So, I never had one of these before.
I used to just post the odd thread here and there whenever I could be bother taking so photos, hosting them, and writing up a post.
But I thought, I do a bunch of various other bits and pieces nowadays, and with a son, and daughter on the way, the amount of time I will have is only going to get less, so might as well contribute more about the less that I am doing...
Where to start?
Such a good question, and.... well I don't know
But here goes!
-
Well, I guess first, I thought I would put in some shameless plugs to some of my older topics I posted:
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,14837.0.html (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,14837.0.html)
An old post where I tried to photograph everything I had.
I have a lot more than that now.
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,25591.0.html (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,25591.0.html)
My Hochland army. I think I need to take some better pictures of these guys, and some more group shots.
And some pics of finished stuff - like my converted Demi-gryphs.
Just noticed I haven't posted anything in there since 2012. And even further back, that I started it in 2006! That's depressing.
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,51698.0.html (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,51698.0.html)
Most recently, the army I gifted a friend (and also to clear out space)
-
I always loved Hochland colors - my boss when I worked at GW had a Hochland army. Just great colors. Your armies look great - wonderful stuff!
-
Quite a few years ago now, when Dogs of War were still a thing, I was going to write a bunch of articles about how you can kitbash any unit with the existing plastics range.
Most were simple.
For example, here is a smaller calibre cannon, by cutting off some of the length of the normal cannon, wheel swap, and using the mortar struts:
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/Cannon.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/Cannon.jpg.html)
A Paymaster (or Empire Merchant) using the fat Bret body and some bits.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/Paymaster1.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/Paymaster1.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/Paymaster2.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/Paymaster2.jpg.html)
Ruglud's armoured orcs - just with the 6th ed archer bodies, arm swaps and a 7th ed Empire crossbow (they are bigger scale).
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/RugludOrc1.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/RugludOrc1.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/RugludOrc2.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/RugludOrc2.jpg.html)
Slayer Pirates - just hand swaps with pistols. Could easily be painted with red beards
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/LongDrongsSlayerPirates.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/LongDrongsSlayerPirates.jpg.html)
Ghazak Khan, mainly with a wicker shield cut up to use as armour pieces.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/GhazakKhan1.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/GhazakKhan1.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/GhazakKhan3.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/GhazakKhan3.jpg.html)
Dark Emmissary from a corpse cart rider, and various other bits.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/DarkEmissary1.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/DarkEmissary1.jpg.html)
There were a bunch of other things I made, but I don't think I have photos of them handy.
The Galloper Gun kitbash I really liked - may take a photo of it someday.
-
wow very cool work dude
-
I vaguely recall seeing your Hochland figures years ago, and it is good to see them again. Enjoying your conversions shown in this thread, too!
:icon_cool: :::cheers::: :eusa_clap:
-
I want to see those conversions painted up, you can also do more and show them, they are very inspiring and get the creative juices flowing. steveb
-
Thanks guys.
Yeah, the Hochlanders needs some attention to get finished. I really want 10 Marksmen of Miragliano to finish them...
I will get around to painting these kitbashes as some point. So much to paint though!
Anyway, here is the Galloper Gun kitbash I was talking about. Mainly used bits from the Helstorm kit - and the gun tube is from a dwarf organ gun.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1953.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1953.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1954.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1954.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1955.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1955.jpg.html)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1956.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1956.jpg.html)
Then here is a VERY simple kitbash for a paymaster's cart, using the long board piece from the Helstorm kit, some chain, and the dwarf treasure cart from the 7th ed starter box.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1957.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1957.jpg.html)
Here it is with the paymaster from before:
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1958.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1958.jpg.html)
Lastly here were some simple 'Birdmen of Catrazza' or 'Gargoyles of Barda inspired' replacements....
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1966.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/DoW%20Blog/IMG_1966.jpg.html)
Ungors with the 40k Tyranid Gargoyle wings, and goblin archer arms.

Looking good! Very creative.

I love the galloper gun conversion! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

I love the galloper gun conversion!
Me too. Simple and effective - my favorite type of conversion.

