Long time no see.
Hope all of you are doing good, I was cleaning out my storage and came across bits and pieces of warhammer. I sold my last one with a lot of nice oop minis. :icon_sad:
When I saw the old minis I feel the urge to paint so I painted a unit of handgunners. And of course they are ostlanders!

Very nice.
-
Looks beautiful. I'm always impressed by people who can do solid white so well.

Thank you guys!

Layers, going from dark grey to white. Takes some time.. :eusa_wall:

Ooooh nice. You've used snow on their bases! It looks cool and I rarely see snow on Empire minis, except for the Middenlanders. Great job.
-
I like 'em! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Nice, atmospheric unit! :-)

that's what I was thinking!! great work sir :::cheers:::
-
Thank you guys.
I'm trying to do the units a bit more dynamic but still playable(ish).

Thank you, I like the thought of hardened northerners from ostland.
-
That makes two us then! :biggriin:
-
So I took some poorly painted spearmen I bought a long time ago from eBay and started to make them into ostlanders. For this weekend my plans are to finish these spearmen and one special canon +crew
VIP

See you later this week :closed-eyes:
-
Excellent choice of miniatures! Is the Ogre going to join the spearmen ranks? Will we see an Ogre spearman conversion? :)

Still thinking about it :) it's either that or in a unit of greatswords with a lot of oop miniatures. Like the mordheim ostlanders. Think it could be cool.
Need your help to decide about the shields for my unit. Round or squarish? I think the round might be to big?
-
square, the round not bad but for the bull I think the square looks better
-
I like the round ones, yes they are big but that's the idea. You don't need a lot of space or mobility to fight with a spear in a block. The riveted rim does make it look rather heavy and primitive, maybe?
-
Really hard to say which shield would be more fitting or better looking. The red/white/black colour scheme is strong in itself, and both shields have grandeur and clarity. The question that pops to my mind is if you're going to paint each shield in exactly the same way, or if you plan to vary the b/w division under the red bull. Like quartered fields, lines and/or crosses.
I battled with the shield problem for years (!), all the while playing my spearmen without shields at all. I have now ordered a variety of squearish pavise shields from Perry and Fireforge, and will use these to equip my spearmen. So my personal answer was 'Neither', and I went for a third solution. :icon_cool:
This is a very important decision! Don't rush it. :D
-Z
-
Good job. I like the guy who's leaning back against the barricade
As for the shields; i'd go with the round one
-
Left one :smile2:
-
squarish one
-
Thanks for input guys. Hard to decide which way to go. I like both put think the round look a bit primitive maybe as pointed out.. :biggriin:
So i left the regiment of spearmen for a bit and painted a little canon and crew. Hope you enjoy it. Sorry for bad pictures.
Knock knock who's there? A big as canon
(http://forumbilder.se/H7Q0S/20180818-201625.jpg)
So during my time starting this army I have gone for a more dramatic look. And the topic is something like the last stand. I'm thinking these guys are the only ostlanders left in a besieged town. That way I can mix in a bit of fun miniatures as well, like mordheim once.
-
Looks good, and I like the dramatic composition. It tells a story! :eusa_clap:
The gun carriage is very ad hoc. They probably need to rearrange the gun firing position after each shot.
The defended wall is a great, unifying idea with your Handgunners and Artillery. Do you plan to do more units with this?

Thank you Zygmund! I'm looking for bitz for the canon still. I need the metal things that goes over each side of the canon (name in English?).
Yes that the idea, I found the walls and the unpainted minis so I got the idea. For the canon I built the rest of the barricade on top of the wall. The wall looked like the one for the hangunners first, so a little bit of conversion.
I can show you an idea that still is just that, an early idea for the greatswordunit.
So the idea is to have the greatswords, and some really cool rare minis like the ostlanders from mordheim, bursting out of this ruin they defended for so long.
-
Great stuff - love the greatswords idea.
On the subject of the shields, the square top on does tie in with the shape of the bulls head, - I mean in a sense of triangle shape with the 'point/chin' at the bottom so there is a certain symmetry.
-
I love the defended obstacle theme that you're putting together here. I've done a bit of work including scenery as unit fillers (mostly to help difficult models rank up) but I like this idea of using them to add to the narrative of the army.
-
Looking forward to that Greatsword unit!
Where are the wall pieces from?
-Z
-
Love the artillery piece :::cheers:::
As for shields--not round.

