Title: Discworld Inspired - It's 5pm so its.....................
Post by: JAK on January 01, 2019, 05:53:08 PM
The Watch are completed and my other blog ‘By Jingo – Discworld at War’ had begun to deviate from its original intention, plus with its images hosted on Photobucket being unreliable it’s time for a rethink and new blog.

The history and development of Discworld will unfortunately not progress – (spoiler alert) it has been left in a state of rapidly changing flux with the introduction of the industrial revolution via the steam engine. It is also well known that Terry was a fan of Steam-Punk so could this also have influenced the way things may have been developed.

This blog will be a partial renewal of ‘By Jingo‘ as there are a number of units that I haven’t got round to building but I also have a number of ideas for units that while not official ‘Discworld’ I hope will fit its theme. The ‘By Jingo’ units were also built to use as proxies for WFB rules but as I’ve not got into AoS the game rules may no longer affect my builds but will explain past limitations I’ve placed in the Basic Concept.

Basics Concept

Discworld is made up of many powerful nations and cities who have a history of fighting one another but even though (2nd spoiler alert) Jingo is about war little detail was given about the make-up of armies or the art of war other than to say armies consist of massed banners and spears with some use of horses.

The Author’s descriptions didn’t help at times; there is a passage where Vimes is attacked by what his thoughts say is an Ankh-Morpork halberd but the book narrative first calls a pike, then states he dodges the blade. To me, and for the purposes of this work, a pike is a point on a 18’ stick, a halberd is an axe head on a 6’ stick and a spear is a point on a 6-12’ stick.

When Colon tried to use his old army bow it was suggested that this was old technology and the re-enactment of a 300 year old battle involved the use of tin pikes. Therefore I’ve decided that the main weapons will be the crossbow and the spear or halberd, and no unit would have bows, pikes or lance. (However Colon served in two named regiments, I’ve shown one in the past where they still use the bow, and the other is planned and is armed with the pike)

Vime's dress uniforms had tights and slashed/puffy sleeves and the palace guards had feather/plumes in their helmets which is why I chose the Empire figures on which to base my models.

A Gonne has been invented (and destroyed) so there are no black powder weapons – or ill-treating of swamp dragons.

Leonard of Quirm and his inventions are a da Vinci take off and with the introduction of steam this allows a lot of opportunities for unusual units, some with a steam-punk influence but hopefully without resorting to lots of cogs, wheels or goggles.

Onwards

Over the next two months the local GW store is holding a Legion of Legend modelling/painting competition (basically some units and a leader) which I hope to enter using the above concept. This will be a start then I’ll see where I go from there.

When the Fulgurite Electro-Priests originally came out my first thought was how can I convert them into a weapon worthy of Leonard. The snail backpack would become some sort of wind up/clockwork generator and the two half-moon ends of the poles would be joined together to form a halberd type blade at one end.

I don’t know how it all evolved into this.

Post by: JAK on February 08, 2019, 07:57:22 PM
This is a type of model that I’ve wanted to make for some time after I was given a broken Skaven kit. The competition seemed a good excuse to start and basically after cleaning up both of the wheels I’ve just added bits of plastic card and other kits.

There is no precedent of this type of transport in the Discworld chronicles, not even a fragment of an idea from Leonard, but there was an incident with a machine of torture in Hades so I’ve no qualms about including them here.

One of Leonard of Quirm’s experiments was to try and get lightning by sticking copper and zinc rods into lemons. His contemporaries said he was mad and even if he succeeded in getting tame lightning what use would it be.

With a man of his obvious intelligence I think my interpretation is in itself quite tame as to what he could have achieved.

As explained in the intro I’m no longer trying to fit these units to AoS rules so even I’m not sure what this weapon does; it could just be an electrified halberd but as we’re talking tame lightning it must have some form of a ranged attack.

..The Omnian Quisition

Omnia was at one time a religious state that only worshiped the Great God Om. The Devine Legion was its military army whose main job was to bring Om’s word to its neighbouring countries, usually by force. Internally the Quisition looked after the wellbeing of its citizens by expurgating sin and purifying the ungodly in the fires of the Qusition’s pit.

