket batteries.
Novogord ... finish 8 Old Orlock Gang, 1 dryad, and 2 halfling archers.
Borderguy ... 12 Dryads, 8 Hearth Guard, finish 1 CFM mdf building.
GP .. 1 small MDF building, review how to go with Late Achaemenid Persians.
Heinrich ... forge world mammoth and marauder crew.
Warlord ... glue blood dragon vampires on foot, glued converted mounted chaos lord and 3 high elf drake riders.

(Completed items bolded.)

- - -

Start of February Goals
JAK ... 1 of 2 units to be completed and entered on 9th and 23rd Feb, Boomwheel.

Gankom ... finish 3 stormcast, 2 nighthaunts, 2 beastmen.
Novogord ... last of halfling warband.
Shadespyre ... 15 Orcs with Maces and Shields, maybe heroes and champions.
Warlord ... maybe 3 zombie ogres.
GP ... finish small MDF building, (#?) Late Perisan Cavalry.

So today I glued 15 knights that I had been putting off for years.

I also intend to glue 10 more orcs with hand weapon and iron fist, and convert 4 black orcs to have great weapons.

Zombie ogres may get deprioritised to next month.

Posting here slipped my mind somehow. I met my January goals and set February goals. For February I planned to paint 10 Wood Elf War Dancers, 8 Viking Warriors and 8 Anglo-Saxon Warriors. I am also converting a Reaper Wood Elf druid into a Elf mage a friends daughter drew for her EnD character.

January's models:

Nice to see Borderguy churning out a lot of nice miniatures, too.

Looking ahead, I'm going to try and paint a dozen Goblin Wolf Riders during the rest of February and into March.

I've also started assembling a model for the "Ancient Evil" contest category over on Carpe Noctem, which I'll also try and paint in March.

I'm still liking your orc color pallette better than the newer garish-greens.

Whoops, forgot my own update. I'm done for Feb.

023 ... 5 scouts and a chariot, 5 bog zombies.

Bog zombies were done early in the month.

The scouts are done, but I need to wait for the OWAC post to be published before I can show the pic.

I forgot to take a pic of the chariot. I had planned on painting two. One for me (oldschool Eleven Attack Chariot) and one I owed a friend (HE lion chariot with a hero). I only got the latter done, and its now in his possession.

Starting to think about my March goals...

Mila Kunis is awesome and the timing with my photo is just the icing on the cake.
I really like the fleeing victims too, they even have dropped their weapons. 1 axe from greatswords is next to the rock on the left side and a dagger (also frpm greatswords) is just in front of the mammoths right foot.

Thanks for the kind words!

I've become a historical mini I painter primarily ZeroTwentyThree, so I'm glad somebody likes them. Your Bog Zombies look great. I think you nailed that peat leather skin. What models are those?

Hmmmm - The base is 8" * 12" or 20cm * 30cm - mine is 24 cm x 24 cm, so your base is a little bigger. That guy is enormous!  :icon_eek:

2nd unit completed and entered, although a little late due to conjunctivitis or some similar eye infection, so Feb targets met. Eyes nearly right again.

Next month the only thing I have to make is a Genestealer cult figure for a GW competition. The final of the Legion of Legend is mid-month but as all the figures are built and painted it’s just finding a safe way to transport them to the shop.   I still have 13 of my friend’s Space Marines in various stages so I’d better make the effort to finish them.

I’m a bit behind with taking photos so will also try to bring my thread up to date next month.

It could be craft paper from a craft/hobby shop, or it could be rescaled doll house wall paper. I can't keep track any more. I have a bunch bought/printed and stashed.

Thinking on that wallpaper, I think that stuff might be from hobby lobby. In the scrap booking area, Games Poet.

Not great pictures, I just can't get the lighting / colour balance to be consistent at the moment.

I started on my "Ancient Evil" model, after a couple of false starts I think it's not embarrassingly bad now so I'm going to press on with it. Not expecting to do a huge amount other than that this month, but we'll see  :icon_wink:

All warriors are built!

An unexpected agreement from my wife to visit a hobbystore ended with me buying the new nurgle box with blightlords and blightkings, and an extra box of blightkings. Thus I have built 11 blightkings instead of marauder horsemen! :D Returning to work has slowed process but I hope to find time to build the gorebeast chariots before the end of March.

Wow. This is a cool model, and I love the subtle, dark detail.

A couple of things that caught my eye:

-the checkered pattern ends a bit rough on the horse's forehead.

-the dagger is a bit simple as is. You could check some examples of NMM, and try to achieve that effect with blues. Definitely add also darker hues.

