New outriders idea

Ive been thinking about outriders and what they could become in the next edition of the army book.  Part of this musing came from me building my first Steam tank and giving the commander a lance.  I am now trying to add some explosive to the lance, as all good engineers should.  This got me thinking of house rules for an explosive lance, then ideas for units that could carry them.  So I thought of a redesign of the outriders.

They keep their current stats but come armed with a single repeating pistol.  They then have to take at least one of the following:

Explosive lance
   Lance with armour piercing and killing blow
Repeating hand gun
   Same rules
Cavalry Carbine
   Range 18, S4, armour piercing

The unit champion gets the same options as the unit as well as:

Second Repeating pistol
Hochland long rifle
Grenade blunderbuss



In addition, repeating pistols get the same range boost as normal pistols.

This makes a unit that fulfills the idea of the pistolkorps trying out the new weapons of the engineers and gives you variety, without lots of different units (thus limiting you to just 3 in any combination).

Sounds like a great idea! I am wondering though- why would anyone take the cavalry carbine? Is that not just a repeating handgun with less shots (and range IIRC)?

I like the set-up of the idea, the function of the outriders. It also allows for some choices- giving them the lances would make them pretty hard hitters in CC, but a 5+ AS isn't great for knights. Etc. etc.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks for the quick reply, Obu.

The Cav Carbine is move and shoot, so you are trading number of shots and range for being able to redeploy and shoot in the same turn.

They will also cost different amount.

I also forgot to say the whole unit has to be armed identically (except for the champion).

Carbine should be the same as the repeating, or a point more. The lance should IMO cost two points more than the repeating.

I would like to see outriders with grenade lunchers! They could use the same rules as for the one the champion can choose but now the whole unit can take them.
A unit with HLR would also be cool but probably overpowered, you can just see how everyone will cry out CHEESE when you bring a unit of anti-wizard snipers.

I like the lance idea but would limit it to one unit only and obviously one use only, like the Imperial Guard Rough Riders hunting lance.

How about grenados as an option. Give the unit some sort of impact hit on the first round of CC but can only be used in the charge. Or they could be only used as a stand and shoot option giving a bonus to the unit as the chargers become a little more disorganised charging home.