If you’ve read The Last Hero you might be wondering what happened to the young lute player. His life or death experience with Cohen the Barbarian and the Gods had a profound effect on him but while he vowed to continue his barding to keep alive the stories of myth and legend he knew he must in future be true to himself and not conform to how others expected him to be.

The first thing to be ditched was the lute to be replaced by the homeland’s traditional instrument. While the world may be your mollusc it will be found to be true that after many years traveling around the Discworld, all roads eventually arrive at Ankh-Morpork. The perfect place to settle down, and following an encounter with Dr Lawn the final adjustment was made.

She now plays and sings the traditional tales for the Barbarian and Other Heroes who frequent The Drum.

Some of you will remember that in Days of Yore we held an annual Pleasant Surprise miniature exchange. Due to a number of postal problems figures sent to me have been lost or gone astray – however I’m pleased to report that despite the best efforts of the world’s postal services I have finally received my 2017 surprise (or at least a replacement as they did manage to lose the original).

The figure has a couple of small chips that I will have to touch up but other than that has survived well during her travels – which included a 3200km round trip back to sender as it was delivered to an empty house 100m from me and the Estate Agent returned it rather that trying to find the correct recipient.

The figure is from a range I’ve not seen but have heard of - Balalaika Maiden from Bruegelburg by Lead Adventure Miniature – I like this  sculpt and the rest of their figures but I’ve been let down so often by online sales that I would never have bought them unseen. (Why can’t figure makers agree what a scale is and ALL stick to it!)   The scale seems right and as she goes well with Angua I may invest.

Many thanks to Zygmund for his perseverance.

Discworld goblins are a little different to the ones you love to slaughter and are just starting to leave their underground dwellings to be introduced to those who believe they are more civilised. It has been found that they can be very helpful with technical matters. For this reason Lord Vetinari has let them help Leonard of Quirm with some of his inventions. Leo very rarely leaves his cell in the Palace dungeon and has requested a Chief Engineer to assist the Goblins with testing one of his projects.

I’ve wanted to make an airship since seeing steveb’s flying circus and was given the Gunhauler kit as payment for some painting. I’d always intended to crew it with Goblins (as per the story above) but when the GW Store competition came up I revised the goblin crew so I could enter it. The sad loss of our own Chief Engineer has also made this a tribute to him and the inspiration he has given to all. I hope where ever he’s viewing this from they provide the required diapers.

Jaw-dropping piece.

There's so much going on.

Why did the goblins bring that beast? To make sure the birds fly? And did the beast just eat one of the birds? And the last one still refuses to fly?

Inventive use of the Gunhauler bits!

The story behind the airship – There are Discworld pictures of Leonard of Quirm in a balloon type devise being pulled by small dragons. This was the starting point but as I had the birds they replaced the dragons. Pictures of a US Civil War balloon being filled from two containers which created a gas (Helium?) resulted in the loading platform and the two barrels – one with AchToO and the other something highly volatile. There are cylinders on the top of the gas bag to represent that the middle expands as the two liquids are combined in flight.

You cannot see clearly in the pictures but in front of the platform are two posts with rings at the top. The keel of the basket has a hole in it so that when lined up between the posts a wooden spar goes through all three to moor the ship, with an anchor for added security. The birds have perches at their feeding station (but no water?)

What you haven’t seen before these pictures were taken is that a goblin had been requested by its partner to take their little fluffy wuffy lapdog walkies. Around the bottom of one of the above mentioned posts is that well known chemical element K9P. While Fluffy was making this deposit he took a fancy to the wooden stick jutting out of the post and broke it off. This caused the ship to break free and start to rise, which naturally frighten the wits out of poor little Fluffy who dashed through the area where the raptors were feeding, in turn frightening two of them who took flight.

As said before the goblins are naturally cave dwellers and are unsure about being on the surface so getting them to go into the air has been a trial. The bunny comfort blankets have helped and one is using his to try to help calm poor Fluffy down.  Medicinal amounts of amber liquids have also been given to give the goblins ‘Dutch’ courage but the one taking his on the top of the steps has his eyes closed and hasn’t realised the basket is no longer there. His friend who leapt onto the anchor to give it extra weight has realised this and has turned to watch the fun unaware that he is about to crack his head on the bird perch.