-if the dagger glows, should there be some blue reflection around it on the robe?

-horses have bigger irises. The eyewhite shouldn't be seen on both sides of the iris, and the iris should be rounder.

It's a great model, finely painted. The above is not meant as criticism, but as suggestions if you feel you would like to try them out.

That's really useful, thanks. Particularly as they are the things I was worried about but didn't know if / how to fix them. I want to make the dagger cold and otherworldly rather than glowy, I think.

The model itself is the old Citadel Witch King, mounted on a newer plastic horse, so I'm trying to mix Nazgul with regal.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was aiming for. Originally I had a more intricate pattern in mind but settled on something less ambitious so I could make some progress! Happy with the colour choice and end effect.

Working on some changes as I write...

Yes, the 1985 range!

Edits.... happier with the horse's eye, dagger is less glowy but still not right? Tempted just to make it bright silver and leave it at that...

The horse's eyes look very good, totally natural!

The dagger, if I can say this, looks a bit messy now. I'd suggest to go darker, and let the few bright spots enhance the glow. Check NMM painting. Here's the first guide to weapons I came by: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHUg8XLlNZE. (I've never painted NMM myself, so cannot really comment on the technique.)

Another, simple way to paint a magical blade could be using a very shiny silver, wash it with a blue wash, maybe two layers of wash at places, and then highlight the edges with shiny silver again. I know this works great for rust, and imagine the bluish tint would work towards a magical feeling.

I’ve completed all my goals for this month; genestealer cult figure built painted and entered, miscalculated on number of Space Marines but have finished them all and picture below shows my Legion of Legend entry on its return from the shop.

Health issues will stop me from having much time in April so I’ll not set any targets for then but as the next local GW painting competition is a Chaos Space Marine on 11 May I’ll be working towards that when I can.

March is done. 16 spear elves. Had planned on doing shields, but need to acquire them first. That is turning out to be trickier than I had planned.

More words and another photo at my OWAC entry (http://"https://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2019/03/zerotwentythrees-march-sea-elves-212-pts.html").

For April, the only commitment I'm making is to finish the giant I left off with last April. For the rest of the month, I'm leaving it up in the air -- though still giant related (http://"https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2019/03/almost-april-something-big-on-horizon.html").

Nice painted Z!

I feel your pain on shield hunting. I needed 10 more of an older GW resin special order shields to complete a unit of Empire swordsmen. Fleabay prices were insane. I got lucky and found enough stashed in a box of miscellaneous modelling crap. Apparently very infrequently I pre-plan.

I took a quick look and all i see is Scibor offering just shields. Sending you a pm to discuss a possibility.

Thanks Padre! They are indeed rubbish in hand to hand combat... And shooting isn't that great in Mordheim (for me at least), so they are rather challiging to play.

This ...

So far for April I completed:

4 orc bolt throwers - 2 orc trebuchets - 15 orc crew - George The Giant - Giant Two Headed Troll

It's surprisingly easy to get stuff done when it's not just more Orc infantry... I guess I should paint some more Orc infantry next, though!

Thanks, I think  We should probably do battle AFTER I decide how to do all the bases?

I have to admit that "I'll decide that later" seemed a better idea *before* I'd painted 130 odd models...

I've done it. I've finished 4 Banshee's, 2 Glaivewraith, a Bladegheist revenant, Balin the dwarf and 2 Blackstone Fortress Beastmen. (Although I still haven't decided on a base scheme for the beastmen.)

I not only completed by goal, but above and beyond as well. Woohoo!

I didn't really bother with the face as it's so hidden by the hat, but I might go back and make him look a little more human and a little less undead! A much lovelier model than my clumsy painting suggests here

Did manage to get a few done so far:

Ghark Ironskin, built and painted
five gutter/tunnel runners
Lord Skrolk
Organ Gun
9 miners
7 crossbow dwarves (8 with a wench)
three hammer-bearing longbeards
5 artillery crewmen
oldest white dwarf model
Thunder Lizard
tichi huichi and five raiders
an old 4th edition carrion model.

Once I am done moving I'll snap some pics of them

That's a good effort, well done!  :eusa_clap:

Thinking about NEXT month now... I see myself being very busy but I want to finish the army sooner, not later, so I'm going to set myself the challenge of painting BOTH remaining infantry units. so that'll be round about 20 Orc Spearmen and 10 Orc Bodyguards

I also want to get some modelling work done on at least one Vampire Counts project and at least one Empire related project, but that seems very greedy at this point!

I made my April goal, finishing the Heresy giant I started last April. In addition to that goal, I started prepping one of the next giants, plus painted some more trolls.