+1
Overall very satisfying modelling. :-)

The Gargoyles of Barda are an often overlooked Dogs of War unit. They are tough and they can fly. I cannot wait to see yours painted up. steveb
-
Thanks guys. I thought you would like the kitbashed galloper.
And yeah, I agree Steve, the Gargoyles are often overlooked. I am sure I will paint these guys one day.
At the moment, I am more trying to focus on assembling to reduce space, and then will come around to painting another day..... that said, I am more interested in painting than assembling at the moment, so lets see what I end up painting....
In the meantime, I thought I would share my scratch built / converted / kitbashed Coven Throne / Mortis Engine, because I never really liked the new massive ones...
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/Undead/IMG_1944.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/Undead/IMG_1944.jpg.html)

Now for a Coven Throne, just add lahmian vampires...
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/Undead/IMG_1948.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/Undead/IMG_1948.jpg.html)

And for a Mortis Engine, I had an 'Arc' type thing from a miniature I picked up a while back. I figure I put that on there, and a Necromancer, and away we go!
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/Undead/IMG_1951.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/Undead/IMG_1951.jpg.html)
-
Very nice bunch of conversions, particularly the last one. Still considering how to DIY a Mortis Engine so good to see new ideas.
-
Great conversions - the galloper guns were some of the first models my friend bought (and so some of the first models I've ever seen) all those years ago. I really like your take on them - using the Organ Gun bits was very clever! I also used that fat Bret body for a conversion, there's just not enough fat people in warhammer :biggriin:
-
Fantastic conversations! I really like the multiuse mortis/coven throne. The mini arc piece in particular looks good.
The Lahmian vamps are just daemonettes aren't they?
-
Nice. Where do you get your thin plastic wheels? I particularly like the galloper gun.
-

Thanks. Yeah, I know its not especially fancy. But I hate the size of the GW models - so huge. I had some of those bits from the 40k terrain, and really wanted to do something with them. I On the back, I have an Empire banner hanging, and towards the bottom I used one of those skull pieces from the Arcane Ruins.
Its not pictured well, but I put a flagellant with 2 bells in between the horses, to represent the banshee effect that one (or both) of the enchanted chariots has.

Thanks! Yeah, all the other barrels were too big for what is supposed to be a small calibre mobile field gun. I haven't assembled whats left of the Organ gun yet though.... ::heretic::
-
The Lahmian vamps are just daemonettes aren't they?
Correct. With a breastpiece added to the other side, and high elf archer legs. And Wood Elf hands or the empire militia gloved dagger hands.
I have a unit of 20 I made, as stand-in ghouls (I don't like the ghoul models)
Nice. Where do you get your thin plastic wheels? I particularly like the galloper gun.
Tomb King Chariots.
Thanks! Me too. Its great when a model just comes together how you want it to.

You can really tell with the newer models that they want to fit their monsters on chariot bases for playability, but keep running out of ground area and design them to be absurdly tall instead. Compare

@ Warlord: Excellent conversion! And very efficient too.
@ Patsy: Very true that. Which underpins GW's stated aim of being a model, not a gaming company.
-
@ Warlord: Excellent conversion! And very efficient too.
Thank you
@ Patsy - spot on. Their model for it is huge. I only like having 1 or 2 huge models in an army, and I already bought the Terrorgheist.
In the mean time, I have started some work on these guys... been sitting in my to do pile for a while.
Any guesses what they will be?
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/WiP/IMG_3885.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/WiP/IMG_3885.jpg.html)
Maybe to go with this one in the same army...
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/WiP/IMG_1962.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/WiP/IMG_1962.jpg.html)
-
No guesses? No heroes 3 fans out there?
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/WiP/IMG_1963.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/WiP/IMG_1963.jpg.html)
Some Gremlins and a Naga. Based on these guys:
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/Warlord_011/WiP/Heroes%203%20Tower%20creatures.jpg) (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/Warlord_011/media/WiP/Heroes%203%20Tower%20creatures.jpg.html)
I may use those Gargoyles too. I have a plan for Magi. I have an inkling for something for Golems, and I have 3 Genies for an Araby army I was going to make.... I will need something for a Titan....
-
OMG! The nags! Awesome. I loved this game and I completely drew a blank. This screenshot brings back pleasant memories.
-
Used to play that computer game with family. Great fun, however every other army picked on the Gremlins first. :-(
Titan, maybe 54mm ancient figure. Also try Reaper plastic for Genie and Nags. That's if you want to use non GW figures.
Any special rules for Gremlins ?
-
Rule wise, i have no idea, and for this project I don't care. I will figure that out later!
-
No guesses? No heroes 3 fans out there?
Heroes Chronicles "Clash of the Dragons" was the first video game I bought. Got me hooked on HoMM. Heroes 3 is still my favourite, and my preferred faction was/still is Tower.
-
my preferred faction was/still is Tower.
Mine too, hence this project. I always took fafnir or solymr if i could, but always wondered how a hero who specialized in genies or magi would fair, because mine always died too soon, but my nagas were solid, and i usually sent them against whatever seemed most powerful on the other side.
-
Well, anyway, about 5 years ago, I bought a bits box on eBay for $50.
In that box, also came a bunch of beautifully painted Empire miniatures. I never took photos of them before, but thought I should try now.
Or at least in person they look great. Not sure the photo's do them justice.
Whoever painted them did a great job.
First up is the infantry.