The ship was not quite ready for take-off. The co-pilot is still eating his lunch and as the raptors are not normally so keen to take off the goblin at the top is preparing a ‘donkey’s carrot’.

The model, for me, was fairly straight forward to make, although I should have thought more about how the elements went together as it’s quite difficult to photograph the component part.  The only bit that didn’t work as planned was the rein for the sitting bird – I was assured by the model shop owner that the wire was stiff enough to take the weight of the model – it was alright with just the basket but the bag was too much so I had to use the plastic stand.

When ever I been to a wargaming show I’ve been fascinated by the amount of stuff that’s available in MDF. I don’t have space to store buildings, etc. so have never bought anything but have always wanted to try one. They seem to be a popular buy yet very few seem to appear on Forums etc. I don’t think I’ve seen one here; its all either scratch built or resin.

I saw this wagon a few years back which seemed right for this project. Being laser cut it does have its limitations mainly due to round parts being square, and I didn’t like the wheels or have suitable replacements so it got side-lined.

Having looked at the project with refreshed eyes I think the cart to be practical for this purpose should have 4 wheels, but this is Discworld so things can be on a different level of logic.

This is my first MDF build and you can see that unlike my attitude to GW plastic kits I have actually looked at the instruction sheet before starting the build.

Not sure if I will paint it with a colour or stain/wash as wood and so have sanded off some of the burnt edges so it will start with the same shade base. A very light touch is all that is required to remove this dark carbon deposit.

I still don’t have any replacement wheels but to keep in spirt with the kit will use the original ones and try to round off the spokes at the front if not the back as well.

I plan to add a seat and footrest for the driver. These will be cut from the MDF frame and planking detail will be scored on.

There is an alternative part for the rear, I intend to cut one to model the rear tail board lowered.

Besides the squaring of rounded parts the other complaint I have with MDF kits are the fixing lugs. Many manufacturers come up with ingenious methods to hide them but others are left to stick out like a sore thumb, and its up to the builder to put up with this ‘fault’ or cover it in some way. In this kit the cover hoops are meant to be on the inner of the wooden sides and the outer should just be planking. Unfortunately the fixing lugs break up the line of the planking and looks wrong. I intend to cover these fixing lugs with thin strips of paper and card and will paint as part of the metal hoop.

I started to round the spokes on the wheels but they began to delaminate so have been put to one side for now. Because of this the shafts for the horse have only had the edges taken off with sand paper as I decided not to go the full hog and try to make these truly circular. I’ve not yet looked at what furniture needs to be added to harness the horse.

The seat and foot rest were cut from the MDF frame. The laser cut detailing is the same width as my razor saw so that made cutting the plank details easy.

The tail board was cut from the alternative part and benefits from a wire hinge and cotton rope support. The piece of luggage being taken out to is to make it more secure.

I’ve started painting, particularly the interior so that I can fit a canvas cover. The cover will be from the same napkin/tissue that I used for the 40K tent, it has an over scale woven pattern but I like the look of it better than plain paper or normal tissue paper. The wagon contains all the supplies required for the modern reporter including a sleeping cameraman, pigeons to carry reports back to the big City and sustenance in the form of “Capt Horace Calumney’s Patent Field Biscuits”.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52071361567_2c8cec7243_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nknkDZ)

(Spoiler alert) It seems a long time since I’ve worked on metal figures, the reporter is GW but don’t know where his assistant/wife (depending on where you are in reading the books) came from. Both will need a little work; William for a more natural stance and Sacharissa to remove the nod towards the Brother V style of sculpting.
Title: Re: Discworld Inspired - The War Correspondent.
Post by: JAK on May 15, 2022, 09:08:36 AM
The wheels have a line cut in to divide the spokes from the rim. I used this line as a guide to trim the spokes back to give them a more realistic look. Unfortunately when I started to file the edges off the spokes this cut edge exposed the layers of the MDF and it started to delaminate. I soaked the spokes in super glue and continued filing and I’m reasonable happy with the result. The rear of the spokes have also been filed just enough to take the sharp edge off. Not sure what type of base it will be going on– a cobbled street or country road – but at least the wheels aren’t bad enough that it has to be a deeply rutted muddy road.