May is going to be rough. Work is getting busy and I will be doing quite a but of travelling. But I'm going to try keeping up with the Old World Army Challenge and paint an elf mage, 10 spear elves, a standard bearer, and a champion.

Health will still be having an adverse effect this month but I am on target to complete a Chaos Space Marine for the local GW painting competition on 11 May – so this is my only target.

The next GW comp. is a Human of the Imperium – any human 40k except Space Marine or Adeptus Custodes(whatever this is) by 6 July. I’ll hopefully start that this month and it’ll become my June target.

I’m also doing bits on other projects but as progress is slow I’ll not be setting targets I’ve no chance of doing.

Padre isn't the only one.

For me it was, "Reaper makes metal figures? Really?"  I didn't see any in the photo, and shrugged my shoulders.

I didn't reread the post nor re-look at the photo.  Too little time, and I let the idea go, figuring if they really did sell metal figures, I'd see or hear of it again. :icon_lol:

b - errrm, Reaper DO make metal miniatures, they always have done! Most of their range is still metal. Most of the earlier Bones plastic models are actually re-moulds of the metal range...

Week off work and have some downtime this afternoon! Experimented with a red colour primer today on the Halberdiers... it's not too bad, but it didn't go into the little nooks and crannies on these minis very well compared with other sprays I've used. A lot of my figures in the background are still quite glossy and thus awaiting a coat of matt varnish (and many still need basing):

Artillerymen:

Pirate Gobbos:

@von Zorn, that's an interesting choice of primer. What contrasting colour are you going to use?

@Padre: Steady progress. Those Pirate Big'uns are absolutelu huge compared to their gobbo brethren!  They still look a bit lonely on 40mm bases. Have you considered adding a gobbo on their base? This would tie them better to the gobbos in the unit, I think.

I like the Big Uns as they are as in my mind they count as being lumbering Brutes as effective as 4 goblins. Besides the 40 mm basis are not fixed to them, but are extension bases that their own 25mm bases fit into.

Fluff wise, all my giants have been united by a formerly nomadic Storm Giant who's now trying to find them a home. Complicated by the fact his new 'kingdom' consists of hill, frost, fire and other giants. All of whom hate each other.

Painting wise I finished my 8 hobbit dwarves. I'm slowly continuing to work on a Russ and Chimera, as well as a handful of other random dwarves. I have an AoS game at the end of June and my new goal is to try and have the whole dwarf/duardin army fully painted and ready. I have maybe half of it to do.

Last minute check-in before traveling for the remainder of the month. I only got 2 of the 10 spear elves done, but did get the mage, champ, and standard (sort of...) painted. I also did a small themed terrain piece (of which I think I will do more in the future.

I'll post pics when they go live on the OWAC website.

I'm also hoping to get caught up on reading everyone else's posts & updates on the forum (and elsewhere) soon. It's been a very hectic & exhausting month...

Not really on my list for this month, but I did it anyway - a slightly converted Briar Elk for my Vampire Counts army. You can blame our friend 023 for spotting this addition to the Warploque Miniatures range!

Awww, thanks. Quite a simple paint job on a rather elegant model, I just added the vine and roses as usual.

Of course I'm *supposed* to be painting orcs...

Very nice work!

I have managed to get the painting done of my May goals. All the Halberdiers are painted, as is the cannon and its crew, and I also painted a Light Wizard. However, I am not sure I will manage to get the basing finished before the month's end with only one day and evening to go. I was really lazy when assembling and so had to fill some base slots with green stuff this evening, leaving me only tomorrow evening to build up the base surface then paint and flock. I'm calling it a semi-victory in the sense that I have technically painted everything...  :smile2:

That's perfect! The personal details and paint work so well with the figure.

There are quite a few Warploque figures that have caught my attention for various reasons. A lot of great sculpts. This one seems like it was made for your army.

For June, I need to finish the final month of the Old World Army Challenge. I've set the following goal: The classic Elven Attack Chariot and 8 more spear elves.

Work is looking to continue beimg hectic and travelly (I'm currently in RI/MA) through June, so this will definitely be a challenge! But I'm determined to finish both the OWAC and the chariot that's been sitting unpainted for decades!

I love the giant shell terrain, very unusual.

I didn't get any further with my orcs this month, so I've just plonked them down on the desk in the way of doing anything else and maybe THAT will help!

June's target:

24 Spear Orcs
Army Standard Bearer (not his standard though!)
2 Orc Shamen

This might be all the Orcs, now. I have maybe as many more left but have lost interest in painting them, to be honest.

