demolition
« on: January 05, 2011, 04:44:35 AM »
We were playing the watchtower mission and my opponent brought down the tower with his screaming bell. After about 20 frustrating minutes of searching through the rule books (we each had one) we gave up trying to find out what happens to the 20 swords inside and just house ruled it as 2d6 str6 hits and put the unit 1" away outside the ruins.
What is the rule for building demolition? And where the hell is it?

There are no rules for building destruction in the BRB.

IIRC, there is in the Skaven book that overrides the BRB.

Skaven have 2 ways of destroying buildings, the bell and the spell Cracks Call.

"HahaHA! I hold the tower!"

Well as there is no damage on the screaming bell chart the swordsmen leave the ship...tower like rats...before it crumbles. With cracks call I think you take an I test or take a wound (or die)

for victory conditions there is an brb errate I think the one closest to the rubble wins.

It's silly that only skaven can destroy buildings.

Either everyone should be able to, or no one.

Nobody gnaws on wooden beams like rats.

Except woodworms and termites, of course. But I don't know whether a woodworm army would be that interesting. A termite army would be okay though. But we already have the Tyranids in 40k.

Nope, only the Skaven know the secret to that dark art.

All over the Empire and Tilea, cities are full of unwanted buildings, stuck in place due to the lack of the forbidden knowledge of building demolition. In Bretonnia buildings are actually illegal. No telling what would happen if that indestructible power got into the wrong hands.

I can't believe there is no rule for blowing buildings up. That seems a little ridiculous seeing as we have all the tools for the job, cannons, rockets, even engineers if you feel like a controlled explosion.
With cracks call I think you take an I test or take a wound (or die)

Every model? That seems suitably severe.
And now that I think about it, that might be the reason no one but the rats can demo anything. No one would ever garrison a building if all it took to kill half the unit was dropping a cannon ball or a catapult shot through the roof.

There are some supplemental rules for destroying buildings in the rulebook, just not in the main rules section - check out the scenario Raze & Ruin, on page 399.

As Fandir said, the official FAQ has this;

Quote
Q. If the watchtower is destroyed in the Watchtower scenario, what
victory conditions are used? (p150)

A: The closest unit to the centre of the rubble where the
watchtower once stood is the winner.

There might be helpful ideas for dealing with Skaven-destroyed buildings, like units inside taking 2D6 S4 hits, but otherwise assuming that buildings cannot be destroyed except by those Skaven machines.

Well, that's GW for you. Rules that existed in previous editions get lost in the mists of time. You can see that parallel in their games -- that's how we ended up with a stagnant tech universe in 40k - people keep forgetting things every 10 minutes or so. In FB why do you think the High Elves, who had a gigantic tech head start over mankind, haven't invented crap in thousands of years? I'll tell ya -- shoddy memories and non-archival paper.
Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounding yourself with assholes.

They can't cut down trees to make paper to keep records, that would upset the balance of the world that keeps the Daemon Gate in check!
