A Hotch Potch of Halflings
« on: December 11, 2017, 10:54:46 PM »
Now I have finally, fully repaired my campaign thread on my new web site (https://bigsmallworlds.com/) which involved re-writing masses of text and reposting 1000 images, I am back to painting and modelling and (to my players' relief) my GM duties!

Here are a variety of halfings I have completed just today who will serve in the forces of the (NPC) city state of Verezzo, if, that is, the players actions cause that particular state to go to war, if only to defend itself. (I dread the thought that these, and another 100 new figures recently completed, might never end up in a battle!)

First the classic GW models:

I have never painted any of these models before. I think they ended up in my box of figures from a gift-lot I was given by an old player. When I found them it spurred to to order the following ...

Here are the two kinds of halfings available from Black Tree Design's ranges:

(These are small, even for halflings!)

I like them both, but do wish the little guys were a bit bigger. I'll keep them as one unit.

Here are the two Midlam ones I have (almost) completed so far:

These I love. I have several more civilian/character types I hope to paint if the campaign stories are conducive!

Here are the Grenadier / Forlorn Hope Games ones ... I am confused as to who I got them from as both seem to sell the same ...

And the brigade altogether ...

Blue and red regiment (the flag border's colours). The flag is a version of the Italian Cerignol flag.

Gonna build a story around these for the latest report.

I think the Forlorn Hope ones are the old Copplestone sculpts - so Gary acquired them at some stage.

I have them, and the new ones that North Star sell on Copplestone's behalf are nice too.

According to the lists we use, based on the Treachery and Greed campaign lists, they are quite good little archers - with bows, not short bows as I would have thought. I suppose a bow to them is like a longbow to us! I have a moderately weighted longbow and ... respect to those who can actually use them!

The Treachery and Greed lists are great!  I have each one and look forward to using them again.

Are those from Black Tree not the old Harlequin models?
I use those little buggers as young halflings in my Mordheim warband.

Could be? You mean the little ones (from their Men of Averaign collection) or the bigger ones (HM1288 - Halfling Archers of Greenwood)?

The smallest halflings definitely were sold by Black Tree Design until lately. They're likely old Harlequin, like many BTD ranges.

Yeah, checked Google images for 'Harlequin Halflings' and they popped up in droves.

Indeed the ones form Men of Averaign collection.
Lovely models, only very tiny in comparison with GW.

If you want to see them in their 'natural environment', here's a picture ...

Thanks. No conversions this time, though. I just stood the models behind the table and used basic MS-Paint to paint out their bows so that they would look like they were sat at the table. The feller with the tankard is modeled that way.

So no conversions, but arrangement.

The house - is it meant for 15/20mm, or just far away?

It is good for a hobbit's house, eh? It is actually one of many charity shop buys over the years, slightly tarted up and rarely (if ever) used before but I realised it finally had a reason for existing.

Wait til you hear the strange story of what the archery butts were made from.

Have you tried what it looks like to mix halflings from different manufacturers in the same unit? If the differences are small enough to pass as individual differences in halfling physiology, doing so might give your force a more uniform appearance.
