Title: Timbor's Fantasy Log (12-7 Westfalia Halflings)
Post by: Timbor on June 05, 2010, 01:40:10 PM
So I figured it was time that I share my armies with the greater community.  I will post pics of my stuff in the next few days, but I will start by introducing my armies.

My empire army is a rather mixed lot - the predominant army is painted in the colours of altdorf, but I have regiments painted in the colours of averland, middenland, as well as others.  I buy most of my models second hand, so many of them came with paintjobs and I have either been too lazy to strip and repaint them, or have been satisfied with the paintjob and have left it as is for the time being.  Most of my stuff is from the 5th/6th edition, but I have a smattering of 7th ed state troops and flagellants.

My next army, on which I am currently working, is my orcs and goblins.  I have painted pretty much all myself, and they are painted using greens, earthtones, and purples.  I like the look of purple on green.  I have almost painted 1500 points for my orcs, and hope to have that many finished in time for the summer campaign.

I also have decent sized ogre and DoW armies, but they are currently sitting in storage while I wait to get the rest of my Empire and Orc armies painted!  For some reason I have a habit of buying more than I can paint...

I've also been working on some scenery using Hirst Arts molds - my molds are from the Fieldstone range.

Pictures and more info to follow!

Ok, so no pics of the main armies at this time, but to tide you over, here is a conversion I made for the recent militia conversion contest.  I made the beginnings of a Kislev warband for use with Mordheim.

I converted 6 figures:  A druzhina captain (converted from 40k commissar gaunt), an ungol horse scout, a streltsi, a warrior, a youth, and a paymaster-type guy (I think he will work well for a DoW paymaster):

Full group:

Warrior and Youth:

Druzhina:

Paymaster and Streltsi:

Streltsi:

Scout:

Hope you like em!  I also have a bear and tamer that I made using and old glory Rus and a Foundry bear.

The kislev lot is brilliantly done! I'm not overly hooked on all of the hill dwarf coversions, but the overall effect is spot on, so I guess I like them too

Digging the stuff, Timbor!  After your cannon entry, I've been looking for more of your creative work.  Thanks for obliging!

Thanks for the comments!  I had a lot of fun converting the kislev guys - I just have to paint them now!  I'm not sure which one is my favourite though.  Old moneybags turned out really well - he was easy to make, and I think he fits the part of someone who is really good with finances, but isn't much of a fighter (much like the DoW paymaster).  I think the youth turned out to be my favourite - I just like his backpack and the halberd-spear.  The warrior and streltsi took forever to sculpt, but I think they turned out ok for the amount of experience I had.

Time to post some pics of my empire minis!  I have a bunch that I bought used that were not painted by me, so I won't bother posting them right now.

First off, some middenland halberdiers.  These were some of the first minis I ever painted when I first started about 12-13 years ago:

Next up, some averland handguns.  Some were started around the same time, others were finished when I restarted a couple years ago:

These were both painted as units of 16 (the size of the old 5th ed troops boxes).  The other models are painted but are broken and in need of some love.

Here are my knights panther.  The grandmaster and standard were painted way back in the beginning.  The plastic knights were painted about 2 years ago:

Next up are my pistoliers.  They were painted about a year and a half ago:

Next we have some state troops.  Painted them sometime after the pistoliers:

Finally, we have my unit of 21 flaggies.  I think these were the most recent finished empire unit, but that's still about a year ago.  I use some of the flaggies in my mordheim witch hunter band.  My favourite is the conversion with the greatsword from the militia kit:

As you can see many of my figs have a gloss finish to them.  I don't mind the look to the eye, but they make for pretty poor picture taking.  I plan to eventually buy a matte varnish to give them a nice flat finish.  They are glossy because I often use future floor polish to make my own washes as well as to act as a hard coat finish - especially for metal models as I don't want the paint to chip.

Next up:  My orcs.  I have been working on them for the past year or so.  I am hoping to have 1500 points painted by the time the T&G campaign starts, as I plan to play with the greenies  ::heretic::

As mentioned above, this army follows a common colour theme.  All the units are painted in regular earthtones, but have purple as a part of the uniform.  The night goblins come from the hiddin' moon clan, and the orcs are from da Krushin' Fists!

Night goblins with spears and shields (BFSP except for boss)

The boss is my best painted orc model at this time:
Front:

Back:

Night goblin archers (BFSP) - finished this unit in about a week this past May - my hand was sore by the end!

Next, a Squig Herd:

And Squig Hoppers (I love painting these guys!)

What army would be complete without a doom diver?

Next up are my orc boyz.  I have 2 units of 25, made from 6th ed unipose, 7th ed, and AoBR-converted-to-fantasy boyz.  These were dipped using minwax polyshades antique walnut wood stain.  I like the way they turned out, as I was able to churn them out much faster than standard highlighting.  This leaves a moderately glossy finish, so they need some matte varnish too.

A few individual orcs:

I'm working on a boar chariot at the moment.  After that, I have some spider riders and savage orc boys to finish!

Thanks for the kind words, guys.  To be fair, the first stuff was done when I was 12 or so, and I am 24.  I did take about a 6 year break though from 15-21..

It is very satisfying to see my painting improve over time.  It's nice motivation to want to paint more.  At this point I am trying to focus more closely on my speed than ultra-high quality, as I have tons of models I want to paint   Hopefully I can try and finish up my boar chariot this weekend.  I was going to dip it, but now I think I might just highlight normally... we shall see.

Just want to share what I have been working on.  Just finished gluing all the pieces together for this ruined tower using hirst arts molds and dental stone.  I mostly followed the plans for their ruined fieldstone tower, but the top of the tower was my idea.  Hopefully I can get it painted and finished in the next week or so.  I put a few 7th ed empire soldiers in it to show the scale.

Yeah, it was pretty fun to build.  I would catch myself just staring and thinking how cool it looks instead of actually doing work on it.  I followed the instructions here:
http://www.hirstarts.com/ruinfld/ruinfld.html

The molds used were mold 70 (basic fieldstone) and mold 75 (ruined fieldstone) to make the fort and tower, then I improvised and used mold 77 (octagon tower) to make the top of the tower.  I also have mold 74 for the bridge, and mold 240 for wood shingles.  I wish I had mold 230 so I could make some roman-type shingle roofs for the campaign

I have also built the standard bridge, I just need to paint it as well.  I plan to paint them both together.

The molds are really nice.  They are all silicone.  Albeit, they are a bit pricey.  Good for Christmas though.  You don't need to use dental stone.  Plaster of paris could work as well.  I just used the dental stone because I had access to it through my school (I'm taking dentistry).  Dental stone will be harder and denser, so will be less likely to chip.