My research showed that the bottom edge of the canvas covers on wagons was usually flat, I expected it to be pulled down by the ropes (that I decided to omit) that hold it onto the wagon sides.

William and Sacharissa have been remodeled but now I’ve been sidetracked so don’t know when I’d get round to putting some paint on them.

A war correspondent needs a war to report on and this was one of the units involved in that war. The unit was described as being armed with: a sword, 12’ spear, crossbow, shield, breastplate, shako or heavy helmet; and the book cover shows a typical British Napoleonic uniform.

I originally planned this unit prior to AoS when I used GW rules to build my units as viable WFB units. This one was to have consisted of 10 named characters with a standard, musician and additional troops to form a 20-30 ‘man block. The mixture of crossbows and spears would allow 2 rows of crossbows to fire in ranged attacks and 2 rows of spears in close combat. The only limit to the size of the unit would have been the numbers of suitable weapons I could obtain.

Now that I’ve looked at them again, and we have AoS so I don’t worry about them conforming to gaming rules, I’m just going to make the named characters.

Most of the unit are now glued together. They are mainly from so-called 28mm Historical plastics. I never realised how bad these ranges were for compatibility with one another. I can understand sci-fi/fantasy manufacturers not scaling with each other now we have 28mm, 30mm, 32mm and 35mm given as a scale, all with their own Heroic variations and the measurement being either to the eyes or top of the head. I did expect Historic to be better as they have stuck with 28mm but as I’ve found WWII vehicles scaled at 1/48, 1/56 or anything made up in between it explains why I’m not totally happy with them.

They don’t have to be ranked up so have been modelled at ease enjoying a mug of saloop. All need some GS work so it will probably be well into next month before another update.

My work space is in the high 30degrees so as in previous years my paints are stored away, we’ll just have to see how many survive – the newer bottles seem to dry up first. New problem this year in that my bottles of liquid poly cement have both dried up/evaporated – tops were on properly.

…. Interesting Times?

Many years ago Cathay was a popular topic in the Warhammer world, and someone I’ve forgotten the name of, was making some neat converted Cathay/Chinese figures on this Forum. In the Discworld there is a Country with a China/Japan flavour and at the time I did think that if GW ever did this army I would adapt it but so far its come to nought.

As well as the historical stuff I’ve been showing on the other thread I also found I had a couple of sprues of Japanese warriors, so I’ve been re-reading the relevant novel to see if I could put a Discworld slant on these figures. The book covers war and unrest and there is mention of samurai, ninjas and mass armies.

Having waded through and read all 261 pages I now have copious notes on all aspects of this Country’s military forces which I can use build these figures.

Guards:-
There are lots of different Guards to choose from; External City Gate House Guards,  Forbidden City Gate Guards, Imperial Guards, Guards on horses patrolling the roads and Guards in general guarding other areas of the City.

One group of Guards is described as having black armour and another had ornate, black-enamelled helmets and huge moustachioed visages painted on them, leaving only the owner's mouth uncovered. The mask could be raised. The ferocity of helmet suggested the officers. Guards are only mentioned with swords.

Soldiers:-
In the main they seem to be “infantry, heavily be-weaponed with big swords and shields, commanders on horseback riding up and down in front of their legions who were a forest of lances and coloured pennants. Hundreds of thousands of men looked like quite a lot of men when you saw them close to”.

The author’s use of the word ‘lance’ is similar to his previous use of pike/halbard/spear in that it appears he just wanted an alternative name for a stick with a point on the end as the word ‘cavalry’ doesn’t appear anywhere in the book.

 Archers:-
Archers are even better served with the single line “a sergeant must have screamed a handful of archers into line, because a few arrows shattered with absolutely no effect.”

I have 10 figures - 5 Samurai and 5 Ashigaru Missile Troops both made by Warlord Games.

I decided to built some as Guards and, surprise, surprise, some as Archers; and this is what I’ve come up with:-
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52294090209_62539adcb4_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nF3T7Z)

Like the other historical sprues they are finely sculpted with a little flash, but it needs to be removed. The Samurai figures have some unusual joints which with a little work could turn them into mini action figures; the body could twist at the waist and the arms move up and down. If the weapons weren’t so to scale* (thin and fragile) I might have been tempted to try. I cut every thing off the sprues, made a central pile and just built, ending up with a few body swaps, but no conversion work as such was needed. I have used the Samurai helmeted heads to match the book description. The only extra work I had to do was drill out holes so that I could fit the Sashimono.
* except that the drawn swords included in the kit are wider and have a larger tsuba than their counterparts modelled in the saya.

