From what we've seen in the lore so far theres a great deal more diversity. Instead of a couple of factions that are all based on one historical group each (Holy Roman Empire, Arthurian Knights, Russians, etc) each realm is somewhat tied together in colour and theme, but otherwise wide open. The realm of death has wizened, enlightened scholars and undead worshipping nutters each with their own realm.

My guess will be that the bulk of the "Free People" forces will have somewhat of an Empire theme and in lore be based on the culture of Azerheim. Afterall, that's where Sigmar lives and rules so I bet we'd see some of the looks carry over.

The White Dwarf's have actually been running a series looking at each realm and how to convert/paint your models to fit in. Some of the more in depth articles also get into the inhabitants of those realms. It's been pretty good.

I'm going to try out a list at the Eurobash, eager to see how that will play!

Cities of Sigmar ... surely you mean like Altdorf, Averheim, Hergig, Middenheim, Nuln, Salzemund, Talabheim, Waldenhof, Wolfenburg, and Wurtbad.

(GP ... what about Marienburg?)

Oh, right ... Marienburg.

This is a good article on playing Cities of Sigmar in Age of Sigmar, and how to build an army of mortals fighting the good fight instead of just Stormcast.

Indeed. I never thought about militia company subbing for scourge privateers.

The guy is trying hard.  I got a kick out of this line ... "This means gaps, mold lines, and some softer detail on a number of the models."  And the caption under the halfings is a classic ... "Lumpin Croop’s Fighting Cocks. These are uhhhhh Freeguild Crossbowmen now, yeah!".  And not sure what to mak eof them calling the wood elves a "green party", plus dark elves being placed in with the forces of "order".  Hmmm ... then again in AD&D if I recall Drizzt was lawful evil.

Just saw that Cities of Sigmar is out.  How'd I miss that? :icon_lol:

Does anyone have it yet? If so, is it mostly a fluff book worth reading? Although I am imagining there are ideas perhaps even rules for the faction.

The Cities of Sigmar Battletome expands on the Free Cities established in the Season of War worldwide campaign + fleshed out in the (honestly really solid) Firestorm map-campaign-in-a-box supplement. It's also the only battletome I've purchased a Limited Edition of, and it's... kinda worth it. The cover art is purdy + the bookmark ribbon is surprisingly handy; I've considered gluing them into all my normal Battletomes now.

After listening to the designer's commentary on the Warhammer TV Twitch stream, they made a conscious decision to focus on the Firestorm cities instead of a more generic, design-your-own approach. I'm kinda bummed about that, but after the neglect Free People received for so long, anything is better than nothing. Currently, the only major Free Cities are in the realms of Ghyran (life) and Aqshy (fire), (Excelsis in Ghur aka beasts from multiple Black Library novels, is absent).

I happened to be kicking off a Path to Glory campaign shortly after the Battletome dropped, and since an all-Steam Tank army is viable now, I decided to start an army based on an industry mogul in the Ghyranic city of Graywater Fastness using defense contracts to fund his own private army...

Ricki Smith has also done some very interesting work in a similar vein with his Midnight City project by working from "what would happen if the old Empire clockwork horse aesthetic was dialed up to 11"...

So yeah, definitely excited to get back to painting my Lavender Hill Mob union-buster boys now that Animosity is over and I can actually hobby again.

I remember seeing a mock recruiting poster years ago for a DaVinci esque armed force. Those conversions remind me of that

Not thrilled with the punk steam look.  It reminds me of late 1800s early 1900s steam punk, and if thats what I wanted to play then would.  But such seems to be the way of W:AoS these days, the wackier the better, yet not for me.

Yeah, there's definitely a strong DaVinci vibe to all of Ricki Smith's conversions. He made an entire homebrew Battletome for his "Empires of Industry" models, because Narrative At All Costs and Rule of Cool.

Aye @GamesPoet, I believe that's what he was going for. If nothing else, I appreciate the sheer creativity of the kitbashes; it's fun just to look them over and see how he incorporated different bitz. His current project is the "Thieves' Bazaar", aka Skaven dressed as Lumineth...

Also! Next month's White Dwarf will have Warcry cards for Cities of Sigmar. I'm especially pleased about this, as my 40-strong, ad-hoc Greywater Fastness militia will allow me to field 2 or 3 of every single unit type. Since they took militia weapons out of the Freeguild Guard warscroll, I run them in AOS as Corsairs to represent their mixture of sword and board, halberds, axes, greatswords, bows, crossbows, handguns, blunderbusses...