Time for another update!  Got some other stuff painted, but have to take pictures.  In the meantime, here is my entry for the first conversion contest in the TnG campaign:  Ogre "Orceaters".  They are armed with great weapons.  The ogre in the centre has gone savage, and likes to eat the most out of the 3.  In fact, he is carrying a large animal's leg into battle in case he gets hungry between scraps  :biggriin:

The have lived away from their tribe for so long, that all the gnoblars that followed them are now gone (read: eaten) so they have taken to keeping snotlings as their pets.  They aren't as smart, but are even more fun to kick around!  They are a bit stringy though, so have to be marinated for the best eating  :closed-eyes:

Timbor!  Well done!  The wolf pelt is great and the fact that the dude with the spear looks like he's just going to be bludgeoning someone with it is neat.  Pants on the 'extra savage' guy are done really, really well.  If you're going to be rocking out more ogres, I suggest you look at this guys' project blog on Warseer.  Made me dizzy with glee when I first saw it.  The way you did the fur reminded me of this guy's work.

I still need to find out how the pros get their greenstuffs so smooth for smooth surfaces.  It's one thing to have it smooth before you put it on, but once I start shaping and sculpting, it just gets bumpy...

I completely agree!  I sometimes use a wet, rounded tool and a file after it's dried.  Problem with that is getting the file in position without scratching other stuff.  I've had some success with ultra-fine sandpaper - 220 grit.  I still don't think I'm really doing it right...

Even so, I dig your orc-eaters!

Posted this tutorial I created a while back but since it's relavent, here it is again, should find some tips on smoothing here - http://cmdante.blogspot.com/2009/12/warhammer-etc-figure-sculpting-tutorial.html

Basically you want to get things as smooth as possible when your initially working the GS, then go over it again after it's cured for an hour or so and is a little firmer. Finally sand/scrape away any remaining roughness with 1200 grit wet dry paper and a sharp scalpel blade.

Great kitbash conversions here Timbor!

Thanks for the link and the compliments!  A question about the clay shapers - I just leared about them.

What size do you use?  What about the hardness?  I was looking as something like this:

Size 0, soft:

Also use a wax 5 carver - it's a metal tool.

Depends what point in the curing time you work it at but in general, a reasonable amount. The softer the tool, the more control I find.

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the foundry mercenary ogre I painted up as my orc character for the TnG campaign.  I find the 'ogres' are the size of GW black orcs.  Too bad they don't fit it with the GW ogres... would make great maneaters!

I present Mukktaaw the Wanderer

Man, macro shots sure are unforgiving!  I'm happy with the final product, though.  It's nice to spend more time on a mini every once in a while.

I have about 3 or 4 from this range.  I would like to get more and make a unit of them - would be a nice fill in for orc biguns or black orcs.  They are expensive though - one LGS near me sells em for $15 apiece, and then there is one back home with a whole bunch on clearance for about $8 apiece.  The blister includes some snotling-type guys too.  My main concern is that many of them carry handguns, which may make it harder to sell them as regular orcs...  I do love the character of the minis though!

I have lots on my plate with the tale of many gamers. Even if I bought up a whole unit of them, I would probably not get to paint them until next year sometime .  Im working on trying to finish a unit of 25 pirazzo's this month, then next month I plan on painting up those ogres, plus Ruglud's if I have the time.  Finally getting some motivation to paint up the horde of DoW minis that I have accumulated over the past 2 years.

It's unfortunate that you are not in the UK Timbor.

I have a few of those Foundry Ogres and Orcs and I got them at Salute in the bargain bins - a lot cheaper than you are paying.

I was planning a Pirate gang for Legendsof the High Seas, or a similar rules set.
This last Salute show there was only one stand with them, when in previous years Foundry themselves were also present and also had their cheap bargain bins - at monetary amounts of 4 blisters for £20 or better.

If you ask nicely I am sure members attending UK shows could look out for them for you. The main dealer guy is called Dave Thomas and I believe he comes from the North East of England, but he does a fair amount of Trade Shows.

http://wargamesfoundry.com/fantasy_ranges/single_packs/fantasy/ogre/

Not sure if this is the full range? It may be an indication of how they sell them now, and the packs I have seen are old blisters.

Edit:

On closer inspection of the new Foundry site, theabove are OGRES and the other ones I mainly have are Mercenary (Imperial Looking ) Orcs at the on this page:-

Yeah, all miniature collecting would be better in the UK

At the trade shows, were the foundry blisters at 4 for 20 blisters of single figures, or blisters with more than one mini in them?  5 quid per blister is roughly equivalent to what I would pay for the clearance ones for $8 a blister with one mini and a few of the orclings.

I'm not sure how the war orcs size up to the ogres - I imagine the war orcs would be of similar size to the old style GW comedic orcs.

They're the actual blisters I linked to - current retail is £11.00 a blister on the Foundry site I think.

The ones I got were rather tatty yellow card, but the reference numbers were the same. I said 4 for £20 because I couldn't quite remember, but it may have been 5 for £20 looking at my notes on what I bought in April.

Size wise they vary. One or two of the Orcs with muskets are not overlarge, and yet some of the close combat weapon guys are quite big.

That still works out at £60 for 16 models so £3.75 each.
The bargain blisters mean £2 or £2.50 each.

I do think Foundry are overpriced, and £2.00 each is acceptable - nearly £4.00 is too much IMO

I see Dave Thomas is at the Worlds show at Derby University Oct 2nd & 3rd

Well, I surpassed the goal for September in the Tale of Many Gamers.  310 points on Pirazzo's lost legion.  One of my favourite minis from the GW range.  I painted up 25, but 8 of them are actually warlord games armoured pikemen.  They are pewter models, and they paint up well!  The only bummer to this unit is that 10 of them, inc command, had a mishap with some clumpy primer.  In person its not too bad, but blown up on a picture its pretty noticeable.

Also, for those who wanted a size comparison for the foundry merc ogre painted as an orc, here he is with his buddy Pirazzo:

I still love your ogre/orc.  He wins another cool award.

Finally got around to taking some pics from my october entry.  Without further ado:

Rugluds armoured orcs x12: 214 points
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n187/Timbor/Warhammer/Dogs%20of%20War%20army/DSC02218.jpg)

Ruglud, the champion, was a converted black orc big boss with a head swap and a hand swap using a plastic black orc, an empire xbow, and an orc blade:

I also magnetized the shield in case I want to swap it out later
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n187/Timbor/Warhammer/Dogs%20of%20War%20army/DSC02223.jpg)

Next up, one ogre, LA and GW, 44 points:

Anyway Timbor, nice job sir but why purple for the Orcs and Ogre?