June target: a new warplightning cannon, modified to make it 'self-propelled'. Plus some skaven 'characters' and non-combatants. Don't tell anyone in my campaign, however, that I am working on these.

Understand that though. Surely getting close to finishing them all and be done with it is slightly motivating?

It's already bigger than I really intended, and it's over-running my 6 month target, too. I might pack the spare minis away to come back to, but I'm keen to get onto other things.

June will be another difficult month but I am still doing small bits towards the hobby. I am well on the way with my Human of the Imperium and he will be my target to finish in June ready for the competition date of 6 July.

The next local GW competition after this will be a Stormcast Eternal on 3 August and I’ve started a figure for it. I’m also being encouraged to enter the World-Wide GW Everchosen competition on 27 July so I’ll have to put a bit more effort into that, not that I’ve decided what to do yet. These two will take up all my free time in July I expect and then I might just be able to start one or two of the projects I’ve had to put on hold for the past few months.

I finished my hobbit dwarves! Wooo! Since then I've been adding random colors to groups of about 10 random guys at a time until I got some motivation for something specific. Now I have it!

I have a big Age of Sigmar game at the end of the month and I'm going to bring some dwarves. My goals is to have the whole army fully painted and up to date. So I need to finish up 10 hammerers, 10 Irondrakes and possibly a handful of characters. I'm undecided just what characters I want to bring so that may change a litt.e

24 Orcs

Army Standard Bearer, a Shaman (actually the C10 Half-Orc Cleric-Assassin!) and a Witchdoctor (Chronicle Minis Mormo Jabberbinder)

Currently mixing old emulsion and acrylic paints together to make lots of (cheap) earth coloured paint to do all those bases!

I have finished the Warp-Lightning cannon! It is a kit-bash of the old metal lightning cannon and the new plastic Screaming Bell that were never intended to go together! The Screaming Bell frame has been tipped to one side, and had bits chopped off.

I like the end result, though something tells me it isn't as 'cool' as it might have been had I thought about it a little more before I started sawing and gluing etc. If time travel were possible I would change stuff around. Ah well.

I have so many other skaven bits to do (unit fillers, machine crew, globadiers, giant rats, 3 Rat Ogres, several clanrats (to get the units to army list minimums) and even some skaven clerks!) that I doubt I'll get the done by the end of the month. But I am glad to have finished this ...

It is another 'self-propelled' engine, although in this pic you can't really see the engine bits - as per usual, I have accidentally hidden them inside the shell!!!! (I keep doing this.)

Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Padre on June 24, 2019, 08:50:06 PM
I had to use wood screws to join the metal gun to the plastic frame, then hide the 'phillips' screw ends! Making the various cog-wheels of the driving part was incredibly fiddly and time consuming, but ultimately pointless as it can't really be seen! There's even a second warpstone shard inside to power the motive engine.

That looks utterly brilliant, and as has been said, any imperfections that might be upon it just add to the Skaven flavour.

Hmm, Skaven flavour doesn't sound very nice, can't see Walkers taking up that one...

My June goal was to finish the 6 "Outriders" that will complete my 1000 point army, which as of the weekend just gone I achieved. I forgot to post that goal here at the start of the month... Anyway, being ahead of schedule I'll now call my June goal... VARNISH AND BASING... of the entire army. I'm a bit behind on that bit...

Padre, I saw your Skaven war machine on FB -- I love it! As far as hidden bits, I would imagine they're more visible in person than in a photo anyway.

June was a rough month with a lot of time on the road (er, in the air?) for me, but I managed a last minute burst of painting to finish my monthly goal, which is also my final entry for the Old World Army Challenge. I will post pics as soon as they go live on the OWAC site.

Thinking about what to paint in July. I've been doing so much rank & file (well, and a few giants...) I'm thinking about a monstrous critter for a change of pace. I have a small stash of old 80's era dragons, and a couple or newer Reaper monsters (jabberwock and Goremaw!) I'll mull over my July goal for another day or two.

Two unit fillers (2 by 2) to bulk out the large clan-rat regiments further - a rat stirring something hot and foul, and a totemic 'skaven-ey' collection of banners ...

Some dudes to be more characterful front liners (including a scary two sets of hand blades guy!) ...

Bog standard giant rats to bulk out my large pack further ...

A clerk, because there's a lot of paperwork to be done ...

(This guy has a scroll from the really useful Frostgrave plastic wizards set.

Two extra globadiers to turn my little band all the way up to 11 ...

Some slave war engine pushers to keep the non-self propelling engines on the move ...

And another pack of three Rat Ogres ...
One an old metal one, the others part of something else (I think one goes on the giant bell thing). I converted them so that one is restraining the other with a huge chain!

