SO I want to start an Army of the Imperium. I love troops, uniforms, and artillery ( yeah I'm an empire player haha) what do you think for a guy like me ( I've never really played 40k) what I would need to do to start?
1- Tanks are ok
2- Squads rock
3- Smaller vehicles are cool
I want to do a version of the British Desert Rats WWII Africa Corps.
-
Love the theme. I'd suggest starting with the Start Collecting box myself. You get a tank, a squad, a heavy weapon and a Commissar. At the very least it gives you a nice little force with a bit of most things. You can test out paint schemes, get use to it, whatever. The book is also probably pretty important.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Start-Collecting-Astra-Militarum-2017
I'm not very competitive, so I tend to buy what I like the look of. I'm also more into my armies fluff, so I try to base my things on WWII Canadians. Similar organisation, etc. Combined with my disinterest in painting large models I primarily focus on squads, with support squads of heavy and special weapons. I seem to be pretty viable in games without a problem.
-
For a guard army the bottom line has got to be ‘how much do you want to spend?’ Cause you can have a fabulous army but it’ll cost. The best models come from mad robot or anvil. With you in US best off with mad robot. Gw vehicles are the way to go. You only want hellhounds and leman russ’ anyway. Sentinels are okay. Artillery tanks are okay.
-
Wow thanks guys for the information.
Gankom I'm like you I have a theme and I could less how its preforms.
What if I go man heavy can I win a few games? maybe a few smaller vehicles ( that four small tracked vehicle is awesome) whatever its called? Im also thinking about using the Oarlocks from Necromunda as my troops just is desert uniforms? To me they have that sandy look lol .. googls, strips of cloth etc. Maybe a few head swaps. WOULD love to get my hands of the Arbian towel wrapped heads if they were in platic?
-
WOW those starting off deals $$ for a basic kit not too bad!! :::cheers:::
-
I've picked up some Orlock guys as well to use as veterans for one of my platoons. (I have things semi organized so that fluff wise there's 5 squads of troops, 1 squad of veterans, and an HQ squad in a platoon.)
I haven't used the Taurox (I assume that's the tracked vehicle you mean) but I have used a couple of chimera's as light tanks in a wolf pack kinda tactic. A couple of light tanks working together to hunt stuff on one flank.
I'm primarily man heavy. I'd say mix in a few heavy weapon squads and anti armor weapons to keep yourself covered and you should be pretty good. That said, I do bring at least 1 Russ each game and it is almost always incredibly helpful. Even if it's not killing stuff fully, it's one of the main things stripping wounds off bigger stuff.
I'm interested to see what you other 40k players say. I know I really don't use as many vehicles as some of you, but I wouldn't be surprised if you guys have far better results then me.
-
Good to see your going for a Guard army, Zak. :::cheers:::
Gankom ... does your Leman Russ also draw fire away from the soldier heavy force?

thanks man im looking forward to it ..sense that all that people are playing and I miss me nerds
-

Gankom ... does your Leman Russ also draw fire away from the soldier heavy force?
It absolutely does. In one of the early games (in 7th edition) it one shotted my buddies Land Raider turn one with a lucky shot. Since then he aims for it every game, even though it has done so very, very little in every other game.
I also like to hide behind it, like a true guardsman.
-
is there anyone ( companies ) that can do a desert scarf head Wraps ? I want to switch the Cadians heads for more Laurence of Arabia type heads
-
I believe you are looking for Tallarn Desert Raiders. Have to dig in the OOP boxes probably, but you can still find them. Lots of old fluff about them too if that fits with the rest of your force. I always felt Imperial Sentinel Walkers seemed to fit in with that army theme.
As usual, there's a small fanatical fan group out there with lots of conversions etc.

