70 years and counting, I always use bright lights from 2 or 3 angles, (day style light bulbs) natural light also when possible. I always wear reading/magnifying glasses, I have different strengths depending on how I am doing on that particular day.  arm/elbow/hand rests for steadyness.  good quality brushes that can load up with paint so that I do not have to shift vision back and forth dipping or load paint as often. and the real secret is eyes and all in the morning, details in the daytime, blocking colors in the evening, bases late at night. priming on the days when I fell crappy  or cannot focus.  I hope this helps,     steveb

There are folks that seem to have issues with magnification, and initially it took me some adjustment, but now can't do without it.

I agree with Steve B's assessment of when to paint what, not that I follow it. :icon_lol:

I've noticed that painting is better for me in the morning, ok in the afternoon, and it is much harder in the evening.  It seems like mostly mental tiredness, yet suspect that my eyes are physically less tired in the morning as well.

I echo your painting problems with regards to eye focus.  I have that problem too and am finding my painting to be somewhat crappy because of it lately (well crappier than it used to be anyway ).  I am trying magnification and lights...well the good white lighting I really cannot do without but magnification is causing problems with depth.  I cannot fathom the depth correctly and it is causing a mess  :|   It is good to know that these are common problems as one ages though.

I have been having similar problems for years.  This year the diagnosis was cataracts, so I can get an operation....

Thanks for all of the replies. Interesting reading everyone's experiences in aging in the hobby.

I still feel like I'm painting well enough. It's just requiring a change in habits. As far as the maginfiers, I gave up on them pretty quickly the few times I tried. I had problems reconciling my hand movements with what I was seeing and lost patience with it right away. I may give it another try someday, but at the moment my vision up-close is still pretty good. It just takes a minute to adjust, and I can no longer do it with my glasses (which are for seeing far) on like I used to. (Painting is not the only thing... I take my glasses off to read fine print, etc. now. as well.)

No painting updates, but...

Starting to write down more concrete info for my long term campaign project. Inspired after finally starting to paint up my Westfalia halfmen (and a painting & collecting a handful of other hobbity folk) I've taken my first shot at a hobbit-centric WFB3 list...

Garagehammer sounds wonderful, you need to do that just so I can be jealous of you!  :eusa_clap:

Jealous? I thought you're crashing my Year of Gaming in 2021. I'm going to hold you to that.

Well, sure, but I probably won't be there for the whole year! ;)

On the vision subject, my anglepoise lamp has a magnifier but I can't paint under it, either. Quite good to see things that I'm going to hate when I take photos...

More Althammer goodness there! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

I like that there are five factions!  Gives plenty of room for different layers of creativity.  I downloaded your halfmen list, more for reading then using it, yet who knows, and I'm liking your use of the word Althammer because it seems to be more encompassing than something like Oldhammer.

I've got some additions & changes I'm already planning on making to the list. Perhaps I was too hasty in posting it already. I just waned to see it all written (typed...) out so I could plan it out better. At any rate, v0.2 will be ready soon.

I've painted the first group of Westfalia halfmen for the Jackrabbit Trading Company (JTC.) These are the crossbowmen. I liked the idea of crossbows because it's a different take on halflings. It seemed to make sense, for some use, to me. Greater draw, range, power than bows or slings. Both of those will still have a place with scouts, rangers, militia, etc. But for the "professional" guard of the JTC, I'm going to use some crossbow troops.

If you look carefully, there is actually one with a handgun. I picked up some miscast figures from Westfalia, with the intention of using them for casualty markers. And I will. But I needed a few more figures for this group, and one of the supposed miscasts was a handgunner that I couldn't find any flaw on. So "Boomstick Bill" the hobbit joined the ranks. Bill's always got to do his own thing.

On that topic, I still wanted one more. So I picked a halberdier from the miscasts, reconstructed his helmet and side of his head (a couple of big bubbles in the casting) and then cut off the halberd and put together a standard. So once this guy is painted, he will join the above unit plus the first sample figure I received from Westfalia, giving me a unit of 16. Or two smaller units of 8. I regret not getting more crossbow hobbits, and if they become  available for general purchase, I would like a second batch.

