Title: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Love is in the Air
Post by: JAK on February 21, 2016, 09:36:51 AM
This group/army may or may not materialise – as you know I’ve not done much in the past year or more and back then I had been thinking about rebasing the whole of what I had completed of my Discworld army.

With many of the units being from the city of Ankh-Morpork I was considering rebasing them into a more urban/street setting when along came AoS. Although I don’t play the game I have used the rules to ensure that the units I have created are in theory legal from a gaming point of view. When they introduced AoS, GW rewrote the rules of all their existing armies so most of the units I’ve created still remain legal, although a few will need a weapon change or two to the warscrolls – but that can wait. The main advantage to me of AoS is the lifting of base size restrictions.

I have got used to 28-30mm scale figures and don’t want to go to anything larger as this would mean starting again from scratch. (The way the current trend appears to be going we’ll soon be back to the traditional toy soldier scale of 54mm like HG Wells used when he started the hobby (please start a new thread in the correct part of the Forum if you disagree with this statement :icon_biggrin:)).

I have no intention of moving to GW’s preferred 32mm base as traditional fantasy figures fit nicely on 25mm round ones. The little bit of extra space will assist conversions and hopefully avoid the problems trying to rank a unit up.  I also intend to use movement trays even if only for display purposes and at present am looking into the alternatives that are available online, as cutting circles is not something I’m any good at.

For the army itself I have a list of 76 named ‘characters’ from the books who were actually part of or have a very strong connection with the City Watch which at the rate I usually build and paint should be 5-6 years’ work. However I have a base figure for all but 12 of the characters, some were built for other projects and just need a repaint; some need adjustments due to comments in later books, including a sex and a species change; and most of the others have all the parts ready to be built, so it will still take some time.

This is where I’m currently at, and I wouldn’t normally have posted yet – particularly as there is still a chance that I’ll not even get started – but a number of events in the past week have made me take the plunge. I have just started a figure for a painting competition at a local GW store who are also about to start a mini army painting competition between now and June. This basically involves building and painting a leader and two units. As the Watch is a mixture of species, mostly humans and dwarfs a unit of 10 of each and a Captain should be acceptable and doable. If I also join Booah’s fortnightly figure campaign I can set myself a number of targets so that things do actually get finished.

The Painting Comp. is next weekend and their first target date for the Army is to finish the leader by the 26th March so I have some form of incentive to get started.

I have the motivation so if time and circumstances allow there will hopefully be an update before the end of March.

Great news JAK! I'm glad you're getting back into the hobby.

I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett, and I think the humour you put into your models is a great testament to him and his work. The City Watch books are probably my favourite, so I'm really excited to see how this progresses, and who you include!

I made my own Sam Vimes a while back for use in Mordheim - he's over on my plog, but I've no doubt yours will be more in keeping with the fiction.

Mightmatt – So am I and I hope I can continue to do so – as I don’t expect to have the same problems as last year.

There should be 76 figures at the end so hopefully there will be a few you recognise – I work very slowly and even if I can keep to Booah’s one a fortnight it will take 3 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carrot

I am remaking this model of Carrot for the painting competition. He will be on a 40mm dia. base when he becomes part of this army but the competition rules are for a 25mm round base.

The original figure as shown was made for one of my first Discworld units, which was then limited to 13 figures. They will all be reappearing here at some time in the future.

For some time I’ve been wanting to have a standard bearer throwing his flag in the air but have never seen such a model and am not too sure how to do it. My progress so far is to cut Carrot up so that I can change his pose.

Figure is now reposed and the banner is in the air. The ribbon is a little too long to be realistic but nearly has the effect I was after. The figure will be given a new sword, and may retain the crossbow - he also now has his Book of Laws and although never mentioned in the books I’ve given him a lead; may also add a bone or dog toy.

Just needs a few bits of GS work before I can paint – deadline is this Saturday

Wow nice, he's looking awesome! And Carrot has the strength and dexterity to make that kind of throw look just as nonchalant as it does!

I think you're right about the ribbon, perhaps a tad shorter might work better.

I love all the details though, 'The laws and ordinances of Ankh Morpork', the 'protector' and the football for the games he organises among the street gangs. Such a great representation of the character. I'm also a big fan of the new pose.

The movement trays I ordered have arrived. They are by a company called Warbases. I had seen them at a wargaming show but they didn’t have the items I was interested in with them that day. Their mail order service was excellent in that I ordered in the evening, they despatched next day and PO delivered the day after even though the company used 2nd class post.

The only fault I have with the company is that I emailed them with an enquiry about the compatibility of their products over a week before and they never answered. I added the enquiry to the comments box of the order form with the addition that if the answers weren’t yes to cancel the full order. They still didn’t answer but the parts do fit together as I hoped they would.

If there had been another company at the show with a suitable alternative I would have given my business to them.

That banner is excellent the best Ive seen so far. What is it made of and is it treated with a stiffener or other chemical?

Doc J – Glad you like the banner – it is just painted paper – here’s a LINK (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,49674.msg920458.html#msg920458) to my method of making them.

The movement trays are not quite what I expected, but I did buy sight unseen.

They were cut to standard sizes so that they will form up together into a large rectangle for display purposes, and their own bases will give a flat ground level which I thought would suit my initial plan of basing the army in a town square type setting. Unfortunately, while I expected the gaps between the holes to be small in a few cases they are non-existent. My intention to make a cobble street using a stash of bird seed I have may not now work.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290229579_9623f5fd4e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEH6up)

I didn’t find many examples of this type of base on the net so a fall-back idea is to have the cobbles well-worn and poorly maintained with patches of gravel where there isn’t the width for a cobble stone to be glued.

I may make one base board a little higher than the others and add a statue or other feature in its middle.

He didn’t do so well at the painting competition, but then again I only spent a few days painting him, so not unexpected.

Vimes is next with a target date of 26 March – also want to do all the bases and trays now so that they match -  will also be further encouragement to get finished figures on them.

Vimes – Because it’s a GW competition I’ll have to use GW stuff which means I cannot use the Clarecraft Errol and Vimes figures ( 1 and 4).  My GW version of Vimes (2) is meant to be him as a Duke so I will use this figure as a starting point (changes will include a panatela and baby dragon to light it as a minimum) and unless anyone can confirm where the dragon (5) came from I’ll have to convert the red familiar (3) into Errol.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52288985467_7d72cb8a89_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEAHEc)

Plan is to put both figures on a single 40mm dia. Base.

Movement/Display Trays and bases –I have one less base than holes, due to the quirks of purchasing bases in multiples of 10 and trays in multiples of 3. Having decided to raise the height of at least one of the boards  the spare hole will covered by further layers to make steps with the intention of putting a statue on them. The raised areas will be covered in flagstones rather than cobbles.

Not sure what to have a statue of, and size may limit to a standing figure rather than a mounted one.

Hey JAK, I love how Carrot turned out, so I'm really excited to see what you do with Vimes. He's by far my favourite Discworld character (If not my favourite fictional character!). Are you going for the ducal uniform or the Commander of the Watch one? If you go for the full Duke regalia you'll need to make sure he looks suitably grumpy that he's wearing it!

