Title: Hobbying in a Storage Unit ...
Post by: GamesPoet on September 04, 2019, 12:57:55 PM
I have a storage unit located inside a mill building a short distance from my place.  Mostly I keep some furniture there for expanding into a better location at some point, although I do have some boxes of stuff that need to be sorted through eventually as well.

The other day I saw a lady with a much larger storage unit working inside it with all her sewing material and associated things, perhaps hobbying, perhaps a place for storing inventory as part of a business, perhaps both.  It dawned on me that wouldn't it be a nice idea to at least temporarily have such a space for hobbying, at least until I can find what I am looking for as living space.

And so ... I'm thinking of this weekend moving all my hobby stuff located at my place out and into a storage unit that can be used for sorting, organizing, maybe even gaming if large enough, until I eventually decide where I'll be living next.  It'll all be more accessible, sorted, perhaps even better used and moved along with progress than it currently is.

I don't know... I have thought if I would ever do that, and I don't think I could. I am too attached to my stuff. Does this unit have AC? My fear is that something would happen to my stuff and I wasn't there. I just think the environment would be a little tougher on boxes and paint and all that as opposed to a closet.

If I can't fit everything in my closet I have too much stuff!

All the units are inside an air conditioned building.  It was originally a textile mill.  There is quite a bit of security as well.

I've been around for a good while in life, probably don't have more hobby things than SteveB did, and certainly not as much as Midask (:engel:), and  so ... all my things couldn't fit in a closet.  Unless maybe it was a walk-in closet. :icon_lol:

These storage units seem to be quite popular in the US. There is a German TV station that shows series like 'Storage Wars' etc., which is my source of information.   :icon_wink:  I would be way too scared that something would go wrong and the contents of my storage unit would get auctioned off to some douchebags without proper warning.  :icon_confused: :icon_lol:

I've seen people run hobbying businesses out of storage units before. I believe its not technically legal, and they often get shut down, but that's usually because they're trying to run a business. A hobbying space I bet would be fine, and if the storage room is pretty decent it could be fun! Not that much different from a garage.

Have no idea what "storage wars" means.  No one's storage unit gets sold off that I'm aware of.  If a monthly storage fee isn't paid, maybe that is a separate issue.

I don't have this storage idea as a plan for long term use, more like temporarily, until I have a better option.  It could be of benefit as a way to unclutter it from it's current space, and sort it into some sort of useful organization of it all as well.  The it is ready for repopulating some other spot, and hopefully having a better separation of it's parts into fantasy, sci-fi, historical, and all the various subsets of the historical stuff.

Storage Wars is a show about a group of people who bid on storage units that renters have stopped paying for and left their stuff behind. So the owners lift the door, then shut it, leaving the bidders to just get a glance on what is inside. They bid accordingly hoping to get something useful or valuable. Completely ridiculous.

Americans have too much crap. So we have to rent storage places to store all of our crap. Storage places can be found all over the US.

Just a word of caution GP.

I have a large shed at the top of the garden which I planned to use for hobby stuff.
Electricity - lighting - heating - lots of shelving.
The idea was that I could go and disappear up there for hours of fun and leave things 'out' - not have to tidy up or put things away.  :biggriin:

The reality is I seem to 'forget' it's there - forget to go up there - then at the end of a day when I have done very little except lounge around, I wistfully think: "Oh I must spend more time in the Shen* on hobby stuff."

And that is a 30 yard walk to get to it.  :closed-eyes:

I have been thinking about doing this but have not for several reasons. One is the Cleveland, Ohio weather. Anything I would leave in there would have to endure temperatures between -10 and 100 F. (Higher, if it's sealed up and baking out in the sun.) From having left various hobby supplies in my car before, I know those temperatures are not kind to paints, glues, etc. as well as resin or even plastic figures. Also, wild pests (especially wasps, ants, and mice) in our neighborhood seem to get into/infest everything. I wonder how others in similar environments deal with these issues. (Or does it not work?)