Yeah, I use the autumn flock from GF9
http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=gf9_hob_scn_flk_131_000

I think I got a bit too much of it on the Ruglud's, I might pull some off later.

@SOF - I chose purple for the colour scheme for my orc army.  I like the way purple looks with the green, so I kept it.  Also, the ogres were modelled to have come from an orc tribe, so they assumed the purple colours too.

Well nicely done....but I always think purple to 'regal' a color for orcs. Looks good though.

November update - despite being busy, I got some stuff done!

First off, paymaster! (Armour Silver Steel, Luckstone, Great Weapon - 109 pts):

The last picture here is meant to show his moneybag that fell on the ground
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n187/Timbor/Warhammer/Dogs%20of%20War%20army/Paymaster4.jpg)

The idea behind this guy was that he is a merchant accountant from Kislev.  He carries his account book with him everywhere - even into battle!  He has been known to crack it open in the heat of combat to jot down notes about which soldiers are fighting valiantly, and thus deserve a bonus, and which ones are running cowardly - thus deserving nothing!  Sure helps to boost morale!

Next up, 5 Heavy Cavalry w musician - 120 points:

These are gripping beast medieval russian cavalry, with one of them being Byzantine Tagmatic cavalry.  The scale is not too bad compared to the old GW unarmoured horses, and the riders are just a touch smaller than gryphon legion cavalry.  Detail is somewhat less though.  I have another group of 5 that will be added to these, and will make a nice large block of knights.  They are supposed to be from Kislev as well - they travel with the paymaster, acting as protectors.

All in all, fun stuff to paint.  Glad I finally got around to painting my paymaster guy.  I did the conversion like a year ago.

Army shot:

Total points: 797

Hopefully December will be a nice, productive month for me   I have several ideas in the works.

Some efforts from December.  Much of it, aside from visiting family, was spent preparing for A5 by writing fluff, and building this guy:

Moddin the troll, possessed by the spirit of Ennio Mordini:

You can read about him here:

Next, I kitbashed 10 duellists using some models I had as well as archers + pistolier bits, painted in a kislev colour scheme:

Long time no update!

I was not completely idle over the past few months, though licensing exams, final exams, and a baby boy have kept hobby time at a minimum!

A few things have been finished though.  I think it was late march or early april when I finally got my ROB board finished, as well as this hirst arts tower:

By the end of the animosity 5 campaign, I had finished painting my mad cap brewing squad.  The base is nice and full, but it consists of a cart with the brewing pot, a doom diver catapult (to launch the brew if needed to act as a stand in hot pot), the crew, and some miscellaneous snotlings, random weapons, etc.

Finally, last night I finished 4 models from my next duellist squad.  2 of them are artizan looting landsknechts, the other 2 are some old citadel fighters from the 80s that I got in a trade - first time they have seen paint in over 20 years!  One was labelled a poacher, and the other a scout.  I set up the closest thing I have to an actual special photo booth for minis, and it turned out pretty well I think.  I was going to take some more pictures, but my camera died...

Im pretty happy with how these turned out.  My face painting skills are getting to the point where I am not completely ashamed to show closeups.  Still have a way to go though.  My main problem is that I get impatient after spending a few hours on the same figure...

Thanks, GP!

The gripping beast russians worked pretty well.  I find their sculpting to be a bit basic on these figures (though I really like the looks of their plastic vikings).  The horses actually come with the byzantine like barding (at least some do).  They are from the medieval russian range.  I have 5 more which have had the horses painted, but not the riders.  The full command is with those guys.  I am hoping to finish em before I move in 3 weeks.

The ROB board was actually quite easy to do, and I even got my wife to help me.  I think she liked that it was a bit more of a 'macro' project as she continually says she doesnt have the patience to even try to paint a miniature  :engel:

I have actually been pretty active over the past couple months.  I finished a unit of 20 of the old school Rulglud's armoured orcs, which have not yet been photographed, as well as participating in the first conversion contest at DWP.  I have been painting up some stuff as hobby reports for A5.5.  While its all greenskin related, perhaps you may appreciate it.

First up, some old MB2 orcs and other orcs from the 1980s:

Next, an orc battleship from Uncharted Seas:

I have high hopes to paint up an old halfling unit that I have recently acquired in time for EoW...  Time will tell!

No love for the old orcs?  :engel:

Finished the orc frigates from my uncharted seas orc fleet.  They are being used as 'snotling pump dinghies' in my A5.5 fluff:

Quote
Snotlings are good for little else other than kicking around. The problem is there are so many of them, that it takes you forever to kick them all! Dok Dentokk, having been contacted by an envoy from da Krushin Fists has been granted a technology they employed to great effect in the battle against Nippon - the snotling pump dinghie. These crude paddleboats are made from makeshift scrap and are powered by countless snotlings turning the paddlewheels. While they are not capable of much actual damage, they work splendidly to bog down larger ships as they struggle to repel the swarm of tiny greenskins swarming their ships and stealing their valuables.

Indeed!  I think I have enough for a unit of about 30 now.  Just need to paint some more.

I also have 20 of the old school rugluds painted up - those things paint up fast!  I should get a picture of those too...

New update!

First, I finished off the remainder of the orc starter fleet by painting up the 3 cruisers:

Next, I decided to try something different, and idea that has been growing and developing for some time now.  You see, I went and bought a bunch of halflings.  I wanted to try something special with the little chaps.  Then, last week 023 posted the most delightful link (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=39642.0) on making scenery using faux fur.  I decided not to make a gaming table that would probably not get used.  Instead, I am going to try and base my halflings using the fur, to depict a cut hayfield.  The unit will hopefully get some sort of haywagon as a unit filler (stand-in war altar perhaps?  :engel:)

Here is my test fig:

My potential hay wagon would be this.  I just have to get around to ordering it:

That halfling is great, I really like it and what you have done with it. The brown leather effect is fab (and something I could never achieve with my stupid insistence on using enamels). There's only one problem with it - I now, for the first time in 43 years, have a desire to collect a halfling army. It's new feeling for me. I must fight it, though, too many other projects to sort first.

I think it looks pretty cool Tim, my only concern would be about the edge of the fabric that over hangs the base base edge a little... Other than that it's am ery cool idea.  How hard was it to get it cut to size?