Yeah I seen those guys and I'm not really wanting that look ..just the normal Imperial Guard body with a scarf wrapped head!! lol

SO my concept is based on the dessert planet like Tatooine.
This planet is not even registered by the imperium register of planets. However, 10 years ago an Imperial Cruiser went off course due to faulty navigational information and intense radioactivity crashed landed. Killing 3rd of the men and 50% of the equipment damaged. Four of the 5 commissars and most leadership died as well, leaving Jr. Officers and Sergeants in charge. SO they started to set up a base of operations, motor pool, and fix what they could.
The interesting thing was they were shortly met by a scouting group of imperial rogue traders and other scallywags, black marketers, and bandits. This uncharted planet was secretly given to these folks (over a millennia ago) as a base of refuge, refueling, and exploration trading post. I think this information got lost??? The Main city is very exotic tech/ steam punk / wild west?? Lol
Sand storms can last for months at a time, solar radiation swarm all around the planet causing a disruption in all psychic navigational signals.
The ship is shot and no way will the Traders allow them to signal where they are for the fear of imperial meddling.
SO for some exotic goods, food, and fun the guardsman have been placed in charge of City and its surrounding security.
SO I want odd things as part of this guard army-
a- Squats ( I’ve seen them)
b- Beastmen unit
c- Hobbled together imperial vehicles
d- Fare out steam punk ish stuff.
-
I'm sold. I look forward to seeing what crazy contraption you can come up with.

"Don't ask if your dreams are crazy, ask if they are crazy enough."

I didn't get the kit, just the wheels and tracks separately. I didn't want all the other bits. They also do a four wheel kit
-
BRO you are so sexy to me right now!!! lol :::cheers:::
-
TMI.
And I don't mean the head and vehicle information.
-
The wheels do look so much better.
-
like i said, it's how much you're willing or prepared to spend on it.
-
like i said, it's how much you're willing or prepared to spend on it.
I like what I like we will see lol
-
So am I correct that an imperium army can have all things imperial in it? Like I can have a Knight etc.
-
Generally as long as things are in their own legal detachments, you get all the rules for them. If you mix and match your losing out on the faction rules like chapter tactics or regiments and stuff.
So you can have a patrol detachment of space marines, a battalion detachment of guard and a superheavy (lord of war? What's the big detachment called?) detachment of knights. All in the same army, and all getting their full special rules.

So is it best to stick to one type of army?
-
It's all about what you want to do my dude! I tend to play just Imperial Guard, but that's because I'm playing fairly small scale. My last big game had two big Imperial Guard detachments, both different regiments, a small space marine detachment, a small deathwatch detachment and an inquisitor.
I do know lots of Imperial players who take an imperial guard force as allies no matter what their main army is, because it's real easy to farm lots of Command Points for cheap with IG. So it's pretty competitive to take, say, a mostly marine army with a good sized force of IG for CP and backup.
Again me myself, I usually tend to stick to just Imperial Guard. Usually organised into a couple of different detachments to get a decent number of CP. Of course I don't have any of the nice big models like Knights that would make it more interesting to branch out.
-
Mono build armies are fun, but to be competitive you'll need to mix together a few different codex's. The most common options are:
1) Guard CP battalion. Basicially either two company commander or a company commander and Primaris psyker and 3 infantry squads, sometimes these have mortars in. Generally the Cadian doctrine, though Catachan is currently very popular. Cadian for shooting and Catachan for muscle. Other regiments are all viable.
1b) People also add in various this to this formation depending on points. Common add on's are HWT's with mortars, Bullgryns and Hellhounds.
2) Assassins, you can take one for -1CP as a Aux detachment or Three as a vanguard detachment for 0CPs. Culexus are good due to the way the psychic power smite works and for being hard to hit. Callidus and eversor next. They can infiltrate so good for grabbing objective. Also cheap in points
3) Super heavy with knight, ubiquitous ATM. Mostly Castallans and Arminger little knights
4) Smashguinius - 3 Blood angle captains with jump packs, thunderhammers and storm shield as a Supreme command detachment for +1CP or 2 with 3 units of scouts as a battalion for +5CP. scouts are really good for board control and screening due to their deployment option.
4b) this used to be 3 custodian shield captains on jet bikes as supreme command
Spacemarines, deathwatch, grey knights all have good units but overall not top tier. Dark angles are okay, black knights are good and they have good flyers and -1 to hit vehicles, along with good plasma weapons. Space wolves are new out but seem okay, a few combo's. Thunderwolf cavalry and wulfen are very good.
All of these are fairly competitive approach to list building. However, if you want a cool modelling project and a fluffy army you can take whatever you want and which ever models you like most. The list building is easy from there.
-
very interesting, im a fluffy guy ( not literally lol) but I do like to be somewhat competitive
-
So if you were me right now what would you build for a small force that can be fun to learn the rules? I love to model that's my love for GW games
-
Spacemarines, deathwatch, grey knights all have good units but overall not top tier.
Considering the first two are my most common allies when I build bigger lists, it explains a great deal about my issues on the competitive scene.
So if you were me right now what would you build for a small force that can be fun to learn the rules? I love to model that's my love for GW games
Absolutely would suggest the Start Collecting Kit. Gives you pretty much a patrol detachment to at least learn the rules. Lord-Commissar (Although I generally don't take one in larger battles), a tank, and a squad with heavy weapon. Enough to practice some painting, some modeling and get a feel for the rules by playing some small battles. From there you can expand with more squads, more vehicles that you like, and consider branching out into the other Imperial Faction you might like as allies.
Then I'd get the codex. Need the rules, need the stratagems, etc.
-
Rough riders? Im thinking about doing a unit of 10 w/ Australian ( hats whatever they are called) head swaps ??? what do you think about these guys

