How did you gave these bows strings? My own archers are the next unit to be painted. And they look very cool with these strings

Hey lads, thanks some more, I'll try to update next week with some cool WIPs (Flagellants and my Jeagercorps)

Frank_91: It's normal sowing wire (black) which I glued to the top of the bow with superglue. I spun it a couple of times around the bows top and waited to it to dry. Then I pulled the strings (past the arrows, with a small dot of superglue there) and finally back to the bow where I spun it again some times around the bow and attached it with superglue.

Originally I had drilled some holes in the bows to pull the wire through, but that doesn't work, too much of a problem to get everything into place that way. So basicly: sowingwire (any colour you'd like) and superglue are the ingredients. And then a lot of patience, more patience and angermanagement, because sometimes the strings just will not work (or you get glue to your fingers and pick up the model and the wire lets loose again, oh the problems I faced  ::heretic::)

Sounds easy!

I'll give it a try. Do you reckon Greenstuff could do?

Hmm, greenstuff is much harder I suppose. And getting a nice even string is almost impossible that way. Also for attaching them to the bow, chances are fairly big that you'll end up with a big blob of greenstuff on the end of the bow. So I'd say, go for normal wire.

For bow strings you could try the melted sprue method.

Carefully heat up a piece of old sprue (long enough to hold at each end over a low flame) in the middle, (carefull not to let it catch fire or burn/blacken) and pull it apart gently. With a bit of practice you can get some very fine pieces of wire-like plastic that can just be glued in place. Indeal if your using plastic figures. It's an old trick from AFV kit making circles.

Y'know, hochlands red and green is very difficult to pull off, but you've done a beautiful job of it.  Best hochland army I've yet seen.  And your banner work is top notch.   :::cheers:::

Another bowstring idea is either a very fine metal rod/wire. Brass, copper, or steel florist wire. This has the advantage of being fairly rigid while you glue it in place, but not as fragile as the melted sprue method.

I'm actually not too fond of bowstrings on models, though.

Yes, more updates. This time of some WIP units, so sit back and take a look.

1 The last independent unit of Handgunners (3/3)

2 Wizard Lord (Lore of Life). A bit shiny, but that's because of the Battle for Macragge paint which I used for the base :(

3 A unit of Knights of the Silver Mountain, a Hochland native order (non inner-circle)

4 Knights of the White Wolf

5 The banner is not yet finished but will feature lots of 'White Wolf' and Ulric features

6 The Flaggellants will also be present

7 And last but not least, the unit I've been bragging for some time now. My unit of Hochland only scouts: My Jeagercorps. There are some tiny bits I still have to do (add some barrel-ends to some brass rods) add some greenstuff to the bases and then start painting them up.

I haven't got any WIP pics of the Jeagercorps. They were done during a time when I had no camera (except the very crappy one in my phone). But I could tell a bit in ordinary text, like in the old days ;)

The models have been made from ordinary plastics, with a lot of shaving to get better more dynamic poses. The bits themselves come from almost every plastic set GW has produced for the Empire. I've used legs from the Soldiers of the Empire box, Militia box and from the last range (both the ranged and closecombat boxes) On that I stuk torsos from different sets, but I tried to avoid bits with too much armour as that would be too much of a problem for scouting units operating deep in the forest, and need speed, silence and cunning. Not massive protective plates that only happer your movement. To get the models guns in the right position you need to do quite a lot of cutting of the joints between the legs and torso, the legs have been post for 'fighting moves' not shooting or skirmisch, stalkish walking moves.

Now for the guns, you could buy 10 boxes of handgunner/crossbow units, but... this would cost you a serious load of money... You could also make your own guns. Now, the guns form the new set are best for this. So get all the guns you can hold of. And check them for usage. They should either be shooting or resting it, or the loose ones that you can stick on the back of your models, while they are toting their other guns and weapons. You could also use the crossbow pieces (I tried this method first but I like the gun conversion better)

Now you need to get the 'action feel' or the shooting feel. For both have their merids, first check what the legs look try some bits out, which one shows 'action' and which one shows 'shooting' best. Also if it looks cool but it does not fit, don't be afraid to shave of bits to try if it looks better. You probably have enough of the same bit to mess it up once (or twice, or trice....)

