Mammallia Role Playing Game Thread - Players Only.

Mammalia

Sitting on the western coast of the continent, the Kingdom of Mammallia is hemmed in geographically by the Sea of Squids to the west, the Bay of Seals to the north, the Great Desert to the east and the Dark Mountains to the south. Unusually peaceful compared to its neighbours, it is an idealistic blend of the many races that live in harmony, yet it is a powder keg ready to explode.

Made up of six duchies, each ruled by a member of the dominant species of the region. Mammalia in its entirety is ruled over by the elderly Lion King Leopold XI. Nearing fifty he has been the ruler and bedrock for decades, controlling the divergent people with a steady paw and commanding his armies in defending the Kingdom from the harsh outside world. But now, as his mane is a shock of white and he sleeps more, his time is very soon coming to an end. The many royal progeny from his pride are beginning to position themselves for the succession and the heir to the Kingdom Prince Luceifor is considered ill prepared to weather the storm as half a dozen siblings scheme for his demise.

The scenery of Mammalia is green and fertile, farms and forests dominating much of the countryside outside of the few big cities. It's inhabitants are made up of many species, the vast majority being what was once considered prey, but is now considered equal in most regions.

The Royal Domain is ruled directly by the King and draws taxes from all the Duchies. In return it trains and houses the royal armies, dilapidated though they are and sits in judgement for domestic issues. The grand Manecastle is the seat of the Lion house of Greatroar, the sitting royal family, a massive stone masterpiece carved by the finest worksanimals on the continent with a mile wide moat inhabited by the famed Otterguard.

To the very south is the Duchy of Baconopolis. Ironically named by the brutal King Roaran X the Mad a hundred years before. The scene of heavy fighting during the Reign of Scorched Bacon the region took a defiant pride in its terrible name. The ruling Piggly family binding the region together under the yoke of Lion oppression and leading the revolution that overthrew the tyrant. In the present the region retains little of its fierce pride, near twenty years of peace has bred a complacent populace used to peace, truffles and plenty. The majority of the populace are pigs though there is a substantial number of sheep and goats maintained as cheap foreign labour. Baconopolis is an agricultural powerhouse, renowned for its great output compared to most other duchies with only Hareston proving close to its rival. Between them they provide the vast majority of vegetables for the Kingdom. The eating of pig in this region is a huge taboo and punishable by death.

To the south west sits Wooltopia the Duchy of the Sheep. Inhabited by goats and sheep it is the location most clothes are created and famed for its natural beauty. With little industry the region has sporadic houses almost planned at random, with even a few hardy goats raising shacks on the side of the Dark Mountains. Ruled by a Sheep governor the region has little military might and relies on the royal army for protection, though its exceptionally low crime rate leaves it rarely concerned with such matters.

To the west sits Hareston region of the rabbit. Carrot farms dominate the landscape and to outsiders it looks purely like long rolling empty fields, yet below the grass exist entire towns. These burrows have great pathways running between them allowing for rabbits to traverse the entire region without ever going above ground. This shadowy underworld shows little to the outside world and information is not always forthcoming, especially to tax collectors and bureaucrats who have next to no idea what the actual rabbit population or wealth is.

To the north is Meowsville the least productive domain. Ruled by cats it is rarely traversed by the prey species who not unfairly fear the feline hunters who live there. Within the borders hunting is technically illegal but not enforced. It is from this region that many of the fiercest soldiers come, but also  many of the worst for courage is not a consistent skill amongst cats. Many an unprepared general has suffered the sudden flank crash of a demoralised cat army, who suddenly stop caring about the greater good. The cat race is one of the few who can raise wizards, with the eldest cat in each family often having magical power. This could pose a threat but the independent and uncaring nature of felines causes severe disloyalty and the eldest is often assassinated before they can come into power. As the closest relative to the King, the Duke of Meowsville is often involved in politics.

Shelldon the land of turtles is in the north east. Granted acres of land to provide a strong shield against the Seal Kings to the north, the turtles are a fiercely marshal people. Decades of raids by the bands of penguins has meant that manned fortresses now exist across the coast. Strong and tall the turtles are slow to anger but devastating when roused. The region has several massive citadels that house the breeding pits where eggs are guarded. If any of these areas were to fall the turtles would face severe population issues, their slow gestation preventing them from raising many young.

