The introduction of Age of Sigmar has gotten me very interested in expanding my pirate forces into individual armies.
As a little background, I played a pirate-themed Dogs of War for many years and added an assortment of scurvy characters from across the warhammer range. Some of these (Empire, Ogres, and Vampire Counts) became full-fledged pirate armies. Others (Dwarves, Dark Elves, and High Elves) were never much more than single units. I also added a good number of ships and other pirate-themed terrain to go with them.
The small skirmish battles of AoS are perfect for taking some of these and making them into small armies of their own. I'm shooting for lists of around 50 points that I can use for demo games, etc. Since I'm currently living and working overseas, at the moment this consists of making some small purchases on ebay or bartertown and working out some lists on paper. I'd like to share the progress of the project here.
Here is an image to illustrate what models and terrain this project is starting with, my combined ogres and empire armies:

Three things:
1. Everything in that picture looks amazing!
2. What's the story with that overgrown alligator in the corner? Did your fleet work for Captain Hook and took Tick Tock off his hands (such as they are)? :-P
3. How are planning to do the small pirate armies? Are they just random mercenary bands that took a liking to the seaways of the realms or are they part of a pirate empire with each army representing a high ranking captain's personal flotilla within the organization?
Really looking forward to hearing more on your project. :smile2:
-
looking forward to see this project evolve!
-
Always enjoyed your pirates. I'd like to see those ships up close! And those buidlings, are they all scratch built, and I don't mean the manor house and observatory.
-
Looks awesome man! I agree we need close ups :)
Also I can think of some sweet AoS scenarios with that table layout :)
-
Thanks, all!
The alligator stands in for a stonehorn. I've thought about taking one of those little flasks that came with the old 5th edition state troops and making a pocket watch...
Sadly, I don't have many close up pics at the moment. My mind is full of scenario ideas, though. I have a copy of Legends of the High Seas, and I'm looking forward to running some of those scenarios, too.
-
Some day I want to get me a copy of Legends of the High Seas.
-
Lots of good stuff in there, and I think the sailing rules and scenarios would dovetail well with Age of Sigmar.
Here is the best picture I have of the buildings. They are from the Games of War line of pirate supplies. The trees are from Weapons & Warriors, as are the two smaller ships in the picture above.

Oh man I get soooo many Assassin's Creed 4 vibes, by just looking at these pics. Simply stunning and awesome. :smile2:
-
Thank you very much!
Looking over the town, and keeping it safe from attack, is the fortress:

That's genius! :biggriin:
Awesome fortress and town as well. Really gives off a coastal vibe.
-
I like the use of the ship's cannons on the walls of the castle. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Thanks! They are also from Weapons and Warriors. They used to be on the galleon, but were really too big (stuck out above the sides rather than through the gun ports). When I replaced them with others, I found out that they are almost the perfect size for the fortress. Serendipity, I guess.
-
And for when people need to be able to storm the castle:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/SiegeTower_zpsfhn5bmjx.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/SiegeTower_zpsfhn5bmjx.jpg.html)

I picked these up last spring when there was so much uncertainty about the future of warhammer in the air. Plus, we've played quite a few siege battle using the blood in the badlands rules, and they are a lot of fun.
-
I just picked up this little number on ebay to add to may siege equipment.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Mortar_zpsp7zh4f09.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Mortar_zpsp7zh4f09.jpg.html)
Although, I might add it to my fleet to make a bomb ship...
-
I like it! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Very nice, love the siege equipment.
-
I concur. I love the wood grain on the old metal models, and on the siege tower (which is plastic) as well. Fun to paint, and pretty easy to get good results.
-
Believe I have 2 of those seige towers, and need to get them out, a project only half finished years ago. :icon_lol:
-
I really enjoyed the Blood in the Badlands rules for siege battles, but now Discoking's battle report http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,51284.0.html (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php/topic,51284.0.html) has me thinking about trying one for Age of Sigmar.

Here is the first group likely to come knocking on the door of the castle, Sharkbelly and his ogre Pirates.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010577.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010577.jpg.html)
The group also includes a surgeon (counts as a butcher or slaughtermaster). I added a grot orderly to be his helper. Several editions ago, he would have been a sword gnoblar.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010659_zpsa2c02537.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010659_zpsa2c02537.jpg.html)
The firepower for the group is provided by leadbelchers and a counts-as ironblaster.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/imagejpg3_zpsb6144c6e.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/imagejpg3_zpsb6144c6e.jpg.html)
Here is a closer look at the unit banner, with its gnoblar lookout.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010576.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010576.jpg.html)
The crew is made up of assorted scalawags, including a cook and a quartermaster. (Two of these have since joined the gunnery crew and one can double as a death wizard.)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010661_zps6d86ab0a.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ogre%20Pirates/P1010661_zps6d86ab0a.jpg.html)

And a giant.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/DoW%20Pirates/DSC00919.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/DoW%20Pirates/DSC00919.jpg.html)
-
They look great! But poor birdy!
-
A surprisingly good mesh of old and new Ogre minis. And that Giant! Wow! :eusa_clap:
-
Very nice stuff, I really like following this thread.
Now what are the chances of seeing these pirates in action with a battle report?
-
Absolutely fantastic looking models!
-
Thanks! Unfortunately no battle reports for some time, as everything is in storage back in the states...

I'[ve subbed your blog good sir. You've more than earnt it. :::cheers:::

This next entry is all about Sea Creatures:
A couple years back, I "borrowed" a Playmobil giant octopus from my kids. I cut it into pieces and glued them onto separate bases. I used contour putty to add some rippling water details.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/DSC01871.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/DSC01871.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/DSC01876.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/DSC01876.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/DSC01879.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/DSC01879.jpg.html)
The finished piece turned out like this:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/DSC01908.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/DSC01908.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/DSC01909.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/DSC01909.jpg.html)
Now last summer, a buddy gave me an extra Kraken he got from the Reaper Bones kickstarter. I've since gotten a Forge World Merwyrm as well. (Did you know that they hunt Kraken?!)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/Kraken_zpstvqnqvmz.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/Kraken_zpstvqnqvmz.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ships/Merwyrm_zpsgsaoat1p.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ships/Merwyrm_zpsgsaoat1p.jpg.html)
The Merwyrm will be part of a small Lothern Sea Guard force. How should I base them? And what colors should I use to paint them?
-
The merwyrm is a damned fine model. Looks like a shallows or coastal base is appropriate. Will you be using it as a dragon?
Don't know about the Kraken though, it already looks out of place being airborne.
-
I'm leaning toward a coastal base. I plan to use the stats for a beastman ghorgon.
-
Okay, the Merwyrm is the final piece to a small Sea Guard army that I've been putting together. I've had an eye on these guys since the Storm of Chaos came out. While never large enough to be an army of their own, in Age of Sigmar I think it will make a tidy little 50-wound force. Here's how it all sorts out:
Sea Helm on Skycutter
18 Lothern Sea Guard
Mage w/ annulian crystal
Bolt Thrower (mine is actually converted from leftover bits from the skycutter)
Merwyrm (using the stats for a ghorgon)
Mine are all grey plastic right now, but I'm hoping to start painting them this summer.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Sea%20Guard_zpsvcokmhzu.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Sea%20Guard_zpsvcokmhzu.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Bolt%20Thrower_zpsoxgfydf5.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Bolt%20Thrower_zpsoxgfydf5.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Merwyrm_zpsfzjxunzf.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Merwyrm_zpsfzjxunzf.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Skycutter_zpsdqx38whb.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Skycutter_zpsdqx38whb.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Mage_zpsyr4lbo9e.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Mage_zpsyr4lbo9e.jpg.html)
I've always liked the mage, and I think he fits the aesthetic of the rest of the group well.
-
The octopus from the kids set looks great! And I like how it can have it's tentacles removed as casualties. :eusa_clap:
The kraken looks good, and yet it is as if it has been modeled as being under the ocean. A good pose for such.
The Merwyrm is quite the model! Wow. :icon_cool:
-
Thanks! Yeah, the pose for the kraken is a bit different. I think I'm going to leave it as is, as if it's under the ocean. Might go well with a dwarf submarine...
-
The Octopus idea is ingenious. I also adore the Merwyrm model. Shame that FW is not making Warhammer Forge anymore. They had such great products.
-