YES those heads !!!! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
-
I've heard good things about rough riders, but have never used them myself. One of the local guys runs a group with two melta guns I think, and combined with their flank move (Where they can set up on a table edge or something) and swears by them as tank hunter.

oh good, I like the concepts of them
-
They are good at cheaply filling out the fast attack choices for a brigade. 55pts I think for 5. With outflank they are good at objective grabbing and back field tiles. However they are quite big for LOS and very squishy. A pair of 34 pts melta guns really bumps the cost up for a bs4+ unit.

You've chosen the Guard, which immediately lands you bonus points! I'd go for the Death Korps of Krieg, Tallarn Desert Raiders or the Steel Legion. They're really flavorful and climactic.

I'm going with my own creation based off the English Troops in Africa WWII or WWI whatever. SO, I'm using the Candian bodies with a swapped desert wrapped heads from another company.

I just want you to know Zak, every time I check your thread here I start humming Frozen music to myself.
"Do you want to start an army?
Do you want to play outside?"

I’ve always enjoyed playing fantasy over 40k but the lore and background of 40k to me is far more facinating and compelling.

Your doing the God-Emperor's work there Zak. Welcome to the Guard.

Remember Rough Riders are still in the index, so you can still use them!
Good grief that’s good to know. Steve painted like 20 Atilians so I wanted to use them haha.
Ok I bought my first box set. I have a squad with a heavy weapon, commissar, and tank. I’ve ordered desert heads from mad robot? Or whatever they are called. I’m going with a ( as you can guess) a desert 🐫 theam. Lol if the rough riders work out I’m going to convert some riders mounted on camels ( yes Steveb had dozens of 28mm camels) haha
-
Truly SteveB had everything!
I think it all sounds awesome.
-
Wow just found Squats I’m going to have to use them as another squad lol
Man they are ugly in a cool way
-
This is what I have:
1- Command squad
3- Squads of troops
1- Heavy weapons crew (heavy bolter)
1- Leman Russ Tank (basic design)
1-Commissar
What should I look at now?
-
I ordered 30 bodies from mad robot or crazy robot whatever its called. They are desert themed so I'm going with my version of Tallerian
-
Reptilian Lords have amazing Tallarian style heads and bodies
I have to admit I'm really enjoying 40k

-
I'm going to make a merc army using IG rules but Necromunda figs, just ordered 2 boxes of Orlocks
-
I incorporated a few Escher models into my Imperial guard armies
-
That's been my plan for awhile. To use Orlocks and turn them into former miner turned guardsman veterans, Van Saar (and the new enforcers!) into either Inquisitorial Acolytes, or carapace armored veterans.
-

OH inquisitional acolytes!! perfect I wanted an excuse to buy them hahahaha :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

Anything can be an acolyte with a little work! I did in fact preorder the Enforcers box (Coming this Saturday), and plan to make it so I can use them as an enforcer gang when playing Necromunda, or as acolytes in a main game. They'll look sweet painted like squat and bodyguarding Eisenhorn up the board.

Nice!! I really like the figures. Unfortunately they did not go with anything I am currently working on. I was thinking I wanted to eventually get an inquisitor going and they will make great body guards.

just converted 5 of the genstealer cult Bikes into Guard outrider ... such a fun conversion.