On a similar note, I shared an art studio in an old factory -- probably similar to your setup, GP. It was an old building partitioned off into studios & work spaces of various sizes. (Artists, band rehearsal spaces, very small scale manufacturing, a few offices.) My friend and I had a 20' x 60' space with a rolling "barn door". It was heated, but no AC (and could get a bit warm in Summer.) He decided to give up his portion and I decided not to seek another studio mate. (At the time I was mostly using it as an office for design work, which I could do at home.) If I ever get back into regular gaming and my living conditions don't change, I would definitely consider looking for a space like that -- especially if the cost could be split between a few people.

I am a bit afraid of putting it all in a storage unit, and then not doing anything with it.  The problem of things being out of sight, is they can become out of mind quickly.  Except currently it is all in sight, unorganized, and nothing is being worked on anyway.

I want to rent the space, and make sure I have plenty of space to lay it all out, and start sorting through it.  It's going to need to be a dedicated undertaking to make it happen.  If I can get it accomplished, I imagine things could be more fun on the other side.

I actually want a spot where it can all be laid out and organized, and then get it back closer to home, and then use it more.  Although need to find a better home, too. The latter is another one of those dedicated undertakings that I have been haphazardly looking for along the way.

I've had my other furniture and boxed up stuff at the current storage location for almost two years.  It is clean, no pests around, and temperature controlled, which are all wonderful things to have.  However, don't want to leave my hobby stuff in such a nice spot for too long, and eventually want to get my hobby things back into my home as quickly as possible.

Just pack the furniture from one of your rooms at home into the storage unit, and make that room a hobby room at home. For example, how much do you really need a bed, for example?

How about this, divide your stuff into three groups:

Tier 1 - The most prized posessions
Tier 2 - Nice to haves
Tier 3 - Taking up space and time from 1 and 2

Get rid of 3, put 2 in storage, and concentrate on 1 at your home.

I'm contemplating my own advice. Maybe my daughter can sleep on a pillow in the dining room, next to the dog. I can claim her room as hobby space.  :engel:

Or just have a 5 bedroom house with an attic and a shed (brick one for gardening stuff and bikes)

I have all my need to be dry stuff I don't really need in the attic and got one of the bedrooms as my hobby room (though I still paint at the dinner table downstairs..)

If there would be any stuff that I can't put away in the house anymore then I probably don't need it anymore.. getting a storage unit for stuff that I won't use at all is just waste of space and money to keep such a storage unit.

:icon_lol:

If you saw my "living" room, that's where half the hobby stuff has been dumped for the last two years since my last move.  For furniture there is ... a desk, chair, book shelves, a filing cabinet or two, a T.V. that hardly ever gets watched.  Oh and then all the boxes of books and hobby stuff that need to be sorted through filling up the rest of the 156 square foot floor space.

Did I mention I have hobby stuff in my dining room?  And of course there is the bedroom too. :icon_rolleyes:

Thankfully none in my kitchen.  Unless ya count the rather large combined space of the kitchen and dining area as one room. :icon_mrgreen:

Seriously, not much hobby stuff in the "dining" room. But the bedroom has more books and hobby stuff, and we'll leave it at that. :icon_lol:

An interesting idea.  Although for the moment my organization is initially going to go something like this ...

Sci-Fi ... definitely want to get my minimal stuff in this category all together in one spot.  This is mostly GW stuff for 40K, and really isn't much, mostly Orks, and then a miscellaneous hodge podge of Space Marines, Tau, and a bunch of figures from the defunct Wargames Factory outfit probably to use for IG or other humans.  Oh and there are the "bugs"!

Fantasy ... will take center stage, so to speak.  It is all mostly Empire, but I am branching out a little bit ... Orcs & Goblins, Elves, Rats (Skaven? They don't exist), Dwarfs, Ogres, WoC, Bretonnians, Westfalia Halfmen ... which leads me to the next category.

Historicals ... oh my.  The classification process for this, eek!  Not sure I want to list each category yet, and not sure I wouldn't forget a few.  This is by far the worst situation.  Way too many projects from Ancients to WW2.  I even have some modern forces for a fantasy 3rd World Imagi-Nations project.  It is all mixed up in various places and in much need of getting a grip on all of it.

Scenery ... not a ton of this, yet.  However, there are three 4x2 game boards, and a lot of projects started, plus more waiting for me to get my hands on them.  A couple of years back I started creating sloping hillsides for the Napoleonic era in Spain (maybe even Spanish Civil War, or places in Africa for Colonial era, or that 3rd World Imagi-Nations project I mentioned above), something I see as being a long term effort, and I mention it because these are big scenery structures that need a home.  I have a whole set of Mediterranean buildings I got from a recent kickstarter that can be used for fantasy and historicals.  The list goes on and on, and imagine this will end up taking more space than the miniatures.

