Not much time to play or paint this summer, so I put all my painted Empire models neatly into the display cabinet.

You can click the photos to make them bigger. Not the best quality, but you might be able to pick details otherwise unseen.

Kislev, various artillery pieces & Engineers, and Characters.
My mother gave me the boat. I imagine such a small craft can sail the Stir.

Pistoliers, Knights, Spearman horde with Handgunner detachments, a Cannon, Greatswords and Bowmen.
This is the Ducal Army, with nice liveries, bright colours and many feathers. All have shoes. :)

Squires, Halberdier horde with Ogre, Flagellants, Crossbowmen, a Hay Cart, various Militia, and a big Cannon.
This is the Provincial Army, with simpler and worn-off clothing. Some go barefoot. ;)

Random collection of Mordheim models, Hochland Mercenaries, smaller terrain pieces, and a bunch of frequent Sylvanian visitors in the corner.

That's over 330 models, when crews are included into the artillery. Painted and based. I don't know how many points it would be. Depends on the edition too.

What I want to add to this is more Greatswords, more Pistol Militia, more Flagellants, a War Wagon, Camp followers, and some more Knights. But we're talking of no more than 30 models. Then I should switch away from Stirland, my love for the past 7.5 years. There are already some red and white/yellow liveries, and maybe that's the way to go.

Or maybe change the army? I've got models from most other armies. Enough for warbands, or in some cases for a complete army. Dwarfs are halfway done, although I'm a bit dissatisfied with the paintjob. Ah, and then there are Dogs of War, with Ogres and Halflings. Maybe some of those for a dessert to Stirland?

Or maybe it's Grenadier and Mithril Dwarfs. Been collecting those for a long time, but never really painted much.

Or maybe I should paint some monsters after so many rank and file?

I love this army. Easily the best looking Stirlanders that I've ever seen. I'd love to see your DoW and other WFB minis, even in warbands. Great job. :smile2:

Thanks!

A couple of years back, a guy with a username Boreas_NL had a Stirland plog here, something with 'Drink your beer while it's still hot' or the like. I think he did a great job. If you like Stirland, maybe you want to do a search.

Anyway, here are the models left on my workbench now:

The Flagellants, Militia and Camp followers will not be Stirland specific. The camp followers are Reaper bones figures, as is one of the Flagellants. He's the iconic 'Mr. Bones', with a face and weapon swap.

And here's a close-up on the modified Black Tree/Mordheim pistols guy, plus two Greatswords:

The center model is a Mordheim Reiklander, but his armor fits seamlessly for a Greatsword-carrying Ducal guard from a poorer province.

The rightmost body must be my favourite Empire plastic body ever. I want to do a cavalcade of the figures I've based on that body. Great attentive pose, great detail, all in a mere 6th ed onepose back ranker. The Perry brothers were and are true masters of sculpting!

I think those greatswords will look good painted up are you going to continue with the poor theme for the entire unit? Whats the poorest looking empire model you've seen not including flagellants, Im always looking to add another scruffy model to my army?

My daughter insisted she wanted to paint, so paint we did. She keeps wasting a lot of paint, so I grabbed a couple of models and splashed the excess on them, mixing as I went. Then, when she went asleep, I fixed the figures with a shade, drybrushing and highlights, and those meadow flowers.

I like how these older models have character. Then again I don't like their cartoonish sculpts with totally oversized hands, feet and heads. I actually didn't paint one of the Flagellant's toes in each foot in order to downsize his feet a bit.

The configuration of my camera combined with flash leaves them a bit flatter than they really are.

My idea for the Greatsword unit is not poor, but puffy. I'm mostly using the older 90's Greatsword models. So less armour and more visible puff (and beards!). But now that you mention it, the Reiklander indeed could work as a poor Greatsword.

