I'll be convinced that the IG can win with anything other than their maximum 9 tanks of various types when they actually do so.  Too good a build not to use them.  After that everything else is gravy anyway.

Din, come to the Ork thread and convince me Gretchin are worth using.  I just bought 20 of them.

Philly, I've done so.

By the way, you can't actually fit 9 tanks into a 1500 point list.

9 tanks without sponsons and stuff that it. The cheapest ones possible.

There is no objective holding potential. Going to get f-ing raped by outflanking lascannons and such.

Oh, and no one else can do Air Cav

Tau Devilfish, Hammerheads and Pirahnas?
Eldar Wave Serpents, Falcons, Fire Prisms, Vypers and Jetbikes?

I was under the impression Tau and Eldar armies stuffed with those were designated as 'Air Cavalry'...

So those can imitate Helicopters?

I'm talking Valks here Meighrrick.

None of those larger vehicles are fast skimmers that can carry troops.

Tanks aren't allowed. Air Cavalry refers to a specific unit formation during the Vietnam War.

I guess we agree to disagree then.

Oh, and no one else can do Air Cav, or an Artillery Company.

Eldar and orks.

I don't think Eldar can, quite as well. Falcons =/= Fast Skimmers.

I guess Orks can do an Arty Company, but they can't take them in the pure numbers IG can...

EDIT: Ok, my memory is faulty. They are fast. All the same, no rocket pods and heavy machine guns on em, and you can't take as many...

Have you ever played against a Swooping Hawks yoyo army?  There's a loophole in their rules that they can pop in, pop out on the same turn.  (last FAQ I saw did not remove it)  Add the phoenix lord for them, and the few right builds for other HQ and if you are cheese worthy they are NEVER on the board for you to shoot at.  But they always swoop in, destroy any target on the board and leave.  Add Jetbike support and you have an army that will almost never be in sight but killing everything.  If you want something heavier add the other tanks.

If you want all tank, Eldar and Tau and Ork can do it as well.  Might not look the same, but it is done.

Sorry, but IG have no unique builds

I warned my Eldar friend not to go cheesy on me a long time ago. Luckily, he likes Dire Avengers, Guardians, and Wraithguard...

Really now?

Can anyone else do Penal Company? I'm not so certain that Imperial Guard have *no* unique builds. Being able to imitate a Tank company =/= a tank company. There are many things that make Imperial Guard unique in their own right.

And to refer back to a different post, who precisely can do tanks better, infantry waves (not orks here, they simply can't take as many), cavalry, Airborne, better?

Have you even played against the new book?

EDIT: Changed because I posted in slightly annoyed mood for unrelated reasons, and felt that I was unnecessarily harsh and insulting, not to mention that it might have seemed as if I was overly involved emotionally with my army. I apologize to anyone who read it.

T0978149081234, you are grasping.  Ork vehicle armies are fast, AND they can take heavy machine guns (big shootas = S5 AP5 Assault 3) and rokkits (twin linked in most cases).

As for air cavalry, what exactly do IG troops do when they get dropped somewhere away from tanks?  Oh yeah, they die.

As for 9 tanks, thats at 2000 points.  Nobody plays 1500 once they put on the big boy pants.  After all, you aren't playing 0k until you hit 2500.

I'll have 10000 points of orks by the summers end.

:D

Philly, I've only been playing <2000 because that's what the tournaments around here are. Before that I did play 2k.

I'm getting there. Lessee... 2000 points of Baneblade... another 1000 of Stormlord/Shadowsword... 3000 of troops...

A good 1000-1500 points more once I order the stuff I want to...

And about getting dropped away from tanks... not necessarily. Camo cloaks/carapace armor. And you can drop smartly.

Yeah, I find the best 40K games are in the 1700-1900 range.  Big enough to field fun stuff, but not so large to be unwieldly.

Plus I still think v.large games of 40k are just so random that it loses something.

T, sorry if I sounded dismissive.  I know you like your army, I can understand that.  I do think it takes a special kind of person to play IG, I can't take that kind of pain.

I like the IG, who wouldn't?  All those tanks are a blast.  The issue is that regardless of the interesting ideas, there are only a few tried and ture great builds, and airdrop troopers aren't one.

Carapace armor is nothing special.  Most armies ahve answers for space marine armor, and AS3 is far harder to crack than AS4.  I have never really liked camo cloaks or other stealth items.  The range is still more than close enough for small arms to get most of the units in question.

How is 9 tanks a tried and true build, when it wasn't possible until this book...?

Wasn't it possible with the idiotic armoured company which many people "surprised" players with to try get easy wins without needing to think too hard?

I wouldn't mind as long as I had forward warning (so I could break out the anti-tank stuff...), but in just a regular game when you just know you are facing "Imperial Guard"...

No. Just no.

It isn't bad in the current book.  And yes, I was referring to the fact that the more tanks you add, the better IG does.  9 being the max would imply 9 being the best build.

The balancing thing with the current book is that the tanks must form squadrons, which means immobalizing hits will wreck them.

No. Just no.

As I recall, everytime it was "Hey, want to play next week, I'll bring IG?", no mention of out of codex stuff.

He brings max tanks and 2 bloody thunderbolts.