I agree with the above.... The figure it self is very well painted and those warships look like fun.
Cheers,

Blue

Post by: Timbor on October 01, 2011, 11:57:14 AM
I just used scissors to cut it to size, wasn't too hard.  I also had to trim the fur, as it was originally about as tall as the halfling (not too good for a 'mowed' field).  I see what you mean though, I might have to trim it a bit more.  Otherwise I might try gluing some sand or flock or something to hide the edge.

I also had to paint the fur (it came white) so what I did was first use some dark brown watered down, and dipped the fabric bottom into it to get it brown (like soil).  Then for the actual 'hairs' I first used some watered down goblin green, and more or less drybrushed it in.  I then did the same with Bubonic Brown.  The colours are a bit washed out on the hay/grass in these photos.  Must need to improve my makeshift photo studio.

@Padre - I would love to see one of your batreps coming out of the moot!  Thebattleforge has enough of a line to make an entire army, I am just not sold on their sculpts though.  There seems to be lots of the old old GW halflings on ebay these days... you should be able to get then for a similar price to the BF ones, maybe a tad more.  It would just take time.  Then there are the less common GW imperial halflings, of which I have a ton of archers (Blue can attest to this).  I have been scrounging to find the spear and sword halflings from that range, and I think I have enough of those for a small unit too  :engel:

Also, the leather effect was dark flesh with snakebite leather highlights.  Then wash black.  Then snakebite the highlights again, with a final small highlight of  Reaper leather brown (a very light brown).

@Syphon - Yeah, they do kinda have a warcraft feel to em!  They were nice and simple to paint up.  If I had better freehand skills I could have made the sails look spectacular.

Great, now I have the ending theme in my head.....

Great conversion work though. I can't wait to see how a whole unit looks.

Ok, I have gotten some more work done, despite being sidetracked by hunting season  :engel:

I added 5 more halflings to my group, the original is included with the shot.  As was mentioned before, the fur/grass needs some work to try and hide the edges of the fabric on the base.  I am still trying to think of how to do that.  Perhaps I will cut it short and glue on some of the fur trimmings to try and hide the fabric edge.

I also got my battleforge halfling hay cart painted, but I still have to cut and finish a base for it.  It will go on a 40x80mm base and act as a unit filler.  The battleforge stuff is ok, but it makes me sad to put it beside the citadel ones - marauder or 4th edition.  The sculpting quality is just so much better on the GW side...

I liked the patch coloured pony.  I think I may use that scheme again when I paint some WK dwarf ponies.  Speaking of WK, through my own skills of persuasion, I got ahold of a couple master castings of his goblins, and had a blast painting them  up:

Now, to give a short review - the body sculpts are very smooth and detailed, making the minis easy to paint.  The detailing on the clothing is bold enough to allow easy drybrushing and highlighting.  The weapon hands required some filing to get a better fit, but I am not sure how that would change on the production molds, as I am ignorant to such things.  The head on the left was my least favourite, but I only got 3 head options and opted to save the sallet head for later.  I thought the face details to be a bit rough, and I always find it hard to paint eyes that are partially obscured by a hat.  I imagine most of the other heads will be nicer, as the one on the right is simply outstanding.  Needless to say, I look forward to ordering a bundle of these, and so should you (as long as I can order my fill first!).  The bodies will probably lend themselves well to having halfling heads too.  Thanks, WK, for your contribution to the hobby by having these guys made!

I love the bright green skintone, very much in the classic GW tradition.

Regarding the fit of the weapons, most should fit fine, but a couple can benefit from a quick pass with the drill in the socket or the file as mould shrinkage and the limitation on how deep you can make the sockets without tearing the mould when getting them out can make it a bit tight. That and the fact they are pushed to the limits of their versatility of course. In any event, no major surgery should be involved.
Title: Re: Timbor's Fantastic Fantasy Log (11-22 Update)
Post by: Timbor on November 23, 2011, 05:47:43 PM
Yeah, it was no big deal.  I put a file in the sockets and reamed them out a bit, then just filed the ends of the hands a bit and they fit fine.  On the plus side, mold lines were minimal or nonexistant, so preparing them actually took very little time!

After a busy December, I shook off some laziness and got around to painting some fine kislevites that I acquired from another user here.  Got this Kossar and Horse Archer finished, pretty happy with the results.  The kossar was a breeze to paint!  Lots of details but the brush just seemed to find them with no problems.

No love for the marauder orcs, eh?

If you remember my ogre conversions from page 1 (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=33891.msg541298#msg541298) I painted up one of them shortly after the conversion.  The other two sat primed but unpainted for a year and a half, and now here they are, finished at last!

Quote
Orceater ogres

While many ogres that are taken with wanderlust join human armies campaigning around the world, some ogres either by chance or stupidity end up following a tribe of orcs around, aiding them on random raids and pillaging.  While the eating and the stories they get are good, these 'Orceater' ogres do not get as much respect as they would like from their 'Maneater' brethren.  Mind you, most maneaters keep their disdain somewhat quiet, as an ogre which has combined its brute strength with an orc's lust for battle and destruction is more than a match for the other ogres, even if they are as smart as one (a match, that is)...

Tough crowd, eh?  Fine I will give you some more 'empirey' choices!

I've had a nice productive week!  I am going to try some Coreheim/Mordheim with my local gaming group, and chose a witch hunter warband.  Here are the beginnings of it:

I have the metal witch hunter stuff, and also the frenzied mob.   I love the frenzied mob sculpts, especially the fish head guy.  I figured he might make a good fanatic!  Man, if only all GW stuff could be sculpted like the mordheim range...

Thanks for the comments, King.  I had painted up the one ogre, then decided he looked too bland without any warpaint, especially since he is impersonating a savage orc.

I figured I should try and finish off my warband if I wanted to use it in Mordheim, so here are 5 more members for the witch hunters!  Now I just need to paint up a priest and it should be all set!

Its from Foundry, their 'kodiak bears'.  There are 2 bears in the pack with a baby bear as well.  This bear is bigger, the other a bit smaller but still useable.  They have another bear pack, "Bellicose bears" but those ones are a tad small to use as cavalry.

Already commented on seeing that "norse" barbarian painted for the first time.  Maybe someday I'll paint the one I've got, and purchased over 20 years ago for roleplaying.  That and the southlands looking barbarian figure that I bought with it in those days when they came with hex shaped bases.

Amazing figures!  Wonderful painting! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

What?  No, I didn't disappear.  Though I did move house and was kept busy for a while with that.

