Use of Inks, Washes, And Foundation Paints for a Nuln Army
« on: August 05, 2010, 07:13:41 AM »
Dear Forum.

I'm in the process of Painting my Nuln army up, and currently I only use The Standard GW paints.  Looking at the fantastic work put in some of the models on the site, and reading their posts, I am curious as to how I could use inks, Washes, and foundation paints to improve my quality of work.  I always put a layer of Chaos Black over the primer before I paint the model, so I'm not sure what I could use for foundation.  I am particularly confused as to how I could us an ink on a mostly black colored model.  Also, while the majority of my army is Nuln, what kind of Inks or foundation paints could i use for wissenland troops?  I am planning on having some Wissenland colored units to back up the Nulnites...

All help greatly appreciated,
Johann

I find it hard to get any particular dept into black. Since it canīt be shaded (if you do not go for a dark grey as a base instead), it tend to end up quite flat. Black is very quick thou and gives you more time to focus on the parts that are coloured differently, such as skin, feathers, weapons etc.. Also try to go for a quite light grey for that highligt to make it stand out.

Here are a couple of Ostlanders with clothes painted black. I gave it a single highlight and focused more on the other parts. Like you, I go over the model with chaos black after priming it black.

When all base colours was painted on these I washed the entire models with devlan mud. After that I started highlighting.

Good luck!

One advantage to inks when painting black is to tint them.  There are tons of 'black' things which pull towards one color or another.  A little bit of blue ink, in particular, can add some color depth to a black paint job and, in my opinion, goes further than a typical grey highlight.  Even so, Wolfenbaum's paint looks great and the ability to focus on other aspects of a model will quickly overshadow (no pun intended) a largely black, crisply highlighted model.  When I look at thos handgunners, for example, I'm immediatelydarawn to the face and that striped leg.

The foundations might help some of those other colors to establish a cleaner base than, say, fleshtone or white on black.  Otherwise, sticking to your normal paints and tossing on the occassional ink might cover you.  Don't forget you can ink your other colors, too.