So .... Padre ... 3 rat ogres, 2 clanrat unit fillers, 9 clanrats, 1 clerk, 1 nasty dude (the double-hand-blade feller), 3 giant rats, 4 slave-engine-pushers, 2 globadiers

July goals achieved, despite real life really rearing its ugly head in the last couple of week. Pictures to follow, maybe, though I still feel that my future goal declarations should (and will) be Warhammer/fantasy related at least for this forum. For the record, the "paper strength" platoon is 31 men, being an Lt and three squads of ten each led by an NCO.

I don't think I set any July goals and I probably owe you some pictures, but the main highlight has been painting my standard bearers and basing the whole army... here are some pretty flags

My August goal will be to put the army to bed. That means maybe 30 more miniatures, mostly Red Goblins, to paint, and then some sort of overall army list.

Completed last month’s targets – Stormcast ready to go to shop tomorrow and although GP didn’t note it I did complete an entry for the GW Everchosen competition last weekend.

Not sure how Everchosen was to be judged but the local store haven’t released the results on Facebook yet so don’t know how I did.

Cannot show any pictures as Flickr appear to be having some sort of upgrade and I cannot log on – even after following their “helpful” what to do if you can’t log-on guide.

Ok, campaign stuff done as far as I can just now ... the players have to send me orders and questions and what not now.

Which means I have undercoated 24 pirate half-pike men that DamoB (who fell off the forum when the forum stopped recognising him) gave me. So goals now = 24 pirate half pikes plus a bunch of bits and bobs (pirate dwarfs, a wine wagon, and other bits that might get done as I make progress with the pirates). There were officially only 16 half pike men but I have cut some axes and stuff off some others and drilled through so that they have half-pikes too!

DamoB gave me loads of pirates, none of which I already owned. Foundry, and lovely (and expensive). Thanks DamoB.

I painted three!

Three peasants. Not painted terribly well, unfortunately. Quick & rough painting, about the best I can manage this month. I've got a plan and will be scrounging around for more peasants.

230 models in the end. There may be more in future, no project is ever really finished, but I've no specific plans right now.

I'm not sure what comes next. There are a few part-painted (undead) models on my bench, but I'm not very inspired by them.

The local GW painting competition for September is an Underworlds Warband which you are allowed to do more or less what you like with. The store manager suggested that having finished the City Watch I should take a break from Discworld, I hope he’s not disappointed.

Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Shadespyre on September 09, 2019, 12:22:41 PM
Yup, there are lots of them in my Vampire army, sometimes they are a little large alongside GW minis but it's not that important for characters. If I was growing up playing D&D *now*, I'm sure it'd be Reaper minis I'd be in love with for the rest of my life, not Citadel! They have some great sculptors on board. You could argue that Darksword make even nicer miniatures, but they are definitely out of scale with "Heroic 28mm" and the range is nowhere near as big.

Reaper also have their own fantasy rules system which they make minis aimed at, but I've no idea what it's like. Has anyone here looked at it?

I can't finish mine. There's a hitch, to do with poisoning myself with white spirit fumes for more than three decades. Oops! I missed the changing of the labels and hadn't read them for decades.
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Von Zorn on September 13, 2019, 06:06:39 PM
Whoa. What do you mean? You've made yourself ill from the fumes?
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Padre on September 13, 2019, 06:18:31 PM
Not sure. What I do know is that I have stupidly been breathing very dangerous fumes for 35 years, in confined spaces, without a proper understanding of the risk. Have you read the warnings on White Spirit? Central nervous system damage!!  I've been cleaning brushes with the stuff, every few minutes, whilst painting thousands upon thousands of figures, for vast stretches of time, in very ill-ventilated spaces, thinking that the warnings I originally read had not changed, and so not bothering to read the new ones. All the while allowing little puddles of the stuff to evaporate beneath my nose, under a hot lamp, then creating another puddle every few minutes to clean my brush. Ignorance really is bliss, until it is stupidly dangerous.

Maybe I have been lucky, and stopped just before it really chewed my grey matter to pieces? Only some sort of medical tests would tell. I can't really assess my own mind!

What I know is that I am now too afraid to finish the figures I was working on. Or that I will only do so in the kitchen with the door wide open!

Then I am making the move to acrylics like every one else. Why did I stubbornly stick with the devil I knew? Because I didn't realise what a devil it was!
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Artobans Ghost on September 13, 2019, 07:58:44 PM
Is your workshop in the basement? Are the walls stone or wood? You could get one of the more expensive bathroom fans and install it above your paint area and vent it outside through the floor joists. An expensive one $80 and up has very little noise so it would be pretty unobtrusive. Wire it in with your light and your switch will handle both. You won’t regret it.
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Padre on September 13, 2019, 08:03:35 PM
I'm just gonna give up on enamels. My cellar workshop is a stone cave 'tanked' with plastic. There's very little ventilation, which is why I have a dehumidifier running all the time!!

