Title: Hauptmann Gustl's Altdorf painting blog (Mordheim P500 -Estalian Expedition)

So here it begins. Hail to the Emperor. This is my Altdorf painting blog.

I have been lurking around here a lot and to my mind I am ready to completely join the fun of this great forum. Collecting WHF miniatures since the late 1990s I have always been interested in the empire and its development.

Hauptmann Gustl wants to rise from the ranks and therefore he must recruit lots of troops.

I will go for the traditional city state. I have no special list in mind but hundreds of miniatures to paint.

That's a lot of pistoliers!

Are you basing them like the one in the middle of the front rank? I hope so cos that looks good and the bright green is scary!

Thing that mainly jumps out at me that perhaps could help is that the horse eyes are kinda prominent, probably due to them being bigger than human eyes but painted the same way. I've taken in recent times to paint my horse eyes more 'realistic' after seeing other people not like the human effect and not really liking it myself. So that's mainly brown but with perhaps a little fleck of white in the corner if you want, but it doesn't really need it that much. They do have the dark pupil though so you could still put that on. I often try and go for a different brown to my horse so that it at least registers as being painted.

Anyway, just an idea. Look forward to more of your stuff appearing!

Thanks for the piece of advice. I will go over the eyes of the horses once more. Don't worry about the bases - they will be done when I have thought about the right mixture. The based one in the first rank was already done when I got the mini as most of my stuff is bought on ebay. What about the electrostatic grass GW is selling? Would you recommend it?

I would like to go on with two detachments of handgunners:

Detailed shot:

They will support a regiment of swordsmen (WIP).

I like GW's static grass. I've used two or three colours of it and it's worked nicely. Especially when you just use it for say 50% or less of the base, over a textured (brownish or whatever you want) base.

The grass I've used from other companies, whilst cheaper is a lot duller.

I just wish GW did more colours, that's all...

Alright, thank you very much. I will go for the grass and base my minis soon.  :smile2:

After painting a lot of cavalery  the last couple of weeks, which I hope I will be able to present some day, I needed to do something else. That's why I started another detachment for my swordsmen.

So here are the crossbows :

Unfortunately I don't have the crossbowmen of the 6th Edition in my selection, so I have to paint the new ones. To my surprise it was fun so far... but the many details suck a little bit.

Painting 10 winged lancers to be reinforcements for my army. As I have no experience with the feathers so far, I would like to ask you for some feedback and maybe a piece of advice.

Here are 4 of them (WIP):

The feathers have been painted with black basecoat, a layer of bleached bone, top with a mixture of 2/3 bleached bone and 1/3 chaos black, washed with Devlan Mud and then dry brushed with a 50/50 mix bleached bone and skull white.

To my mind they look good on the new horses of the pistoliers.

If you want to see some winge cavalry, take a look at this...

Google "hungarian winged hussar", they were the elite hungarian cavalry from the 18th century.

@ Valetus - Yes Sir, I will. I know that the new goblin green looks crappy. You can correct me if I am wrong but somehow GW changed the tone. The elder version didn't look that bright. Material (grass, movement trays and magnet bases) is ordered and I will base each unit as a whole as soon as it is complete. But to keep me motivated I hope that it's okay to post some more WIP pics. They will be exchanged when a unit is finished.

These are 5 fling scouts:

I love looking at painted minis!   The Ogre looks like you can turn him at and angle and that sword that sticks out wont be in the way and his eyeball will be looking straight forward. (His right foot in the foremost corner.)   :eusa_clap:

Thx for your comments. The Ogre Captain will either lead a regiment of halbardiers or pikemen. The halbards or pike will flank his left and right. The standard will be placed behind his huge appearance (in case of pikes). I will work on the eyeball again, cos I am not pleased yet.

@Warlord: I have to admit - the discipline of my troops is very low. No sergeants there to give the boys a proper flogging .

Based some men today and exchanged some pics. Let's hunt some ogres...

Therfore I have made a note to myself: No posting before basing. I will exchange all the ugly pics with greenish bases as soon as it is done.

The halberdiers look great! I also use guys from mixed editions in my horde of 50, but I did not paint them all exactly the same. I like that you used the quarters scheme on all of your halberdiers, it really makes them fit together nicely, despite being from different editions.