Duke Barklin of Ruff rules the west, protecting against the Hyenas to the east and providing the bulk of the royal armies. From the great city of Barking the region is heavily regulated and loyalty considered the prime trait. The region has not once been involved in rebellion against a King - though it has on the rare occasion dragged its paws when called - answering the call even when it was not in its own interest. As a result it is showered with favours, much to the lament of the other regions.

Outside of the Kingdom of Mammallia there are six powers in their own rights. The Isle of Owls, the Bay of Seals, Monkhead, Hyrula, the shadowy Empire of Bamboo and the Devastation of Ratland. Once dominated by Bats, what is now known as the Devastation of Rats came about due to a sudden and brutal uprising from below. Less than ten years ago thousands upon thousands of rats ascended on the Bats and slaughtered them in droves. With the resources of the region to devour the rat population has exploded and now there are rumours that it has engaged the Empire of Bamboo in war and there are ever more reported sightings of rats coming over the Dark Mountains, whether in aggression or fleeing their own kin is yet to be decided.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our story starts to the south in Truffleton. One of the larger towns in the Duchy of Baconopolis it is not far from the Dark Mountains. Considered the greatest hub in the area it is hosting a regional county fair, the most splendid display of wealth and enjoyment of the year attracting many species and citizens from all over Mammallia. The heroes have journeyed to the town for their own reasons, be it work, pleasure or just happen to be passing through.

The hand painted posters all over the town show that there is a collection of exciting things to do at the fair.

Come one and all to the greatest fair in all of the
land! You’ll find no where more exciting than this!
Just look at the activities to be had!

Boris looks at the posters. "Well friends," he says to the others, in his deep but surprisingly soft voice, "this looks like good, honest entertainment. I'd like to try my arm against the town champion. Then after that, get a pint or two."

Boris is a tall, heavily-built badger. He's wearing a pair of dark red trousers that are old and patched, and has a dagger sheathed at his belt. His axe and greathammer are slung across his backpack, and inside the pack is his armour and his other possessions. He looks a little sleepy in the bright sunlight.

"Mad" Jack Saxton overhears Boris and speaks, "A pint sounds good!  I'll try the archery contest, and then meet ya at Porko Pogloi."

(Shortened to get into the dog's less than communicative nature.)

"Mad" Jack has his light leather armor on, his father taught him to always be prepared.  The armor is a dark brown color and worn over top of his forest green tunic.  Bow is carried in hand, with one arrow in the other, sword sheathed, throwing axe tied under flap of back pack.

Billy woke up in the small patch of shrubbery he had declared his bed the night before. Or the night before that- he honestly had no idea how long he'd been out, and little recollection of what had happened before that. He could vaguely remember two sow twins offering him to show him a good time, and everything beyond that was kind of a blur.

Reluctantly he opened his eyes, the hateful rays of a warm midday sun immediately rewarding him with a splitting headache for his troubles. He needed an ale. Or five. Slowly he sat upright, yawning loudly and scratching himself where his fur was caked with dried mud. So, pretty much everywhere. He noticed a vague hint of bacon on his fur, and with a smile started to remember some specifics about his tryst with the sow twins. Then he looked around, hoping something would remind him of where he-

A tent.

Why was there a tent? The realization that there was a massive tent right in front of him rudely jogged Billy's memory, in that he was very sure there hadn't been one when he had passed out. At the very least those two sows wouldn't have done all those things with any sign of civilization standing right in front of them.

Big thing, too, striped yellow and white. Then he looked around and saw more tents, all of them striped white and some other colour- red, green, blue... The sun reflecting on those bright colours only made his headache worse. He really needed an ale.

