War Altar Progress
« on: February 16, 2012, 10:43:01 PM »
I started this thread so as not to hijack the Show Us thread. This will be intermittent, and slow, but I wanted to keep it as my first real modelling progress report. This is my first time working with plasticard for more than banners or basing.

Concept:

Beginning of construction:

I will update this thread as I continue work. I also will link to this thread in the 'Show Us' thread under my entry.

Nice design. Could you tell me where the metal wheels are from - they look a lot sturdier than plastic ones. I recognise the piece from the black coach just not the wheels.

Thanks for the link - some nice stuff on there. Winged Lancer wings, sled guns, walking forts. I can see my wallet taking a hammering again......

I got the small wheels, which are slightly smaller in diameter than the black coach wheels. The casting is adequate, but I had to ream the axle hole with my dremel as it wasn't perfectly round. Still, for the price you get five pairs of wheels, so it was worth it in my opinion.

Anything cast in metal you generally speaking have to do something with to make it fit; very rare they are perfectly cast.

Told you it was slow progress, lol

I'm not totally happy with it, but it's the first time I've tried anything this complicated. I will finish it and see how it turns out, if nothing else I will treat it as a prototype. Just doing this, even if it's not as good as I was hoping, is teaching me a lot. I know it was said before, but anyone intimidated by something like scratch-building, just do it. You learn so much regardless of how good it turns out. You can then use that knowledge later.

Update.

This isn't going to be a great construct, but it's giving me a lot of experience. I plan to revisit it later when I have more experience, for now this will suffice.

I'm estimating it's about 40% finished now.

Looking good. Are you going the traditional route and having it pulled by horses or do you have something else in mind?

I was gonna do horses, but as it's themed on Myrmidia...what do you think about being pulled by eagles?

Eagles huh? Cool idea... High elf/wood elf eagles I take it? How would you go about modeling it? It would definately make it unique.

Figured I'd just place two on a 50mm base and put chains on the wagon to them. Not really feasible in RL, but in a game with half lion half eagle creatures, walking skeletons and frogs that can eat your face, I'm not too concerned with physics.

I see, it is fantasy after all so I totally get what you mean. I was more thinking in the lines of; are you going to use flying bases, or are the eagles going to be modeled on something else, or will the altar itself support them?

I'll probably put them on flying bases, on a 50mm base.

Like this...

I'll have to fiddle around with them, they may be too big. If so I might just go with the horses.

Ok. Hmm, how wide is the War Altar itself? Given the wingspan of the pegasus (which is smaller than the eagles right?) it could be tight getting them to fit side by side. I'd suggest elevating one of them, maybe even tilting them slightly... Do eagles come with posable wings?

Probably not on the poseable wings, I was probably going to use warhawks as the eagles, I know for sure the actual eagles are too big.

Does anyone know what the size difference (not scale difference) is between Warhammer warhawks and LOtR great eagles?

Hey, Alleton - are you still looking for a high priestess for the chaise lounge? I know you've got the Dark Eldar slave girl, but were you looking to replace her?

I might be ending up with a spare set of this http://www.warlordgames.com/us-store/hail-caesar/early-imperial-romans/early-imperial-romans-civilians.html and the reclining female might be perfect for what you need. She's a lovely cast (that paintjob does not do her justice) and modestly and appropriately dressed.

I'd be happy to trade / swap / sell if you are still on the lookout for a different figure.

And . . . . where are the updates? :)

lol, thanks. That figure does look good, but thanks to Sig I have a figure that I am converting for this. As for updates, it is still in the works, but I have been working on a bit of 40K stuff lately. (coughDakkajetcough)