Right now I am playing in an online WFB campaign set in the Karibbean:  http://z15.invisionfree.com/Old_Grey_Beards/index.php?act=idx
(If such a story-based game interests anyone, we still have one spot open in our faction - the Cult of the Celestial Canopy - PM me for details)

My character is a Nipponese samurai/ronin, and he needed a boat.  I found myself a nice little junk on ebay:
(http://woodcraftconstructionkit.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/c/h/chinese-junk.jpg) for pretty cheap.

I got it, and assembled it:

Width was somewhat disappointing, only about 55mm so I can only fit 2 20mm bases side by side, but for the price it works well.

Then, this past week I got back into casting my hirst arts molds (I now have a dedicated workshop!) and while casting the blocks for a castle/fort, I made use of some extra to cast some more details for the ship, in addition to modifying a few other parts:

Its not done yet, but so far I like the progression.  The clay tile roof is one of my favourite hirst arts molds.  That and the cavern accessory mold!  Pure awesomeness right there!

Hmmm. Why did that red cross appear?  :icon_confused:

It's the special feature of this site - it recognises and will not allow junk to be shown.      :engel:

Funnily enough they all show on the quote/reply page - way beyond my interwebby skills.

Nice work Tim - what looked like a tourist style ornament has really taken off.

No!  I don't mean it's literally taken off - that would make it flying junk.

Got some more work done on the ship - most/all of the detailing is done now.  I still have to refine some of the gap filling.  I added some pieces to the gunwales and the stern, finished the railings on the main deck, and added a figurehead to the bow.

You cannot see it in the pictures, but I also cut out some plasticard to make a level deck inside the cabin.  I have not done anything with the sails, as they are individual pieces of balsa and I will work with them once the main boat is ready to paint.  I am considering trying a wood stain for the part I want to remain 'wood' but am unsure if it will work well since some of the dental stone pieces are supposed to be wood.  They will not stain well, they will just soak it up and be a nice uniform brown.  Perhaps I could seal the stone pieces with some diluted PVA glue?

Onto the pictures!

I thought about removing the horns on the gunwales, but they are fastened with carpenters glue which will likely make a mess of the balsa if I try and separate it.  I kinda like it... makes the ship more intimidating  P)  Also, they might be able to use em to fasten ropes and stuff... maybe...

Well, I filled the most obvious gaps in the hull, finished most/all of the detailing, slapped on a basecoat of paint, and even sealed up the dental stone pieces with some diluted PVA - she is ready for a nice coat of wood stain!  The paint scheme is loosely based on the Ralgard paint scheme from Uncharted Seas.  I am curious to see the result.  After the stain I may add some more highlights depending on how it looks.  Likely the red will need a bit of work after the stain.

Woku... is that a kind of ship?  I am not familiary with the term.  From my very limited knowledge a junk is the type of ship with square prow and the ribbed sails.

Now, Wako pirates, on the other hand, were of japanese (Nipponese?) origins.  I guess some might consider my crew to be such.  I considered some of these for the crew:
http://cavalcadewargames.com/cavalcade/Wako_Pirates.html

However I can only fit about 12 crew and my nippon rocket launcher on the boat, so it is already full  :icon_mrgreen:

Moar painting!  ;D

First off, I managed to get a stain in on the ship a couple days ago, but was too busy to post pictures until now.  So, here are some nice shots of the junk after a coat of stain:

I am quite pleased with the result!  I think all it needs is a touch up with some highlights and I will declare the boat pretty much finished.  Now the sails on the other hand... gotta get started on those.

In other, most exciting news, I also received this week a much anticipated load of WK dwarfs and goblins.  Such great stuff!  I could not help but put together this little character.  I  mounted him on a scibor scenic base, and here is the result.  I still have to figure out a nice light box or something, as I think the colours got a bit skewed in the picture.  Looks much nicer in person.  But for now, I present to you Gob de Leon!

I forgot to update you fellows when I finished the junk:

I am pretty happy with the results!  I might add some more details at a later date, but for now its time to move on to other projects!

Speaking of which, a friend recently sent me a blog link on making my own light tent: link (http://strobist.blogspot.ca/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html), and I made one last night!

Its good that I made it too, as it was just in time to try out on the master gunner I finished painting:

I would say it definitely gives a smoother colour, but I need some brighter lights.  Check out how the 'Gob de Leon' looks in the light tent, compared to just under the lights in the previous post:

The colours and contrast definitely come out less harsh, IMO.  Almost makes me look like a better painter!  :biggriin:

Lastly, I started a new blog recently which you should check out!  I am new to the world of blogging, so any comments on how to make it more awesome would be appreciated!  I also have a few more pictures up there which I did not post here  :icon_cool:

Timbor, I love your autumnal style bases - can you give a breakdown of how you do it? Specifically; what is that clay-brown color on the edge of the bases, where did you get that fun autumnal flock stuff, and what is the technique for getting the texture on the base that color? I really like the style and think it will be perfect for MSP (My Secret Project) which I am planning after I have got my current army done.

Its been a while since I have done any autumn bases, but they were as follows:

- Sand borrowed from a playground, glued with PVA glue before priming (works ok if its after too...)
- paint entire base in watered down Bestial Brown or equivalent
- paint edges, drybrush base with Graveyard Earth or equivalent
- pick out rocks with Codex Grey or equivalent
- highlight rocks with a bit lighter grey

I added some basic green flock, then for the autumn colour it is GF9 autumn blend flock:

Finally, I can share these photos!  As you may have seen, I was given the chance to paint up some mastercastings of WK's halfling heads for him to post pictures.  I painted up 6 of them, and they were a blast!  The details are nice and clear, and the faces have loads of character.  The best heads of the lot were the bare heads, and with 12 in total they will allow for lots of unit customization!

The are a tad smaller than GW halflings, but I think they would mix ok in a unit.  I hope to paint up some GW ones soon to post some size comparison painted photos.

Here are a couple photos, I have some more photos and discussion on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/2012/08/here-come-little-folk_18.html)

The middle halfling, with the halberd, in this picture is my favourite of all.  I named him Tom, because he kinda looks like my late grandfather:

Long time no update?!?!

Well, I was here the whole time.  Most of the fall was spent painting Arthurians and Saxons for the historical skirmish game Dux Britanniarum.  I will not bore you with the pictures and details of those adventures, for you can read about them on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/).  Though if folks are interested in that sorta non-empirey thing, I will post the pictures here as well.  Just ask.