Then he remembered- the fair! He was supposed to meet up with Simon! His brother had said something about- no idea, the fog still hadn't fully lifted, but Billy remembered it had seemed important. Or fun, at least. Either way, he had his work cut out for him, strolling the fair's grounds while looking for his brother. There were plenty of other animals around to make doing so a challenge, especially considering all the distractions- heyyy, lionesses- and his throbbing headache. But if he could track those lowlife, backstabbing, swindling, nastly little cottontailed longears back to their burrows and eat their families as just payment for trying to swindle him- not that he really needed a reason to- then just maybe he could find his-

There Simon was, in the distance! Billy started laughing and waving at his relative, walking over to him at a leisurely pace- all he could manage right now, what with his legs still feeling like lead and all. Still, he couldn't believe his luck that he had just stumbled right into Simon on this crowded fair- although truthfully, that was also how he found most of those thieving little rabbits, or at least one that resembled the one he was actually looking for close enough. Thieving little gits all of them, anyway. Making him think of the jumpy little critters made him hungry again. Perhaps he'd make a trip back to Hareston after helping his brother with... Whatever he needed help with. The cottontail police had probably stopped looking for him by now, right?

The largely wooden town is built around a small well. Spread amongst the fields to the north side is a multitude of brightly painted tents with poorly created signs. Generally everything looks to be of mediocre quality, but being out in the border regions you expect that this is actually good for the area.

You can see a big circular area at the very centre of the fair that you assume is the fighting arena, surrounding it are several pigs in old fashioned armour, presumably the town champions. On the east side of the fair is an archery stand and several targets, they've already been used and holes are fairly consistent. It appears to be a timed contest, so several people could win the contest before an overall winner is declared.

To the edge of the archery stand is a big wooden construction with seven wooden chairs. You notice that there are lots of sheep on the stand, presumably this is the sheep sheering competition. It should be ready about 12.45ish from the posters, presumably to avoid drunk contestants with scissors. (It is currently around 11am)

Continuing around the fair there are several vegetable stands offering the usual goods - carrot stew, braised cabbage, mushroom soup in a bread trencher - and a single chicken grilling stand.

After the stands you can see a tube pointing directly down and a maul at the bottom. A pig is stood next to it shouting about his fair game, waving a stuffed rat around. "BASH THE RAT!" he shouts loudly. "Hit the rat as it comes out of the tube and you win a prize!" He has a crowd growing, mostly middle aged people with their disappointed looking children - the slower adults not being able to win.

An muscular pig armourer has set up his stall on the west side, though his gear doesn't look particularly exciting. He does have some nice pieces though. Next to him stands a back cat in a very pointed hat and flowing robes, the sign above him declares him to be a sorcerer. He is waving a wand around and sometimes little sparks of fire appear over the head of those watching.

The last item of note is a bar at the north end. It isn't open yet and all the shutters are down. A sheep and pig are wandering around preparing the area, they look quite busy.

Boris wanders over to the fighting arena, looking at the other stalls as he passes them. He's interested in some of the other things, but he's keen to try the fighting contest first. He approaches the armoured pigs and says, "Good morning, friends. I'd like to fight in the arena. What are the rules?"

The armoured pig oinks dismissively at him and waves another more fancifully dressed gentlepig over with a clank, you can see some rust in his armours joints. The newcomer has a very floppy hat with a lovely red feather sticking out at a jaunty angle, "Ho friend!" he declares enthusiastically. "You must not have been here before! This is a time honoured tradition of Truffleton." he puffs up proudly. "Challengers are to enter the arena and fight one of our noble heroes." he waves his hand over the collective pigs. "It can be a one on one battle, a team event, or a true melee free for all." He lowers his voice dramatically and raises it halfway through the next sentence. "But to be declared the true town champion you have to personally defeat Ser Onkie!" He indicates a well muscled pig waving a blunted broadsword in heavy chops.

Having done the sales speak he suddenly goes more conversational. "All weapons are to be supplied by ourselves, this isn't a fight to the death so the fighters use blunted weapons - do try not to kill anyone. Armour you bring yourself. There are seven members of our heroic force, so you can engage one, or get some friends and fight up to seven, if there's enough people we can arrange a free for all, the crowd loves those! If you beat Ser Onkie or the team you can be called Heroes of Truffleton until the next fair"

'... Heroes of Truffleton...'

That was enough to distract Billy. He turned to the badger and the pig discussing, his eyes wide with excitement. 'Heroics!' he announced. He walked up to the pair, grinning widely. 'Tales of legend! Epic deeds, worthy of song and tale! Such sweet triumph to be gained!' He turns to the shirtless badger, recognizing in the striped animal a comrade in arms.