We’re going away now for a few weeks and I’m not sure when I’ll be back. Hopefully when I am it will be cooler and I can get the paints out of cold storage. I’m taking some reading matter so things might change again if I come up with a new project – just have to wait and see.

Title: Re: Discworld Inspired - Miss Eumenides Treason
Post by: JAK on November 17, 2022, 08:16:54 AM
Miss Eumenides Treason is an 111 years old witch living in the Ramtops. She is blind and bandages her eyes, now relying on the borrowing of animals to see her way in the world. The local villagers made her the perch that rests on her shoulder for the two ravens she currently uses. She has a heavy rusty clock attached to her belt which many villages believe is a replacement for her long dead natural heart. She can walk or more correctly scuttle around very quickly with her two walking sticks.

Miss Treason delivers Justice to the village, lighting the two black candles in their skull holders when doing this duty.

If you have read the books you’ll understand about Boffo, Wicked Old Witch hat Number Three a must for Scary Parties; the Feegle, Daft Wullie and Horace the Lancre Blue.

The figure is based on Torgillius the Chamberlain from the GW Cursed City box set. I started by cutting the bat, rat, dog and notice board off the figure. The edge off his coat was trimmed off before filling the gap with some plastic card and using GS to sculpt a skirt and repair the damage where the dog had been moulded on. New hands were fitted holding bent wire walking sticks. A spare head from the bits-box was added, most of which is covered in GS hair and eye bandage.

The second raven is a cast of the first using one of these puttys you put in hot water and then press over an object to form a mould. They work well for a flat objects but I’ve not had much success with a 2 part mould. The raven is a bit thick but being black it’s not so obvious.

The skulls and candles are GW parts and the columns just various diameter plastic tubing. Wullie is an Epic Ork and the cheese all GS. I tried normal cotton wool for the cobwebs but it didn’t look right so I acquired a small piece of webbing from a Halloween decorated bush in our street.

This figure is Sharkbelly’s fault.

I’d never seen or heard of the Biophagus before he showed his conversion so I hope he doesn’t mind that I’ve copied this his idea.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52963950047_61677ee519_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oGf67x)

The top row shows the initial parts that I thought about using, and the bottom most of the parts ready to paint.

Before joining the body halves together I cut the handle off the pistol to make it into a pouch. I didn’t want to use the Genestealer legs and carved a pair of Empire ones down to fit (by coincident they were the same ones used by Sharkbelly for his Engineer.) which also allowed me to reduce his height slightly as he is much taller than the old Empire figures he is going to join. I trimmed a little off the bottom of his coat but he is still well over 6 foot. I’ve also added the hourglass from the donor body to his belt in case he has to time an experiment. Rather than the staff he is now holding a glass phial.

There is a large hole where his head goes and having been through my bits box again I’ve gone with Sharkbelly’s choice as the beard covers most of the gap and saves a lot of GS sculpting. I changed the floppy feathered hat for a fur trimmed one like the rest of his unit.

He has a portable table with fold out work surface and set of drawers containing, who knows what. (just got to finish painting the extras)

The Biophagus comes with his own familiar which originally I didn’t intend to use but I then thought if a spell at the University resulted in the Librarian an Alchemist’s potion can create Herr Verstecken.

The table is covered in the tools of his trade; the two flasks from his backpack are now mounted on retort stands and part of the backpack is now a box containing glass jars. There are bottles and a pile of books from the interior of a Hurricanum, the load for a rocket being prepared plus a book of spells formulae.
Title: Re: Discworld Inspired - Guild of Alchemists - Experiment Delivery Service?
Post by: JAK on June 13, 2023, 07:32:00 PM
I’ve realised that my photos of the Guild of Alchemists that Thomas was built to join were in one of the threads ruined by Photobucket. I rebased them for a Build an Army competition a few years back; they are shown again here with new pictures and their original story.
_________________________________

For those of you that don’t know Discworld, Ankh-Morpork is ruled by a cruel and ruthless tyrant, Lord Vetinari. He has agents and spies everywhere. Anything you don’t understand in the following account will be due to a spy passing on the information or an agent ensuring something happened.