Some of the poor looking Empire models I've come across:
- the fleeing peasant from the Giant box
- some Mordheim models, like the Witch Hunter Zealots and some of the Angry Mob
- a mixture of bodies and heads from the State Troop box: barefoot hillbillies who walk around with the bones of their comrades sounds rather poor for me...
- the bare-headed Militia guy with the lower body with torn pants. Or use the White Wolf heads.

Your Stirlanders are not meant to be poor? Heresy  ::heretic::

I thought you were going for lightly armored troops not puffy, I guess it makes sense. The poorest models Ive seen are the barefoot spearmen, Morheim Reikland  Youngblood, andthe Mordheim villager with that brushcutter? tool. The models look great you are right, they were very cartoonish.

My next unit of Greatswords are not Stirlanders. They'll likely hail from Talabheim.

But that Reiklander-based Greatsword might go into the Stirland unit, after all.

Eleven weeks, thirteen models.

Militia with Pistols

Closeup on some

Handgunner champion and two Halberdiers

Barefeet for those obsessed with them

Skirmish trays & hasty defences

Lots of flirting with non-Stirlandic colour schemes. I'm beginning to like the colours of Talabheim and Ostermark.

Also good process on some more R&F. These should be 'about the last ones that the army needs'.  :icon_lol:

And mad tinkering

In addition, soundly beat an undead force last Sunday. First time in my life (7th, 8th, T9A). Also first game in my life where I didn't make a single mistake, and carried through the original battle plan. Fate favors the bold.

More tinkering over this weekend.

Nothing special in three Greatsword, but the end of a 7-year long project:

I made the 4x7 tray, a couple of conversions and basecoated the figures in 2009.
Figured there will be at least one character in the unit. I usually end up with two or three.
Now, no more proxies in the back ranks. :)

And then Baggage Train figures, plus an odd archer:

The mule I guess is old Citadel, the two peaceful guys are Reaper Bones.

We played a game of 3rd ed Warhammer on Saturday. Empire & Dwarfs vs. Chaos.
The Empire Baggage Train/Camp guys got directly to the table. Empire lost, so this stuff got plundered.

3rd is a great game. The two other players were veterans who avoided the well-known cheese. We played without magic, and the feeling was more like a historical war game than Fantasy. It ended in a partial panic and rout, not an overkill. No dice-fests and gore orgies. I'd take results like this over the typical 8th ed & post-8th stuff. For me, few dice and usually few casualties took nothing away from the grandeur. The basic statlines and the Ld & Cl characteristics of the leaders truly mattered. Also love that Light Armour and Shield are actually worthwile, because there's no automatic AP from Strength. Also liked the different Movement and Reinforcements phases.

Complicated and clumsy at points, but no more clumsy than any other WH edition over the years.

We got our second child in early November, which practically meant no hobby time for some months.

Trying to get back into the mood here. Old plastics, heavily basecoated earlier by someone else.

See, converted bare foots for you with that specific Stirland-bias.

More to follow, I hope. Still some 20 Stirlanders to paint before this army is 'complete'.

Very soon, I've spent exactly eight years collecting & painting Stirlanders...

Re: Stirland Renaissance [Spearmen Horde & Mortar]
« Reply #97 on: January 29, 2017, 06:05:27 PM »
Our kids entered a new rhythm for sleep, and suddenly I have free mornings and evenings. Time to wrap up a couple of projects that had been on hiatus forever.

11 Spearmen, including a second command.

Includes some reposing and conversions for relaxed marching.

With these guys, my Spearman Horde finally hits 50 (with one character added).

Then there's this old Mortar.

The loader is a Dwarf upper body and Empire lower body.

I painted the original third metal crewman earlier. The full metal team looks like this:

So I've decided to continue my Empire hobby with the classic red/white theme. There seems to be one unfinished Stirland Archer Musician, readily converted. Then no more rank & file. Need to add a warrior priest and more camp followers, but these are no more Stirland specific.

Or maybe burgundy/yellow, after all?

That's about it.