Not sure if you can get the silver cigar case in at that scale somewhere that looks natural, but it'd be great if you could....

I'm getting really inspired by your work, and I'm tempted to make a squad now based on the old night watch from the book of the same name...

Vimes will be a difficult build (especially if I have to include a cigarette case) but I think I’ve got all the bits I need. During his meteoric rise from local drunk he has had many official uniforms none of which are full described but all have stockings; in red or white. So besides these he will have a combination of the items that have been mentioned; puffed shorts, red shirt with silly baggy puffed sleeves, new gleaming breastplate with gold ornamentation, highly polished ceremonial helmet with gold decoration and feathers and chin strap/plumed hat, garters, golden coronet with knobs on or spikey without knobs, Red velvet cloak with fur or purple robe with vermine, buckled shoes, and sometimes a sword.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290449990_36d3faaba5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEJe1A)

He has always done his best to get rid of the more stupid parts of each uniform and get it into a condition that at least makes it look as if the occupier is male and did once manage to damage beyond repair one of these uniforms in an ‘accident’ at the University.  When the situation demands he wears his correct uniform to please Lady Sybil and as he is leading his men under the Ramkin banner he will do so now, it just won’t be as pristine as it was when new.

Raised area of Movement/Display Trays done and the start of a couple of plinths for putting statues etc. on. The larger one will overlap onto the second base and will accommodate a mounted figure, the small one may be made available for the Ankh-Morpork Tourist Board.

Not painted in a fortnight but at least they’re built.

Errol’s head is GS and the wings came from the figure from the top of a standard, with GS to plump up his body a bit. Vimes is only slightly changed from his previous incarnation although he is now standing rather than walking and appears to have been distracted midway between lighting up, possibly due to Carrot throwing the banner about.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289963423_3c921738d0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFJnv)

A problem not resolved in the books was where to keep your cigarette lighter. All dragons are small and many kept as pets by Ladies who show them off, like their modern counterparts with their Mongrels Shorgioodles, walking on a lead or carrying. Gentlemen keep very small ones, not as pets but as lighters but how do you transport something as small as a mouse/rat on your person without it coming to harm. I have resolved this by converting the quiver into a travel box for the poor little creature – Lady Sybil would want it to be well looked after.

Both dragons are a bit over scale (pun intended) but one has to be seen and the other may be a proxy Gryph-Hound.

Just over a week to paint them in and I discovered that due to my 9 months inactivity a lot of my paints have dried up. :icon_sad:

The paint situation is not as bad as I first thought.

I had over 70 pots including 20 old Citadel ones (1990s vintage that I inherited), 5 hexagonal Citadel ones (also inherited), 30 Miniature Paints (local stockist & cheaper than GW), 18 current Citadel (mostly cheap from a closing toy shop) plus a few other makes.

I’ve lost 6 Miniature Paints and 4 current Citadel ones, plus one current Citadel one that has separated and I cannot get it to mix together to make it usable. A few others are starting to thicken up but are still liquid and usable, including my original Citadel metallic colours.

The annoying bit is that some of the ones that have dried up are not mixable, Black White, Yellow and Red so will have to get to town next week before I can make any real progress on the painting front.

when thinning or rebuilding/reconstituting a slightly dried out pot do not add straight water. mix clear matt acrylic 50/50 with water and add this. mix with a stick or match, or brush handle, shaking exposes more of the paint to air and starts the chemical reaction of hardening, mixing with stick stirs it good enough.  I hope this helps.  steveb

Paints restocked but at £1.45 their price has gone up a lot, I’m sure they were only £1.20 last time I bought some -   need a rise in pocket money.

26 hours in which to finish Vimes – pictures hopefully by Monday.

steveb - thanks for the advice about saving the paints.

Both Vimes and Errol are finished although as I haven’t progressed with the bases they had to go on a temporary one for the GW competition.
Vimes has a few improvements and additions to the original figure and a complete repaint. He’s just lit up and hasn’t put his lighter and cigarette case away;  MattyMatt - the case is a little too small for the inscription – I gave up after “To Sam with love from y” and settled for the simple V that you can just make out in the group photo on Booah ‘s thread.

Errol was silver but I’ve tried to make him look a little iridescent.

Some progress has been made on the bases, unfortunately not the ones the bulk of the troops or the ones that have to be done first for the GW competition will be on, but at least it’s a start.

I wanted the raised plaza area to be flagstones edged with kerb stones. I trawled the net for ideas having found the local ‘model’ shop didn’t have anything suitable to use, and the plan now is to have a slightly random rather than regular pattern of rectangular flags.  Next question was what to make them out of.  I thought about Milliput or Green Stuff but in the end I decided on paper and card. I also wanted the flags to be of a realistic size as many I’ve seen look over large.

First thing was to line the sides with kerb stones. Using the cereal packet cardboard that I’ll use for the flags, I cut some rectangles for the tops of the kerb stones and lined the edges of the plaza. The large gaps are where drains will go – possibly card or GS but will add after the height of the cobbled areas is known.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289964993_6808dcd0cd_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFJQz)

Next I cut strips of printing paper and stuck over the top of the kerbs and down the sides of the base. I hoped the paper would give a different texture than the cardboard flags and being thinner than the card wouldn’t affect the matching up of the separate bases.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289959091_f266971602_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFH5P)

The texture wasn’t quite as rough as I wanted so I covered the kerbs with tissue paper well soaked in PVA glue and stippled the surface with a toothbrush. It seems to be right but won’t know until it’s painted.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289959071_ef10c7b35a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFH5t) ]

The next date in the GW competition is 23 April and is a unit of 10. I’m off now to cut out a lot of flag stones while I think about whether to do some Dwarves or Humans first.

One benefit of my recent move is that I now have a permanent work station otherwise I wouldn’t have got anything done in the past week.

Having cut a load of flag stones it’s been a slow process sticking them down and trimming to fit bases and holes, but only having a few minutes here and there has given the glue time to dry so was perhaps for the best. I’d been warned that MDF soaks up glue like a sponge and the cereal cardboard separates a little too easily so have used a fair bit of watered down PVA as a wash over everything. It all seems to be stuck well down but if it starts to come apart I’ll use some superglue.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289964358_a9808b82fb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFJDC)

I’ve not quite finished and unfortunately still haven’t decided which unit to make first – and only three weeks left to complete them.

how do you make cobblestones from bird-seed?

I did experiment on a few bases sticking birdseed on them which worked, it was just like putting a large gravel on. Add the figures on to the top otherwise it looks like they are wading through a ball pit at a nursery. The seed on the edges benefit from extra glue and a coat or two of PVA and varnish to protect them from damage. Sorry but no pictures.

It was not so successful to use this method with these trays. Before purchasing the MDF trays and bases I did ask the manufacturer for advice on their use as I had heard they were prone to warpage. I received no assistance from them towards the use of their products so if they believe any problems discussed in the following, and any future, review could have been avoided why didn’t they let me know in advance.

Quick review of MDF movement trays and bases made by War-bases.co.uk.

I am using their Alternative Kings of War range of multi-hole (I'm using 3-24) movement trays with 25mm and 40mm bases to fit. The movement trays are made up of two layers of 2mm MDF, one with holes for the bases, glued together. Much is made of the use of a laser to give precision cuts etc.