Yeah, but although I like all the monsters, they were never particularly pushed like 30k, and I never got the impression FW were really into Warhammer, and were only doing a token effort. This shows just by the fact they've still not released AoS warscrolls for most of those monsters, or the Empire stuff. And today is the first hint that they're doing anything for AoS, and it looks like a big Khorne deamon, as if the game really needs another big Khorne daemon

They have put out a warscroll for the Dread Saurian though
-
Yeah, but AoS has been out for 6 months, where are the rest of the warscrolls?
On the FW blog thing on their site, they've sneak peaked an AoS model that is coming soon, A big Khorne daemon by the look of it. Like that's needed for AoS. :icon_rolleyes:
A friend of mine has recerntly emailed FW asking about eh Warscrolls. Their reply was that they're slowly working on them, but as the warscrolls are free, they are putting their time into stuff that can make them money, and for AoS, they have a couple of books in development.
While I'd probably buy a AoS warscrolls 'Monstrous Arcaum' equivalent, (my assumption is that what one of those book might be) I'd like to see a FW AoS campaign, that runs parallel to the main GW one, and they should make it very clear, that you can use FW models in any game of AoS. Previously with the rules, the monsters could only really be used in Storm of Magic games, which didn't really mean you'd see much use out of them.
-
There are still some Warhammer Forge World items listed on their site under the W:AoS area. Including some Imperials like Mananns Blades and Ironsides, although minimal across the board at best.
-
There's about half to two thirds of what they had at their peak for the Warhammer Forge Range. That pretty much died before End Times came along. The Dread Saurian is the most recent fantasy release, and that was 18 months ago? something like that. And that was about a year after the previous release of the river hag troll. Warhammer Forge was dead long before Warhammer itself.
I think it was an obvious death spiral though. They weren't making anything warhammer players wanted, and warhammer players weren't buying anything they produced. it's easy to see why they gave up, but it also felt like they didn't really care about WHF, especially in the lean months when big brother when 40k for a quarter.
They also lied about HH not impacting WHF, which it clearly did. And if they can't be interested in 40k or fantasy, why should we. It seems FW only love 30k. I'm glad Specialist Games is being run in the same way as FW, but not by FW. It will have it's own staff.
They should have actually properly started a separate division for Warhammer Forge, run by new staff then, and not by existing HH/40k players, who clearly didn't understand what WFB players wanted or needed
-
Well the blokes at FW clearly knew the direction that WFB was heading - into a shallow grave. From buisness perspective they had to concentrate on HH, which is their best product to date. I have a love/hate relationship with the Horus Heresy as a whole, but even I will admit that there are no better models than the ones from the HH range.
-

The performance of Warhammer Forge is another testimony to GW's philosophy of being a miniature-producing company first and foremost, which carried over to Forge World apparently. FW just produced seemingly random miniatures, which no one asked for. To have official rules for miniatures was very important to the majority of players AND collectors I think, but FW and GW never realized that apparently. Apart from that, most of the sculpts were not that great, so did not appeal to collectors either, which means that the whole thing was somehow doomed from the start.
PS.: I only just realized that I participated in hijacking this thread - I didn't know that there are project logs here too. Sorry for that. Nice army Sharkbelly! :::cheers:::
-
No problem.
Next up are the dwarves... er, Duardin. Since the pirates started as a Dogs of War army, it of course had to include Slayer P irates. I tried to go the cheap route and convert them from thunderers, but the results just weren't that great. Finally, when GW released the White Dwarf Pirate, I had to go for the classic slayer pirates.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/DSCN0359.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/DSCN0359.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/DSCN0358.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/DSCN0358.jpg.html)
Also, there is a cannon and crew that goes with them.
It's around 25 wounds; half the size of most of my small pirate armies. I'd like to add some irondrakes, but not sure what else. I've heard rumors of some new Duardin automaton that is set to come our soon...
-
Nice looking dwarfs there! :::cheers:::
-
Aaaaah Long D(r)ongs. I have a whole unit of these bad boys, all ready to get painted. If only I had the time... Anyway, great job with those pirates!
-
Thanks! I forgot to add a picture of the liquor pony:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/P1010475.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/P1010475.jpg.html)
My plan is to eventually fill out the army with some ironbreakers and irondrakes to be the heavy marines of the force.
After that, I'd like to build a dwarf steamship using the old metal steam tank and one of these Games of War pirate ships.
-
My next entry is a great example of a small unit that is now growing into its own army. I picked up a box of the dark elf corsairs and Lokhir Fellheart to use as Manflayers in my Dogs of War pirates. (I probably would have picked up the Fleetmaster as well, except that he came out after I was doing painting these guys and had moved on...) Then I added the Kharybdiss when that came out, and a sorceress as well.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/DoW%20Pirates/DSC00909.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/DoW%20Pirates/DSC00909.jpg.html)
The total army now looks like this:
Lokhir Fellheart
Dark Elf Sorceress
10 Corsairs
Kharybdiss and handlers
That's 32 wounds so far. They are all painted, although I seem to have gotten rather erratic with my photography last spring so I don't have pictures. I thought some river trolls would fit in well. (Corsairs like to take slaves, but anyone not fit for that job can be eaten by the trolls.)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ogre%20Pirates/DSC02740.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ogre%20Pirates/DSC02740.jpg.html)
That leaves about five wounds or so left, so I plan to get some Harpies to add in too. I also like the idea of adding a chaos familiar for the sorceress, so I picked up this little guy.
-
That pony model is a great addition. It's further back but that merwyrm is just wow. The painting on the belly is just fantastic.
-
Yeah, I wish I could claim it as my own. That's the Forge World job. I think I'm going to try to copy it, though.
-
Always had a soft spot for Lokhir and his lovecraftesque-kinda mask. Great job!
-
Thanks! I just placed an order on ebay for the five harpies. The army is all set now!
-
Next up are the undead pirates. This force tops out at over 100 wounds, but can scale down as needed.
It is lead by the Sartosan Vampire Lord on his flying boat (coven throne).
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Undead%20Pirates/CovenThrone.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Undead%20Pirates/CovenThrone.jpg.html)
Here is a close-up of him.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0130.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0130.jpg.html)
There are also lots of skeleton crewmen and a vampire boatswain.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0120.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0120.jpg.html)
There is a pack of ghouls, the remnant of a group of marooned mutineers who resorted to cannibalism.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0115.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Undead%20Pirates/DSCN0115.jpg.html)
And, when necessary, there are ghostly spirits to be summoned.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Undead%20Pirates/DSC02651.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Undead%20Pirates/DSC02651.jpg.html)
-
nice :)
-
Your spirit hosts are really, really cool. I never thought that such a simple paint job can work such wonders. Bravo! :eusa_clap:
-
And now for something completely different. I discovered a youtube channel by a guy who makes very cool scenery for his D&D games. It inspired me to try a project.
I came up with the idea for making a set of dungeon tiles for below my castle.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image.jpg1_zpsjgcbc4ij.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image.jpg1_zpsjgcbc4ij.jpg.html)
I wanted the entire thing to be a little less than 4'x4' (the footprint of the castle) and include things like food and water storage, guard rooms, dungeons, etc.
They are made from heavy cardboard. They were then primed, covered in a coat of "make it stone", and then covered in another coat of dark grey primer.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Paints_zpsjryazevb.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Paints_zpsjryazevb.jpg.html)
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Sprayed_zpsqc3jqpig.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Sprayed_zpsqc3jqpig.jpg.html)
After that, I dry-brushed them with a lighter grey to bring out the texture.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Finished_zpsu0duw3bl.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Finished_zpsu0duw3bl.jpg.html)
Here is the final result, populated with some Descent figures.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/With%20Models_zpsxg3rhjjs.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/With%20Models_zpsxg3rhjjs.jpg.html)
Another quick project from the same youtube channel made up some beds for the troops barracks.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Bedrolls_zpsltahnun3.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Bedrolls_zpsltahnun3.jpg.html)
When I get back to the states, I'll bring these with and populate more of the dungeon. I have an old model of the rack and a bid on a 28mm iron maiden to put in the torture chamber...
-
That's an awesome idea and execution of it! :-D
I like that you went with a barracks as well, when you finish that maybe you should make a ship interior as well. Give them rules for having to fight on a ship that rocking back and forth on the waves with all kinds of obstacles getting in the way. Could be fun.
-
You should probably link to the channel here, because I WANT TO SEE!
-
You bet:

Kickass! :biggriin:
-
Love the liquor pony ... 7th edition starter set, and I still need to paint mine. :::cheers:::
The undead ship, crew, etc., looks super!

Thanks! I used to love when White Dwarf would do a bit-by-bit breakdown of the new model kits that were coming out. Sets like the empire handgunners and outriders that had so many cool bits in them. The dwarf pony cart is also a favorite.
-
My next project is a mermaid. I am using one of the dark eldar prisoners. I have removed the manacles, cut off the legs, and roughed in a lower body.

Here is the finished model.

It might be just me, but that is one ugly ass transvestite looking mermaid!
Or she is trying to compete as mermaids first bodybuilder.

All that swimming gives her arms like Michael Phelps.

-
And now for something completely different: I am working on a party of undersea models from Reaper.
Here are the wereshark, the dark maiden, and the mermaid.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsaewnw9q3.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsaewnw9q3.jpeg.html)

Rokea alert!
Great stuff.
-
Rokea alert!
Great stuff.
Now to find a japanese hunter girl and go talk with that completely not suspicious man in a warehouse. :engel:
-
Hmm? I don't get the reference...
I added a few bad guys this morning. The Sea Hag and two Kelpies.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsepjgm0ui.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsepjgm0ui.jpeg.html)

-
It's from VTM: Bloodlines. At some point you meet a japanese teenage girl, who's hunting a Rokea, a were-shark. After you help her kill the thing, you can comment that it's good, that this thing did not had any tentacles. :-P
Anyway, the nasty sea critters are really nicely looking. What manufacturer makes these?
-
Ah, I see. These are from Reaper. The most recent three are reaper bones. The others are metal.
-
Ah, I see. These are from Reaper. The most recent three are reaper bones. The others are metal.
Reaper really increased the quality of their sculpts. I remember that they used to produce really ugly models...
-
The reaper bones stuff, for the most part, has been pretty fantastic. Details are good, shape is good, and really easy to convert. Sometimes they bend a bit but you can fix them real easy with a bit of hot water. (Before their painted anyway.)
That wereshark looks awesome. Look at the abs on it!
-
It has a 14-pack! :biggriin:
-
Two more up today: the Turtle Man and Barnacle Bill.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsty53tk01.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsty53tk01.jpeg.html)

-
I finally finished the first of three sea elves in the group.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpseqdte68n.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpseqdte68n.jpeg.html)

And now for the bad guy: the goroloth/aboleth.

-
The final two are done!
Here are the remaining sea elves:

-
Very nice marine-themed army! These figurines are truly gorgeous. :smile2:
-
Thanks! I'm looking forward to putting them to use some time.
-
Thanks! I'm looking forward to putting them to use some time.
Is there any aquatic-related Mordheim or Frostgrave warband?
-
Outstanding work, Sharkbelly! These models are amazing! :::cheers:::
What's Barnacle Bill's story, though? Messed with the wrong type of magic or just had some strange parentage? :-P
-
I don't know yet! I'm open to suggestions, though.
-
Oh, I love creating fluff. What's the general idea behind your merry(-time) band? Light hearted and adventurous or more serious?
-
Probably more serious. Guardians of the Deep sort of thing.
-
I really like the turtle man. His front plastron turned out looking great!
-
Thanks! I based in on the method I used for the old 5th edition lizardmen a LONG time ago.
Over the summer I picked up some spear tips. I'll be working on redoing a bunch of my spearmen (ship's crew armed with boarding pikes) over the next few weeks. Here's the test model:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsb9hrszl2.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsb9hrszl2.jpeg.html)
-
Ooh, those spearmen are going to look so cool.
Anyway, I guess I'm suffering from writer's block as I couldn't think of anything for Barnacle Bill's story except the cliched cursed treasure angle. So to make up for that (and try to get my drawing inspiration back) I sketched out his origin.
(http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah64/baronn1991/Mobile%20Uploads/1475570061004_zpslzhobdje.jpg) (http://s1377.photobucket.com/user/baronn1991/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1475570061004_zpslzhobdje.jpg.html)
"Captain Bill did not find his fortune on the mouldy decks of that sunken cursed ship. His crewmen turned into scuttling crabs and him only narrowly avoiding the same fate, Captain Bill seeks revenge on the mutinous dog that sent him on that doomed venture..."
(Sorry if not my best work, still recovering from a back injury so had to draw lying down. :-P)
-
Oh yeah, more work from Baron! :smile2:
-
I know, it's been way too long. :-P
-
I know, it's been way too long. :-P
Damn right it was. Good to have you back man. :)
-
Hey, that's great. Do you draw for a living or as a hobby?
Here is the rest of the unit with the new spear tips:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsaqt9affa.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsaqt9affa.jpeg.html)
-
Just a hobby of mine.
Those sea dogs look as impressive as I knew they were going to be. Really look ready for a fight. (And a swig of rum afterwards  )
Had a bit of a double take with the soldier behind the drummer, looked like he was wearing a skull mask. :-P
-
You're right! :icon_eek: I didn't catch that the first time.
-
Here they are all painted.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpso1h5ndyr.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpso1h5ndyr.jpeg.html)
-
Those spears look great! The militia kit was one of the best things GW ever did.
Also more Baron artwork! Woo!
-
Agreed! I remember when it came out, and I realized I could have as many of the militia guys from Mordheim as I wanted. Good stuff!
-
I just put the finishing touches on a small unit of harpies to round out my dark elf corsairs.

-
Holy cow, those look great! :icon_eek:
About the Free Company box, I remember when I first bought the box on a whim and joyously discovered the treasure trove of bits. :-D
Great work on the spears, Sharkbelly. Though maybe now you should work work some tribal troops who wear large skull masks, certainly would be unique. :-P
@Gankom, Haha, thanks for the cheer. Expect to see more soon, I'm working on a project to help inspire the AoS thread.
-
I'm a huge sucker for the Lockhir Fellheart model, and his incredible Cthulhu mask. Stunning work.
-
Thank you very much! I really like how they all turned out.
Last night I finished up the Innkeeper and his daughter for the Old Sea Dog tavern.

Those Bloodsail Island models are great! Unfortunately, they came out after I made my own ogre pirate army...