Long time, no post. But that doesn't mean that I was lazy. I am just enjoying the afternoon while painting some banners and flags. Because of not being a good freehand painter I print the motifs and colour them by brush. The result is the following:

X-Bows:

Halbardiers:

To my mind they look okay but I am not really pleased. So: Do you have any hints or suggestions what I could do better?

spray sealer or varnish the paper before you try to paint it. You can also after sealing give it a light coat (transparent) of white acrylic primer, I think you will be pleasd with the result.  You can also try using a higher quality of paper to begin with, 20lb cold press highest brightness you can find, high fiber content helps sometimes depending on the fiber used.  steveb

Unfortunately I had not that much time and motivation over the last couple of months. Therefore a small update on the halberds as I did some basing. Especially the 2nd pic, showing the captain of the regiment, didn't turn out that well (demotivated I played with photoshop). But he will be set in scene as soon as the regiment is finished. I also plan to add a warrior priest.

Long time, no post again. Taking part in a competition called Project 250 at the moment on another tabletop site. I am supposed to paint at least 250 points each month. Here are my first outcomes.

Some converted Halbards (old plastic models) and an Altdorfian Empire veteran which was also my first attempt green stuffing some parts of the mini, in that case hammer, cloak and hat. Therefore please be kind with your comments  :-D.

You have a lovely regiment, with all those old school models mixed with modern. Those old plastic halberdiers were the first models I ever bought for Empire. I painted them in almost exactly the same colour scheme you do (just like they were on the photo on the box), with golden cuirass and all. Memories!

That veteran does a great overall impression. At first glance I didn't notice he was converted from a regular halberdier!

I love those regiments where every model (or virtually every model) is different; a kitbash, a conversion, a classic model, something you found at the bottom of your bitz box .... Your army looks great. Wonderful stuff!

Post by: Hauptmann Gustl on November 29, 2011, 03:08:20 PM
Thx for the nice comments. I really love those old fellas as they can be painted pretty easily. During my P250 I experimented with a new colour scheme that to my mind fits to my army very well. It is a mixture between Altdorfians and Reiklanders and therefore includes white, red and blue. It goes pretty well with the old state troopers but I despeartely failed to use it on the new ones. The idea is to create a supporting cast of my original troops lead by a captain named Fabius Schlegl. So here are some halbardiers of a new regiment coming up as well as my first greatswords:

Thanks for your comment. Indeed the far right one in the first pic and the one with the helmet in the middle (second pic) look very mad-eyed. I'll try to get rid of that. Cheers.

The whole project 250 - painting miniatures over half a year; 250 points each month ends in May. A shot of the whole poroject will follow then. In the meantime I work on more mininis and modular regiment bases to spice the army up a little.

Here is the March block. 20 swordsmen with complete command and an empire general, all in all worth 258 points. I took the old Rutgar model but as a consequence of today's deadline I painted it rather quickly and I am not satisfied. So if you have some cues how I could improve Rutgar (especially highlighting blood red, gore red and the cape), please let me know.

Still good work!!

The final phase of my P250 - therefore I finished just in time. Here are 25 halbards, 10 crossbows and a mortar + crew. I added 3 hero figs representing Hauptmann Reinholdus, the dwarf Gervin and repeater gun expert Lord Chaot Oml who sopported me during the project. So here are the last 280 points.

@ Maza - Here you are. It is not my whole army because I have to split it (not enough room in my rather small apartment), but an overview on the models which I painted in the P250 for the last half year. This is also my first group picture and to my mind it is difficult to focus on a large crowd of models, even with a decent camera. So if you have any hints for me, let me know.

Ring the bell for a new P250 and let's paint 250 points each month for half a year.

I would like to start with some infantrymen and a new colour scheme representing Altdorf and its sense of belonging to the Reikland. Therefore I decided to go for grey in a new halberd regiment.

Then there are also some old metal figures in the classic scheme:

I like this idea of painting a block of so many points a month.
I'm going to make an attempt at this with my painting.

Thank you both.

@ Maza: How many halbardiers? Good question. I don't know because I have never counted them. But there are always some left...  :-D. Bought a huge pile once - still have about 60 to go. So I am a strict believer and follower of the cult of the monopose halberdier ;-).

