Oak's Miscellany(Bolt Action, LOTR, Horror, Ancients)
« on: November 16, 2019, 08:14:00 PM »
Wow, it's been awhile.

I figured I'd come back to the forum with the promise of WHFB being restored someday. I still have Empire, Beastmen, and Chaos Warrior armies - sold off everything else. Everything's going to get repainted in the next year, but in the meantime here's a sample of what I've been up to.

King Tiger, Bolt Action

US Infantry and Sherman, Bolt Action

Weird War II Project

Gondor for my FLGS' LOTR Battle Companies league(I wish I'd bought more of this range back when they were cheap on Ebay).

Near Future projects:
-Ptolemaic Egypt for Swordpoint
-Vikings and Moors for Saga
-Word Bearers, Dark Eldar, and Sisters of Battle for 40K Kill Team
-Chaos Warriors and Empire for WHFB

Starting a Mordor project. It's too humid to prime more guys though, sadly.

Woo, LotR orcs!  Mine have been hiding in storage cases for years, sadly.  I miss those guys.  And that game.

I like the icons on the shields - well done!

Thanks!

Probably GW's best ruleset. I wish I'd played it more in its heyday - but I'm glad its had a comeback recently.

Yeah, I also noticed, people are getting more interested in the Lotr game again. The Battle Company (the one with the big blocks), never really worked I think.
You have some nicely painted models around here, any more Bolt Action stuff?

Battle companies is the skirmish with XP tracking variant. War of the Ring was the mass-combat version and defintiely had balance issues. I didn't expect the game's relaunch to go so well. We had 14 people show up for our first league meeting.

And thanks! I'm not the happiest with my Bolt Action stuff since it was done 2-3 years ago when I was returning to The Hobby. I've got full armies for US Army and Wehrmacht.

That Sherman looks so tiny! Is it WLG's 1/56?

Yep.

The scale issues are a common cause of arguments in Bolt Action groups. The height is about right, and most WWII vehicles are smaller and more cramped than people would assume. But 28mm heroic guys are too chunky and wide to actually fit in 1/56 vehicles.

Looking at this photo, a man standing straight should be about as wide as the sherman's tank track. This doesn't look like the case.

Maybe it would work if the crew/infantry were 25mm realistic, like early GW LOTR models.

Or, alternately:

Tamiya 1/48 Sherman on the left looks way more appropriate next to the WLG infantry. WLG Sherman looks anorexic, like they didn't get the proportions right.

I found another, more complete comparison - including a realistically proportioned (though extremely lanky) Tamiya infantryman.

I've seen arguments for both scales. I guess for me it came down to wanting to match with my friends' tanks and have tougher/simpler kits for gaming instead of pressing 1/48 model kits into service. Especially once the Rubicon kits started dropping - those were a joy to build. The most jarring kits are probably the tiny ones like jeeps.

I try not to get too hung up on the exact scale thing, it's just gaming on a table top.  Close is usually good enough for me, yet I suppose it could depend on what you're going for with the game.  Then again I wouldn't use a 6mm scale Sherman with 28mm figures either, and not that anyone is suggesting that. :icon_wink:

Troll for Mordor finished. I got impatient and rushed the flesh tone and the highlighting on the armor, but overally I'm pretty happy.

I have plans for some more WWII horror. I'd definitely like do have an indoor laboratory, crumbling castle, some scientists, and maybe super-soldiers to join the zombie hordes.

It's not going to be super soon, but I'd like to do some colonial/revolution fun at some point. Some continentals, Indians, and redcoats with the option to add some supernatural stuff like a wendigo or headless horseman into the mix.

There is a Weird War version of Bolt Action called Konflikt 47.  I use homebrew rules for the zombies et al for a Halloween game I run each year. (Probably canceled this year because of the 'rona).

I haven't decided on a system for American Revolution yet. Maybe Muskets and Tomahawks.

I wander away and suddenly three years have gone by. Is this what middle-aged and elderly gentlemen meant when they talked about years flying by?

Battlemechs for a friend:

Gothmog and the Fellowship for LOTR(I've done full Minas Tirith and Mordor armies since I last posted).

Republican Romans(I really need to bulk up my ranks to get them ready for WAB/Hail Caesar/Swordpoint but it's been hard to find motivation lately):

And to stay vaguely on topic with WHFB, here's my Chaos BSB conversion.

But I also want to paint various other armies like my Talabeclanders as well. And Bretonnians! Maybe it would be easier to just list the WHFB I don't want at this point.