The Guild of Alchemists, as alchemists in all fiction and real life, have one main aim which unfortunately in Ankh-Morpork means many explosions and damage to their Guild House and surrounding buildings. Fed up of this daily occurrence Lord Vetinari made an unannounced official visit to the Guild during which he requested a demonstration of experiment 67/45D. A glass test tube was set up, filled with many coloured liquids and powders and ignited with a small flame. Inexplicably the tube turned round on its stand, the flame, now at the bottom burst into life and the tube left its stand and launched itself upwards through the ceiling, the upper four floors and the roof of the building and once into the open air descended behind the Palace to a height of 8 foot where it cruised along Upper Broadway and on to the road to Sto Lat. Nobby Nobbs on guard duty at the Hubwards Gate said he lost sight of it around a mile out of town. Vetinari immediately banned the Guild from conducting any experiments within 3 miles of the city walls.

Over the next few months, many discussions were held in the Guild which resulted in the development of a projectile that could fire experiments the required 3 miles away from the city saving on transport and other costs. After further refinements they could be precisely targeted meaning that a single man on foot could easily monitor all the day’s landings. It was a shock then when 6 months after his first visit Vetinari paid another visit to the Guild and ordered them to provide a number of their projectile launchers and projectiles with a charge of experiment 67/48F loaded with either experiments 23/55, 76/56R or 85/22M for military use. To placate their objections he agreed to a small space being made available between the two named experiments into which the Guild could load another experiment of their choice. The Guild would also be able to claim all gold found on the military training areas and on any future battlefield, excluding coins, buttons and teeth which he felt were the perks of the infantry.

The first projectile launcher consists of a standard pack of seven tubes into which projectiles can be placed. They can be loaded on site or back at the Guild House and are easy to transport via cart to the permanently firing area based outside the city walls. The tubes are then firmly chained onto a firing carriage before ignition. One of the fuses appears to have gone out but no one has noticed yet.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52972757990_4d44230ad5_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oH2epC)

For busy or productive days at the Guild a clockwork launcher is used. The centre revolves and individual projectiles are loaded after lighting the fuse using the patented ignition system. It can fire a missile every 10 seconds with an accuracy to within 100 feet which unfortunately makes it a difficult and dangerous task for the experiment observer, but Vetinari was most impressed.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52972758025_874c9b084d_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oH2eqe)

For that one-off experiment a number of smaller units have been devised to save having to wait to use the larger launchers. A hand cart that can take up to 4 projectiles and individual tubes with folding legs that become their own launchers.
The piazza's centre star marks the standing point for the newly developed hand held bazooka launcher, although it seems there are still a few teething problems with it. It is also the place where Thomas Silverfish, President of the Alchemist Guild likes to set up his his portable work station on the occasionally times he leaves the Guild building. With his faithful assistant Herr Verstecken he is seen preparing experiments to be loaded into waiting rocket shells.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52972517939_b3af568b07_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oH113P)

Following steveb’s tradition of showing what happens at the receiving end, one of those aliens who was  previously seen on the Photobucket destroyed thread has found what he thought was a dud. Looks like he may also have found/be the missing ingredient for turning base metal.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52972833503_59b63313e3_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oH2BRz)

Discworld might not have guns or black powder but at least it now has artillery.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52972374746_0dc8ed4df5_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oGZgtY)

Unfortunately I have no WiP of the figures and just these few of a new base.
The launchers are scratch build incorporating parts from the GW Empire Helblaster/Helstorm Rocket Battery; the rockets, one gun carriage and the box for the hand cart. The gunners are a mixture of empire and Brettonian figures and the other gun carriage is from a metal Helblaster.
The figures came inside the City Walls for the army competition and the piazza display was so they could be seen behind some infantry units lined up in front of them. The piazza has solid wooden bases with thin wood walls which have been covered in cardboard flagstones and bricks. Some strip-wood and plastic balls decorate the tops of the walls.