Now get the brass rod ready for action. First cut of the tip of the gun, now drill a hole the size of your rod (this should be a bit smaller then the normal plastic barrel of course) and glue a piece of rod into it. Now drill a hole in the back of the cut of end of the barrel on the 'wrong side' and glue this piece to the brass rod. Now you have given it a proper gunbarrel look. If you like you could also drill a small hole in the real barrel end like I've done.

Now get the grim, veteran look heads out, again I used bits from all boxes. Ones I liked and thought gave the specific model the 'right look' Finally it's detailing. The all need powder bags or something like that, as they are using gunpowder weapons. Beside that be moderate with the extras. They are all champions, but not freight donkeys. I added a handweapon here, an armourplate there, a waterbottle somewhere else and of course capes, for camouflage...

i did notice though that one of the jaegercorps is aiming down his sight, but he has an eye-patch on his right eye.  :icon_lol: kinda makes you wonder how he aims. does he still close his left eye? lol

it obviously is not an eye patch, rather I would think of it as a magnifying monocle designed by a nuln engineer for a sharpshooter.  :icon_cool: steveb

Haha, you are right Hector. But not always you get the heads you want... I indeed have to paint it as a kind of monoculair or something like that and everything will come out just OK...
------------------

Sorry, but I got so busy yesterday that I couldn't post the latest updates. But you will see the minis very soon. I might even toss in the WIP steamtank I got. Unfortunately there hasn't been much progress in that mini lately. Too busy painting and assembling Eldar and O&G minis for my other many armies.

Those Jaegers are fantastic conversions - I may have to steal the idea for the future!
Let's see them painted up  :biggriin:
I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness
Nor the arrow for its swiftness
Nor the Warrior for his glory
I love the homeland which they defend.

Yeah, DT down is not fun :( I might have to get on MSN once again to see Da Skorpion again, I still have some of his Orkses laying around, waiting to be painted. And here to post the progress (although small) on my Hochland army. But to be honest, I got sick of painting all the green (My High Elves are Pale Yellow/Green, then I paint Orkses, my Eldar are green...)

But painting goes slow now, as it takes a lot of my energy (I have to get glasses) to solve that problem and they will not arrive until the 25th of this month. But still I paint (I just finished a unit of 4 trolls and some other O&G stuff for my brothers army I own these days and am now working on some Spider Riders)

Btw, soon a new topic will start in which I will tell about my new project: Nuln, and another project on Middenheim :-) So be prepaired for some cool assembling/painting topics here :)

Well, finally updates :) Not the best photo quality but it'll have to do. Like I said, most work recently was on other armies but my Hochland project is never far away (and the minis on the desk remind me everyday to continue the projects)

So what was going on? Well first I continued my Knights of the Silver Mountain, after these two units and the grandmaster are finished I have my first complete knightly order. This means that I will have 10 innercirlce knights, and two units of 6 vanilla knights. And of course the Grandmaster himself. Although the units are not finished yet there is quite a lot of progress in the units as you can see. And they could be counted as 'gaming ready' as all the basecolours have been applied (save some of the smaller detailing) The Grandmaster on the other hand still needs a bit of tender, love and care before I want to field him in battle.

Unit one of the Knights of the Silver Mountain. This unit is a tad more completed then the other. Most horses are finished and many of the base coulours have been highlighted. The bases of course need some staticgrass and shrubs but that's just a little bit of work, and as that is completed quite quickly this is most fun :) Note that the shields still need a freehand (that you can see in the image of my completed unit of Inner Circle knights.

The 2nd unit of the Knights of the Silver Mountain

The Grandmaster is quite a long project. He basicly is a General of the Empire that I have converted a bit to make him fit with the knights. This means that I've used some other bits to make him a bit more heroic (I find the normal model quite static) I've used the 'helmet carrying arm' from the Knights of the Empire set and the helmetless head from the normal General of the Empire set. Then I cut the body into two parts and used another piece from the Knights set, one of the armoured torsos as these fitted a Grandmaster better then the normal one attached to the legs. I slightly repositioned this torse so there is a bit more movement in the model and finally attached the normal lance toting arm, as this lance is just too cool to be left untouched. Last small conversion was to cut of the hammer wielding skellie cresent on the horse. I could not find that fitting in a hunting province like Hochland, so I replaced that one with the cresent of an old 5th edition Bretonnian knight. Much better I think...

Well I'll try to keep you all updated, on the further progress in this army. But first, I need to clear the room here and start studying for my exams next week... (this is quite hard as I need glasses but they will not arrive until next week :()