I will be moving on to acrylics. I hope I dodged the bullet with White Spirit. It basically rots you brain with repeated and prolonged exposure! 35 years! Sheesh. I am an idiot.

I am now asking on various Facebook painting groups which acrylics will lend themselves best to my black undercoat and block painting technique.
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Midaski on September 13, 2019, 08:12:42 PM
You should take some technical advice.

It may be that mixing it with the enamels negates some of the potential damage.

Then I am sure there are tests that can be done to see if you have suffered anything long term. The sooner you know, the more chance you have of treating and/or dealing with it.

I must admit, the danger was new to me.
I have used white spirit in household paint situations, and had jamjars of it sitting on windowsills above the kitchen sink, soaking paint out of paintbrushes.
Not quite your level but it has sat there for several days running.

Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Padre on September 13, 2019, 08:19:08 PM
My method of cleaning brushes, for 35 years, has been to dip the brush in white spirit, and stroke the brush in a wooden surface to clean it, dipping several times. Then drying on a tissue, and painting again. Every few minutes, as enamels are cruel to brushes! With little puddles, the wood and the tissue evaporating white spirit under my nose as the lamp warms it.

Basically, I must already have been mad to have used this technique. But familiarity really does breed contempt, and it was what I had done since the 80s, as a child. And it was just 'normal' practice.

Not sure I want tests. I really doubt there's anything they can do to reverse the damage (and I am forcing myself NOT to google this stuff otherwise I will start to imagine all sorts of ailments). So I'll only go for tests if symptoms start to manifest, i.e. my brain begins to melt.

I always had a bad long term memory, so that I have to re-re-re learn chunks of information for what I do. Bit I can't tell if it has got worse!
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Von Zorn on September 14, 2019, 06:19:52 AM
I think you may be lucky, Padre, as despite that rather intense exposure to fumes the odds are that you'd have been feeling some ill effects during the painting sessions if indeed you were breathing in strong fumes to the point of damage. Obviously such long term exposure probably wasn't great but I think if any lasting damage has been done you'd probably know about it by now. In any case, they haven't directly linked white spirit to neural damage in humans.

Probably best to go ahead and switch to acrylics though...

I have completed a goal (bar basing) although I am not sure whether it was an August or a September goal. 25 pirate pike. Probably the last bit one project I will ever use enamels on!

The Sartosans wanted something to face horse soldiers. They now got something. Might add some more ranks at a later date. I had fun converting some figures in to pike-armed fellows, and LOTS of fun figuring out how to base them as a unit, some at charge, some at port, some at shoulder and some at order. Crazy! Ah! But pirates are of course ... pirates!

What figures were used as the base for the pikemen creations?
Title: Re: Monthly Painting & Scenery Goals 2019 ...
Post by: Padre on September 27, 2019, 08:01:49 PM
They are Wargames Foundry pirates, mostly. Not sure about the officer and musician though. Most were 'half-pike' men, but with only 16 of those I had to fashion up some more to get a reasonable number, cutting off boarding axes, drilling through the hands and inserting a pike.

I was gonna do them as proper half-pike men, but I could not convince myself to hack half the length off the pikes. It is a Tilean campaign, so why shouldn't the Sartosan landing force attempt to use full length pikes?

I'm painting a single squad of space marines, at the moment, just for fun. I'm enjoying not having a big project on the go, for once!

023 ... 1 witch hunter, 8 10 of his followers, and 4 sea elves.

I finished my goal, plus a few extra.

4 sea elves

1 witch hunter, 10 of his followers (incl. animals) plus the 3 figures I painted last month.

Orctober is nigh upon us! Or half-Orctober in my case (again).

This is my goal, 25 warriors and a partially painted priestess.

Edit: I've decided that the priestess just doesn't fit with the rest of the half-orcs even though it's a nice sculpt. I'm not going to paint her.

About 95% done, so I wanted to share these. As always, a photo really shows up flaws (those skulls need tidying, for a start) but here are my 5 Mentor Legion Space Marines.

One of those things I always wanted to do back in the day, but never did. I've used Devastator heads with extra optics to depict the "Targeting Web" system Mentor squads can access.

The owl icon is hand painted so I've only included the best of the five in shot! They don't look too bad one at a time, they are a bit variable all seen at once. Embrassed to post these after 023's Sea Elf freehand tbh!