Been house shopping recently, maybe at some point.  In the meantime, no more one bedroom places for me, and looking for a two or three bedroom spot currently.  The storage idea is only intended to be "temporary".

And by the way, Midaski probably tells his wife that the shed is for his garden tools and bike too.  As long as your lady doesn't read this site, you can keep us apprised of how well the air-conditioning unit that sticks out the back of your shed is doing, and all those extra figures you've got hiding in there as well. If I need to delete this part of my post, let me know, so she doesn't see it. :icon_wink:

No worries there.. she enters the shed pretty often and there are actually bikes in there.. You do know we are dutch right? Like it's almost mandatory to have a bike here at least 1 per person, so 5 bikes in there... Where would I need to put them otherwise? :)

Besides it's just a one layer brick shed.. no insulation what so ever.. so it's damp and cold in there, as it is now it wouldn't be a very good location for me to put hobby stuff in there.

Don't tell Zak 5 bikes have taken over you're miniature shed.  He'll claim it's an example of paranormal activity, for sure.  Fortunately he mostly hangs out over on the Back Table, and won't see this.

Well ... it is official ... started renting a 12' wide x 17' deep storage unit.  It even has a window at the opposite end of the door with some decent light coming in for sorting, organizing, and maybe even gaming, if I get a table set up near the window.  It is located on the second floor, just around a couple corners and all the way down a hallway that dead ends just off the main circle of hallways.

Going to start taking photos as things move along, although need to learn how to upload photos from my phone to this site, too.

Two car loads taken to the storage unit.  It was quite the afternoon project, and probably two more car loads of stuff at least.  It has already been an eye opening experience.

The first car load had me thinking, "This is only one car load, uh boy."  When I got the second car load to the unit, sitting on the loading cart, and began emptying it onto the storage unit, my sense was, "Look how much freaking stuff I have, and so far it's only maybe half of what I got."

I have begun sorting into five piles ... Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Historicals, Terrain, and ... a catagory I had forgotten about earlier ... Books+Games+Magazines+MiniatureRules.  Much more to do.

Ah yes - the books.
So many - I buy rulebooks just to read and look at the pretty pictures. I will never get to play the rules set, indeed I have sets on version 3 where I have never played version 1 or 2.

It bothers me that I haven't been able to play so many of the rules I have.  Evidently I'm not the only one that runs into this, although I don't collect rule sets.  I buy them because I am interested in them, yet don't get around to even painting the miniatures to play the miniature games.

Update ... I packed my car last night with a 3rd load to go to the storage unit.  My three 4'x2' game boards took up a lot of space in the vehicle just because they are bulky. It was another reminder of how silly this hobby is sometimes because I have plans for more game boards and still haven't gotten around to doing them yet either ... lol.  And the space these things takes up in a car guarantees there will be at least 5 loads total.

And the magazines! Sheesh.  I only have one subscription, but I pick up others from time to time at stores, conventions, flea markets at conventions.  These things often have cool articles on history, scenarios, terrain making, painting, etc.  Got get these organized too, and I dream of setting up a catalogue on what is in the magazines I have.  Not sure it'll ever happen, but if I can find a way to keep this idea simple and informative, might still give it a go.

However, for the moment, got to get back to step one on this project and see how all this organizing stuff develops ...

12’ x 17’ is an amazing space. You could have a work table, 3 6x4 tables, 1 sci fi, 1 fantasy and 1 historical. Shelves for a library of sorts and also for terrain. Plus shelves for the armies and boxes of stuff. That’s an amazing space. 😸
Title: Re: Hobbying in a Storage Unit ...

I was curious, and measured the space.  Wanted to know what I really had so I could make some plans for using it effectively, especially for an idea for a shelving unit or two that I am likely going to implement.  Interestingly it was actually 10' x 15', but I was tired and might measure it again to confirm that I didn't get it wrong.