1)   The holes etc. may be precision cut with a laser but the sticking together of the two parts is by a ham-fisted dwarf – out of 11 trays; 4 were not correctly aligned -  2 to the extent that it was so noticeable that I had to trim edges and fill others to make them acceptable for use.
2)   The glue used to join the two halves together is not as strong as it should be – two trays were coming apart before I started work on them.
3)   MDF warps – even on the occasions where I’ve been able to use a weight to compress them after sticking something on their surface – with the weak glue (2) as well as warping they then also start to come apart ............(to be continued???)

On top of these initial problems with the trays themselves it has not been as easy as I’d hoped to cover the surface with the bird seed. I lined the outside edge of a movement tray with tin foil and each hole with a double stacked base wrapped in tin foil to keep the seed within the tray surface. Initially I stuck the seed onto a layer of PVA and placed a few heavy books on top while it dried overnight. Next day after removing the tinfoil and bases everything looked fine but seed on the edges was easily damaged or knocked off so I ran superglue round all the edges and left to dry. In the evening the trays were still flat and edges seemed secure. In the morning not only were the trays warped but the two halves were starting to delaminate.

I’m still working on the plaza but haven’t finished it yet and have started to experiment using some embossed wallpaper which is not quite the effect I wanted but so far no warping issues.

wow looks good.
Sorry to hear about your problems with the mdf. I always thought those MDF-movement trays are still to expensive so I've begun experimenting making my own from hardboard. I have'nt tested large surfaces yet but i think it might be less sensiive t warping.

Is the bird seed on the plastic bases just glued with pva?
Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Plaza WiP Part 3
Post by: JAK on April 16, 2016, 12:44:07 PM
I believe the total cost of trays and bases was less than half of what it would have been for plastic bases alone – plus I didn’t have to make my own trays or drill out the holes. Where I’ve remembered to stick a weight on there has been less warpage.

On the figures above the seed was initially glued on with PVA but like I’ve done with the MDF superglue will have been used round the edges.

Cobbled Road Bases and Movement Tray

While struggling with the bird seed I found some embossed wallpaper with a pattern that look as if it would be suitable for a cobble or block road surface.

Photo 1 - the movement tray – I’ve numbered the holes and the bases so that the pattern matches – although I doubt with amount of trimming done that it will, or if in the wrong hole that it will be that noticeable.

Photo 2 (missing or forgot to take) – bases are coated in PVA glue and placed in tray.

Photo 3 – piece of wallpaper placed over the tray and pressed onto the bases – put heavy book on top to hold down while glue dries.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289964868_c8be94f0b2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFJNq)

Photo 5 – cut carefully around each of the bases with a sharp knife. Coat surface of the movement tray with glue and place on wallpaper matching up its holes with those for the bases. Place heavy book on while glue dries.

Photo 6 - Trim edges of wallpaper back to those of the movement tray and bases – I do this twice; the first when the PVA is dry after which I run super glue around all the edges and then when dry cut or file to match the edge.

I am tempted to say keep the birdseed ones ......... as they are inventive and look good, but also ........... you might become peckish in the middle of a game.  :biggriin:

Sorry - couldn't resist.
I have used the same wallpaper idea for the 30x30cm modular boards I use for Mordheim or Frostgrave - very easy and cheap.

Progress is slow but has been made. I’ve dropped the birdseed cobblestones for the time being but will give them another try when I move on to the next stage in a few years’ time. Basic paint job finished – now need to plan where 70 figures go once they’re built and painted

But did you also notice the full theme for the bases?

I know it’s not clear in such small pictures – the tools, the red lantern (green light on unseen side), STOP sign, angry underground worker with extinguished candles, yellow liquid draining into hole…….

The Road will be the front part of the City Watch movement trays / display base.

The main characters will be on the smaller trays at the front and the bulk of the army (human and dwarf size) will fit on the larger ones. Most figure positions should then be interchangeable if required.

At last the initial work on the display bases/movement trays has been completed. The two areas of rough ground are not how I thought they would turn out but they are good enough to start with.

What I now have are 81 individual bases each ready to accept a completed figure.  I know of 76 named characters with close association with the Watch, so that only leaves five spares, and I’m sure I’ll think of something for them, if I haven’t missed anyone from the books, before I finish.

76 named characters? Wow! This is going to be fun to watch!  :eusa_clap:

I assume you already have some idea which models are going on the larger bases? Will these all be "big" models, or will some just have room for extra bits and  bobs?

The first finished figure – a simple rebase as I’d already repainted him earlier in the thread. On the base is one of his many discarded Disorganisers – although it could be the Mark five "Gooseberry" with the handy to use Bluenose TM Integrated Messenger Service as he appears to have placed it on the ground so the little green imp can take a message to the nearest Clacks tower.

Now 77 - 76 figures to go – just realised I’ve not planned to do Lady Sybil and she has to be there, even if it’s just to wave them off, after all it is Ramkin money that’s financing this venture.

The bigger bases will have the odd troll and I do hope to add a few bits and bobs, as above, where I can.

When finished, I’d also like to add an overall scattering of something like the leaves used in the old Rensburg thread to tie everything together and fill any over blank spaces. One idea would be to scatter a load of Visit’s pamphlets, or other printed paper as at least two others have connections with such items.

Having made the effort to start the Pleasant Surprise 2017 I’ve made a slow restart to this project – it was either that or waste the green-stuff. As my stock of paints may be depleted until end of Feb I hope to be able to spend some time making more of the figures.

The first to be done is Visit. The top picture shows the two original versions I had of him, the second was the planning ideas for the new version after some ‘friend’ trod on and damaged this one (we never found the missing foot) and the bottom one is the near finished new model.

From the semaphore period which I don’t think has been superseded by anything else. I hadn’t been intending to include any paddles in my models – perhaps I should as I intend there to be a pigeon or two (depending on how the GS work goes – they’re not as easy to make as cabbages)

Post by: JAK on January 22, 2017, 07:36:26 PM
It’s no wonder I never get anything finished, I keep getting distracted. A local GW store has started a small army painting competition (leader, couple of units, etc.) to run over the next few months – the first item to be the leader.

Having already entered Vimes in a previous competition I needed someone new who could at least look like a leader. This fell to Mr Boggis, president of the Thieves’ Guild who has served as a Special in the City Watch.

Having already obtained the free Slaughterpriest from the relaunched White Dwarf to be his second Minder the search for a suitable base to sculpt him on started with these as my initial thoughts.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289959226_78ae065b1e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFH89)

Eventually three figures (2 elves and a Juve) donated bits to make the base figure.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289958781_fc31bd54d3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFGZt)

On to this a bit of GS.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290229504_c205c64aaf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEH6t7)

And then some paint.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290449825_7be1a5bc81_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEJdXK)

The first minder Vinny 'No Ears' Ludd converted from the slaughterpriest.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290449925_3147ab1f42_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEJdZt)

The second minder Harry 'Can't Remember His Nickname' Jones based on an iconic GW figure (so iconic that the shop manager had never heard of him – don’t they train their staff any more or is it that with AoS all past versions of fantasy must be erased from memory)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52288986712_05c312f5ee_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEAJ2E)

The three together.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52290450280_974ed00111_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEJe6A)

They didn’t get placed in the competition but then again they don’t really fit into the look of GW games.