Now, back on topic, I recently stumbled upon a wonderful resource for building terrain - specifically Mordheim, ruined terrain.  You can check it out here: http://www.ironhands.com/mordheim.htm  - I would suggest adding it as a bookmark.  Now, what caught my eye was how the author used porcelain Christmas buildings in his Mordheim stuff - link (http://www.ironhands.com/mord3.htm).  Tis being the season of such ornaments, I thought it was a splendid idea and proceeded to scour the online classifieds for a good source of gently used porcelain buildings.  After a successful search, I returned home with three suitable targets.  Here is the first test piece:

I think the witch hunter fits in wonderfully with the serene, winter wonderland portrayed by this cozy little dwelling, don't you?  Also, I think the scale works beautifully.

After admiring the piece, I assembled a few of my more delicate instruments:

Donning the glasses (safety first, folks!) I went to town trying to make a convincing ruin.  The porcelain is quite tricky to work with, as it is quite hard and tends to break in large pieces.  I managed to end up with this piece here:

I think its a good start.  I had hoped I would be able to punch out the doors and windows, but that seems like an impossible task due to the properties of the porcelain.  The building you see is actually 2 pieces, as it cracked down the middle.  That will glue together fine, but it gives you an idea of how finicky it is to precisely smash porcelain.  I  may have a go with a dremel and a grinding wheel (outside where my mess will not get me in trouble, most likely) or I might just leave it as is.  The inside will need some decorating - a second floor, wooden planks and rubble, etc.  I might try and add the inside of the chimney using milliput or something similar.  I suppose the outside of the house will be painted minimally - likely just some brown and black washes and some drybrushing, then I will have to base it.  The building cost me $5, so I think for the investment it is looking quite swell so far!

Any suggestions?

Because of the properties of porcelain, I would have probably made a mold using the porcelain one as a master, and using the resin one to modify.

That would have defeated the purpose of cheap sourcing however, may as well but one of the great pieces of scenery other places sell.

I wish you luck on your journey of discovery.
Title: Re: Timbor's Fantastic Fantasy Log (12-10 Mordheim!)
Post by: Timbor on December 10, 2012, 05:30:22 PM
Indeed, making a mold would be much more trouble than its worth, since the building is not entirely 'perfect' for the setting.  I will have to mask the wreaths and garlands, and I will have to modify the snow to look like ash and debris.  Plus, I am not sure how I would make the resin model hollow so I can have an interior.

Also, the pre-paintedness of the exterior is also part of the charm - it should look nice with just some basic washes and highlighting.  If I were to make a new model of the building, I would have to paint the whole thing as well.

One nice thing about the porcelain is that it breaks fairly cleanly, so if a piece breaks off in the wrong place, you should be able to patch/glue it.  You can see in the interior picture that there is a crack running through the right side of the floor.  Pretty much the whole right side of the house broke off, but it will just be glued back together.  Once I glue in some floor and wall boards and such, it will be nice and sturdy.

I'm wondering if you could score it like when cutting glass, then try breaking it. Maybe that would give better results.

When breaking it you also have to be careful of those edges. The are very sharp and people could easily be cut by them. I think you'd have to take the dremel to them for that reason alone. You don't want your friends getting injured by your terrain.

I was thinking similar and now that there is the chunk removed perhaps testing on that before having a go at the keeper part of the buildings doors and windows.

Yeah, the sharp edges will be filed down before it is finished.  Though perhaps the risk of injury would make the games more lifelike?  :engel:

I had a go with my dremel on some of the detailing last night, and I also discovered a quick and useful technique.  I will post up some details when I get home from work later!
Title: Re: Timbor's Fantasy Log (12-11 Mordheim terrain)

Alright, some more pictures!

Yesterday, I took the dremel to the porcelain.  It was slow going, and quite loud.  I used a diamond-tip bur for the dremel.  I varied between a round end and a cone-shaped bur.  The round end to gouge into the porcelain, and the cone to widen the hole.  I ruined the round bur completely by the end of it - burned off all the diamond bits so its just smooth metal now, lol.  The bur creates a lot of heat - you will quickly see the porcelain turn red where you put pressure on the bur.  I found that by getting an eye dropper and dripping water onto the site, it helped clear debris, and it kept things a bit cooler which I think helped it cut a bit faster.  It still took forever though.  I punctured through the porcelain in a few sites, then mostly scored out where I wanted to break, and it ended up pretty clean.

After gouging the wreath out of the front window, I had an epiphany.  Pliers!  Using some hefty needlenose pliers, I was able to break out the other windows that had little holes in them for the light.  Basically grip the thin bit of porcelain between two holes with the pliers, and then rock the pliers back and forth to make the little teeth grind along the porcelain.  After a few tries, the porcelain chips and breaks away (always wear safety goggles!)

After cracking open the windows, I glued the big pieces back together, added some balsa floorboards to help reinforce them, and then I did a quick wash using diluted future floor polish (hence the shine) and black/brown paint - just to bring out some of the details and darken the mood a bit.

I think its starting to look a lot better!

Now, should I try and gouge out the front door as well, and risk collateral damage?  Or do you think it looks fine and I should get to detailing the interior?

I think for the sake of more fun game play I'd give the door ago at trying to remove it. If you are doing the interior why not do the door frame area to have cross glued bits before to try. Might keep it together better just thought.

I was thinking a similar thing.  I might just give the door a try tonight.  I think since it is recessed, it might be easier to break off.  I will likely try to put in a couple holes, then chip away at it with the pliers...

Also if it goes a little poorly and the frame is also damaged, reattaching it potentially covers up the damage. Hell if it goes even medium bad you could sub in some other sort of replacement door and have it jammed in at a weird angle and make it look like the door frame semi-collapsed.

Heavy whole building cracking your on your own though  :-P

Awesome sir, also remember to throw some faux support planks on that tile roof...I think without even serious work on a second floor (which you said you aimed for but even without) some strips of broken balsa coming off the truncated ceiling would sell the building like nothing.

Look forward to the results.

Starting to look the part. I must confess I had some doubts about how this was going to work out (I have some of those buildings too, but the non christmassy ones and I keep them whole for use as a pulp city buildings), but it seems to work.

Only thing I would still do is work a bit on the break lines in the brickwork on the back. Bricks wouldn't break/crumble like that, so I'd use some pliers to try and make it a bit more horizontal and then build up the edge a bit with putty to simulate crumbling bricks. That will also take care of those sharp edges.