@ Artoban ...  I like your idea!  Probably won't get a work table and 3 other tables, but who knows how this might develop.  Work table is a must for terrain projects at a minimum, and maybe laying out specific painting projects.  I'm probably going to have a painting location at my place with most current painting being done at home where food, music, t.v., and bathroom is available.

Planning to move some existing furniture from my older and smaller storage unit into this one for use there.  I've got a table for working and a table for gaming, a huge hutch that I could use for storage of completed figures.  Plan to put in some shelving units for ongoing, unstarted, and unfinished projects, both figures and terrain.

I also have my grandmother's sewing machine and table for projects like Padre's costumes, but this idea is much more long term and further down the road, me needing some lessons, probably initially from my mother.  She's the one that said make sure I do this before she can't.

Anyway, took a fourth car load over to the storage unit today.  Probably at least a fifth still to go.

You are definitely correct. Even with the first measurements I was wrong. Could handle a workbench and 2 tables but your 10 x 15  could  only handle a work area and 1 table plus shelves, hutches. Still will be an awesome comfortable room. I tried to pack too much in my basement room and regretted the close confines. I am taking measurements of my area and will build to suit comfortably. I’m planning on shelving in the form of 15” deep x 8’ by at least 4 shelve high. Those brackets that screw on the wall with the metal shelf supports that clip in. Should provide about 32 lineal ft of storage. Going to use aspenite 1/2 “ painted with melamine paint for shelves, workbench and 2 tables + experimental dice boards. 4 sheets will do the job at about $10 a sheet plus paint. Budget, budget, budget as usual 😸

I believe sewing is one of the most important, basic skills anyone can know. I would love to learn the finer points of sewing ( I don't, currently). I hope you take advantage of those lessons!

I here ya 023.  And when my mother said what she said I did a double take.  She is getting up there in age, and learning what she knows, it is like any other parental skill, if they have 'em, it is probably worth learning from them.

It is amazing how much our view point changes as we get older.  Had someone said I would be interested in sewing, I probably wouldn't have contemplated it being yes.  But with the inheriting of my grandmothers items, no one else wanted them, and I saw it as an opportunity to widen my skills, maybe even dabble in making fashionable items for a lady friend and myself, particularly costumes for some of the historical interests I have.  (The lady friend is gone, although a new one seems to be on the way, and she is into fashion, so we'll see.)

My grandmother's dining room hutch that no one wanted is going to be used for storage of something, I'm thinking perhaps terrain, although not sure yet.  I also inherited a tall curio cabinet with glass on all sides that I can see into and will save for finished stuff.  Not much of that yet ... lol.  I have a antique vintage Victorian era sofa which will take up some space for sitting, might help the place look a little classy.  I have a table that I'm going to turn into a gaming spot.  I also have my grandmother's sewing machine table and her work table, and a small round office meeting style table, too.

I need to invest in some sort of shelving, and soon.  This will be for storing all the unstarted and unfinished miniatures.

By the way going to scale back the old storage unit into a smaller space which means I will have hardly had the old and new unit for at most a few weeks.  The smaller unit will only have boxes of unrelated to hobby stuff, and eventually going to go through that as well to eliminate the need for the smaller unit.  Then it is on to organizing the large hobby space unit, after I get done moving the non-hobby stuff from the old unit to a new one.

Update time ...

4th weekend ... transfered old storage unit into a smaller new storage unit for less money. Nothing new on the hobby storage unit.
5th weekend ... moved some furniture into the smaller unit to make space for hobbying in the big unit.
6th weekend ... bought two 3' x 18" shelving units (they didn't have more yet), constructed them, started putting sci-fi and fantasy on to one, sci fi at the top on two shelves (it's in space!), fantasy on the bottom three shelves, and need to inventory next.

Excellent GP. Progress is good

I'm looking forward to creating my hobby inventory.  It'll be quite the chore, and could take a while, yet want to be able to know quickly what I have and what I don't to make good choices. If possible ... lol.

Noticed I got 2 and a half boxes of greatswords, 1 and a half of pistoliers/outriders (need to buy at least a couple more kits of these before they disappear),  2 and a half boxes of huntsmen, and probably 2 boxes, maybe more of militia (need to open up the two already started boxes and see what more I might have.  Got a couple boxes of spearmen with handgunners, 6th edition Empire battalion box, 1 knights box, 1 infantry/detachment box, one set of 7th edition infantry, 6th edition infantry, 6th edition crossbows, maybe a few other items ... general box, volley gun, wizard weapon machine, 7/8th edition war altar, probably forgetting something not having started the real inventory yet.  And that's just Empire, not that I have the same quantity of other factions, definitely not.

