I agree with what Delthos is saying and I think Blue proved the point.

Having said that, I prefer white myself. I use a lot of washes. Also, a model undercoated white is more inviting, it feels classic and nice. (A purely subjective remark, of course.)

Anyway, good work as always, Chumley. I like the wizwagon a lot. Xbows do seem a bit dull compared to your normal results though.

From one of the older How to Paint guides

Quote
Black is often used by people who want good results relatively quickly and , as such, is ideally suited to painting a large number of models at one go. The chief advantage of a black undercoat is that the deepest recesses can be left black to provide the darkest level of shading - this gives a very pleasing look without a great deal of effort. However some colours don't paint well over black, and all colours will tend to look less bright, which means it is sometimes necessary to repaint selected areas white and then apply your chosen colour.....think of black undercoats as best for mass painting and for painting models that are going to end up very dark or black, such as Dark Angels or Black Templar Space marines.

I prefer to paint onto white as I find it easier to paint lighter colours, such as yellow or white, without too much effort and use washes for shading and depth. However I'm not a great painter, I just use what I find easiest to paint onto  :::cheers:::

 :::cheers::: thanks guys.

An alternative that I think someone here suggested onece was to prime white and then wash with black...therefore filling in the dark recesses with black but leaving a brighter undercoat for the rest of the model...seems logical to me though I haven't tried it myself.

Cheers,

Blue

''more inviting, it feels classic and nice.''

Agree 100% must be personal choice, but a black model looks dull to me, uninviting, and uninspiring ...

Even my Teutogen Guard with Black Armour were undercoated White first.

Black is like a reverse paint job, start with dark shades and work lighter,

With White it's all base coats , then wash for dark depth and contrast , then highlight,

I need to experiment by giving myself a character to paint from black ,

i don't own chaos black spray though, LOL

Exactly. If you start with a white prime, you need to be very precise about laying down your base coats and managing overlaps. Otherwise, you get these odd white gaps between colors... so black has the advantage of not having to deal with that.

The one major disadvantage with a dark prime is that you've got to underlay white or a bright color (or use super-pigmented paints like the old Citadel Foundation paints) to get coverage that's worth a flip.

I'm never 100% precise and the white gaps you talk about get naturally filled by the layers of washes ,

Yep, as i learnt we paint inside out, start with the deepest inside you can see, out to the highlights.
Then make three times that. It should be enough for half the roof Glue
You could certainly amass quite a collection of testicles

FWIW I do my rank and file troops in black but characters in white

That said I prefer a darker, grittier look to me units anyway and rather than clean and crisp I want them to look dirty

Ok so I bought a model, and it arrived in the post from e bay...

Mine is the bald guy holding the helmet and sword on the right image in colour, highlighted Blue box.

Who incidentally is the same sculpt as the guy on the left , highlighted in Red, with one difference - he has longer hair!

it took me ages to get the colour image, and my sculpt is not listed in any main F Series listings

Don't underestimate how good the quality of these sculpts are,

I am convinced 1987 was the Golden Era for GW.

this model I have highlighted is top draw!

I'd generally agree with you mate

Figures so full of character and vitality it's fantastic
The figures from Lead Adventure remind me of them.

Love it...you are certainly feeling the vintage lead love...it is really hard to take the plastics of today seriously after working with the excellent classic figures from Citadel.

Two of these fighters...the guy with the top knot holding an axe and sword (center of the picture) and the two hand weapons in the bottom row were some of my very first citadel figures...bought new in the blister back in the day.  I wonder what ever happened to those guys???...  probably lost in my parents house somewhere!

Cheers,

I ike that "Freca Foulbreath" guy in the color photo...  He goes to battle with nothing more then the junk in his trunks.

Everytime you post something new it sends me rummaging through my boxes of old minis.  I've got one or two minitures in those pics that are slight variations such as the guy resting on his two handed axe. Mine has a sweatband and mullet different from those two showen.  Is there a complete photo listing of all barbarian or is it just a matter of flipping tediously through all the pages at Stuff of Legends?

Solegends has 5 photos i found, maybe more

GW listed Barbarians as fighters later , adding some of what were originally norse/viking into the barbarian category

Yeah, most of their stuff from back then might be closer to true 25mm. You'll probably hate me, chumley, but where you're out buying all the old citadel/marauder models I was previously on a mission to dump them all - too bad our paths didn't cross at an earlier time.

Some of them are more like 25 mm , but then obscurely you get certain ones which are big for 28mm, like the guy sid on holding the axe etc

The only time it's feasible imo, is where the model is 80%+ armour ....