Thanks for the comments, guys!  Using some suggestions, I made some headway:

Broken timbers have been added, a door and more windows were gouged out using both the dremel with a round diamond bur (and some water to cool and clean out debris) and pliers to chip away the broken pieces.  I have also started to add debris around the edges of the main floor.  This was done using a base of styrofoam (to act as a filler), with bits of wood and broken plaster glued on top.  I also spread some glue on the bits of smooth 'snow' on the building, and glued crushed plaster to that as well.  When painted, it should resemble dust/ash/debris nicely.

Lastly, I also completed the inside chimney and fireplace using some Hirst Arts blocks.  It looks nice, but unfortunately to follow the outline of the outside chimney, you have to block a couple windows.  Design flaw there, I guess.  At least I can say I did not make the building!  Enjoy the pictures, its starting to look a lot more Mordheim-esque.

Nice work, I like how you've disguised the curved break on the masonry.

I was pretty happy with that as well.  It was somewhat by accident actually.  I was adding some glue to the inside of the wall there, to add rubble, then some glue got onto the bricks.  One thing lead to another, and now the break is nicely hidden!

It does look very good indeed - really very nice and much better than most scenery one sees. My question would be; how long does it take to change the "ornament" to "scenery" (and how much does it cost) vs scratch-building the thing from foamboard etc.?

It's not very cheap if you are wearing out Dremel diamond cutting wheels! They aren't cheap.

That was one of the points I would have raised - equipment is very expensive (good stuff, at least) and to go through it like that . . .
Title: Re: Timbor's Fantasy Log (12-17 Mordheim update!)
Post by: Timbor on December 18, 2012, 05:56:14 PM
I can't quite say how much things have cost.  The building cost me $5, I might have used a couple dollars worth of dental stone.  Probably no more than $5 for the balsa-type wood.

As for the dremel bits, they are not 'dremel' or any other high quality brand.  A few years ago I got a big 300 piece set by the company "Jobmate" link (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/HobbyToolsAccessories/Kits/PRD~0544773P/Jobmate+Rotary+Bits+Set%2C+300-pc.jsp?locale=en).  They are basically the cheapest tools you can buy.  Canadian Tire, our favourite hardware store in Canadia, was probably selling the whole set for like $20 in a big truckload sale.  It's stuff I already had, and was not planning to use soon otherwise.  I went through a couple tiny ones, but the bigger burs, like the round one with a ~1/8" diameter has stood up fine.  I think it was part of my technique - one I started using a bit of water to cool it and remove debris, it cut more efficiently.  I expect the quality of the burs is quite low, which contributed to why I was ruining them.  I imagine I could do a whole building with one good, large round bur and my pliers.  A good one of those might sell for $10 or so?  If you want to give this a try, use a bigger diamond bur rather than a smaller one.

I would think the cost could be comparable to scratchbuilding from foamcore, provided you don't spend $20-30 or more buying a brand new building to destroy.

Post by: Darknight on December 18, 2012, 06:00:06 PM
Well, a piece of foamcore is about $5 - you can probably get a couple of buildings out of it, but might need to spring for some matt board for the base etc. Everything else would be the same.

Post by: Timbor on December 18, 2012, 06:04:18 PM
Yeah, so it might work out to be a bit more expensive.  However, you have to decide on whether you can (or want to) reproduce the same exterior detail on your scratchbuild, and whether it will be worth the time to make said detail.  I would assume I spent the same time detailing the interior as a scratchbuild...
Title: Re: Timbor's Fantasy Log (12-17 Mordheim update!)
Post by: Darknight on December 18, 2012, 06:19:06 PM
I think it would be swings-and-roundabouts, to be honest. You are going to spend about the same amount of time chipping away and carving as you would detailing.

Of course, the question is "Do you want to spend time building or destroying?" Some men just want to watch the world burn . . .

The use of this technique could be excellent to add to existing methods of scratch-building, though - do a house or three like this. Have you looked in places like JoAnn's (or whatever you have in the great white north)? They sometimes have decorative houses which are not made of porcelain. They also have wood or compressed brownboard forms for crafting projects.

Not sure what JoAnn's is... looks kinda like Michaels here in Canada.  There are lots of places you can find this sorta thing - the main issue would be cost, of course.

I must admit, the smashing and breaking was very therapeutic.  Though I am not sure I would want to do a whole table of these things.  I have a few ideas for some leftover hirst blocks - mostly to make houses with a stone base and foamcore walls.  That idea is a little ways off from coming to fruition, however.

JoAnn's is a fabric store. They mostly sell fabric, tailor supplies, and upholstery supplies, but they do have some craft type stuff as well.

JoAnns is just like Michael's.

The wife and I are going to use this technique to make a creche (nativity scene, in my homeland) for Christmas. We have some Prince August castings of the Holy Family etc.

Been a little while since I updated, as I have been distracted with DeepWars and SAGA, but I have aroused some interest in OldHammer in my local gaming group, so saw fit to put together an empire army.  To start, I painted up an old wizened wizard.  Loads of fun to paint, I tried some new techniques.  I primed grey, then gave a white zenith prime.  I used inks and washes for most of the block colours, with some paint for highlighting.  Really sped up the process and gave me a nice gaming miniature in about an hour or so.  :D

Post by: Timbor on June 27, 2013, 11:41:44 AM
I have been working on my Oldhammer Reiksguard over this past month.  So far I have gotten 15 painted, though some of them still need shields.  Mostly old marauder fighters, battle lords, etc, and one WK dwarf for good measure:

I used similar techniques to the wizard with zenith priming and inks.  I was probably able to spend about 40 minutes per figure, as I did them in groups of 5.  There are some more pictures on my blog as well.  mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca

Enjoy!

I have a nice little surprise for you!  No, it is not pictures of the completed reiksguard unit (don't worry, its finished, just actually need to take the pictures).  I finished a cannon for my Oldhammer army.

A total blast to paint, the bell was beautifully detailed and took to some verdigris staining very well.  These minatures look so nice, I decided they also needed a scenic base:

The base was from 4ground, and I used some miscellaneous Hirst Arts blocks, a GW fence, and then the usual sand, flock, tufts, and flowers.  It really brings the piece to life and helps show off the immense character of these figures.

Title: Re: Timbor's Fantasy Log (09-03 Dipping and terrain)
Post by: Timbor on September 04, 2013, 01:20:51 AM
A local friend posted a dipping recipe recently, using future floor polish (available in Canada and US... not sure what options are overseas):

1. One bottle of Clear Floor Finish.
2. Black India Ink
3. Brown India Ink
4. A Tap
5. A container with a VERY tight lid (I would recommend a large mason jar)

Mixing intructions:

1. In the Mason Jar put in 150 mL of Future Floor Finish.
2. Add 30 mL of black ink, and 30 mL of brown ink. Then, add 60 mL of water.
3. Mix well and let it sit (Until all the bubbles are gone).