Sorry about Thrud – they’ve been trying to get rid of him for years but as the only real offer was a couple of quid from someone who said he was mega-rare, he’s been in the bits box for too long. At least he’ll see the light of day now – and he’s not had much of a conversion.

Post by: JAK on February 11, 2017, 09:09:22 PM
The next entry for the GW store comp. is a unit so as its ‘February is the shortest month:’ you’re going to have to suffer a few dwarfs over the next few days.

There are quite a lot of dwarfs in the City Watch, some just get mentioned by name, but others have a minor incident in the story which allows a little bit extra to be added to the model.

There will be a mixture of old and new figures with some conversion work and all will have a new paint job.
Todays’ figure is one of those who just gets a mention.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Lance-Constable Hrolf Pyjama
Post by: JAK on February 12, 2017, 08:18:26 PM
This City Watch unit was started in the days of true WFB (square bases and ranks) where it was intended with a few ‘house rules’ that alternate rows of dwarf and humans would allow the front two ranks to partake in attacks either with spears in combat or missile fire, humans firing crossbows over dwarf heads. With AoS the use of slightly larger round bases and the movement/display trays (described before) has allowed greater freedom in converting and stance (not having to rank up) so I’ve gone back to modelling each individual character rather than dovetailing together a group of battle ready troops. I can’t remember the last time I actually played a game so it will just be a display army when it’s finished anyway.

I didn’t have access to a camera when I started these builds so where there is a WiP photo their boots will have been painted prior to putting on the base.

Next up is Pyjama who again is only mentioned by name. A simple repaint after being given a new spear made of thicker plastic coated wire than that used in the unit shown in Konrad’s Spearman Conversions thread. I see Hacknee was on the front row of that unit, I don’t remember removing his lunch though.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) Medusa
Post by: JAK on March 01, 2017, 08:34:40 AM
One of the things I’ve always liked about the Discworld series is the images that form in my head when reading, which is surprising as in truth descriptions are a little lacking. This is, however, very good for a modeller and allows a great deal of interpretation. My favourite example is the Pseudopolis Light Dragons (page 4 of the By Jingo thread) which was developed from a short paragraph in one novel. Today’s figure is not quite as dramatic as the Dragons but is based on a couple of lines which had no relevance to the main story.

Quote
“That woman they put in the Watch last month, the weird one from out Ephebe way. Gust of wind caught her sunglasses and three people turned into stone.” said the old lady.
‘She was a Medusa,’ said Glenda, ‘The wizards managed to turn them back again, though.’

I’m sure PTerry thought of her as being in a recognisable human form and size, like Medusa in the TV series Atlantis, otherwise the old lady would have said more than ‘weird’. However, there is at least one comment on the Net where he has been known to have discussed having snakes for hair so perhaps I should have just added a head scarf to the GW figure and a long dress to cover the tail, leaving  the rattle sticking out, but where’s the fun in that.

The bits I initially planned to use.

The WiP. The bow and arrows didn’t fit properly; she needed to be holding her sunglasses so no free hand for a sword and mirrored shield either which just left a spear.

Quite the figure there!  I'm amazed at the creativity with this Disc World stuff.  I haven't read Pratchett's stuff, and some how I'm not sure I'd appreciate it much, it seems a bit wacky, but I'm not complaining, just observing.

I'd use the figure on the left, he looks suitably amazed, surprised, fearful, and looks like he's been turned to stone in the middle of it.

Warlord – the scales are just a small dia. Brass tube pressed into a thin layer of fresh GS. Didn’t expect it to work as well as it did so didn’t put the effort in to make the pattern symmetrical.

Finished Medusa, with victim, ready to go off to part three of the painting event.

I now have 3 weeks to build and paint a possibly human unit for part four of the event (and more importantly for On the March 2017)

Thanks Warlord.

Brass tube gives much thinner gaps than the Biro or other plastic tubes. I can’t think that I’ll be doing this again in the near future but would think that with a pair of pliers you could squeeze the tube into a hexagonal shape. Brass also comes in hollow square sections so can have diamond scales as well if wanted.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Lance-Constable Slapper
Post by: JAK on March 27, 2017, 02:39:04 PM
Uniform

The Watch uniform isn’t really described anywhere in the books other than helmet, breastplate, knee breeches and boots with nothing on colours; although Vimes does comment in one book that he preferred a uniform you could lurk in. At the start of the series the equipment was old and rusty and fitted where it touched.  The ‘official’ Paul Kidby illustrations are a bit drab and plain while the original novel illustrator Josh Kirby used gold metal and red and white.

The illustration of Nobby in the Peeled Nuts, a historical re-enactment society, is a very over the top Elizabethan style with multi-slashed clothes, enormous ruff and a multitude of feathers which is partly why the toned-down Empire style was chosen to be the base for this army.

For colours we wanted to honour the Kirby red and white but keep it lurkable. While looking for a new paint supplier over the past months I found a range by Humbrol intended for model railways. They had a good selection of colours but many had a gloss finish and were not clearly marked as such; I did find matt versions of a dark red, fawn and a mid-blue which have been used. Good paints but need to be stirred rather than shaken to mix.

To start our next batch of figures we have:-

Lance-Constable Slapper

His claim to fame is that he was one of the men sent to take over from the Palace Guard after an assassination attempt was made on the Patrician. Being a typical Watchman he has ‘acquired’ a non-rusty helmet and the longer spear of a replaced Palace guardsman.

Another great model!

I've got quite a few of the Humbrol acrylic paints, mostly because years ago I found their reds to be much, much better than GWs. They do a lot of military colours as well as bright colours, pastels and so on. Also matching spray cans for some of their range (small and pricey but useful). And the reason my Vampire Knights are in lacquered red armour is that I picked up the pot of gloss scarlet by mistake, so you're in good company there! ;)

That's interesting 'cos I use their enamels for figures, and every second red I buy is dodgy. Their yellows are a nightmare. The rest, good.

Thanks for all the views and comments.

We’ve used enamels in the past. While their slow drying time was great for blending it was also annoying and with having to use spirits to clean brushes etc. we have remained with acrylics – can safely lick the tip of the brush as well.

Next up we have:-

Corporal Gimletsson

He was another one of the men who replaced the Place Guard. To indicate this we’ve assumed, as we did with Slapper, that he would ‘acquire’ some better pieces of equipment.

This is going back a long way, late 80s even; to be fair to GW their modern Foundation / Base paints rarely disappoint in terms of coverage.

That aside, I like the Palace Guard colour scheme, a whole unit of those banded spears would be impressive. I will file that idea away for later stealing!

Haddock has just returned from Quirm where he has been taking part in an exchange scheme with their Gendarmerie. He carries his lantern for when he moonlights as a watchman for the Royal Bank of Ankh Morpork and the black arm band signifies his (rumoured) death in the forthcoming TV series of the Watch.