@ Etrigan: This is part of a competition on another forum. You can decide whether you would like to participate in the Project 250 in which you go for 250 points each month over half a year, so a total of 1500 points, or in the Project 500, in which you paint blocks of 500 points in one and a half months over the course of a half year, a total of 2000 points. There are deadlines at the end of each month, which makes it sometimes a quite stressful activity but also gives you a lot of joy when beating the clock.

<hint, hint>You should join in the 2013 Painting Challenges - you would easily get yours done each month!</hint,hint>

Great painting as always - the red and blue has always been a favorite of mine, ever single I painted the store's army back in 6th ed.

I think we may have to incorporate the Cult of the Monopose Halberdier into the Cult of Beckinsale - I think he could be (one of) her (many) consort(s); the only man who is able to stand her Exalted Lusciousness without going into spasms.

I'm just looking for anything that might motivate me to paint. I don't get to play much so that makes me paint even less. Maybe if I did try to do small blocks every month I would actually get something done.

It is German and you find it under www.tabletopwelt.de - there are quite nice projects, most of them painted more skillfully than mine. I recommend a chaos demon project of a guy named Jimmy Grill. I has recently won the competition and presents some awesome conversions. If you are looking for decent empire projects I recommend Victors Reichsgarde (he is on warhammerempire too) or another empire project by a painter named Karl Martell. The hall of fame section has also a very shiny Middenheim Project but unfortunately I do not remember its name.

As someone with a large - mostly unpainted - Empire collection, it's a great motivator.
I love all the characterful models and the vibrant colour scheme :)

Cool collection of misfits and adventurers. Have you been able to make such close combat oriented warbands work? The campagins I've participated in always end with slings and bows completely dominating the field.

Unfortunately I am more a painter than a player and therefore I do not know much about tatctics or playing warbands successfully. I choose the models because I think they would fit to the theme of the band. I even can imagine to increase the number of band members a little and go beyond the limit of 15.

I have recently purchased some heroforge self-customized duelists. I would like to share these to give you an impression on the progress in the field of 3d printed miniatures. To my mind, the size is somewhere between 28 and 30mm and would fit to WHFB - let's see as soon as I will have the mini rebased. It looks like this:

(http://i856.photobucket.com/albums/ab121/HauptmannGustl/GOPR0522_zps2ac612fa.jpg) (http://s856.photobucket.com/user/HauptmannGustl/media/GOPR0522_zps2ac612fa.jpg.html)

As the mini is made out of a very transparent material, you can hardly see its details, neither in the picture nor when holding it in front of your eyes, so I will try to get it painted and give you an update. The buttomline, at least so far, seems to be that you get an individual mini at a relatively high price and the question whether one day 3d-printing will be able to compete with minitures coming from traditional sculpting and molds is still open.

I'll try to paint this till the end of the week to deliver further input for discussion.

The next step: both comrades have been basecoated and washed with nuln oil and earthshade. So, there are indeed some details. Let's see how the next layer turns out. I am in good spirits, even though still the printed minis seem to be less detailed, this is definitely worth a shot.

Got my hands on 2 troops of sigmarines. Although I actually enjoyed painting them (or painting something else than Altdorf), there won't follow more due to the fact that I am still not sure what I really think about the strange new setting. Therefore I am rather leaning towards some old dogs of war models...

@ Steveb: Ouch... how come? I upload my pics via photobucket, as it was once recommended when I decided to join warhammer-empire.com. Sorry, but I have no answer to that. Maybe times have changed and so have ways of uploading pics. Maybe it's firefox, maybe it's tough luck, maybe it's even Nuffle...

Some more Sigmarines. This time: Retributors

Thx for your comments again.

@Steveb: Those backgrounds are taken from the internet and simply printed out on photopaper. There glare problem is indeed there as one can see in the lower left hand corner of the jungle Estalian picture. I am not much of a photographer, so most of the time I keep on experimenting with lighting and changing the angle of the camera until I am satisfied with the result. Cheers to digital photography.

@Shadespyre: I have recently purchased a musician. Beorg sounds interesting. What is your location? Maybe we can work something out.

Hauptmann, thanks for answering, I must try that soon, I was also thinking of using indirect lighting like through a semi-transparent paper, or a reflection screen, but your way sounds easier, and definitely looks good.  steveb