Yes, I can see how this can be quite the project.  Just sorting through the five categories to store things with more organization than previous is going to be an effort.  The category of fantasy and sci-fi alone, thankfully isn't as much, nor as varied, as my historical collection, and so I'm starting with that one first.  Once I get to the historical figures, going to try to inventory it by era and faction, but we'll see ... lol.  Terrain won't be as much of an issue.

Purchased a 3rd shelf unit, and got it built along side the first two.

There are fantasy and sc-fi boxes on one from last week's effort.  The next two are going to be for the following historical catagories ...

- - - On one unit there will be Ancients, Dark Ages, Middle Ages, Renaissance, 18th Century.

- - - On the other there will be Napoleonic, Rest of 19th Century, Early 20th Century, WW2, Latter 20th Century.

Going to begin sorting to the historical shelves next, and as more fantasy and sci-fi show up, those will go to the front of their shelf on the floor, for future sorting on to their shelf unit.

Oh my ... the figures I am finding as I sort ...

The Westfalia Halfmen.

28 pairs of the older plastic Bret archers.

Some gorgeous older 25mm medieval figures.

One small box of Ral Partha Late Medieval artillery.

The North Star 1672 artillery and cavalry.

Longstreet Rules and cards by Sam Mustafa.

The MoFo Moderns for use with an Imagi-nations project.

- - -

Much more sorting to do, but alas,  it is time to go home, make dinner, go dancing. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

So spent a second afternoon sorting through the historicals.  Just getting through that wasn't easy.  At one point a took a break for a donut and gatorade, and just looking at the sci-fi fantasy shelf alone wasn't doing positive things for me to want to inventory it.  I ended up getting through most of the historical figures, and there's been some good sorting by era and faction, but inventorying it, not sure that'll happen soon if ever.  There's a table to construct, and other shelf to set up for terrain, determining where I'm going to put hobby supplies.  And oh my, the number of hobby projects, sheesh it's frankly a bit crazy.

It is nice to get all this stuff in one spot, and be able to set it up for future use, yet one really sees the completely nutty side of this hobby when it is sitting all in one room like this.  I suppose there could be worse things to spend time, effort and money on, but it really is a bit wacky in a way.  At this point, it really feels like I have enough to keep myself busy for a long time, and maybe the rest of my life, and it has even begun to have me thinking about what I might not really want to do, and thus sell some of it, which is the first time I've sensed such an idea.

I understand your look at the hobby side like you have been. It may seem crazy but I was listening to a therapist the other day talking about his addiction to owning cd’s. His conclusion was that there are harmful addictions and passive ones. Are you causing anyone undo hardship because of your collection. Going into uncontrollable financial issues because of it?  Causing health issues to yourself or family?
If none of the above apply and it brings pleasure of sorts, then there is no reason for concern. Of course I’m no professional, am not saying you are addicted, and this fully justifies my outlook (😺), so continue till you don’t feel like it anymore!

Some value here!  Harm is probably another one of those relative things.  There are times when I've spent more than wise because some figures looked lovely, and I had ideas for wonderful gaming.  I get inspired by articles as well, and then when seeing figures that match what I'd love to be doing, then I buy them.

Nope.  The only thing I can think of is if not paying attention to relationships, yet a balanced life, although not easy to achieve, is possible.

Quote
Going into uncontrollable financial issues because of it?
Thankfully not, although some of the spending at times has been more than wise.  I'm much better about it these days, and my income has increased, and the latter makes both less of an issue.

Causing health issues to yourself or family?
Definitely not.

Not sure I'm addicted to much.  There are probably those who'd say I'm in denial regarding these miniatures, but it is more the quantity of unfinished projects that I'm most concerned about, and want to get to them all.  Or else decide which ones to let go of accordingly.  Can't recall ever thinking about the latter before this past weekend, although I'm thinking this is probably healthy to at least be entertaining the idea.  But we'll see.

