With the rumors of there being an eventual restart for Warhammer Fantasy with The Olde World ...

Do you want GW to include pike units for the Empire?

And if not, why not?

hell ya, they are all over the lore and in dogs of war armies/units anyways, I'm honestly surprised GW never made Empire pikes before!

I would love if they would allow empire to have pikes. It would allow  me to use all my dogs of war pikemen.

Nah, I preffer they'd remake Dogs of War, give THEM pikes and then allow allying them with Empire armies  :icon_wink:.

I never understood why the Empire did not have pikes as standard issue in its arsenal. Historically, the bulk of HRE infantry consisted of Landsknechte whose main weapon was the pike. Local levies and militia in the HRE were more varied in their equipment, but also commonly used pikes.

Yes for pikes, of course!

I've always felt considering the scale of the game (10 men to a model), spears actually portray pikes. (And the DoW pike rules went over the top.)

Actually, it doesn't matter to me what GW does. I've been playing mostly non-GW games the past years anyway. KoW, Hail Caesar, T9A. I feel they portray better how the Empire fights than Warhammer ever did.

So far 6 out of 8 say yes!  Not quite matching the old "4 out of 5 doctors" recommend, but close. :icon_lol:

Although the answer regarding bringing back Regiments of Renown is interesting.

Pike were mentioned in the earliest background I had on the Empire. I have no idea why they weren't then manufactured as figures.

Makes sense, but anything GW does with Fantasy is completely irrelevant at this point. They lost my interest.

Re: Pikemen in the Empire, here's a pic from p.28 of The Enemy Within (1986)



The fellow with the half pike (??) is a pikeman. Not sure why they didn't give him a full one.

The text on p.30 says the armies of Nuln "have traditionally been the main defensive force of Stirland and Averland. These Counties are famous for their pikemen, one of whom is illustrated here, wearing the characteristically high boots and flamboyantly striped breeches of the 17th (Baron Olaf's Own) Regiment of Foot, based in Pfeildorf."

Somebody at GW obviously didn't take the WFRP seriously.  Maybe because Pheildorf is in Wissenland/Sudenland/Solland and not the Stirland and Averland also mentioned in the same fluff? Bah, no sense in trying to figure GW out ... lol.

That may have been the case in later sources, but the map that came with The Enemy Within does seem to fit what the text describes. Here's the relevant part, in which Pfeildorf could be in either Averland or Wissenland, but seems to be slightly closer to the former, due to being on the Averland side of what appears to be a big river dividing the two ...



Of course, there is also a tributary shown which muddles the matter somewhat. But back in 1986, I think I would have read the text and looked at the picture and seen no problem!

Mind you, I would have got confused by the fact that on p.14 it says the 9th Elector is Grand Baroness Etelka Toppenheimer of Sudenland, based in Pfeildorf, and on p. 23 that the capital of the province the Grand Barony of Sudenland is Pfeildorf.

So what Averland pikemen of the Army of Nuln are doing based there, I do not know.

I think I would have presumed the pikemen were somehow on loan, or where somehow mercenary in nature, or that the Baron Olaf had some connection to Pfeildorf.

Then again, like you said, no point in trying to figure out GW.

I love pikes.

If I wanna turn able-bodied citizens into soldiers, I give them pikes ...


Then I give more of them pikes ...


I arm my mercenaries with pikes ...


I even arm pirates with pikes ...


... although pirates tend to be very choosy about which pike they like ...


Then I send the pikemen out to march around the woods ...


and over bridges ...


... and to poke peasants ...


... and to face the foe fearlessly ...


Even when they die, they still can't give up their pikes ...


I am even in the process of giving them to halfings ...


In fact, I love them so much I even armed goblins with them ...

I'm guessing they never added pikes after dogs of war because they were moving towards more plastic models - and long thin plastic pikes just weren't doable.

Warlord's got pikemen. Landsknechts, ECW/TYW, and Macedonians. Maybe others? Victrix also have Macedonians. The Perrys have 15th century mercenaries. It's doable.

Yes, but when you look at the type of spears used in the 7th edition models, making pikes the same width but longer would mean lots of breakage.
They totally could have done plastic pikes using the same width as the older knights lances. ...or maybe I'm wrong and the lances only work because they are wider at bottom so are stronger.

At this point ... 17 yes and 4 no seems fairly telling. Maybe when the rumored new edition arrives we'll get pikes? Maybe the new edition even? Maybe, maybe.

Doubt it. More steam punk I am guessing. Think Imperial Guard in 40k - they will retcon Empire to primarily have handgunners as mainstay infantry.

It might depend if they want to have pikes in W:AoS.  Suspect the figures for Empire will be targeted and sold to W:AoS players as well.

Correct. I doubt we will see pikes again.
The differentiation for Empire in AoS will be high firepower cheap models. No other army offers it.