That's the thing, bought them so long ago so I can't remember :eusa_wall:

Thanks! I have also decided on that :)

You put it into words, the thing I really couldn't figure out what i didnt like about the round one. Square it is
(http://forumbilder.se/H7Q40/20180819-201125.jpg)
Boring to paint 12 shields indeed.
-
So I painted the spearmen that I have. Note to self is to line them up before you paint and base them... :eusa_wall: I'm a few spearmen short. Have two extra painted so 4 more will make it 6x4(with fillers) which would be ok for now.
So I give you spearmen of ostland

So i painted a cannon + crew, but as you might have realized I had to make something a bit more dynamic. Hope you like it

Hehe no they are not the best crew in ostland..

I love your theme and paintwork, especially on the cannons. Hope to see some Greatswords soon, they are one of my favourite Empire models and your idea for them sounds great and fluffy.

Thank you Castozor! I'm trying to get a dynamic army. I will try to get the greatswords painted soon  Just going to paint some OOP hangunners first, they are primed and ready!

Finished a unit filler for the upcoming greatswords. Dark pictures, they are taken with a cell..

So made another little progress, 10 out of 14 handgunners painted. I will probably end up doing a little bit of wall-theme for these as well one finished.
Really like the old sculpts, the metal feels nice to paint :icon_wink:
Enjoy:

And a future little project, a really weird unit of random characters from the town, tired of the siege. Going to do some special things to them.

Yes I agree, also nice to just mix in some crazy mordheim miniatures. However they are quite expensive some time :icon_frown:

nicely done. The first picture of the ogre had me a little worried about you going down the Shrek path. But, all is good. Keep it coming!

Hehe I know, first picture was a bit screwed. I tried making the picture better but ended up making it more green ..
-
To echo what everyone else has said. That militia unit is fantastic :eusa_clap:
-
These resin minis are great. Which company made these handgunners?
-
They are actually gw. Think they came like 1992, not sure though since I was just 3 years old ::heretic::
-
^ I think those gunners are from the late 90's. They came with one of the starter sets from about '99-'00 [I think]
-
Aren't there some metals in there too? Either way, the plastic hand gunners were also sold on sprues with spearsmen in a small box as well as the starter kit for 6th edition (Empire vs. Orcs).
-
Yes the front row and 2 from the back are metal once which I think is a bit older?
-
So another artillery piece done. This time its a mortar:

Slooowly getting some painted minis in the box instead of bits and pieces :)
-
So another unit of handgunners, might add a couple of more to it in the future, probably by using some Mordheim Ostlanders.
The bases are to be completed, and the little guy is still WIP and not totally sure he will stay on there.

Thanks bud :)
-
Love your mortar and handgunner unit!
Did the metal mortar carriage have all those nails? Looks really cool. I should have one somewhere, need to dig it out and paint it. :)
This project is getting cooler and cooler as it progresses. What's in the pipeline next?
-Z
-
@zygmund thank you bud! Kind as always.
The old mortar actually had that, but I decided to make them pop a bit, not sure if it works but it looks.. diffetent ::heretic::
Next project besides adding a bit of characters to the handgunners. I will paint what I like to call "the crows" what I mean with that? You will see :engel:
What's up for you next ?
-
that ogre is one of my favorites :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

That ogre is ace. I love the free companish-look that these guys posses.
Thanks bud! I also like it. The old miniatures have something "odd" or funny about them that you really can't put your finger on. I like it !
-
So been awhile, haent been able to paint lately, work and life came in between but today I got some minatures painted. I have decided to add some cavalry to the army. I ended up buying a bunch of old white wolfs (as well as some teugoen guards) I got them for a resonable price and after some selling of excess miniatures (bought a lot more than I looked for, it was a package deal) I ended up getting like 12 Teutogen guards + Ar Ulrik and around 16 White wolf + Grandmaster almost for free.
Here are the first 5 out of either 14 or 18-20 (With fillers).
I like the old look with the barding painted red, but I dont think it will look good with my army so I just made "red touches". Basing not complete

Like the feeling of these classic minis. Somebody's gonna get it - pretty hard too!
-Z
-
classic goodness. love it.
It may be too late now but making the banner quite a bit more wavy would look good. Also, make sure you convert up a musician, can't go to war without one!

