Flaggelant Help
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:29:01 PM »
So I have been playing and painting Empire for over 10 years, but I have never done Flaggelants and I need a lot of help.

After doing all the other Empire troops I am so used to painting uniforms in bright colors that I don't even know where to begin with my Flaggelants. Keep in mind I use a white base coat for everything. Here are a few questions I have...

1. What colors should I use? Obviously I want to make them varied as they are supposed to be a "mob."
2. General painting advice on the Flaggelant models?
3. If you painted Flaggelants before did you use any techniques that worked really well?

I gotta get through 30 of them so any and all advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

I haven't painted Flaggies, but I painted some militia-types which were sort of "peasant mob". I sprayed them white, and then washed the whole model with a dark mix of brown ink, brown paint and water. It was almost a wash, and gave instant shadow and coloring. Then, I was able to use various browns as a drybrush to bring out different pieces of clothing. It was really very quick. Once the browns were done, I did a little bit of detailing with a boltgun / black mix and some reds and flesh. Job done.

i appreciate that, but all my other stuff is fully painted so I can't really just completely wash the Flaggies. I don't think that would look right.

i've finished 30 crazies in my blog,

i also used a brown technique for maybe 10 of them, but then went for some crazy colours like pinks, and light blues,

Ask yourself , what is real? 5 sense filtered reality is a very limited perspective.

Hmmm.... I felt exactly the same with mine, they were one of the last units to get painted for the very same conundrum.

I personally went for a contrast with my state troops - (middenland, being mostly blue) so went for red (apologies for the cr@ppy pic)

mine too had a white undercoat, so after bright colours an overall wash with brown ink (devlan mud these days) and highlight up a bit makes for a bold unit.  does depend on the rest of your state troops though, and I wasn't a fan of a brown/"beige" mob.  maybe white with blood splatters?  also depends on the vintage of your models.

I also went for red, as it matches one of the State Colors I am using currently. I think Red is an excellent choice, as it makes them stand out a little more than brown... which is traditional.

Red is a good idea there. I have also though of that for my Flagellants which are coming up next. However I think I will go for a mixed colour schene with red being the dominant colour.
Hobbits are stupid, Talabecs are thieves and Averlanders reek of horse shit.

Thanks guys!

I think I am going to go about 80% brown and beige but also add in a few red and purples (purple being for the prophet of doom).

However, I have never painted in beige before so any advice? What colors would you use? Also has anyone done the "Blood splattered" effect before and how did you do it?

Also, the devlan mud idea for all the colors is excellent advice.

If you want to do blood splatter, there is no better way in my opinion than getting a pot of Tamiya Clear Red.  On its own you can make very nice convincing fresh slippery gore, or blood droplets etc. With the addition of some brown, and black paint, and maybe some smoke or brown/black inks you can make great dried blood effects as well.

Its also great for glazing gems over a greyscale shading with white highlight.  :icon_idea:

Some places I've used it:

I even used it here on unprimed raw metal to make metallic red armor for dracula:

Its seriously good stuff to have... everyone should have a pot. ;)

This is the one you want:

It was a limited edition release from Artizan Designs I believe (Might have been Crusader, I forget)... It was packaged free with the rulebook when WAB Vlad the Impaler came out.  I use it for my undead general. :)

Though they were a limited release, they are not insanely collectible that I'm aware of. I often see them on ebay for pretty reasonable money. Keep your eyes peeled.   :icon_wink:

disclaimer!!! My painting style and skill level is decidedly "table-top" and quick.  I hate playing with something that's not painted and I cannot stand having miniatures laying around unpainted for long periods of time.  The advice and pics you get from most other people here are probably going to yield better if slower results.

1. What colors should I use? Obviously I want to make them varied as they are supposed to be a "mob."

Everything!   :icon_lol:  Use lots of browns mixed with occasional color.  I painted mine almost entirely with just bestial brown, kemri brown, and vermin brown.  Throw in the odd red, green, or blue piece of clothing.  Throw your desired skin tone on and voila!  Wash everything with Devlan Mud to give it that dirty appearance, only thing left is to do the metal bits.  Works really well and its quick!

2. General painting advice on the Flaggelant models?

Balancing making them look like a mob and just making them look.... blah is the tough part.  Try to find 2 or 3 colors that will unify the unit in some way.  Using a wash can help since it will shade the colors to about the same level, reducing the contrast of colors you usually wouldn't put together.

3. If you painted Flaggelants before did you use any techniques that worked really well?

The trick to washing so many different colors like beige, greens, purple, skin, and dark browns with devlan mud is to control the wash and water it down to different levels as you apply it.  On the beige areas you will want to be careful about where the wash runs and you will probably water it down quite a bit.  I think most people think of using a wash as literally giving your miniature a bath in the stuff, which is not usually ideal.  Applying a wash well takes some patience and technique, like everything else about painting tiny little people!

I've painted 60 of the buggers so I'll tell you my method.

I went with mostly toned down colors for my flaggies to give them a grim look in contrast to my blue and yellow Nordlander state troops; I stuck with this palette to kind of give the unit a unified feel.

For the flesh, i painted them using Tallern Flesh and then I washed it with Ogryn Flesh, went back over the raised areas with Tallern then highlighted with Dwarf Flesh and extreme highlight using Elf Flesh.

I actually used the GW foundation colors a lot on their robes and washed the cloth with Devlan Mud and sometimes Ogryn Flesh. This gives them a nice grubby look and was kind of a speed way of getting shading into the folds -- you'll notice I sometimes went heavy on the wash towards the bottom to give it a dirty appearance as if these fellows have been tramping about from town to town, dragging their robes through the dirt, not really giving a toss about their hygiene or appearance.  I used the browns and greys and Denab Stone, which you might think would be too light, but once you hit it with Devlan Mud, it was quite a nice effect.  I used Mechrite Red as well. If you don't want them look too monotone, I'd suggest painting a fair amount of them two tone -- the skirt one color and their top another -- or i'd paint the sleeves a different color.  But find color combos that work well together.

I'm at work right now, but I'll try to post a pic when I get home though my camera sucks. I still need to adds hightlights, and I want to add a wood grain effect on some of the models, but I had to finish up other units first, so that will hopefully be soon, but they look pretty good right now.

Here's some of them up close (sorry my phone camera is all i have for the moment) - I noticed some mold lines that escaped

Most of this stuff needs highlighting, but I just wanted to get them to the table top at the time -- finishing them up will be one of my next big projects.

These ones have mostly a base coat and simply a wash for the moment - might add highlights later.

"Inside out" - fire is brighter in the center and darker towards the edges. I like to paint yellow over a white undercoat, then then either drybrush or layer on successive "highdarks" of orange and then red.

I went for color in mine. I was really tired of blue and yellow and the flaggies allow you to go for color. So a few browns, but also yellow, red green grey and one purple. They bring character to the table so I like them to reflect this.

I also did my flame white, through orange to red.

However, one final question...

Fire... whats the best way to paint it? Thanks!

Not merely "inside out", (which is a quicker method, and by no means incorrect, just not as "realistic")

Here is a good tutorial on painting fire on minis...