Also, all my pics have been coming out greenish for months now, still can't work out why...

Some great stuff happening this past month, wonderful!

I'll update the tally for Sept asap, and then start the tally for October.

Myself ... been on a roll with my hobby storage unit project, 4 weekends in a row spending 2 to 4 hours getting stuff moved and minimally organized into fantasy, sci-fi, historicals, terrain, books/mags/rules.  Expecting some more big picture organizing this weekend, and then eventually gettign inot the nitty gritty of sorting further before beginning to prioritize and start knocking off items on projects.

I did construct 6 Forgotten Worlds figures from the recent kickstarter, and looking forward to making more of them this upcoming month.

Good to see someone else flying the true Mentor colours – not chickening out like the ‘Eavy Metal Team. You should never feel embarrassed about showing your work, whatever state it’s in – a hand painted owl has more kudos than a red eagle head decal any day.

The first squad I did had spiders on their guns to represent the ‘web’

Keeping things simple this month after finishing my Orcs last month (so this is No-Orc-tober for me, I think). I'm away from home a lot in the next couple of weeks so I've got one Undead model and three Empire(ish) models on my painting table - specifically the Briar Queen (very fitting for my Vampire army) and three chaps who will be joining my Drakwald huntsmen, even though they are originally two wood elves and a Bret! That's a couple of the dozens of loose ends still in my "to do" box.

Now, this is a very advanced technique which you might not master at the first attempt...

1. Undercoat white
2. Paint all ethereal areas with Nihilakh Oxide
3. Highlight white (you can carefully drybrush this if the model's texture suits)

Ta da!

If you want to get a bit more technical you can drybrush white after the undercoat to really make highlight areas bright white, and you can go back and add more coats of Nihilakh Oxide to deepen the green or tidy up your drybrushing. I've done all my ethereal models this way, it works well on the deeply folded cloth look that most ghostly models come with.

It's the first day of my Summer Holidays! Yes, a little late and it's raining out so here are some miniatures:

First, some Empire(ish) minis... These are to add to my Drakwald huntsmen, or more specifically to the group of them I used to play Mordheim with. The spearmen are actually wood elves (Black Tree, perhaps?) but the hoods and slender build makes them fitting for youngbloods, maybe? The spears are old Zombie polearms which I modified to look like medieval glaive-guisarme-bill types of things, I think they could count as spears or halberds and no-one would cry.

The crossbowman is actually a Bretonnian squire, I think? Someone had hacked off his hands and bow, and while I was tempted to make him a sneaky assassin or arm him with a handgun, this just fitted together nicely. It's good to have another weapons option.

(https://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Mordheim/edited-image_zpstjtzsdtf.jpg)(https://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Mordheim/edited-image_zpsuyeezspc.jpg)

Not previously listed, this is an old RPG miniature painted for me by the GM of a Crusades based fantasy game. He used to be sat on a metal horse but over 15 years the ankles gave way, so I have put him on a (previously painted!) plastic GW horse instead. So a bit of glue and a dab of paint and Sir Raymond DeGaunt rides again! If his garb looks a bit unusual it's because he learned to respect and adopt the ways of the enemy, much to the discomfort of his fellows. He even went into battle with a bow...

I’ll not be taking part in the Monthly Painting Goals for the rest of the year. It’s not that I’ve stopped building/painting but I’ve started a project that will hopefully allow me to take part in the local GW shop’s ‘ Legion of Legend’ painting competition which should take place in the first three months of next year (you may remember I won this year’s event).

The project is not Discworld or Empire related and is a little out of my comfort zone. When I was given the Kharadron kit that became the base of the steveb tribute airship I was offered a number of other kits, about one I made the mistake of commenting “when that came out I thought about converting it into a steam tank”.  Somehow I have ended up with this kit but I cannot find any notes or remember how I had intended to convert it. As a result it is now being built as per the instructions (shock horror) and with parts from bits boxes has developed into a project.

As mentioned at the start of last month I’m concentrating on the local GW shop’s Legion of Legend’ painting competition next year. I have started a few items for this but as they have now released the entry dates I can prioritise my builds. During January I have to complete a unit (by the 11th) and a leader (by the 25th). I’ve a unit part built so will be attempting to complete that in December.

Most excellent progress 023.

I myself have finished the 20 new zombie cultists, using a mix of enamel and acrylics (I never knew this was possible).

Trouble was I needed LOADS of new zombie cultists. The vampire duchess had defeated a second army of cultists, and so had now resurrected many more to serve her, in addition to the ones already serving her lieutenant Biagino.