Watch TV Series

I first heard about this in 2014; it was intended to be 13 one hour episodes. The main plot was to follow 6 new recruits to the Watch, although some of the known characters would naturally be there as well, and was to be set in present day Ankh-Morpork. Constable Haddock would die in the first episode. It was to be produced by Pratchett's own TV production company, Narrativia, and his daughter Rhianna has confirmed last year that the project is still ongoing.

The Hitherto Brothers

Horace and Hector joined the Watch during a period of unrest and riot. Horace, in Watch riot gear, also wears a black arm band as he died after being hit on the back of his head by a thrown cobblestone. After this his brother Hector was put on filing duties to keep him away from the troubles.

These two were just repaints although Hector was given a more realistic (for GW) sized hand

Constable Lucker

In a book Lucker swapped his boots with Vimes who couldn’t cope with his own new ceremonial boots. I doubt they were high ones like these – although they were described as big, well-fitting boots of genuine shiny leather – but I just had to make use of them somewhere.

The rest of the model is down to a couple of my old Grandma’s sayings “Lucker by name – Lucky by nature” and “being hit by bird poo will bring you good luck”

At one time the Watch used pigeons to deliver messages to its officers and it looks like Lucker’s pigeon has been trying to give him more than a paper message. In taking avoidance action was it the slippery leather soles or has he inadvertently stood in something that has caused his predicament. The boots still have wyvern do on them from Vimes' earlier visit to the Guild of Heraldry – I hope that’s also lucky – he needs it to find a safe landing place.

Wow. Just wow! I've been watching your various jobs off and on over the years, and built up folders of inspiration from it!

I have got a few questions though, if you don't mind. Have you completed your rebuilds of the main characters like Nobby and Colon? Or are you leaving them for a reward once you've done the rank and file?

Did you reread every Discworld book just to note any and all Watchmen?! I did that for Gaunt's Ghosts characters, and that was hard enough with 14 books!

Finally, I noticed you had the Librarian and Detritus in one of the first group shots, are you redoing them? If not, I'd love to see some detail pics, as well as for any other completed but not shown characters.

Again, wow. These are incredibly creative, as was the old Fantasy log.

Thank you for your comments and your long term support. I’m afraid I appear to be a bit like you in that I tend to just view threads and not comment. In the same vein I’m happy to get 50 views per post and hope that I’m correct in assuming that in the main it is the same people who like my work and are returning to view my progress. Of course I do like to have the occasional comment, so I feel quite honoured that you appear to have specifically registered to make yours. So thank you again and welcome to the Forum.

Answers to your Questions

Notes on the Watch and other Discworld characters have been collected over many years, not only from the books but also magazine type articles, interviews and images. I have personally read all the books to add to and to confirm/correct this data.

There are around 80 named characters in the the Watch and about half this number had already been built based on the Mordhiem rules. These are all currently being rebuilt.

The Librarian has been rebased onto a round base so that he fits the new movement/display boards, but needs a paint touch-up, and Detritus has just lost an argument with a razor saw.

I’m normally a slow worker so I need competitions to force me to finish things. After I built the characters, including Nobby and Colon, the local GW organised their Legion of Legends painting competition so I changed the build plan so that I could enter.  It does mean that I have finished 25+ figures so far this year when normally I’d only do 2 or 3 a month. They will all arrive eventually.

Anything else you want to know please feel free to ask.

In his home country Ping is a dialect word meaning 'watermeadow'. As Visit was allowed to keep his cultural curved sword while on duty I have assumed that Ping would also be allowed this freedom and have included a few oriental variations.

No machine - just with all the problems posting images its easier to show one at a time.

Corporal Reginald Shoe

Reg is a natural zombie rather than one who has been created using magic and spends a lot of his time protesting for the right of the Undead by painting slogans on walls etc. He originally complained about Watchmen harassing some bogeymen and was convinced to join up to give the Watch some expertise in dealing with the non-living. Since he joined up there have been twice as many complaints, all from the undead, and all against Reg.

Lance-Constable Silas Cumberbatch

Silas is an ex-town-crier. Vimes dislikes all the Guilds so I don’t think the unit would have a musician but carrying his civic bell Silas could fulfil this position in the unit if required.

Another case where we had a choice of two versions of the same character to start from.

Reg – gangrenous – never; well yes he was and will be when the Watch is finished and I continue with the Fresh Start Club and other undead/vampires etc.

BUT

without putting a spoiler out there, before Reg became a Zombie he was described as a revolutionary young man in black trousers, frilly shirt and long curly hair. We felt that he would have taken the opportunity when going through the armoury for his uniform to smarten himself up with something a little more stylish. Which brings us nicely onto:-

Constable Igor, Forensics & Surgeon

As you can tell from his fashion sense Young Igor is a bit of a rebel and also doesn’t stick with the tradition of cutting parts from dead bodies. He even sometimes forgets to lisp. He has started Bio-artificing spare body parts with a glass pickle jar growing noses in it and a pet rabbit called Eerie who has human ears all over his back.

And that I’m afraid is the last of the current updates. There is a group shot on page 7 of the “Every Month a Theme: ….” thread.

The next and final entry for the Legions of Legend competition is in two weeks time and is to display what we have already built on a 1 foot square base. I’ll just make a square from my movement trays and see how many empty spaces I need to fill.

The next batch of figures – some are not quite finished but I had to get them to a presentable standard for the last leg of the local competition.

To start with some trolls – they don’t look like GW trolls and as they are living in the town of Ankh-Morpork are only supposed to be around 7’ high - even then some are too large to pass through doorways.

Constable Moraine – an ex-Holywood movie ‘star’ where one of the monsters he played was a green Balrog.  He has kept a souvenir from this time and  from when he was also guarding the Patrician. He is very proud of his inscription.

Sergeant Detritus – The original sculpt was made after seeking permission from the artist Paul Kidby to make and display it on the web; which was given provided it wasn’t used in a commercial way. Now that Mirco Art are making their (to me useless) commercial versions of Paul’s art work and the fact I felt our model was a little too small I have made him a bit taller with a few detail changes.

Post by: JAK on April 24, 2017, 06:39:11 PM
Ruby is Detritus’s wife. She was originally made at a sculpting workshop given by one of the ex-Clarecraft sculptors, Mark Alying. It wasn’t a planned event so the figure was made from memory without any reference material; hence she is slightly oversize and doesn’t look anything like the Paul Kidby drawing she was supposed to be based on. The outfit however was very like a Discworld Cosplay (although not of Ruby) seen on the Web at that time and so she was kept and finished as this costume. She is another reason why Detritus had to be taller.

Constables Downspout and Pediment. They are gargoyles and spend their time sitting still on look-out duty on roof tops. They are paid in pigeons. It is rare for them to come down any lower than the 1st floor of a building so it must have cost a lot of pigeons for you to see them today.

Acting-Constable Cuddy - He made Detritus’s cooling helmet. In the original book cover painting done by Josh Kirby, Cuddy doesn’t have a beard, so I had to give this figure a shave. When he died on duty he was buried without the customary arrangements – he wasn’t buried with funeral weapons to defend himself from any entities found in the afterlife. Not really required because Dwarves don’t believe in them, but they may unfortunately (for them) believe in Dwarves. When Carrot ‘killed’ the Gonne he placed it in Cuddy’s grave.