A model worthy of being your avatar. :biggriin:
-
Thank you very much! I really like how they all turned out.
Last night I finished up the Innkeeper and his daughter for the Old Sea Dog tavern.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsmcgitgjg.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsmcgitgjg.jpeg.html)
Very nice! :biggriin:
Just by looking at his daughter I can imagine the "mysterious disappearances" of many a drunken sailor. Surely her father has no clue of what unfornate fate befell them.
-
That's right. Now, up next is my small Lothern Sea Guard army:
Sea Helm on Skycutter
Mage w/ annulian crystal
18 Lothern Sea Guard
Bolt Thrower
Merwyrm
All I had time for was this guy, the mage's familiar:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zps2aylf5un.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zps2aylf5un.jpeg.html)

I went with a different color on the base than my previous models, and I'm thinking about redoing the others in the same color. It's an acrylic paint from the craft store that is a lot cheaper than model paints.
-
Cool seagull (no pun intended). Where's this model from? :smile2:
-
It's an extra bit from the Lothern Skycutter sprue.
-
I like some of the water creatures, especially the turtle dude! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
And enjoyed seeing the spearmen, too! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap:
-
I added some sharks. First, I bought a Shark TOOB at the toy store.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/20161105_100456_zpsklev0vxs.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/20161105_100456_zpsklev0vxs.jpg.html)
Then, I made up some bases for them.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/20161103_210916_zpsaddbjnm6.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/20161103_210916_zpsaddbjnm6.jpg.html)

Finally, I've started painting up sharks based on pictures I find online.

Here are a few more sharks and a manta ray.

-
These are very cool. What sort of warscroll can be applied to these guys?
-
Not sure... I plan to use them more for D&D than Age of Sigmar.
I ordered one of Frontline Gaming's ocean mats today. They're a little pricey, but are on sale right now. Should be perfect for ship battles.

-
This army is really nice and has a cool motive. I'd love to see some batreps with it.
-
Hopefully some time soon! I don't have a group to play with at the moment...
In the meantime, lots of painting. Here is the base for the Merwyrm so far.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsqtzofmzt.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsqtzofmzt.jpeg.html)
-
I finally finished up the Merwyrm. I made both a land base and a sea base for it.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsotknxw7d.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsotknxw7d.jpeg.html)

-
Whoa, great work on the Merwyrm. I always loved the big beasties from FW. Shame they've ditched their WFB range, long before the AoS.
-
At least with Age of Sigmar it's a lot easier to include some of these great beasties in your army.

I've been working on a pirate themed Empire army for YEARS now. I've had to 'reshuffle' it a lot in recent years to get the 'classical' pirate look. NONE of the models wear armour [except for the militia heads which have helmets or the militia 'armoured' arm that came with that kit]. I've nearly finished it. Once I add a couple of ogre's it'll be FINALLY ready
-
Sounds great! I'd love to see some pictures of it. After the elves, I have some dwarves to work on.
-
Or before the elves...
Over the holiday, I picked up some dwarfs to add to my small force.
5 ironbreakers and 5 irondrakes. I put them together last night.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsuquzmi0x.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsuquzmi0x.jpeg.html)
This weekend I hope to assemble the gyrocopter/submarine...
-
Ah, submariner dwarfs. Threw me for a second on why you'd collect them for your aquatic army but that makes perfect sense. :smile2:
@Rowsdower, Good luck on finishing your imperial pirates! Certainly sounds like you put alot of care into it by filtering out most of the armored bits for sheer visual effect.
-
Get some Long Drong Slayers. They're more than perfect for your army (and gorgeous models too!) :smile2:
-
Already did! And the White Dwarf Pirate, too.

Some homemade water elementals.

-
The elementals look pretty good bug I love those dwarfs. The white dwarf model is looking snazzy.
-
Thanks! It cost a pretty penny, but it fit with the theme so well that I had to...
I finished painting up some tents from Renedra. I like how they turned out. I am really impressed with the quality of the models!
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsxhkmplte.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsxhkmplte.jpeg.html)
-
Love those tents ! How big are they compared to a miniature?
-
Each one is a little shorter than an Imperial soldier. Pretty good scale.
-
Oh man, these look sooooo good.
-
They do look good. They look like a good scale. Get a couple of them together and make a small camp.
-
Indeed. The set comes with a little campfire and a couple of cots. I paid about $12 for them, and I am really impressed with how sturdy they are.
-
This guy is the penultimate model in my Araby warband. It includes a character model for each core class in the new D&D 5th edition player's handbook. It would also make a great group of themed heroes for Aos or Warhammer. After him, only the warlock is left.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpschcwl5sl.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpschcwl5sl.jpeg.html)

And here is the final one, the warlock.

-
nice one! Getting along nicely here!
-
I love that old school mage. Generally older Empire Wizards are much better looking, then the new ones.
-
I added a few more underwater models today; a giant shark and a giant octopus.

This has all the makings of being super cool!
-
I see some serious hobby time well spent here! :eusa_clap:
Following.

-
Thanks, all. I'm in the process of priming this ship and one other, but I took a few moments to paint up this guy (for all the Spelljammer fans out there):

I finally finished painting up this longboat from Games of War. Turns out it's just the right size for my Dwarf Slayer Pirates.

Just kidding. But I have made a topwater marker for it, along with a torpedo to fire at ships.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Torpedo_zpstwrs0o2o.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Torpedo_zpstwrs0o2o.jpg.html)
-
I'm not kidding, this is fenominal! Just love your markers. Cant wait for the submarine.
-
The markers are hilarious. I love em!
That long boat is also the perfect size indeed! Good to see those slayers getting their sea legs.
-
I agree! They've been without a ship for too long. Soon they'll have two ships and a gyrocopter/submarine.
-
And now for something completely different: Giff artillery officer for Spelljammer.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Giff%20Officer_zpscdr5dd26.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Giff%20Officer_zpscdr5dd26.jpg.html)
-
Man, this is one of the coolest, themed armies that I've ever seen. Splendid! :eusa_clap:
-
Thanks! It's a bit random at the moment.
Meanwhile, the dwarf steamship is coming along nicely!
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsrlmhqsnq.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsrlmhqsnq.jpeg.html)

That's some nice woodwork. I have a soft spot for boats and ships. My dad was a master modler as he made all his ships from scrap woods, carving and shaping and working rigging. You can actually put all his ships in a pond and sail them. This is one he's gave me named after my mom. The sails are actually linen soaked out of original blueprint paper he picked up in Great Britain years ago. Almost out of supply now. This is actually a really simple model compared to his 4 and five master models.

-
Wow! Beautiful!
-
Awesome work Artoban. :smile2:
-
Thanks for the comments guys. The old man was pretty good at his stuff. He lived and breathed sailing ships and started building them when he was 12. Still has that first model. I could round up some other pics but I probably should put them under another thread. This thread is for Sharks amazing creations. I still havnt got over your markers a little further up the thread 😸
-
Thank you for sharing. Working on model trains with my dad was one of the things that led me to war gaming. :-)
The steam ship is just about done! Not sure if I want to put an organ gun in the back or a landing pad for the gyrocopter.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsr5e2ienv.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsr5e2ienv.jpeg.html)
-
By Sigmar, go for the Gyro pad. I can see it with my mind's eye and it is glorious.
-
Beautiful! And I have to agree with Xath, the gyro pad would be awesome.
-
Gyrocopter it is! In the meantime, here is the ship with the steam parts removed and a sail instead.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpseqf5hdwv.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpseqf5hdwv.jpeg.html)
-
Very cool. You can get a lot of pirates in that hull. It looks like you forgo the little side canons for this option.
-
I have some that I could put in there, but not the same ones. The ones for the steam ship are only halves made from leftover drakeguns. .
-
More oceany goodness here! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
I aim to please. :-)
To that end, here is the finished gyrocopter/submarine!
Here is the sub:

And here is the gyrocopter with a sea base:

And the torpedo and periscope:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsrbhs4lkj.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsrbhs4lkj.jpeg.html)

Well done!