Those are the type of halbediers and swordsman I have as well. The very end of 5th was when I came in. Had jandgunnners rather than crossbows. They look pretty good!
-
I like 'em! :icon_biggrin:
-
There is a lot of wok and patience here, painting their eyes!
-
Next up is the cavalry and characters. Some of these were painted to a quality I haven't quite had the patience to reach yet - Rutgar's cloak is one such example...

Those Reiksguard knights are superbly painted!
For me, these 4th ed metals by the Perry brothers crystallize what the Empire is/was.
They're the first minis produced with an Empire army list in mind, right?
-Z
-
OH DUDE, I love these guys so retro the golden age of Warhammer and the empire !!!!
-
Excellent! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-

-Z
Yes as the fourth (well the minis and the proto-list came out late 3rd) set the current make up of Empire armies what with the very specific minis for certain Knightly Orders rather than generic entries which covered various levels of Empire Knights in the 3rd.

Here is the War Machines and crew:

Now the Steam Tank came with a card base, but it was showing serious age, so I used a Demi-Gryph sized base instead and flocked it with something I had in storage from that era.
There is a lot of wok and patience here, painting their eyes!
Tell me about it! When I paint eyes, they are a lot less effort (and look less good) than all of these.
Those are the type of halbediers and swordsman I have as well. The very end of 5th was when I came in. Had jandgunnners rather than crossbows. They look pretty good!

Thanks guys. I was pretty blessed to have bought them for so cheap. I don't think they knew what they were selling when they did.
Those Reiksguard knights are superbly painted!
For me, these 4th ed metals by the Perry brothers crystallize what the Empire is/was.
Agree. They were really well done. And I feel the same. The Battle for Blood Keep in White Dwarf (even though I think it was 3rd edition, the models were starting to approach this, and everything I looked at after up until 6th was like this. To actually own some, painted to such a standard is a priviledge.
-
this is 'red period' done tastefully. Not easy to pull off. And I agree, the sculpts from that era are as 'Empire' as it gets.
Also, good job on the 'retrobasing' for the the steam tank, fits right in.
-
A trip down memory lane there :)

Love it. Are they marienburgers?

Alright, last up is the Wizards and Halflings.
Thyrus Gorman came without his staff of Volans, so I just swapped the top in from one I had lying about from an old bits order when GW still did that.

Agree. The knights especially I think are beautifully done.
Also, good job on the 'retrobasing' for the the steam tank, fits right in.
Thanks! I recycled the decorations from the previous base, which I think helps.
A trip down memory lane there :)
It is nice having them in my cabinet to help me feel nostalgic every now and then.
Love it. Are they marienburgers?
What makes you say that? They are pretty much the stock standard Altdorf halberds....?
I didn't paint them. I guess they could be.
-
Looking at the celestial wizard, I may have to retake those photos...
-
 The famous Mushroom Company? (of the Stirland River Patrol?)

Marienburgers are red, yellow and blue.
-
Tell that to 023.
-
Marienburgers are red, yellow and blue.
They only have yellow feathers. Its not how i do my marienburgers - i do them multi-coloured.
Furthermore, I thought marienburgers had orange on them like the Dutch?
-
I thought halberds were in Altdorf colours as well. And some-one can paint better five pointed stars than I can.
-
 The famous Mushroom Company? (of the Stirland River Patrol?)

Hehe. Thats how they came. I liked the mushroom - perhaps its their standard bearer?
I thought halberds were in Altdorf colours as well. And some-one can paint better five pointed stars than I can.
Whoever it is i bought them off, yes. The stars look good in person. The decorations on the celestial wizards mount i am not so sold on, but going to leave as is. I have enough models of my own to paint first.
-
Man, so much classic goodness here! Love the single-pose halberiders, and the multipart swordsmen... both really good examples of their kind. :)
You have me wanting to head off and paint my huge pile of plastic spearmen with the lion-shield. Well, you have me excited about how cool they'd look to have them done . . . actually doing them is appealing. ;)
Great looking collection :::cheers:::
-

Oh, ok. I've always gone by the Mordheim colour scheme. Never seen them in orange, although it would be fitting.