I mixed up a test batch (though I substituted brown acrylic ink for brown india ink).  I decided to try it on my Tabletop world windmill.  It is not yet completely finished, the sails have to be done as well, but here is an idea so far.  Pretty simple work, you can read exactly what I did on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/):

Post by: Timbor on January 03, 2014, 12:18:01 PM
Happy New Year's, everyone!  It has been a little busy the past few months, and while I did get some painting done, very little was photographed.  I am in the process of remedying that, so in the meantime I will share a figure which I finished during December.  This miniature was painted for the miniature-exchange on this forum.  It is the Lead Adventure Miniatures 'Wilhelm von Shakespeare' figure from their Bruegelburg range.  A spectacular figure, there is really nothing to say other than that.  Brilliantly sculpted, a true joy to paint, and delightfully unique.  Luckily, I got two so I can paint one up for myself.  Mine will be painted in a very similar way, with a few colour switches here and there.  I gave him a nice little scenic base using a chunk of pine bark.  Here are some pics, there are a few more on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/)

Next up, a bunch of the long-anticipated and promised LAM halberdiers!

Finally, the long-promised halberdiers.  I have finished 13 out of a planned unit of 20. Six of them were painted back in July, and I just never posted pictures of them.  The rest were finished this week.

First, we will start out with a group shot so far:

I have opted for a more mercenary approach with this unit, combining several different colour schemes for a nice bit of variety in the unit.  It helps to keep the painting interesting, rather than using the same colours all the time, and it makes for a very characterful unit.  The main schemes for this unit are red and blue, yellow and blue, red and green, and green and yellow (still to come).  Now for the individual pictures:

As usual, there are a few more pictures on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca).

I had also planned to use these guys as steelhead halberdiers next time I get a chance to try warmachine again.  I have some 30mm round mdf bases with some inserts for the 20mm square base to fit.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

@WK: You can always paint up a new unit in varied scheme as you expand your army.  Or just start a new army in a similar theme.  I hear some guy is going to be releasing loads of new fantasy figures in imperial dress, perhaps you can contact him about starting a new force?  :engel:

This week I decided to try my hand at something different - some painting from the far east.  Feeling that plain old samurai were not interesting enough, I decided to paint up a pair of goblins from the Clan War Shadowland range.  I tried a few different things, particularly some experimenting with skin tone which I hope you enjoy.

Also, note, he is just sitting one a 25mm square base.  I plan to base these up on multibases, with two double goblins on a 40mm base.  That way if I want to use these in unit games, they will be based as one goblin per 20mm square.

There are a few other pictures and some details on the painting on my blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/) for those interested.

Cheers!

And a group shot...

It sure is nice to be done the unit!  All they need now is some varnish (will wait for Spring), and a banner (still trying to figure out what to do for that).  I definitely need a little break from puff and slash, so will probably paint up some more of those oriental goblins next.

Though, my next project for this army will be a bit of a restoration work:

I am thinking of picking up some Perry plastic mounted men at arms to use for horses and the missing pieces for these guys.  Any other suggestions?

I've always liked those halberdiers. They're more Warhammer-ish than GW models.

You could try using demigryph legs and arms to patch up those Reiksguard knights...

Demigryph legs and arms would get expensive and they would not provide me with horses. I already have lots of Empire knight bits and horses, so I will use those in a pinch.  I think I am more looking for an excuse to try out the Perry mounted men at arms.  :engel:

I haven't done much in the way of Empire painting in quite some time.  However I did do some civilians that never got posted here...

Anyway, I have been painting up winter/Orcmas themed greenskins since December, and figured I should consolidate them in this thread.

A few highlights for those who missed it:

Recently, I finished two more lovely mercenary orcs to go with this group.  These were from the 'orcs' range, and not the 'ogres' range which means they are marginally smaller.  The size difference was more of a suggestion though, so they all blend nicely, IMO.

Onto the new figures,

These were very fun to paint, and a little simpler than the other mercenary orcs which was a bit of a welcome break.  The puff and slash can get tiresome quickly when it is very elaborate!

A serious case of rubber lance syndrom! I wouldn't try using the perry horses as they are significantly smaller than GW ones. Also those old knights are a bit bulkier (at least the upper body) than the standard GW plastic knights (who are the largest current Empire miniatures apart from character models). I can't really see this working.

Yeah, I actually got some Perry mounted men at arms and saw the difference.  I will likely just use the current plastic horses for them.  I actually got ahold of some more of these knights, so should be able to make a decent sized unit once I actually get to painting them.  I am currently trying to clear the backlog from my painting desk, which is full of half-finished projects, among other things:

Luckily those knights are on my desk, and as such may be given priority treatment rather than being shamefully returned to the lead mountain.

Here are the Foundry orcs I painted up this past month.  I love these sculpts, and hope to make a little bio for each one, as I feel they all deserve some sort of backstory:

Feel free to stop by the blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca) and leave a comment so it's not so lonely over there.  ;D

As an aside, if anyone has any more of these lovely foundry orcs they don't want, feel free to PM me about taking them off your hands...

I love your Snotlings!   :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::

You should totally do some as "Elf on the Shelf"!  That would fit perfectly with their mischievous behavior!   :-P

I can't believe how long I have neglected this thread!  Well, no more (for now at least!)

I recently got my little hands on some samples of the Westfalia halflings, and finally finished the job on them this past weekend.  I did a little writeup on the blog about them, but to summarize they were very easy to work with, the resin was of great quality, and they paint up really nicely!

I decided that the leader would be a shoe-in (or should I say shoeless-in?) Tyrion Lannister.  If only there was an unhelmeted version bearing the likeness of Peter Dinklage...

Hope you like them, there are a few more pictures over at the blog (http://mylifeinmm.blogspot.ca/2015/12/the-halfmen-of-westfalia.html)

Looking forward to the Kickstarter in the next couple weeks!

Thanks for the kind words!  I haven't been completely idle, I posted up a bunch of stuff on my blog over the past 6 months or so, but it was mostly all of a different genre so it didn't fit in this Empirey thread as much.

That and my last post coincides with being a few weeks before my 3rd child was born, so I have had a few other priorities...

I must also say, my fantasy interest took a hit with the reboot of WFB into AoS... just can't get into it.  But my love for fantasy in general is starting to draw me back in.