Ditto 👆
I think I want a sub like that of my own. A real one 😺
Can't wait for a game report using all these in the Water Realm - if one exists
-
 :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
I can't even begin to describe how amazing and clever that is.
Well done!
Me too. This is simply stunning. The details, the atmosphere that these models generate - they're incredible.
-
Thanks all. I am working on a bunch of underwater models, some of which you have already seen. Others will be coming later. :-)
-
I love the copter submarine! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
Please share your recipe for the blue?
-
It's a base of a reaper color called Deep Ocean, highlighted with an older GW color called Hawk Turquoise.
-
I also used it on these ironbreakers, and will use it one five irondrakes:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zps30fslfio.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zps30fslfio.jpeg.html)
-
This shade of blue works really well with these figurines. I like it. :smile2:
-
Here are the five irondrakes. That completes my small dwarf army for now.

Dat aquatic theme, dat aquatic theme tho...

Sharkbelly, you might like what is coming soon
(https://17890-presscdn-0-51-pagely.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/GAMA-KO-ArkanautIronclad-Content.jpg)
-
Gah! Looks like my army just got bigger. :-)
-
I somehow think GW owes you royalties for starting this trend 😺
-
Awwww yes, that little bugger will fit perfectly into your glorious, aquatic host.
-
Hah! Maybe just a little credit.
In the meantime, I have started up the Lothern Sea Guard again. Here is the mage:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsss8kdpda.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsss8kdpda.jpeg.html)
-
Love the seaguard! One of my favourite elf units. That Mage looks terrific. I can't quite make out what he is holding. If I had to guess it would be a gyroscope.
-
I tried to make it look like a miniature globe. But it is very small...
-
Love the seaguard! One of my favourite elf units. That Mage looks terrific. I can't quite make out what he is holding. If I had to guess it would be a gyroscope.
I think it's supposed to be an Anulli cristal, a magic foci for HE mages.
-
I think you're right. I may make it a solid color, like purple or something.
Meanwhile, here are some wreckage counters I've been working on for ship battles.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Wreckage%20Counters%201_zps2hiexqoc.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Wreckage%20Counters%201_zps2hiexqoc.jpg.html)
-
Why do those floating barrels remind me of an old book about a short guy with big feet?
-
These markers are excellent. Probably a lot of fun to make as well. Can't help thinking that they may be excellent dwarven rum in those 😺
-
If there is, the Dwarves will send the steamship out to pick them up!
Here they are painted. The barrles are from renedra. I used two to make the wreckage and then assembled the rest.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Wreckage%20Counters%202_zpsvsiordlw.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Wreckage%20Counters%202_zpsvsiordlw.jpg.html)
-
Oh ho, nice job! :eusa_clap:
Maybe if you're bored you can also make ship-wrecked sailor clinging to that flotsam for some extra flavor. :-D
Anyway, saw you asking questions about the Overlord's airships at Bugmen's? here's a pic of them in case you were still curious.
Because posting images, and not just links, is important.

I plan to! I have to grab a few figures from back home, first.
-
Great looking markers. You paint water really, really well. :smile2:
-
Thanks! When you go all in on pirates, I guess you get a lot of practice!
I finally finished the crew for my skycutter:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zps5h1neohx.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zps5h1neohx.jpeg.html)
Here is the Sky Helm on his own base:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsq40vvq1q.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsq40vvq1q.jpeg.html)
I also knocked out a reaper bathalian (mind flayer):
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsakceqzbj.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsakceqzbj.jpeg.html)
-
I decided next to do the sea chariot. It is pulled by a hippocampus and ridden by a marid. Both are from Reaper.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsmfrlqxos.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsmfrlqxos.jpeg.html)
I base-coated the hippocampus in light blue and then washed with blue ink. For the marid, I base-coated with orange and inked with flesh wash. I'm hoping for a color somthing like coral.
-
The hippocampus is beautiful. Actual sea shell right?
-
Yes! I found it on the beach and thought hmm... what could I make with that?
-
These guys are great! Don't know if it's feasible but someday a group shot of your collection would be magnificent.
-
Thanks! I'll try to do that some time.
Here is the finished chariot:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsqbtmgqfh.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsqbtmgqfh.jpeg.html)
-
Holy cats! I had no idea where this was going lol (my usual grasp of things). Really cool as it all makes sense now 😺
-
Your sea-themed models are incredible. Splendid stuff!
-
Thanks! Another update:
The Lothern Sea Guard are nearly there--14 of 19 finished. Only five more to go!
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Sea%20Guard_zpspnsopfbc.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Sea%20Guard_zpspnsopfbc.jpg.html)
-
Great looking SG and with my favorite HE mage to boost!
-
Love the sea guard and the whole idea around them. Looking really good. I have to admit that Mage is pretty cool. I have the one standing on a spiral of magic (?)
-
The final five, including the command group, are now finished! The bolt thrower is the last thing left...
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zps8cmzirof.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zps8cmzirof.jpeg.html)
-
That blue and gold really works well on these guys. They definetly have that marine-like look to them. :)
-
I just finished this guy, a Desert Thing from Reaper:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpszcqb21fb.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpszcqb21fb.jpeg.html)
-
I love it with all my heart!!
Looks like Jabba the Huts fun pit creature only on a smaller scale. Or what we could imagine was at the bottom of that hole.
-
:-)
I also knocked out the bolt thrower this morning. My small Lothern Sea Guard army is now finished.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/image_zpsff7ft4hw.jpeg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/image_zpsff7ft4hw.jpeg.html)
-
Long weekend, so I managed to finish up a storm giant and cloud giant.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Storm%20Giant%20and%20Cloud%20Giant_zpskw21lboz.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Storm%20Giant%20and%20Cloud%20Giant_zpskw21lboz.jpg.html)
-
I've also started work on a party of adventurers for D&D, and there are some great old Empire models in the group:
Druid
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Druid_zpskobjxero.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Druid_zpskobjxero.jpg.html)
Wizard

Monk

Bard
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Bard_zpsm43wo0zo.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Bard_zpsm43wo0zo.jpg.html)
Ranger
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Ranger_zpskupyekku.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Ranger_zpskupyekku.jpg.html)
-
Some great Empire & Mordheim classics indeed!
Trying to guess where the Monk comes from... Mordheim Kislevite with the halberd point cut off?
Also saw that Storm Giant (male) in the earlier post. I've got him on my desk, in Bones plastic. Big problems with the bendy sword, so decided to replace it completely. Is your model plastic, and if so, did you need to bend the sword back into form?
-Z
-
I like the color scheme for your elves! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
-

-Z
Ding ding! Winner! The reaper giants are bones. I warmed 'em up, bent the swords into place, and cooled 'em off. Seems to be working so far.
-
:::cheers:::
The Bones boiling water bending method didn't work very well for me in most cases. Nice to hear at least someone is happy with the results. :-)
-Z
-
As usual, very stunning. Although not a dnd player, I like the idea of putting together groups of characters. That's why I think I'll like skirmish so much.
-
Awesome looking models! I really like the retro-feel to them. :eusa_clap:
-
Thanks! So I finally got a chance to set up some terrain on a new battle mat.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Village_zpsaiwstrf6.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Village_zpsaiwstrf6.jpg.html)
-
Beautiful!
Sharkbelly - can I ask why your excellent thread is here instwad of the B&P?
I think lots of people might be missing your excellent work!
-
Umm, I think I might have started it in the wrong place... :icon_confused:
-
Did you want me to move it? Its your thread...
-
Sure! Let's do it.
-
Where'd that terrain mat come from? Your terrain looks wonderful!
-
Wow!! Congrats! Nice gameboard!
-
That one is the Forgotten Realm mat from gamemat.eu.
This one is from Frontline Gaming:
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x147/sharkbelly/Fleet_zpsvhg8azqt.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/sharkbelly/media/Fleet_zpsvhg8azqt.jpg.html)
-
Holy crap, what an awesome water effect!
-
Great new terrain mats mate!
:::cheers:::
-
Thanks, all.
Over the summer, Photobucket decided to no longer host images for free. I've now switched to a new hosting site.
My current project is a set of Adventuring Kids and a pug dog from Reaper. Here they are primed:
The little pug is already nearly finished:

Cute little pug. :biggriin:
-
Thanks!
Here is the finished party:
-
And here are some Spelljammer-esque minis that I have been working on:
Githyanki
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/166057147/medium.jpg)
Rogue
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/166057148/medium.jpg)
Cleric

Oriental Sorcerer
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/166057150/medium.jpg)
-
were the kids from the bones series? steveb
-
Nope, metal. As far as I know they have yet to be "bonesified."
-
I finished up a couple of older, classic models to add to Bertrand and his band.

-
Cool! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
-
Ah the Merry Men of Bretonnia. Always good to see them. I love their models. :biggriin:
-
Me too!
The rest of the band is now finished.
-
I picked up a new 'Ard Case over the holidays. I have packed it full of models and am getting ready to fly half way around the world. I'll let you all know how it all turns out!
-
Those look like perhaps older Bretonnian metal archers. :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
-
They are!
-
They're Bret Squires on foot. Lovely models. The group here with Bertrand & his fellows is a classic, and beautifully done. :eusa_clap:
I've got three spare Squires, should someone here fancy them. (Not cheap, though.) ;)
-Z
-
I am pleased to report that all of the models made it safely, even after a three-day, round-the-world trip. Even the bat swarms are in great shape. I love this new case. It's a little smaller than the Crusade, but holds around 75% of what the CC can. Fits easily under the seat on airplanes.
-
I have to ask it. You don’t have to answer but what was it that made you encircle the globe?
With an army no less?
-
Best of luck with your endeavors Sharkbelly.
-
I've been working overseas for the last few years. But I went home to the U.S. for Christmas. :-)
-
So when I flew back, I brought some terrain with me. Only the suitcase went missing. I started to think I might never see it again. I am glad to say that it has returned, and all contents are safe.
I would have hated to lose several OOP sets...
-
I'm glad for you too. Great OOP terrain pieces, nicely painted. Would have been a terrible loss if they went missing.
-Z
-
Good to know ya still got them. :::cheers:::
-
So this fellow is just about finished.
-
Awesome!!
I may have asked this before but what game will be played with these guys and I know you have a megaton pile of models, would it be possible to get a group shot? That may indeed be asking a bit much.
-
This guy will be for a D&D game down the road. I'll share a pic of all the underwater models at some point.
-
nice sea monster dawg
-
Woah, where'd that squid model come from?
Looks great! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Thanks! It's from Reaper.
-
Just finished some rat swarms and giant rats.
-
Awesome work, but for some reason, they're creepy af!
-
Thanks! That's what I'm hoping for.
-
I added three more heroes to my warband/adventuring party.
Bretonnian Paladin
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/167113416/medium.jpg)
Imperial Noble
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/167113418/medium.jpg)
Warrior Priest
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/167113419/medium.jpg)
-
Fanastic! Great characters all. Especially the paladin and priest.
-
I love those oldschool WQ minis soooo much. Great work. :smile2:
-
Thanks!
Tomorrow they'll face off against this guy and a horde of skellies and dire wolves.
-
We played the first game in the campaign today. The heroes searched a village looking for a seer woman whose powers of augury could help them locate the secret lair of the vampire. But the enemy was hunting for her too...
-
What rules are being used?
-
Love those houses. I feel mine are way too big. It wouldn’t take much to make a village for sure. Paint it like a Newfoundland coastal town if you want every colour in the book.
-
What rules are being used?
It's Age of Sigmar, with each player running a hero.
-
You've used skirmish rules? That table looks great. :smile2:
-
Yup, we use the basic rules with each player running a 5-wound hero. That way it plays a little like an RPG but with faster, simpler combats. We only have around an hour for each session.
-
Great job on those characters :eusa_clap:
-
We played the next game in the campaign today. The heroes ventured into the Caverns of the Ghouls to recover a magic sword. Ghouls, bats, and a couple Vargheists guard it. Although two heroes fell in battle, they carried the day.

I am liking this!👆
-
Very cool.
I feel like the tunnel format was based on the subterrain from Heroes of M&M 3?
-
Adding on this again to say how cool is that! Since it hit the shelves, I loved the silver tower game thinking that will be on the wish lid sometime. Going to have to ramp this up, especially seeing the terrain your introducing.
-
Very cool.
I feel like the tunnel format was based on the subterrain from Heroes of M&M 3?

And some camels to carry their gear:
-
Great project sir! From which company those camels are coming from? I think Foundry has some good ones from the Perrys.
-
Man those are awesome!
-
Thanks! The camels are Reaper Bones. Quite inexpensive.

We played the next game in the campaign yesterday. The heroes entered a haunted graveyard in search of another artifact to help in their quest.
Here is the setup at the beginning of the game:

Awesome table! Looks like fun.
-
Like the Arabyan Adventurers! :eusa_clap:
Nice gaming too.
-Z
-
Very cool.
I feel like the tunnel format was based on the subterrain from Heroes of M&M 3?
What's M&M 3? Mazes & Monsters?
All good. I guess there is only so many ways to do tunnels, so of course it would look similar anyway  Never mind me.
-
Like the Arabyan Adventurers! :eusa_clap:
Nice gaming too.
-Z
Me too. Fantastic looking table.
-
Thank you!
It looks like GW are re-releasing rules for older models, cleaned up and without some of the early AoS silliness:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/legends/
Here you’ll find complete rules for warriors, heroes and monsters from the world-that-was, alongside a brief summary of their background and play style.
These should be great for more Warhammer Quest stuff!
-
:::cheers::: :::cheers:::
So much coolness since last I checked (which might have been just last week or so...)
-
Thank you! I have some more to share.
We played the next game in the campaign today. The heroes were tasked with taking out a watch tower guarded by the undead.
Here they are getting ready to attack.
A strigoi ghoul king emerges atop the tower.
He descendeds to attack his mortal enemy, the warrior priest. Meanwhile the slayers are locked in combat with zombies.
After dispatching the zombies, the slayers find the necromancer.
After a hard-fought battle, the day is won.
-
Really cool sharkbelly! This seems like enormous fun. Those zombies and necro were just the slayers working up an appetite for breakfast.
-
Looks like fun!
-
Really great looking game :::cheers:::
-
Good to see some dead-bois, getting sent back to the ground. That Slayer meant buisness! :::cheers:::

Pbase.com--very reasonably prices. I switched to them after Photobucket had its big price hike.