Fred’s well past retirement age so he’s got the experience of 50+ years of military type service and fashion styles to know what he’s comfortable in.

Captain Delphine Angua von Uberwald – Carrot’s girlfriend for most of the month but at full moon she’s his …….                She has a bag, of spare clothes and mouthwash, with handles that can easily be gripped by someone with a muzzle.

This figure is so like Angua on the original ‘Men at Arms’ book cover that she has been painted as such rather than trying to make her match the unit. Another tribute to the late Josh Kirby.

Having had a time scale/deadline with the painting competition has certainly helped me to actually finish figures; so here are 43 of the city Watch and a few unit/hole fillers so I must be half way there by now. I was fortunate in that most of these figures were part built or I had a base figure to use – a benefit I don’t have for a lot of the remaining ones.

They came from the ‘Tooth Fairy’ via a friend and a Convention.

There are two versions of CMOT in our collection – they might become hole fillers in the future.

Sorry but it looks like I’ve become a victim of Photobucket’s greed so there will be a halt in this thread’s progress while I look at the options.

At the moment over all the forums I am on I am only using 00.1GB storage space on Photobucket – if I want to continue with them it will cost me $399.99 – and as an incentive they will give me an extra 498GB storage space – big deal.

With the problems I’ve been having loading from the Photobucket site over the past months even if they were to charge an affordable  fee I wouldn’t pay as I now don’t believe that they are competent enough to be able to provide a satisfactory service.

IGNORE THIS POST AS MY PHOTOS FOR THIS THREAD ARE NOW HOSTED ON FLICKR.

Where I am at present – unfortunately (or fortunately if you consider the current situation) I‘ve not started the next set of figures.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52289965143_7f73e3dd8d_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2nEFJTa)
Using the trick shown by Padre in my other thread just to see what happens - haven’t made a decision on how to progress from here though.

1)   What are the chances of Photobucket relenting and things going back to as before?
I hear rumours that they are close to shutting down – if this is the case there is little point in amending all my previous photo links – also if they can remain there is the possibility that they take action and close my account if I do use this bypass method.

2)   Use another site – seen discussions on other unrelated Forums that most of the other similar sites like Imgur state in a vague or confusing manner in their conditions of use that they cannot be used for 3rd party hosting and while they may currently be turning a blind eye an influx of disgruntled Photoshop users may make them police their users more.

3)   Would really like to have a web site again as this was the format that started our modelling - but they seem to have disadvantages; like wanting you to use their themes or restricting the number of pages you can have – we’ll need 100 for the Watch alone – and we don’t trust any of them enough to want to pay as we’ve already had sites shutdown with little warning by giants like Yahoo and Orange.

4)   Don’t like blogs – believe a blog should be a daily entry and no way can commit to that. Also, like Facebook, being a list of entries earlier ones get pushed back and have found it difficult to find them again at a later date.

I expect however that we will follow Padre with a blog although might try Flickr first.

The only positive part of this post is that for most of this year images from Photobucket have been a pain to load, waiting minutes for them to do so – this one was instantaneous – I may be gullible, Photobucket, but it’s not $400s worth of improvement.
Title: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Captain Kzad-bhat Ironfoundersson (Carrot)
Post by: JAK on July 28, 2018, 06:45:34 PM
After a year’s absence due to our friends at Photobucket I’m now in a position to be able to continue, and hopefully complete this unit. I have around 40 characters to make and having been through the Bits Box have a base figure for all but 5 of them.  Despite the temperature in my work area (loft, 36C+) nearly half are ready to paint but my paints have been hidden away as they were drying up and becoming unusable as soon as I opened them.

I have managed to hit my Painting & Scenery goal this month, although I think part of it was a cop-out, as some were little more than a rebase and touch up as required.

So first off for today we have Carrot

Although 6’6” tall he is technically a Dwarf as he was adopted by them after being orphaned near their mine, as a toddler. He’s called Carrot not because of his flame red hair but because he has the kind of tapering shape you get through clean living, healthy eating and lungful’s of good mountain air. His Dwarf name is Kzad-bhat which means Headbanger and probably explains why when he reached 16 they felt he would be better off in a human city and sent him to Ankh-Morpork to join the Watch. You met his girlfriend Angua over a year ago where it was hinted at her minor monthly problem.  If you haven’t worked out what this is, Carrot’s lead and squeaky rubber bone might enlighten you.

Figure from page 1 rebased.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Captain Delphine Angua von Uberwald
Post by: JAK on July 29, 2018, 07:59:47 AM
GP - there’s a thin wire running through the ribbon and drilled into his back. This is the forth version I’ve done of this figure; originally he was just holding the banner. When I started a unit of pike men (not finished or shown on the net) looking for ideas I came across the Italian tradition of throwing flags, which is how I did their standard. I’ve never seen a model done this way, but sure I’m not the first, and when Carrot needed one of his updates decided on this. Trouble is with all his changes its been the same paper flag so it’s a little damaged and could do with a replacement.

Captain Delphine Angua von Uberwald

Besides her monthly change Angua can change at will which is why she wears her Watch Badge on a collar round her neck.

A disadvantage of being able to change at will is that you tend to leave piles of discarded clothes about

which is why she has a bag, with handles that can easily be gripped by someone with a muzzle, containing a lightweight silk dress and a large bottle of mouthwash,

but as teeth may be needed in the chase this bag can get left behind so you sometimes have to improvise.

1) The top figure was so like Angua on the original ‘Men at Arms’ book cover that she has been painted as such rather than trying to make her match the unit - A tribute to the late Josh Kirby.
 2) The clothes were cut from another copy of this figure.
3) The wolf belonged to Leman Russ and seemed a suitable size for werewolf living with humans rather than some of the more over-the-top figures that are available.
4) The final figure is another female fighter from the same period as Angua.
Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Gaspode
Post by: JAK on July 29, 2018, 06:28:21 PM
Gaspode

A terrier like mongrel who suffers with just about every ailment a dog can. Due to magical contamination he can speak although normally ensures people don’t realise the voice came from him. He would like to get to know Angua a little better.

I couldn’t find a suitable dog figure so this is my sculpt.

Goodboy Bindle Featherstone of Quirm a pedigree swamp dragon. Named Errol by Nobby due to a supposed resemblance to his brother.

Figure from page 1 rebased.

That’s it for this month – the plan is to finish another 6 next month but as its school break and weather still OTT not sure how things will go.

Thanks for all your comments.

Well remembered Rowsdower  – In Thud a new female officer is introduced who has a similar problem to Angua in that when she returns to human form she is also naked, unfortunately she is not of the same persuasion as Angua and there has been a centuries long conflict between their kind. But as it’s a story by the time they both arrive naked at the Pink PussyCat Club they’re just about bosom buddies. There was a Watch costume in the club but Angua settled on a sequinned gold dress.

I love the little scenery with all the equipment and tools.

Did you notice the goldfish in the water butt?

The Special Constables are a sort of Citizens Militia and were made up of those who were disqualified from Watch membership by way of shape, profession, age or sometimes brain. They often provided their own equipment which was much better than the official Watch issue.