While making the City Watch I made a number of additional cobblestone boards, the intention being to rebase AoS style some of the already built Ankh-Morpork units that Photobucket lost to the Forum. My RSI is still giving some grief but no real diagnosis despite it being well past the 6 weeks rest the ‘Quack’ originally said would cure, but I felt the need to do something constructive.

This is an old unit that I don’t think has been shown on any Forum before. They were built around the time Mordheim was popular although they were not specifically designed as a playable group. They did have a display board that has been damaged which is part of the reason I’ve rebased them first.

The back wall and signpost had been detached but were otherwise undamaged and have been used to cover the unrequired holes of the new board. For those of you that have read the book you may recognise the character who doesn’t appear but who’s coming is foretold and for those of you that have seen the film you may recognise one of the thousands of ‘extras’ that appeared in it.*

Jonathan Teatime is a trained assassin, pretty in a boyish way with a young, open and friendly smiling pink and white face topped with curly hair. One faintly glowing grey glass eye, the other normal eye yellow-white with a small pupil like a pinhole - a tiny dot in a sea of white. He is matchstick thin, but strong and had weapons concealed about his clothes.

The original figure is Aenur a hooded elf swordsman from the Mordheim game. He has a new head and a pistol crossbow to replace his sword. Being an assassin I added as many additional weapons as I could, not an easy task due to the stance of the figure; a knife through the top of his boots, an extra knife handle at the front of his body and the bottom tip of a sword scabbard peeking out below his cape against his left leg. Finally, the hand holding his cape across his front, Dracula style, also holds a knife which follows the line of his cape and being of assassins darkened steel is not always noticed.

He was painted a little brighter than I would have normally done an assassin mainly due to the fact that I entered him in a painting competition. All was going well until someone from the audience said “but he’s not an Elf”. The shop manager returned to him, said it’s been converted as well I’d better disqualify it and promptly awarded his best mate the winner’s title.

Mr Brown is a neat elderly man. A locksmith by trade who carried his tools around in a big leather tool bag which included little springy things, little bottles of alchemy and a ring of several hundred almost identical pieces of bent wire.

An old Games Workshop villager to which was added the tool bag and ring of lock picks, then painted in many shades of brown for some reason.

Mr Sideney is a student wizard who’s belongings included a pointy hat, a thin book and a lantern with a green filter.

Mr Sideney started as a wood elf spearman but by the time I had finished with the milliput not even the Games Workshop staff could recognise their own figure, although the body is nearly as it was. I added the pointed hat and robe to the floor plus belt to hid the join and a small bag for his tools. The book and lantern are Mordheim accessories, the book was thinned down before being glued together and his hand had to be remodelled to hold it.

Chickenwire wore boots and had a sword.

He and the remaining figures were built out of parts contained in the Empire Militia box. With so few details about him he ended up with the pair of legs with thigh high boots and is armed with a sword and dagger.

Medium Dave Lillywhite was a thoughtful and patient heavy set man, considered intelligent as some of his tattoos were spelt wright. He smokes cigarettes which he rolls himself from a bag of tobacco he carries. Armed with a sword he is protective of his brother Banjo.

None of the Militia heads looked intelligent so one from the Empire crossbowman set was used together with one of their bodies with a breastplate. He is only armed only with a sword so I felt he needed a little bit of armour. He has a small length of wire protruding from his mouth for a cigarette. His tattoo is not one of the correctly spelt ones. It's a red rose with the word "rows" underneath it.

Banjo Lillywhite was the largest man of the group. A big bald head, with pink piggy eyes, always had one blocked nostril and was open mouthed; a blank vacant face while waiting for an order or a new thought to turn up.

To emphasize his size he was given a large two-handed sword. The origin of the plastic head is not known, it had been on a number of different figures before but was just what Banjo required, big, bald and opened mouthed.

Peachy had dreadlocks, a beard you could keep goats in and carried a crossbow.

I chose a head with a lot of hair and then added more with milliput, sculpting it with a pin point. In addition to his crossbow he has a sword.

Catseye wears boots with laces.

I felt the group needed another missile man and a one-eyed marksman seemed just right for the name. His boots have been fashioned like a pair of Doc Martens.