Ok, so on the same topic of the 5th edition models, there was also some undead in the big box I bought, and some Bretonnians:

that should work out Mr. Ghost. We'll team up, mug warlord and take his models. You get the skellies and I'll take those beautiful Bretonnians. The heraldry is awesome. They look like straight from the box art.
-
It's like a time capsule, excellent stuff.

So I took some photos of the Gryphon Legion I bought from BAWTRM, due to them being previously owned by a friend of his...
I was at one point going to re-base them, but now have decided I won't touch them at all, and will leave them in the condition his friend painted them in.
I am sorry I have not shared these photos with the forum much earlier - it has perhaps been almost 10 years?

So much awesomeness here!
Somewhat sad that these lovely models pile up in collectors' cabinets. Or are you playing more games when you accumulate more models? :-D
Because I know I'm not.

very cool sir :::cheers:::

A fantastic vision

My main opponent lives in Brisbane now, so its primarily hobby for me, at least until my son is old enough.

Hey guys,
Been a while since I posted in this thread, thought I would revive it and post various stuff I have photos of, and hopefully encourage me to take more photos too...
Anyway, first up is a converted Dragon Ogre I made a while back (well, I actually made 8 of them, but this is the only one I have painted so far)...

Great use of different kits :::cheers:::
Good to see another post.
-
Great job on those custom D.O.W mini's. I discovered that a lot of O.O.P models can be made from current kits
-
So here are some of my more interesting WIP undead pieces:
Liche Priest

Mummies

Zombie Mortar (Screaming Skull Catapult)

Blood Dragon Knights

Mad Scientist

That liche priest is fantastic.
-
wow again nice work :::cheers:::
-
All of them are such cool conversions. Well done! :::cheers:::
-
Thanks guys.
Liche priest is High Elf plastic Mage and Tomb King bits. Pretty simple but really effective in my opinion.
The Blood Knights were really easy, because they just use old Chaos Knight horse heads and tails (and a few other bits and bobs) and the Dark Elf Cold One riders. I figure if I paint the faces as vampiric it will do the job well enough. And I am already using the Cold Ones for some marauder riders who had no mounts anyway, so easy swap.
-
More great stuff.
I once mad a mad scientist out of an Imperial guard commissar and a henchmen for him out of an orc archer
-
Wow, this is quite something! These look really high quality kitbashes, perfect pieces and perfect fitting make good poses. :)

Wow, these are some seriously cool looking conversions. You have a great imagination and a great ammount of skill.
-
So anyway, I took some photos of my painted undead... well some of it anyway - really can't be bothered to rank up 80 spear skeletons for a photo.... but here we go:
VAMPIRE COUNTS
Strigoi Vampires

I loved these guys back in 6th and 7th ed.

Skeletons

Bats and Spiders (I never liked the Bat Swarm or Fell Bat models, so used these LotR Bat Swarm and Spiders instead)

Animated statues

I don't like the Crypt Horror models, so use these instead....

Reall nice. I always like that grey shade of undead. I have 2 LotR bat models I’ve been trying to get rid of for months on eBay. If they don’t sell eventually I was going to use them in dragon rampart. Those skellies are fantastic with the round shields. And lastly that engineer model with the battle plan is great.

Great to see this thread ... rise from the dead, and with some undead no less! :icon_mrgreen:

Hi guys,
Been a while, but here is a simple converted Chaos Lord I made the other day:

I like it! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
I've accumulated some of the metal chaos figures, and hope to build a small army of them some day.
-
Very cool conversion. Innovative use of those skull emblems. :eusa_clap:

So in June I painted up some of my Heroes of M&M 3 'Tower' units.

I know the Gremlin skin tone is messy, and I don't feel happy with the Naga, but its something....
-
I discovered it was easier to place an extra weapon hand in the old chaos knight kits as the shield arms don't fit too well

Yep, exactly what I found above.
Annoying.
-
Nice idea! I love HoMM3 as well! Your 'Titans' look a bit underwhelming though. :-D
-
They are Golems, not Titans. Great idea, Warlord. The Tower was my favourite faction in HOMM3 - indeed, still is, since I still play it from time to time.
-
Wonderful! I loved HoMM 3, and often thought of doing something like this!

Mea culpa. :engel: The armour/clothing confused me.
-
Both the Golems and the Titans had a "classical" appearance, but the cingulum (the belt decorated with metal fittings) was specific to the Stone Golems. And, of course, the mud colour (in combination with the metal colour of the one Iron Golem) should have been a give-away. That said, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis.