'Friend badger! I, Billy of the Goats, shall join this melee as well! Be it blade to blade or back to back, glory shall be earned by all! What say you, will it be our weapons which shall meet this day, or shall we lay low our foes together?'

"Aye, I'll join with you in battle, friend," Boris tells Billy, putting a comradely hand on his shoulder. "I wonder if anyone else will join us? A team fight would be a fine thing."

To the pig in the fancy hat, he says, "I'll fight, alongside my friend here. And perhaps some others will join us. I'd like a double-handed weapon of some sort, if that's possible." Boris pauses, scratching his furry chest. "Is there an entry fee?"

Boris unpacks his leather armour (it smells of damp earth) and straps it on. He waits to see if anyone else wants to join in the fight!

"A Tourney's just the thing to hone our skills and raise the morale of the peasantry, i'nt that right" a small voice squeaks below the larger animals. "Humphrey Cadogan will lend his spear to your quest, my fellow noblebeasts".
Humphrey stands infront of the armoured pigs, brandishing his shield in his paw, A bright red jerkin fastened tightly around his tiny chest as he adjusts his red and yellow beret.

"Mad" Jack sees the fightin' as fightin', and not his best gig, and begins his walk over to the archery contest.  He looks over his shoulder and sees a goat and a mouse join up with Boris, and that stops Jack in his tracks.  From a distance he sees the team forming, and thinks that maybe this might be a good thing to do if he can help them best the local team of pigs ... hmmm ... maybe if he finds the runt of the litter, so to speak, it might be ok after all.  He keeps moving over to the archery contest, looks for the one who might be running the target event, and knowing that it is around 11am Jack asks, "When does the archery contest begin?"

The pig who was asked looks at "Mad" Jack and says, "Didn't ya read the promo material, the archery contest is running all day."

"Okie, dokie, thanks dude!", and "Mad" Jack goes scampering back towards Boris the badger and his friends ...

"Hey, wait for me, I'll join ya, as long as I can fight the smallest one, of course.  One for all, and all for one!"

He slings his bow on his back and puts away the arrow, and waits to be assigned a weapon.

Simon trudges along sourly behind his older brother, Billy. Always the optimist was Billy, and noble and just and worthy and it just made Simon sick. Billy also happened to be the favorite of their parents, and the one they trusted most to send out to retrieve their wayward son. Still, Billy was family, and even if he did not particularly like him, Simon still felt obligated to stand by him in this champion tournament thing that was going on. Plus, a fair meant opportunity.
Perhaps he could find a drunk merchant and relieve him of the burden of a fat purse, or "help" him to his inn and there plunder at leisure while the drunk slept off his head of ale. He'd deserve it of course, any rich man fool enough to get too drunk to be reasonable really would have all of his things stolen anyway. It might as well go to Simon, who really needed it, and not some more common thief. Simon had always had to beg, borrow, lie, and engage in kleptic deeds to get what he deserved, rather than it being handed to him like his siblings, especially Billy. Billy had an easy time of everything.
Simon winced again as Billy spouted another line about how heroic he was and how great everything seemed. He spit at the feet of a startled rabbit, and smiled a little at the look of disgust that bloomed in the woman's face. At least she could be as miserable as he, if only for a second. The smile faded and he trudged on, wondering if anyone in the world could possibly be as unlucky as he on this day.

After a bit of a scowl at Billy when he suggests inter species love, clearly he doesn't think much of it.  Still, the well dressed pig puffs up in excitement, he waves to a young assistant with a very slight nod to grab some weapons for you all and goes off to rile the crowd. You can hear him announcing to the spectators and you instead concentrate on the youngling. He grabs some well worn tourney weapons and hands an appropriate item to you all.

Boris - A big blunt maul.
Humphrey - A blunted spear.
Simon - A tourney short sword.
Billy - A small chipped axe. (It looks especially poor)
Jack - A tourney short sword.

After you spend some time putting your armour and gear on the pigs open the gates to the muddy arena. At the other end of the field you can see five pigs dressed in mismatched gear enter through an identical gate. Three are armed with swords, one with a axe and Ser Onkie has his large broadsword. If you look around you can see a considerable crowd has gathered around the edge of the fight chanting for the locals. They eventually quiet down as the announcer steps up. "Friends!" he shouts in his best loud voice. "We are here to see our heroic champions defend Truffletons honour!" the crowd cheer. "As is traditional, we begin with the competitors one on one, but then it is fair game! Let us cheer for victory against these fearsome challengers!" he waves his hand over the group. "Now, let's give them a big cheer... begin!" he shouts and slams his fat arm down.

