Painting and modeling the wissenlander way
« on: January 21, 2010, 01:29:29 AM »
This thread has been a 'long' time coming.  Feeling a sense of obligation to do something for my own army and inspired, albeit briefly, by our trip to visit the English that now reside in North Carolina, I had garnered the will to paint!  Well, in two days I painted up this fellow (sorry for the poor pictures), which shows that I do have it in me.  Just not very often.

These models are the first in which I tried layering (to a certain degree) and dry brushing.  I even used some of the new inks to try to help with the shading.  I hope it worked out.  I was pleased with the results, though I know I've still got a ways to go.  Being patient helped out a lot, though.

And one of him with unpainted hero:

Soon after I went and painted up the scouting captain that I had constructed for the Crisis in Marienburg campaign.  He doubles as a marksman for my warband in Mordheim.  Well, that's all he can really do at the moment...

And that was about it for a couple of months.  But, this fellow I just put together tonight.  I always wanted a special model to represent him, but I finally got all the bits and bobs (read slowly here Shadowwolf  ) to finish him up.  I plan on adding a cloak from the knight set after I've painted him.

Sebastian Drauwulf

I wanted to avoid a static pose, but I'm not that great with green stuff to make him look more dynamic.  I think this pose is good though.  The kitbash with the sword worked out better than I had hoped, but it isn't totally straight.  I actually had to make a notch in the back of his hat to fit the sword in, too.  Not too much work all in all.  Hopefully I'll be able to paint him relatively soonish as I don't want to get too back logged again.

Now, with any luck I'll be able to update this every now and again when I finish these up and start up some of my other loose end projects.

Comments and criticism are welcome

Woot!

Drybrushing and the new(ish) washes seem to go quite well together, as the wash helps hide some of the harshness of a good, stiff drybrushing while keeping that sort of gritty feel, it seems.

The only nitpick I have with the scout is that he seems a mite, erm... glossy.
That's pretty easy to fix with an airbrush and some Model Masters Clear Flat, (and I'm going to be doing that to all the rest of your doods, in fact), but if you want to dish out the money for a can of it, GW clear flat works too. Just, um, feed it cookies or something or else it'll spaz out and cover your models in a white mist. It totally destroyed Malky's new wraithlord...

Also, Sebastion is seriously badass. No, really, he is. He exudes "You want some of this, bitch?". I love 'im :)

(And where did you get all these bloody militia greatsword bitz? )

Hey, that's a very cool conversion idea! :eusa_clap: I was thinking exactly the same thing as Zandur.

The archer is a bit glossy, but he's not so bad in person.  I went over him with the gloss varnish stuff to make him 'rock solid.'  The flash on the camera probably didn't help the cause any.

I'm glad you guys like Sebastian.  That's the feel I was going for.  The big hat is a little over the top, but it was the closest thing I had to fit his face and it will help him stand out.

I just got another militia box for Christmas, so I had 4 greatsword arms to play around with.  I only had to mutilate one, fortunately. :biggriin:  I don't really remember where I got all of the greatsword arms before.  I only remember buying one other militia box...

No need. 'Dynamic' poses tend to look odd when joining units anyway.

This is a joy to see.

Liking the dark pegasus from what i can see and the hero looks like he'll be nifty too. Good head choice.

Sebastian is as mentioned, one scary dude. I hope (partially) that he lives up to this new-found reputation.

Love the pegasus. I wish there were bigger pictures!

Really like the lancearm -> greatsword conversion too.
Simple idea, but looks awesome.

Thanks, guys!

If I get a chance tonight I might be able to get a bigger picture of the pegasus.  Just need to re-upload the image and resize it.

To my embarassment, when I saw the title I supposed I was going to find pictures of loads of grey plastic, with the demand for volunteer painters..

Still, you're the only one who pulled that off...

Yeah, that was my established way I suppose.  I still don't really know how it all happened, it just sort of came together.  And just remember, Soth, you started it. :-P  So, thanks again!