Andy “Two Swords” Hancock worked for the Clacks but when on duty had two curved swords and a set of numkutts as used by the Agatean Ninjas. He was rather keen and once destroyed 3 training dummies in less than half an hour, they usually lasted a month under normal training. He also accidentally cut his colleague Piggle’s arm off during a training session. Igor said the clean cut of his blade made it one of his easiest reattachments. Andy has given Piggle an Agatean nagynata as compensation and so that he can keep out of sword range in a fight.

Terry based a few of his characters on real people. I made a figure of one who was into cosplay and showed it on a Discworld forum, after which the person Andy was based on contacted me and asked if I intended to make a version of “Two Swords”. I said yes and if he would send me some photos and give me his thoughts on what his character might be like I’d use them in my interpretation.  He felt his character should look and be as acrobatic as  Neo from the Matrix – unfortunately the only photo he sent me was not quite a full head shot and the impression it gave was the he would have made Morpheus look skinny.  He never replied again but when I originally made these figures I made two of each – so if you’re out there ‘Andy’ there’s a set waiting for you.

Because I needed two of each figure I made resin casts from the metal originals. Piggle has a sling added for his arm and Two Swords has a lot of GS work.  The head is a good likeness but the body is not known to resemble anyone living or dead. Looking at the photo he doesn’t look quite right for being in mid jump, I think I'll give him at a bit of an angle.

We’re on the last legs of this epic now – so first we have:-

The Agony Aunts

After much searching I couldn’t find suitable figures so I used these two figures of unknown origin to carry the GS. I think the sculpting is better than the painting.

Dotsie and Sadie are possibly sisters and possibly even real aunts. Not really part of the Watch but as the Guild of Seamstresses doesn’t want the Watch interfering with their trade, when matters cannot be sorted by a troll with a big club the Agony Aunts resolve the  issue.

Another figure I had problems sourcing until I made my Pleasant Surprise for Captain Fearless. The piano is just plastic card.

Bluejohn

Bluejohn is one of the largest trolls in Ankh-Morpork, but having rebuilt Detritus the original model was looking a little small so I took a saw and expanded him a bit.

In Raising Steam he travels on the railway so I wanted some way of connecting him to this. He’s turned out a bit more American than Flying Scotsman.

When the troll Brick first appeared in the stories he was a loser’s loser, having hit something much lower than rock bottom. He tries to make himself look tougher but his skulls are from a joke shop and are made of paper mache or rubber. He is eventually adopted by Detritus and Ruby.

Flint has a habit of testing any unusual substance by dipping his finger into it and tasting – this can lead to him being tied to his bed for days until the spiders go away. He is often partnered by Buggy Squires who acts as a minder; unfortunately Buggy has been distracted and Flint has just extracted his finger from the latest bag of unidentified coloured powder.

Schist

Entering a number of painting events at Games Workshop stores I originally thought that I could only use their products. Schist was an attempt to create a troll from an ogre. The store manager later said scratch builds were acceptable so he was the first and last ogre troll.

Edge

The Ankh-Morpork Watch have progressed so much that they now train watchmen for other parts of the world. Sergeant Edge now works in his home town of Sto Lat but has returned to visit his comrades bringing a most welcome gift which you may remember from another thread is a speciality of his homeland (these are hopefully the last two I’ll ever paint). There is no truth in the rumour that Nobby and Colon recommended the colour choice of his uniform by suggesting that it was perfect for hiding in fields whenever there was work to be done.

Emile

Emile is another outsider trained by the Watch. He is a Captain in the Quirm Gendarmerie and is in Ankh as part of an exchange visit. Quirm is slightly French in character and Vimes felt their force’s helmets were wrong so I started with a kipi and while searching the net for images of these came across French military uniforms of the 1700s with red, white and blue stripes and so Emile was born.

Dorfl is a golem, over a thousand years old, and while he is still basically human in shape his original features have faded and his colour become mottled where repairs, including a new foot, have been added over the years. His previous job had been in a slaughter house where his equipment was a cleaver, a goat and a slate slung over his shoulder to communicate to the other staff there.

This figure perfectly summed up AE once he was given a chain mail shirt: i.e. short, neat and tidy, mail too big for him and ready and prepared to take on anyone, even a troll. Unfortunately while the above is correct, AE, an accountant by trade, was as strong as a kitten and twice a thin – he does however have the heart of a lion and did attack a troll so he will remain as is.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Precious Jolson
Post by: JAK on November 23, 2018, 07:33:21 PM
Precious Jolson

There’s little in the books about this Watch officer other than she is not large but family sized, has muscles like a troll and comes from Howondaland.

Howondaland is where there are pygmies which suggests an African inspired country. On a semi-official Discworld web site it has also been suggested she has a similarity to the traditionally built detective of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by AM Smith.

One proper character has already been allowed to keep a traditional curved sword while on duty so I’ve allowed those from foreign lands to retain some of their culture while serving, I just got carried away with my interpretation of Precious.

I intended to base her on my spare copy of Brunhilda until I realised I sold her so she’s now a mixture of milliputt and GS over a wooden core.

The origin of this figure is unknown, I do know the arms and head are conversions and all has had a lot of GS work.

Sally is not human and requires her clothes to be designed to protect her from the sun, long sleeves, gloves and helmet with an extended brim. Her skirt and boots are based on those acquired following her, and Angua’s, experience at the Pink Pussy Cat Club (As mentioned earlier by Rowsdower). I thought it would be fun for her main weapon to be a large wooden stake.

Chert is a member of the new Traffic Division set up due to the numbers and behaviour of the carters in the town. He is currently dealing with parking problems and it looks like someone’s tried to avoid a fine by attempting to remove the Morpork Boot.

A wedding present from the Patrician to Vimes.    Vetinari knew that Vimes loved walking the streets of Ankh-Morpork  so it was very typical of the man to present something that did not allow him to do so. Vimes gets round this by changing places with the front bearer, who rides in the chair when they have moved out of sight, and they change back just before they arrive at their destination. Assumed that the unnamed bearers are watchmen and as they are on duty they have a novel way of carrying their spears although this has caused a few incidents of Street-rage and the odd cut-and-run, especially when reversing.

 Visit

You may remember that back on page 2 of this blog (2 years ago!) I started a new model of Visit. One of the original versions of him had been damaged so most of him was rebuilt and we left him like this…

He’s had a few other changes but has finally been completed.

Visit is an Omnian who originally came to Ankh to convert the heathen to the faith of Om. This is a task he still enthusiastically pursues along with his watch career and today rather than doing the usual door to door he’s come on parade prepared with banner and portative to preach to the masses.

In the books he was allowed to retain his tradition curved sword rather than have the watch version although nothing was ever said if there were other deviations from the official watch uniform. This was the excuse I have used to portray other out-of-towners in traditional/ethnic garbs.

Hi steveb good to see you here - Like everyone else on the Forum I’m currently enjoying zaks videos of your collection – hope you’re feeling better and will soon be adding to it. All the Best.

Title: Re: The Ankh-Morpork City Watch (Army) - Sybil

Sybil

Sybil started as mainly high elf bits under the GS but once I’d started painting decided to model her in the ball gown.