Initiative:
Ser Onkie (15) -               Paired with Boris
Simon (14) -                    Paired with Truffleton Hero 2
Truffleton Hero 2 (Sword - 13)
Billy (12) -                       Paired with Truffleton Hero 3
Humphrey (11) -              Paired with Truffleton Hero 1
Jack (11) -                       Paired with Truffleton Hero 4
Truffleton Hero 4 (Sword - 10)
Boris (7)
Truffleton Hero 3 (Axe - 6)
Truffleton Hero 1 (Sword - 3 - Critical fail)

With a great shout the competitors charge towards each other clearly aiming for a single opponent. With sort of snorty roar Ser Onkie raises his massive broadsword and barrels forward towards Boris. When he gets in range he throws his weight behind a blow aimed at Boris's body. [13 attack - hit] Boris tries to block but he doesn't quite raise his sword in time and grunts as the sword hits him, [Roll for damage = 5 - 4 armour = 1 damage = 31 Health] but it doesn't do much damage.

Simon charges his own opponent and tries a quick strike. [12 Attack - hit] With a cut he hits the pig on the shoulder [damage roll 4 - 3 armour = 1 damage] and the pig grunts in pain but holds onto his sword in a comical fashion and swipes back at you. [17 attack - hit] and hits you straight in the chest winding you. [damage roll = 5 - 3 armour = 2 damage. 26 health)

With a flourish Billy hacks at his opponent with his poor axe. [9 Attack = miss] but his opponent ducks out of the way.

As he charges forward Humphrey watches as the pig he is to fight falls over in the mud and smacks his head on a rock on the floor. [Critical fail = damage roll = 6 damage] Before the comical pig can recover Humphrey lithely runs forward and swings with his little mouse muscles at the prone pigs head. [Attack role = 15 + 1 prone + [3 Stunt roll]= hit] He absolutely wallops the poor bugger in the face with the butt of his spear, [damage roll = 7 - 3 = 4] causing a huge ringing noise. Not finished he pulls his spear back for another strike [3 stunt points, lightning strike 2nd attack. Attack roll = 18 = hit] and clatters him again. [damage roll = 9 - 3 armour = 6. Pig defeated] The pig doesn't stir and is perfectly still for a few seconds before his armour starts to move up and down. He's probably going to live, but he's definitely going to have a headache.

Jack stabs his sword at the pig facing him. [16 = attack = hit] and hits him between the armour plates. [damage roll 2 - 3 = -1] but the pig barely feels it and has to face an attack himself. [8 = attack = miss] but easily avoids it.

Recovering from the blow from Ser Onkie, Boris gathers his strength and throws it behind a strike [13 attack = hit] that hits the 'knight' full in the chest. [damage roll = 13 - 3 = 10] Ser Onkie gasps at the unexpected power in the blow and drops to one knee, but he recovers quickly ready for the next strike.

Billys pig barrels into him and swipes down impressively [17 attack = hit] his axe bits into the armour and Billy can tell he'll have a big bruise later under his fir. [damage roll = 7 - 3 = 4 = 32 health

Round over.

Boris (7)
Truffleton Hero 3 (Axe - 6)
Truffleton Hero 1 (Sword - 3 - Critical fail)

Recovering from Boris's telling blow Ser Onkie tries an uppercut swing. [13 attack = hit] and manages to give him a glancing blow to the arm. (damage roll = 10 - 4 = 6 [24 health])

Simon takes a deep breath and slams his sword down at his pigs head. [11 attack = hit] The sword knocks into the pigs snout and he reels back [damage roll 8 - 3 = 5] He desperately strikes back [11 attack = miss] but hits nothing but air.

Ignoring his prior miss Billy swings again. (4 attack = miss) Seeing Billy struggle Humphrey attacks Truffletons hero from behind [14 + 3 from behind = 17 = hit.] and delivers a strong blow to his ribs. [damage roll = 6 - 3 armour = 3]

Dodging the blow Jack has another swing at the gap between armour plates. [14 attack +6 stunt points] The blow connects savagely and the pig squeals in agony. [damage roll = 8 + 2D6 lethal blow = 12 - 3 = 17] He grabs his armpit and squeals on the floor rolling. Pig defeated.