Yesterday I received (another) package in the mail from Shadespyre. A small batch of the later Citadel armoured skeletons, to match the few I painted up in Deadcember. I knew they were on their way, so I also got hold of a sample pack of similar looking former Harlequin skeletons from Black Tree Design to see how they scaled up. In the photo below, there are three Citadel figures on the left, and three Black Tree figures on the right. Pretty close match!

This idea is so freakin cool it's amazing. The JTC is a brilliant idea.  This goes with your fluff about the escorted shipment and possible internment of its guards an so freakin on!!! Edit : Still patiently waiting for next instalment but understanding the load you bare.
Sorry, I get a little excited with these great concepts 😺

Haha. No problem. I'm glad anyone's interested at all. It's really a long term thing, and I need to catch up on painting & try to organize some games.

I finished the converted pennon/standard bearer for the crossbow unit. I would still like to add a badge to the banner, but have not made up my mind yet. I may plan that out for various units when I get further into the project.

A group shot, including the above figure and champion, the first sample figure from Westfalia. He's painted in different colors, but I will let that slide as a matter of personal choice by the Captain of the Crossbow.

Overall... great figures. Easy to paint & look great. Very happy with how they turned out, and I regret that I didn't get more. So at least one more unit this size is now on my wish list.

Surely the badge of the Jackrabbit Trading Company will include a rabbit? This army needs rabbits, lots of them. Uncountable rabbits... what's the word I'm looking for...?  :icon_wink:

Looking good. Was going to suggest that Broomstick Bill should be the unit champion, but you've got that covered. I like how he stands out - perhaps all your Heroes dress to their own tastes?

(Glad the skellies arrived ok, that's a good match.)

Will the purple and white be throughout these JRT units?

My first 5 halfmen sent as samples way back are being clothed in aqua blue/green, and some sort of yellow.  These guys are swordsmen, and not sure yet how they're going to fit into my halfmen plans, and at some point these guys might become mercenaries or be a unit under some sort of household name.  I'm struggling with what type yellow to use, and plan on having some sort of badge as well, the latter perhaps in black & white.

These halflings look very good, I'm wondering how they would fit in my Mordheim warband.

For what its worth, here's a comparison shot next to my usual scale reference. (I thought I someone had come up with a good name for him, but I can't remember.)

They seem a little smaller then the ones from White Knight and GW, or am I mistaken?

Also these don't have the fat bellies of the former. Honestly that was part of the appeal of the Westfalia figures. Look at the LotR & Hobbit movies -- convincing hobbits, without every single one having a fat gut. Not that Tolkien describes them that way anyway. It's not just the gut, but a lot of the miniatures manufacturers make them look like slobs, spilling out of their clothing. In terms real people, there are plenty of bigger people who dress well and look good -- not wearing clothing designed for much smaller people. I mean, if every hobbit in the WFB world (or wherever) is rotund, don't you think they would make their own clothing to take that into account?

At any rate...

I've had a lot of questions about how I paint rust. So here's my two bits...

Painted a couple more odd hobbits. I probably won't use the mounted guy for gaming, but wanted to re-paint him for nostalgia's sake.

And another ongoing hobbit comparison shot.

Left to right: Westfalia, Goblin Factory, Citadel, Ral Partha, Marauder, Effin Cool, and... ho ho, who do we have here on the right? Some upcoming figure(s) yet to be painted...? ;)

Since I've been painting short folk, I thought I would paint up my my favorite old goblin figure. I have/had a few others but I think they've all been traded off or given away. I'm keeping this guy -- it's my last one.

Minotaurs, painted for the same person for whom I previously painted a few beastmen. Although I loved the beastmen, I'm not terribly fond of these plastic minotaur figures.

Probably won't be painting much more commission work for the foreseeable future.