While this group is meant to be the City Watch it was inspired by the events of ‘Jingo’ which is why Carrot carries the banner of ‘The First of Foot’. As was tradition a Ball is held before the men go off to war – it must have been a good one as Sybil hasn’t had time to change out of her ball gown before going to attend to her dragons, she’s so behind she has brought a dragon with her, in fact it looks like she’s brought two dragons and a collection box for the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons.

Willikins

The Ramkin’s butler whose misspent youth had equipped him in the use of many weapons, a favourite being sharpened pennies in a cap rim. Wasn’t sure how I would show he was a butler but expect European readers will recognise the inspiration.

Correct.

Willikins went to war i.e. to invade a sandy desert country, where there was nothing but sandy coloured sand. His unit was Lord Venturi’s Heavy Infantry which he chose because they had an attractive uniform of red and white with gold frogging. This is my version of them.

After a short time in the desert Willikins and his small band of men appear to have gone native; when they ambushed Vimes’ men they were dressed in unfamiliar robes and headdresses.

This figure is based on the CGI troll Mica created for the film “The Troll Bridge” although there has never been any suggestions made as to whether the two trolls are the same person or they just share the name. He and Brakenshield once had to be separated when they resorted to a little fisticuffs, and there is still some animosity between them.

Feeny Upshot lives out in the sticks where the Ramkin family just happen to have their country seat. He is the local law having inherited the job via his father and grandfather together with an oversized blackjack with the word LAW burnt onto it. He is helped in his job by his pet pig Masher and the goblin ‘Stinky’. Having met Vimes he has now received training from the Watch in Ankh-Morpork.

Many thanks for all the views and your comments over the past years, they have formed part of the encouragement I’ve needed when times have been hard to complete this project. The last post was for the last of the named members of the City Watch.

There are 81 individual bases on the boards with 77 named characters (2 appear more than once) and 8 unnamed people/animals or birds. Due to changes and additions during the build the Librarian is the only character without an identified location; he was built to fit one of the large holes but there isn’t a free one for him now but he can rest over an empty small one without encroaching onto others spaces. The manhole covers I made to fill empty holes are no longer required.

My plan for now is to repair and finish the bases/movement trays and touch up all the errors these photos have highlighted. The statue requires some weathering and posters etc. and for some reason none of the trolls have any lichen on them.
When this is done I’ll (hopefully) take some better photos and replace the ones in this thread, particularly those still hosted on Photobucket.

Post by: JAK on June 22, 2021, 07:25:55 PM
It seems that Photobucket are not satisfied with the changes it has made over the past years to ruin forums and the like and have c***ed things up even more. I don’t know when they did this as they never informed me but their site says current rules for free accounts are that you can only have 250 pictures which can use up to 2.5GB of their server space. I had 400 pictures on their site deposited between 2010 and 2016 and because they had been resized to Forum standards I am taking up an excessive 120.87 MB on their server.

I received an email from them threatening to close my account because I’m using too much storage?

When I went to my page (something I’ve not done since the start of the problems) all my photos are in a haze and I’m told I have to upgrade before I can see them. I’m not prepared to pay them $60 just so that I can see my own photos so I started to deleted them thinking that if I got down to the free level of 250 they would release the restrictions on my account. They didn’t until I got down to around 150 left which I’m sorry to say means there may no longer be any images at the start of this thread.

The originals of the deleted pictures are on an old PC which is not at my current location so at the present time it is unlikely that any missing images will be reinstated soon.

With the 2021 Armies on Parade being online and at local GW stores I decided to give the City Watch a final burst and really finish them. This was just a bit of touching up of paint and adding a few tufts to bases. To make up the AoP size I added a few of my empty movement trays and repaired an old model of The Drum as a backdrop.

I'm at a loss for words. This is stunning. (Not the least because of my love of all things Pratchett.) Well done.

…...were expecting some thing different.

It’s a number of years now since Photobucket (wash your mouth out with soapy water) destroyed many threads on this Forum.
During my painting drought I’ve also been spending some time going through my old PC backups to find the pictures that had been lost from this thread. They have now all been restored and the build is once again fully documented.

The old hands can relive 6+ years of my life, and newcomers since 2018 can now see the beginning as well as the end.

Before my ‘Discworld Inspired’ thread I had another just called ‘Discworld’ in which I’d created a number of army units based on the Discworld books. This suffered the same Photobucket destruction although many of the pictures are still visible to me. (I don’t understand this as my Photobucket account has been closed). I may seek out the original photos and restore them or depending on future plans rebase the figures in AoS fashion and post in  ‘Discworld Inspired’ to keep the theme together.

As said in my previous post - As far as I am concerned the City Watch project is now complete. (until I think of something else I've forgotten)

Apologises again, I didn’t expect to resurrect this thread but the local GW Store are holding a Dragon painting competition to celebrate Chinese New Year.

I had no intention of entering but I was sorting out some old figures when I read their post about the competition. They suggested it could be any dragon, old or new or even “one you have been working on and want some motivation to finish!“ I had just come across the remains of this dragon and was about to put them back in the pile of shame – but - I knew this dragon was originally bought in 1988 and had been built a number of times although it kept falling apart before it got anywhere near a coat of primer, so thought it was time for me to have a try at building it.

I had to scrape the old Alraldite glue off the joints, repair a number of broken parts and redo the holes for new wire supports. Being an old model there were large gaps in the joints so I sandwiched a layer of GreenStuff between each joint as I put them together and used super glue on the wire supports. So far she has stayed together despite the rough handling trying to paint her.

Many thanks to all who have viewed my last post, and the comments, particularly as many of you are so engrossed trawling through the new TOW rule books.

This wasn’t meant to be the Discworld dragon when I started the build, it was, as mentioned above, just that no one had managed to keep it glued together for any length of time during the past 36 years. I did wonder if it was cursed.

When I mentioned to the Store that it might take me 36 years to paint it at the rate I go they couldn’t guarantee to hold a competition then, a pity as the Chinese zodiac sign for 2060 is a White Metal Dragon which would have saved me having to paint it anyway.

The dragon is designed to be standing on all 4 legs but during a previous build a leg had been cut in an attempt to make it stand upright. I continued with this idea when making repairs to the leg but the tail angle was wrong, and not easy to correct, resulting in the need for it to be standing above ground level. Once I’d decided this should be a burnt out house rather a rock the Discworld elements were thought about.

Other than the stance, and a new tip for the tail, this, unusually for me, is unconverted. There are few WiP pictures as this was a quick job, 20 days start to finish; I normally struggle to finish a single figure for the GW Store’s Miniature of the Month Painting Competitions.

This is now the real end of the City Watch project, I’ve no intention of rebasing this figure onto one of my rectangular cobblestone ones and the diorama of Nobby and Colon at the City Gates with 1001 Elephants is just a pipe dream, although I do have a spare Mumakil somewhere!

Do the LOTR Mumakil scale well with other GW models?
I tried to use LOTR miniatures in other GW ranges but it never worked out

I like the camels with WHFB scale.
And the Dunlending warriors mostly work too IMO.

Thanks. About ten years ago, i wanted to make a Saracen army for my Bretonians to fight and i thought about using some models from the LOTR range but realised they were the wrong scale