We played the next game in the campaign today. The heroes tracked the vampire to his lair. The undead creature was protected by his army of skeletons and a wight king as well as a horde of rats.
The Paladin and Dwarf Lord broke off to take on the wight and some skellies, while one of the Slayers dove into the rat swarms.
The vampire attacked the other heroes. It was a bloody fight, but they defeated him. However, he turned to mist a drifted back into the castle.
With the vampire gone, the Slayers could double-team the rats.
In the end, the heroes know the only way to defeat the Vampire for good would be to go into the castle and find his tomb.
-
Oh man, getting some strong Warhammer Quest vibes from this one. I can't wait to see the grand bash with the Vampire.
-
The heroes entered the dungeon. They descended to the throne room and battled ghouls there.
Reinforcements from the storage room and torture chamber joined the fight.
The elf decided to split off on his own.
The heroes reached the vampire's crypt.
The gargoyles animated and defended the vampire.
Finally the heroes defeated the gargoyles and staked the vampire.
-
Love it.
-
Love the dungeon setting :::cheers:::
-
Ditto👆
What are you using for the dungeon tunnels?
-
They are homemade. Sheet of styrofoam--like foam core but without the paper--scored with a grid and then rolled with a ball of aluminum foil for texture. Paint and done.
-
Good riddance you fangy git. :-P
-
Ha! I read that as "fancy" first.
-

Looks great :::cheers:::

Ingenious!
Truly miniature hobbyists see the world differently - full of possibilities.

-
Thanks! I can't take the credit, though. I learned how to do it from a youtube video:
These doors are all my creation, though.

-
More terrain fun for over the summer:
-
Great scenic loot :::cheers:::
-
Wow, this terrain looks baller. I like it a lot!
-
The terrain projects continue. I finally got around to putting the Numinous Occulum together. It only took a little bit of green stuff to close the gap...
-
What will it be exactly?
-
Only a little... wow
-
I have a gap like that on my Grifhound I'm working on. :(
That's one of the things I always struggled with when it came to scenery. I'm terrible with green stuff so I never want to start painting until all the gaps are filled in, yet I never get around to doing it because I hate working with green stuff.
My buddy meanwhile is sculpting extra fur and hair on every model he can get his hands on, and I can barely make a little tube and stick it in the gaps.
-
Ha! I know what you mean.
-
So I finished up some terrain pieces that I've had for a while.
The Ophidian Archway:
The Numinous Occulum:
And the Baleful Relmgate:
-
Very nice work! This *should* inspire me to make more scenery, but as I rarely play games any more it has even less priority than painting miniatures...
-
Nice work! :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
I regret not purchasing more of those kits (except when I look at all of the ones I have never put together...)
-
Nice work! :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
I regret not purchasing more of those kits (except when I look at all of the ones I have never put together...)
I'm just like that. I always thought they were amazing kits, and see how nicely their painted like here really makes me wish I'd got some. Yet at the same time I remember that I must have half a dozen different scenery kits put aside that I built and never finished painting.
-
Terrain is one of my favorite things to paint. It seems like for the results you get, it takes not as much time.
-
And now for something completely different, as the saying goes. I've begun the process of re-basing some old WOTC Star Wars metal characters that I painted a while back. I've added a little height to each base, and now they will be more consistent with the new Star Wars Legion models. I hope you enjoy them.
The first is the Cerean Jedi. This guy was my character in the Living Force campaign for many years.
Next up is the Human Male Fringer.
Last, for now, is a Warhammer 40K model that I painted up do be a human soldier.
-
Kudos for the old school Cadian Guardsman. Looks great!
-
Thanks!
-
I like how the star wars guys turned out! The cadian fits in pretty good as well.
-
Thanks! I've been pretty busy with work, so no real updates lately. :-(
-
Okay, I've finally gotten around to some Greenskins that have been in a box for a while. I think these guys will make a nice complement to my ogres.
-
The first eight are done. Time for the next eight! (I'll base them all when they are done.)
-
Really nice! I really like those starter kit guys. Did a recent ork army and resurrected 30 of the archers and 30 of the double choppas
-
I really like those starter models too for a number of reasons.
I converted about 50 of the archer models by cutting off the arrows, keeping the quiver, putting other baggage and equipment on them, doing arm swaps with torches and the random weapons, and made them look like a couple of units of looters. My inspiration was the two metal special models they released way back when - one carrying a pig and a torch, and another with a spear and torch.
The double choppa guys are great too, because 2/4 of them have more armour, which is better than the 1/4 from the plastic multi-pose set, which means they make good 'Big Unz' as they look like they are equipped better.
-
Lovin' that 6th edition set. :::cheers:::
-
Liking the painted scenery! The orcs are looking great too! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
I've been stockpiling cheaply acquired orcs for WAAAGH! Konrad. Probably half or more of the common boyz are 6th edition starter set ones like those. I'm going to make 100 of them, in 4 units of 25 each, with dual choppas and bows. Archers will get an extra weapon stashed somewhere, while choppa boyz will get bows and quivers slung on the back. All kinds of extra bitz will replace heads and arms here and there to add variety. A few will even have various other looted ranged weapons than bows for the sake of variety.
-
Sounds cool! Please share it when they are in progress.
-
16 Orc Arrer Boyz finished!
-
Awesome!
-
The 18 Orc Warriors are finished.
Here is the Waaagh! as it stands now.
Next up are 10 goblin wolf riders.
-
Oh, man, those are great! I've always wanted to get my hands on these orcs.
Back when I first started checking out all the coolness that Warhammer proved to be [during 6th ed], there was a GW Portugal site. As a brazilian, I've dove in head first there, and there was a translation of a battle report using the 6th ed starter box, with Empire and Orcs duking it out. I recall I was simply astonished by the small narrative and the figurines and the battle schematics, all in Portuguese [except for the unit names, which I think were in Spanish].
That was what swung me hard and deep into Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
Great work on the figures!
-
Thank you!
The wolf riders are now finished as well, along with one orc boar rider.
-
Love the old green (https://imgfast.net/users/2514/33/17/38/smiles/387809.gif)
-
Boar rider on a square base?
-
Yeah, I needed one and it was the only extra I had around. I might move him to a cavalry base later.
-
Thats ok. I was just thinking you had a unique idea there for something game-wise. Gives me ideas! Great job by the way. He looks good too!
-
The gobbos had their bases flocked this morning. They are nearly finished.
-
And here they are all done.
-
Very nice!
I have a unit of these guys. One of my first few purchases way back when. The night goblins became my favourite faction for many years. Still maybe my favourite.
-
I hear that they might be getting an update soon for AoS!...
Here is the start of the Boar Chariot. This is the last little project before departing for the holidays.
-
And here it is finished.
I re-based a few more Star Wars models as well.
-
Liking the greenskins. :smile2:
-Z
-
Thanks! Perhaps you will like these two as well: new characters for my Destruction army.
-
These guys are awesome!
I don’t recognize the models but they are great
-
Orcs and goblins look great! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
Where'd that barbarian like dude come from?
-
The one on top is Grumlok and Gazbag (based on Warhammer Online, I think). The one on the bottom is an old Ogre Tyrant.
-
Here they are finished.
-
I always liked that Tyrant model. My main gaming buddy plays Ogres and had several of them, and it brings back memories of some bloody last stands and assaults against those beasts.
-
Very nice. That's one of my favorite things about finishing some of these old models: the memories they recall.
-
Grumlok and Gasbag are quickly becoming an all time favourite of mine. You have done them proper justice!
-
Thank you!
-
Here is an update. I've decided to shift focus in the first part of 2019 to painting my Star Wars Legion models. Here is what I have done so far:
The Emperor
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168740877/large.jpg)
His Royal Guard
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168740878/large.jpg)
Chewbacca and his Wookiee Friends
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168740880/large.jpg)
And some terrain, including vaporators and comm terminals
(http://www.pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168740876/large.jpg)
-
Looking very good! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Cool. Why so many wookies?
-
A whole squad of them.
-
Cool. Why so many wookies?
Because Wookies are awesome! COme on Warlord, that should be obvious!
-
Ha! That's right!
Lots of updates on the star Wars front:
Vader
(https://pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168770254/large.jpg)
Stormtroopers
(https://pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168770255/large.jpg)

Weapons Lockers
(https://pbase.com/sharkbelly/image/168770257/large.jpg)
-
Wow! I haven't updated for a while. I've been painting a lot more Star Wars stuff, but here are two more Empire guys for Warhammer Quest:

-
And a few accessories for my Landship.
-
Okay, I'm finally getting back to Warhammer stuff after a Star Wars hiatus. Here is the old Battlemasters gun crew.
I also painted a random RPG character.
-
Good to see these! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Next up are Bloodreavers and an aspiring champ.