My back hurts from sitting too long this evening trying to write the next installment of my campaign account. So, my hobby does cause me pain.

No back problems from this yet.  My back problems seem to stem more from aging, a compression of the back over time as I shrink in height.

8th weekend in a row ... got the 4th and final shelving unit up.

Discovered I might have underestimated the amount of space needed for the terrain ... lol.

I now have four 3' long by 18" inches deep shelving units with five shelves each, the shelf units are 6' high.  On the far left I have about 2' space at the end of the row of shelves where I've put a bunch of unused foam blocks and pieces that are also next to the shelf unit with the terrain.  Then followed by two shelving units of historicals, and then one of fantasy & sci fi.  The remaining space next to the last shelving unit currently has empty boxes, that will eventually be stored under the gaming table, and two small drawer units stacked on top of each other, for I'm not sure what yet, and the 5 foot tall curio cabinet for some finished figures.  Thus most of the metal wall is blocked and it feels less like a storage unit as a result, and more like a cellar.

I also placed my Victorian era sofa at the far end of the room from the door, and under the window.  This leaves a lot of space for a gaming table.  The initial table will be 5' x 6', and I'll place a work bench at one end that could make the table 7' 6" long.  Won't probably take much to turn this into a 5' x 10' table area for larger gaming if desired.
Title: Re: Hobbying in a Storage Unit ...
Post by: GamesPoet on October 28, 2019, 10:18:15 AM
Also ...

While the curio cabinet is on one side of the door, my grandmothers solid wooden hutch is on the other, which not sure how I'm going to use that yet, except it does have the top half with see through doors so maybe things I want to see, like more miniatures.  Got an old iron, low, shelving unit with three shelves that I'm going to use for books, rules, magazines and such and place it either near the hutch, or all the way down the wall near the sofa.  My three home made 2' x 4' game boards are being stored upright next to the sofa with room for 2 or 3 more, if and when I make what is planned.  Most of the brick wall that has been there since the mill building was built in the 1800s will be seen, and it gives good flavor to the atmosphere.

If there is any way to take a picture of this when your done please do. It sounds awesome. That brick wall clinched the deal for me. This will truly be an enviable space. If you belong to lead adventure , the is a thread for hobby rooms and workplaces and that would be an ideal showplace for this as well.

Also, the iron shelf unit. If that could be arms length from the couch without being to obstructive, that would be a great place to reach for, lie back and read.

I've taken some pictures early on when this was just starting.  Was going to take pictures yesterday, but it was the end of the day and would need to have more light in the space.  At some point I'll take some more pictures, and when I figure out what I am going to do for posting them, then I'll get some up.

On the low iron shelf unit, I was considering the same thing.  When I stopped last night, there was still a pile of boxes with terrain and stuff in front of the sofa, the work bench was up against the iron shelf unit, and half of my 5'x6' table was lying around in parts ready for construction.  There was also a slew of miniatures I'd been slowly laying out on the floor as I uncovered more from various spots and needing to figure out how to include them on the shelves for easy access, probably get more plastic bins.

It makes for an interesting picture at this point, so maybe there will be enough light next weekend to take a few more.  Eventually there will be an "after" its all done photo too.

Well only half an hour in the storage unit today.  Brought in 4 plastic bins for organizing.  Found out the electric outlet in the hall isn't working, which is big bummer.  Couldn't get enough light into the storage unit for constructing the table parts, and couldn't charge one of the two batteries for my drill and screwing tool. Moved the boxes from the center of the room to construct the table, but my overall effort seemed stymied, and I lost a bit of motivation this time.  9 weeks in a row, but this time just barely.

I checked another plug down the hall, and it didn't work either.  Looks like  they have these turned off on purpose, and not available to the public.  Charging the drill batteries at home.  Not sure what I'm going to do about power, if anything.  Might have to play games only during the day when there is light available from the window.

Well ... as it turns out, the charger isn't working.  Which now I'm not sure if the outlets work in the storage area or not.  Will have to check it out.

In the meantime, brought the second half of the 5x6 table into the storage unit this past weekend, some more figures found at my place when cleaning things out (including some older yummy GW Empire figures, some magazines, and some storage items for organizing the magazines.