Thank you bud! The firm was that way when I bought it, but the paintjob that was done was a challenge to change ....
But I will definitely take your advice on the musician convertion :::cheers:::

Working on a hero of ostland. Will either carry another sword or a bull shield. Get repainted in the ostland colours. Red white and black feathers. And yes he's strong, carries that sword in one hand like it's a knife
-
Very inspiring hero! Love the feathered hat
-
Looks like from a Marius Leitdorf figure, with sun on the breast plate too.

Well thank you sir. I'm trying to complete the ww unit. Think it will look good once complete. :icon_biggrin:

needs more feathers

I have made some progress during the final days of November but haven't been able to upload pictures. The unit if kotww is coming forward. All horses are painted and I have primed the grand master and a converted musician. Also I'm waiting for a movement tray of 7×2 so for now I have it on the huge 10×2. But that makes me want to do 20...but it's a pain to paint horses..

I will have to fillers in the unit of 14. So 12 horses and 2 fillers. I have 4 more ww but without horses so I could increase the unit to 18.
-
Very nice. :::cheers::: When I get around to painting my knights I may have to copy how you did yours.

I made the unit fillers, very fast so it could have been done way better. But anyways here are my dogs:

And who is the owner of the dogs you might ask? Of its this little fellow:

Gonna paint him soon together with the musician.
Cheers

On to the next project ::heretic::
-
Done lovely and like the addition of the wolves! And I sympthize with the painting horses thing.. been a chore mostly for me also.
I like how you changed up the original colors of this unit. Unlike how I did them (the original way seen "here (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=32604.0)" I wanted to say, but I really need to host my older pictures at my blog... as FB messed them up again in my own blog thread)

Yes I did go for the classic look and those pictures are back up on my own blog post here:
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=32604.msg886988#msg886988
-
I really like the look of both ogres in the unit. Those old marauder ogres have so much character.
-
I think the ogres break up the unit too much, especially when in the front rank. If you added a normal guy or two to their bases, it might help. Else, I would keep them in separate units.
-
I think both ogres are great additions to your unit. Do not hesitate to add some dwarfs too :)
-
I think both ogres are great additions to your unit. Do not hesitate to add some dwarfs too :)
Thanks jackel! I actually have thoughts about doing so to, think it will look good. Btw really like your army :::cheers:::
-
Yep, Ogres with character, and couple of dwarfs wouldn't be a bad idea either.
-
So I got a warwagon out of Ebay. The warwagon was in pretty rough condition and prepainted, with a missing back part of the actual wagon. I decided to make a little bit of conversion to it.
My plan as of now is to add the Al-Ulrik to it, his little wagon that he take to battle. Or the alternative is to add "kislev wings" to the back of it, and then a couple of kislev miniatures. :icon_rolleyes:
Here it is:

And a before and after:
-
oh wow looks like a Middenland Alter :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
-
Great conversion! Both of your ideas sound very cool, and I'm sure it's OK to combine them: feathered banners for Al-Ulrik. If need be, you can keep them modular, for example with magnets.
-Z
-
Looks great!
...Do you mean to use a larger base than the 'original' size for the Altar/Wagon, then?
-
Thanks all of you :) it feels good being able to give the wagon a new life. I'm leaning towards adding the feathers with magnets. Should not be to difficult I think. Just need to get the small magnets.
Regarding the base..I think my base is to big I guess? With years I have become more of a painter/collector than a player. Want the army to be somewhat playable but mostly have a nice feel to it. And with time I have gotten an interest in old miniaturures , to add them to bring life to the unit. I have now ordered 3 oop dwarfs to add to the unit of spearmen...money money money ::heretic::
-
With wolfs like that, it deserves a bigger base! :icon_mrgreen:
-
Nice conversion (except the flames maybe). And I vote for the Ulric priest.
-
That war wagon is great

Thank you Sir!
Nice conversion (except the flames maybe). And I vote for the Ulric priest.
Thank you, I'm also leaning towards ulrik so I will paint him and see how it ends up!
Happy holidays people! :::cheers:::

So I have done my last day of painting for 2018, painting the Ar-Ulrik so the warwagon is complete.
