Now that's a nice surprise. ;) Thanks GamesPoet, altough this post was more fury-filled than most. Still, the current fanbase of the hobby is... lacking somewhat.

I have to say I enjoyed your post. I'm just getting into playing 40k, as you've been a big help with, but I've watched and read the fluff for a long time. I actually enjoyed the new book, and what I really thought of the Tau's pyrrhic victory. There was a thread on Warseer talking about it, and in between the rage and hate were some actually good posts. I liked one poster who was talking about how this campaign really shows the Tau just how big the Imperial force is. No matter how many the Tau kill, the imperials just keep coming. Even when they might lose they'll burn everything to the ground instead

That's what's great about the Damocles. Tau understood that the Imperium is huge and that it is willing to go to extreme lenghts to ensure victory. Meanwhile the Imperium finally understood that these upstart Xenos are no slouches in combat and actually warrant the Big E's attetntion. I mean, they've sent an entire Execution Force against them, a unit that was first used against the friggin' Horus himself!

It seems like ok story line.  Guess in a way it isn't surprising that some might be upset by it, yet its not like it destroys the whole world.  40K keeps plugging along, and I just saw another campaign event at one store with a strong following.

For 40K to continue successfully, suspect it needs continued story line to support the figure line and vice versa.

I'm surprised that people are upset that the Imperium lost a campaign. I thought it was common knowledge that they lose territory all the time against Chaos, Tyranids, Necrons, Eldar, Dark Eldar and all sorts of Xenos? Seriously, the Imperium is not good at keeping its shit together and that's part of the appeal of the dystopian future that has deep origins in irony.

I do agree that the fanbase has become much more annoying over the year. It's kinda like 13 year olds fighting over which music band validates their identity the most.

Something needs to happen, but it also must bring something new to the world of 40K i.e. not only center around Space Marines vs Chaos Space Marines. The fact that this campaign showed Xenos as a big threat, both in military and ideological terms, is great. There will be another campaign soon, centering around Tyranids and Astra Militarum and I hope that it will be as good as Damocles.

I'm for events that advances old and tired plot points, but I don't want them to do another End Times with their remaining IP.

Especially is we know that Chaos is gonna win from the start and nothing that anyone does matters.

Again, that was the weakest part in Fantasy and I hope they'll eventually get rid of that piece of (very old and outdated) fluff in 40K. Bad guys winning is not a godd story telling. Someone should tell GW about this.

Xath, I must demand that you call them Imperial Guard.

Currently I'm not all that interested about what happens in 40k fluff. I might get invested again if they go back to 40k being a cheeky setting that's big on irony.

I doubt that will happen. Just like they did with WFB, the GRIMDARK is too important for GW and they don't want to let go of it.

There are some things I dislike a good bit, yet nothing I dislike more than 40K whiners.  Especially when it is seems it so many Space Marine players who just fricking forget that it's what the fluff is that makes what they are, otherwise they wouldn't have the figures they do, and they need to grow up and realize that adapting their chapters to the story line gives them more of a reason to model and game.

Thanks for the link! :::cheers:::

That link seems to show thye have a novel and a campaign book, if I understand what I am seeing correctly.

Has anyone read the novel yet?

I've read a couple of the books in that series, and they were ok.  Evidently not spectacularly so or I'd recall the titles. :icon_lol:

Tau fit in with the irony that 40K fluff has provided previously.  They are suppose to be a force for good, just like the Space Marines and Imperial Guard, and yet they aren't as good as they have been made out to be.