That makes 10 weekends in a row doing something related to this hobby storage unit. :::cheers:::

Although this upcoming weekend probably not.  Expecting to travel to Fall-In! 2019 down in Valley Forge PA for some hobby gaming and maybe a wee bit of buying as well.  Haven't been to one of these in the PA area since Cold Wars 2016, almost 4 years, and so it is about time!  :icon_cool:

Well didn't get into the storage unit this past weekend, and so the streak ends at 10 weekends in a row.  Maybe I'll start up a new streak, but with the holidays coming, that could get tricky currently.

My trip to Fall-In! 2019 went ok.  I'll save my gaming for another thread, but had fun with them.  Did some shopping at the vendor area and in the hobby style flea market, but didn't buy much.  Picked up a foreign movie called "Il Mestiere Delle Armi", about the fighting between the landsknechts under Von Frundsberg and the Papal army led by Giovanni Medici.  Bought a copy of the Impetus Supplement 3, a building and set of walls by Miniature Building Authority, and a box of Perry Confederates, all from the Vendor Hall.  Flea market saw me getting two old issues of Wargamers Digest, a halfling, and a bunch of 40mm AWI figures with inf at a buck a piece and cavalry at 2 bucks each (a real steal for my collection).

10 weeks was a pretty good run all the same. Definitely want to hear about your gaming and for some reason I want to build a lot of walls and there are some plastic moulds for rock cuts in the local train store. Would like to try them with quickset drywall compound and see what happens. Also Padre’s use of aquarium stone and pvc has me captivated for walls. Lots and lots of walls.

Need to solve building the tables next.  Got to have space to work on, as well as eventually do some gaming.  I'm eyeing my Forgotten Worlds figures, some Wars of the Roses figures, and maybe even some fantasy figures.  So many projects, and even if I just list them from a big picture perspective, then I can start prioritizing them.  Scenery projects are a plenty as well, which I need to start doing some of those for expanding my gaming options.

By the way, noticed I'm missing some figures.  Haven't located my 40K Orks yet, and that is a bit disconcerting.  So I've got more things to locate beyond what might still be in a box or two for sorting at the storage unit, which I believe is mostly terrain and supplies.

My sense is I need to still put a focus on getting things to happen at the storage unit, even if only a couple hours per week.  It is a little bit at a time, but this has been adding up, and will continue to do so moving forward if I keep a focus on it.  The goal is to get things in a spot where I can more effectively participate with the hobby.

Agree. Even a little time devoted gets the dopamine stirring. Knowing that maybe there isn’t time to fully commit a day or two but still taking the time to look and regroup your thoughts can be just as satisfying I think.

When I was younger, I would have gone in for a day or two or three or more and got it all done.  Or delayed until I could do that.  There just isn't time for the former, too many other things in life that also need getting done in parallel, and delaying gets little if anything accomplished which has gotten me to where I was at before this project started.  A little bit at a time, a couple hours a week, and progress is happening.

Today is moving most furniture day!  Going to the storage unit to move the Victorian sofa and the gaming tables.  Then off to the old place to move all the stuff from there as well.  Can't wait to be in the new place and have it organized.  Expect to be in by end of next weekend, but then the organizing begins, and not sure how long that'll take, probably an ongoing process.

Go to find me a fold up table for the hobby room, at least 4'x6', but would love 5'x8'.  ONe of those items that can be stored up against a wall, and rolled out, table top lowered, for game play on top of it.  Anyone got any ideas :icon_question:

Is it possible to make a fold down table, like a Murphy bed. I had thought about this on a few occasions. Even with the idea of having a 6x4 print of  “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt - one of my favourite paintings - to look like a painting when not in use.  A pretty elaborate plan than should probably remain an idea.

I live by myself, and have enough food for 3 or 4 weeks, probably longer.  And plenty of activities, including work, and unpacking from the moving, but yes, practicing my dance, and creating figures, scenery, painting, and reading and 'riting (but not 'rithmetic ... lol), etc.

I have family that is already self isolating themselves and their families, but we stay in touch via phone and texting.  And I have friends in the church community, dance community, and miniatures hobby community to stay in touch with along the way.  So hopefully I'll be ok.

My colleague that I rent office space with has two admins that help us, and there is no way to know who they're husband's are coming in to contact with, and thus infect their concerned wives, and then infect my colleague and I.  So ... I'm going to be conducting my business from home.