-
Actually, I put those guys on hold and jumped in with some Underworlds stuff instead.
-
Purple looks great on skellies!
-
That’s a cool looking warband!
-
I like 'em! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap:
-
Thanks, all! I have finished the Briar Queen as well.

-
Excellent. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Stuff is looking as awesome as always!
-
Thank you very much! I really like these new models. Great character and detail. I added the Grymwatch to this group as well. Here is the whole family photo:
-
Interesting. Do you have any pics at a lower angle?
-
I will take some more pics when I get the chance.
-
Cool pics and the minis are really nice. I have the skellies to use in my VC army.
-
Nice! They are great sculpts.
-
Alright, after focusing on Star Wars for so long, I finally got around to painting some giant spiders. At some point I will do their riders, too.
(https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/p720x720/107135228_10157703686108198_5470685690273290257_o.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_sid=1480c5&_nc_ohc=HtfOBG1h_KIAX8Exo_V&_nc_ht=scontent-sea1-1.xx&_nc_tp=6&oh=f7c67f8dda6ee1ae6400c071f7d51648&oe=5F30DAAB)
-
AWESOME!!!!
-
Pretty spiders!
-
I like the red, it meant this post didn't immediately trigger my arachnophobia!
-
Looks grand!
Have you given two of them armor for their front legs? It looks like those legs are encased in some sort of protective sheath.
-
Thanks, all. I went with a bone color on the front legs, taken from these guys:

I recently finished my Tabletop World Manor. Here it is paired with the Warhamer Fortress:
-
That noble wanted to guard his house! :icon_wink: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
I love that fortress!!
Looks awesome Shark!
-
Thank you! My latest project is eggs for the spiders. BBs covered in white glue and paint and then a little bit of an old dryer sheet for the webs.
(https://scontent-msp1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/116122125_10157760001798198_1756857245168257073_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_sid=ca434c&_nc_ohc=k2PukPdGoNcAX8HuLQO&_nc_ht=scontent-msp1-1.xx&oh=21543cde0f6a2a3d3553bf177689f262&oe=5F4B921A)
-
Are those objective markers?
And is that a golden roof?
-
Those Tabletop World buildings are ace, I've been really wanting to build a town but given that my army is still blu-tacked together, headless and unpainted in boxes I'm not sure they'd have much use for a town right now... nor do I have the space to keep one!
Also liking the high security feel to these digs, are the walls keeping enemies out or trying to keep the occupant in!?
-
Are those objective markers?
And is that a golden roof?
They could be objective markers! I see the heroes battling the spiders and then having to figure out what to do with the eggs.
The roof is copper. What else would adventurers do with all those copper pieces?
-
I'm a fan of your terrain. The spider eggs are clever. Never thought of that! :)
The roof is copper. What else would adventurers do with all those copper pieces?
-Z
-
Here is a classic terrain piece that I finally put some paint on.
-
:icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Really love how you painted that piece, especially the book!
Agrax Earthshade or Seraphim Sepia might add a bit more depth to the candles.
-
That is awesome,Shark.
What is it from?
-
It is from the old HeroQuest board game. But the candles broke off, and so I had to replace them with other candles from some old kit.
-
I finally got around to painting these guys. A sapper crew for my Empire.
And I hope they don't run into this guy while digging. He was painted using mostly Contrast paints.
-
Awesome! That troll looks very rap partha. I thought I had all the trolls in that collection but I certainly don’t have that one
-
Thanks! I don't remember where it came from, but I wanted to build a party of humanoid adventurers: Goblin Rogue, Kobold Sorcerer, Troll Barbarian, etc.
-
Awesome! That troll looks very rap partha. I thought I had all the trolls in that collection but I certainly don’t have that one
Yeah, he looks like a Ral Partha sculpt. Only its club seems a little bit to big? Is it original?
I do really like that color scheme :-) Nice work!
-
The club is from the ogre sprue. It is big, but I think the angle of the picture makes it look even bigger.
-
This thread will be getting some more love in 2021. Last year I painted around 175 models, but almost all of them were Star Wars or star Wars-compatible.
Starting in January, I'll be getting back to my backlog of Warhammer stuff.
-
Here is the first painting project of the year, Myrrmourn Banshees. I love all of the detail on these, especially the bases. Very much in the style of the Garden of Morr terrain piece.
-
Looks nice mate!
Have you thought about getting Dreadfleet by GW. Would have thought it’s right up your alley?
-
I have a copy. yes!
If I ever need to use my Oldhammer Pirates in Age of Sigmar, I'll claim they sailed in via the Galleon's graveyard.
-
A few more things finished:
These Bloodreavers I started to paint a few years ago but never finished. However, I seem to have misplaced the standard bearer at some point...
These Sisters of slaughter are standing in for Wrathmongers. I was getting tired of the same old Khorne look, so went with something different.
Next up are ten Bloodletters, and that will round out Khorne and my goal for this month.
-
I like how you've painted these miniatures, especially the SoS figures. :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Looking great! Looks like chaos will be having a greater impact in this household as well. My son has opted for the StD starter box
-
Suspect StD does not mean what it is commonly meant in the health world. :icon_wink:
-
Suspect StD does not mean what it is commonly meant in the health world. :icon_wink:
😺☝️ I hope not lol
-
:icon_lol: Well that doesn't tell me what StD means in the Warhammer Chaos world.
Then again with the new Slaanesh Chaos creeps coming along, it's possible that there's a similarity. :icon_wink:
-
Slaves to Darkness. I find it a bit slanneshy but it’s good old chaos
-
The bloodletters are coming along!
-
Never had any bloodletters.
Maybe one day I will buy some.
-
They are cool models. And they paint up pretty easily.
-
Well, I found these two guys. They had gone missing, and they turned up in my minis case of all places. I could swear I had looked there...

Anyway, that's all of my Khorne for now. On to Nurgle!
-
Awesome!
Love that champ!
-
Thank you! Next up is Nurgle. Here is a test model to try out the scheme.

Looking good!
Maybe a little bit more slimy?
-
Maybe? I'm considering going glossy...
Meanwhile, here are four chests.

That green on the nurgle looks like a cross between ugly and gruesome ... a good combo. :icon_mrgreen: :eusa_clap:

Thanks! It's the theme color for my Nurgle models. One chest for each of the chaos factions.
I have finished Gutrot Spume and the Blightkings. I'm not 100% happy, but I'll call them done for now.

Sounds like a punk rock band, perhaps singing a song called, "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
-
Hah! Nice. Here is my Darkoath Queen.

Up next are 10 Chaos Warriors and Lord. I finally got ahold of a can of black primer, so we are in business.
-
Those are looking very good indeed! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Isn't that final wizard an old Gameday exclusive?
-
Maybe? But this one is plastic, and came with Shadows over Hammerhal.
-
I was thinking of this one:

Joking aside, I am trying to speed through these guys to get on to other projects...
-
I like that you did these in brown! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Keep em rollin! Love the knights
-
Thank you. Will do. I'm hoping to finish the Chaos Lord yet this weekend. After that, Skaven!
-
Here he is.