Furious at the blow Ser Onkie dealt him Boris swipes his mace at him. [attack roll 20! = hit] he strikes him full on the helmet. [damage roll = 12-3 = 9] Ser Onkie goes down hard to the floor and you can see some of what were once his teeth on the floor. He spits he remainder out and lies on the floor in a heap.

The pig fighting Billy and Humphrey panics and tries to strike Humphrey at his rear. [11 attack = miss]

Round over.

Initiative:
Ser Onkie (15) -               Paired with Boris
Simon (14) -                    Paired with Truffleton Hero 2
Truffleton Hero 2 (Sword - 13)
Billy (12) -                       Paired with Truffleton Hero 3
Humphrey (11) -              Paired with Truffleton Hero 1
Jack (11) -                       Paired with Truffleton Hero 4
Truffleton Hero 4 (Sword - 10)
Boris (7)
Truffleton Hero 3 (Axe - 6)
Truffleton Hero 1 (Sword - 3 - Critical fail)

As Ser Onkie crumples to the floor his remaining companions begin to look worried. Simon presses the attack whilst his opponent is distracted. [10 attack = miss] but fails to connect. The pig swipes back but misses by a hairs breadth. [12 attack = miss]

Billy takes advantage of the distraction Humphrey provides. [15 attack = hits] Delivering a chop to the pigs back he finally delivers a telling blow! [damage roll 15-3 = 12] The pig grabs his back and falls to the floor shouting "Yield!"

Humphrey watches the pig fall and instead seeks out the last remaining hero and pokes at him. [8 attack + 2 for outnumbering 5 to 1 = miss] Jack follows and also tries to finish him off. [15 attack [+19 Stunt points] = hit] he delivers another massive hit to the back of the pigs legs. [9 + 2D6 + 4 = 13] The pigs legs buckle under the blow and he falls to the mud, down for the fight.

The crowd seem to suddenly forget who they were cheering for and instead scream loudly for the challengers! The pig announcer shouts over the noise. "Our noble heroes are vanquished! But do not despair gentle folk! We will have some new heroes for the next year!"

Billy lets out a war-bleat at the top of his lungs, revelling in the spectators' cheers. He thumps his chest with one fist and grabs Humphrey's wrist with his free hand, raising it high in a victor's salute!

'My thanks, friend mouse! Were it not for your aid, I would be lying in the dirt beside our foes! Tonight, I shall raise a cup to your bravery!'

As his battle-rage wears off, Boris is initially excited by the cheers of the crowd. But then he looks at the fallen Ser Onkie, and feels remorseful. Did he really have to hit him so hard? This wasn't a real fight, after all. He puts down the maul and goes over to Ser Onkie. "Apologies, friend," he tells him, "you fought bravely." He tries to help Ser Onkie up, assuming the pig is fit enough to stand.

Ser Onkle lifts his head from the mud and spits out his broken shards of teeth and plenty of blood. He scowls at your words. "curdse ydo baddger" he says with poor annunciation. "ill madke ydou sworry" you can see he is I'm agony but he limps off holding his face.

Boris sighs a little at Ser Onkie's response. He doesn't blame him for being angry. Still, arena fighting is a rough sport, and these things happen. He returns to his fellow fighters and says, "Well done, friends! You all fought valiantly."

Billy agrees with a smile. 'A rousing battle! The songs of our daring sung at tonight's bonfire are well-earned! To you too, I shall raise a tankard, for bringing low the biggest of the boars!'

The crowd starts to leave now the competition and the eventually the foppish pig waves them out hinting that they should leave the arena. Several younger pigs hop the wall and start to collect the beaten up heroes, it takes four of them to lift the unconscious one out and they are still struggling.

You leave the pit and head back out to the fair. It's about 12 now, and several members of the crowd clap you on the back as you walk past.

After leaving the arena, Boris removes his armour and packs it away again. Since the beer tent isn't open yet, he wanders across to watch the cat wizard. He's curious to see what sorts of magic tricks he can do.