So I started working on these 20 wondering if I was going to have to get another 40 or so.

I used acrylics on a white acrylic undercoat for the flesh ...

Then I black undercoated the rest in enamel and painted my more usual style in both enamels and acrylics on top.

As I was painting I had some of the now obliterated Disciplinati di Morr on the table to try and get the colours to match on their zombified versions. It suddenly dawned on me that loads of the living army were in hoods and gloves, and so you can't tell if they are alive or undead. Thus, in an instant, by scattering the undead through the body, I now had a horde of 60 zombie cultists. Huzzah!

This makes me extra happy 'cos I thought I would never get to use the living Disciplinati di Morr army again.

Getting into the basing / diorama stage of my Hill Giant project, now. I quite like the desert badlands look of my WIP model, but it'll be green and leafy when I've finished, I think. There are three blank bases at present, these don't have models assigned to them and I'm not sure how to fill them, yet. I do have a couple more (smaller, metal) dire wolves but they are not very exciting tbh. I'm also wondering if I need to get more height into the back ground, especially behind the huge giant champion at the back...?

Looking good, and I do like the desert badlands look too. I really like that third figure from the left.

Is the large base for gaming or only display?

Display. You'd need a really big gaming table to be pushing around moving trays that big! I didn't even make it to particular dimensions. I only individually based the giants because

a - I'm still a gamer at heart
b - my painting isn't good enough to justify doing it just for display

I don't know any games that default to 65mm hex bases  :icon_wink:

I like the Hill Giant project alot!

Enjoy the badlands look, although can understand why having greenery could be good too.

I wouldn't worry about having height in the back.  It seems my eyes are drawn to the large leader guy, and then branches out to the others.  That is a good way to have the diorama "centered", if that is what your looking to achieve.

Thanks!

I've added an extra tree at the back, and a few other small details.

I'm going to go with grassy and green for this one, despite the badlands temptations. This is because if I do the other giants (Stone, Frost, Fire, Cloud, Storm) in a similar way, I don't think *any* of those will be green at all! Then I think I'll revisit the desert look for miniatures that are more classically "deserty". Like errrm scorpions or blue dragons or whatever.

Im back for December.  No pics becaise im traveling for work and dont have good net access.  But... I brought a pike of primed Dark Angels with me.  30 tactical marines, 6 veterans, 5 knight termites, and 6 bikes.  3 HQ bikes and 3 black knights. Nothing fantasy, I had to go with what was built.

Only update is that the 5 Termies are done.

Would love to update you with more Hill Giant WIP and get some feedback, but Photobucket is down so I can't...

By the way, I learned a thing about hexes - if you have a hex which is "x" cm across the flats, then you can fit 3 hexes which are each "x/2" cm across neatly inside it. So I would avoid using 65mm hexes in future and get 60 or 70mm (because guess what no-one makes 32.5mm hex bases as standard!)

Big boney dragon done. The gravestone is on a magnetized 20mm base, and can be removed and replaced with other figures... Like the Undead Lenny I'm working on next.

Looks brilliant, looking forward to having a go at mine.

I still can't post any of my own work because PB won't let me...!

I'm still bitter with PB since they killed the multiple-photo download, so I can't even rescue my old photos from their shitty service. "We're not holding anyone's photos hostage."

Just finished Undead Lemmy from Diehard Miniatures. Difficult miniatuere to photograph since I mostly painted him with a variety (hues?) of black.

And here he is with And here he is in the magnetized spot with the dragon. I'll need to come up with a name for the dragon... likely lift one from a song lyric of title! (Not a great photo either, got a mix of light temperatures and couldn't correct it in my photo app...)

I should be pretty much done with my Hill Giant project tomorrow (or Jan 1st at latest)... I think painting the giants was at most 1/3 of the work in this project, but I also think the effort to make the display board has been worth it. Possibly the best thing I've ever made?  :icon_eek:

Progress has been made towards my entry into the ‘Legion of Legend’ painting competition – I haven’t finished the Unit this month but I have built 20 figures that may or may not become part of the entry and painted half of them so I’m happy with the result.

There are two deadlines for entries in January, a unit (by the 11th) and a leader (by the 25th) which are my targets for January.    These should be finished soon which will give more time for the two deadlines in February.

Didn't finish the fire warriors nor the firesight marksman, but finished my T'au Sept Riptide! with all the highlights and that is the reason it took so long and the rest wasn't finished.

Another month where I didn't get any painting done. I did build stuff though! Converted up 13 Death Watch marines, including a Captain and Termy librarian. Plus I also build the new AoS Gotrek and the special Christmas edition of the White Dwarf as a tech priest.