This public health issue is actually strengthening my business relationships with my clients.  The interactions I've been having with them over the phone now instead of in person have contained powerful moments of conversation and strengthening their lives and decision making ability despite their anxiety, fears sadness, and likely suffering at some point along the way.

This is going to be quite a change for me.  I'm more extroverted than my younger years, I'm involved in a lot of activities, and of course no more dating isn't going to be fun, although in a way I am relating to one woman who I've been staying in touch with every day as she deals with running her business via mail, and struggling with her octogenarian parents in this tough time.

But hey, this is what is happening in the current moments, and no sense in resisting it.  Better to stay aware, make healthy choices as best as possible, and stay connected and supported through the interactions possible via phone, text, internet.

I'm glad this site exists, can't thank Grutch and the admins enough for keeping it going, nor the participants who come here to share their lives and loves and disappointments and information and pictures and stories and friendship.

Thank you. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

Second set of shelves down and into new place.  Also boxed up all Naps, 19th century, Early 20th century, WW2, and Modern figures.  Plus all generic Sci-fi, 40K, WFB figures have also been boxed.

I have a bunch of magazines, books, and terrain making material that needs to be cleared out of the hobby unit.  Then it gets closed.

Need to put up the shelves here in my storage room that I have at my place, and then start getting the figures on to them next.  Also need to put up the work tables/game table as a temporary way to get moving on with the hobby.

Till the 28th.  Depending on work load, might finish today, but regardless, soon.  The organization at home will take longer.

Me too brother, me too...

Just read through this thread and saw that you were at Fall iN! I was too! Played in a couple Wings of Glory games, a ACW game, WW1 naval combat and Muskets and Tomahawks. My daughter and my dad accompanied me. First time to a con and gaming for my dad. My daughter has gone to smaller locals with me before (in is a local legend among the Triumph! crew due to a fantastic win in a Battle of Hastings game).

I had a bit of a haul of stuff, love the vendor hall and spend too much every year.

Yep, I've been to Historicon and Fall-In!, both on and off over time, although rarely go to Cold Wars because it so often has not been good timing for so many reasons.  Maybe we'll bump into each other at one of these some day.  However, they just snuck this year's Cold Wars in under all these epidemic shutdowns, Historicon seems to be questionable, and who knows about Fall-In! this year, just too far off and too much current uncertainty.

In the meantime, I have now dug out my 20 Border Reivers in 28mm, washed them off, and going to clean flash and mold lines next.  Plus I'm spray priming my 8mm Perry Napoleonics that I received as a gift from another gamer friend for painting soon.  I've never even painted 15mm, so these 8mm dudes ought to be interesting.

Is the end in site? Reading over your collection, I am amazed at how much stuff we collect over time. I’m also in the process of bringing back the collection from my workshop to home. I keep thinking, I’ll dump these armies as I don’t use them anymore (here’s looking at you 40k) but a primal resistance builds up and I turn to other thoughts. I still have 3 boxes of books to deal with that survived the first purge. I swear only 1 box will return.
I have 3 ikea cabinets that are at the shop as well. 1 is going into the new ‘studio’ for art supplies. My office was relocated and my wife turned the room into a studio for her daughters art working. Didn’t tell her or push her to use the space and she just moved in and started using everything. Glorious.
The 2nd cabinet will go downstairs and that will take only the books it can hold. The rest go ....somewhere.

Hobbies like this one and many others appeal to the brain and generate positive chemicals, and so we get addicted to that.  I probably have way too many miniatures, and still buy.  It appeals to my fantasy of various interests in eras, I love military history, it has shaped the world, and imagining myself as part of those eras is a bit crazy, yet fun. And so I buy.  And it is tough to let go.  But as I age, I begin to see where I need to let go, and eventually will.  I'm seeing my father do it with his things as he approaches his death.

I have lots of books as well, and have begun the process of deciding which ones I will keep, sell, or toss.  Miniatures ... I mostly keep, might give some away to those nephews who exhibit enough interest to warrant giving them some, but time will tell.  After that I may begin selling, yet will see.  Never thought I would, and seen folks sell, and then regret it, so I don't sell miniatures currently.  Perhaps never.

Hope I can find a lady that respect my space and property.
