Well, I'm a big believer in "if it ain't human it doesn't need to be breathing" but those merc orcs are amazing! I especially like the greatsword one, awesome pose.

All your stuff is epic work, bravo! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

Thanks everyone.

I swore I was going to finish the black knights before moving on to other things. But then a few Westfalia samples appeared in the mail and they naturally jumped to the front of the line! At least they're only a small distraction. ;) I haven't decided what livery colors to use yet.

My 5 Westfalia halflings are staring me in the face each day saying "paint me, paint me".

I haven't decided livery colors yet either.  I dream of having figures for Averland and Stirland on my table, with Haflings engaged in a great civil war as well, and have contemplated having a mix of black, yellow, and green, so they can fight for either side, and maybe even get away with switching sides if need be.  Yet then I keep thinking that I'll use a different color or colors instead.

I like the primer color used on your haflings, and wondering what it is?

I've been using grey Krylon primer followed by a very thin coat or wash of black paint.

I went with purple & grey for something different and striking. I still need to decide on a symbol/blazon/device/badge/whatever-you-call-it for the standard and possibly on other figures in the future.

My fondness for this range of figures just keeps growing. They look nice in photos online, but they are even better in person. The proportions, the crispness & detail, the poses, the concepts -- all awesome.

On the one hand, I'm looking forward to the Kickstarter, but on the other I've got to come up with some money to pledge towards it. I think I'm going be digging through my existing collection to sell off some stuff to fund a shedload of halflings.

While waiting for putty to cure on another project, I cleaned up some recently stripped Oldhammer figures, and took the plunge and assembled the Lord of the Feast. I ended up covering the awful arm joint with a band of putty.  That should help reinforce it too, since I didn't pin it.

My thought is that the Lord of the Feast will join the Life & Death elementals in their old rolls in Warhammer, as "daemons," or lesser avatars of various gods.

Well... since they're Halflings, what about... a half-meter stick?  :)  You know, since they're Half-men and stuff they probably want to go that extra half-mile before half-time.  Maybe they'll even get half-back, which is twice a quarter!   They do look kinda wealthy, so I bet they see the glass as half-full... and not half-empty.  I bet they'd be pretty good at protecting and policing Half-way houses.  They should do things half-way instead of  half-a...

Um... yeah.  Me and my dumb sense of humor. I'll stop that joke now.

Anyway, with the quartered purple-and-white, what about some sort of 5-point star or something... like a Marshall's badge or Wild West Sherrif's badge or so?  Or... since purple-and-white are a bit more expensive, in terms of inks and whatnot, what about a Pinkerton Private Security badge?  They do look like professional private police.  ))

I have been experimenting with some road terrain that I've had in my head for a while, but was finally inspired to start after reading an entry on another blog. I'm not going to copy all of the details here (feeling lazy) but you can read about it here:

I like the idea of having raised roads in the area that you've picked west and northwest of Marienburg.  The picture of the cork tile as road, it is difficult to see the effect after the painting, yet not sure hwo that could be improved, or whether or not it is just the photo.  Some sort of slope from the regular ground up to the road might be good as well?  Not that it couldbn't work as is, yet it seems to look too square from the ground level to the top of the road, although if it elf constructed, suppose one could explain it that way.

By the way, the idea that the area for the campaign is where it's been located, the more Bret style of the Westfalia halflings could also work into the story.  Maybe they are a hearty group that resides on the sides of the moutainous area at the very northerly tip that overlooks the Marches of Couronne, and has that small valley between them and the rest of the mountains to the south.  Perhaps they make lot's of cheese and luncheon style meats from the goats that they herd on the sides of the mountains, and sometimes use as mounts for their warriors or pull their war wagons, both that have been known to escort their caravans of trade goods, along the raised roads of the area.  I'm also imagining that they have lot's of berry patches that they farm, mostly used for jams and jellies, and perhaps the purple color of their clothing (and I imagine dark blues and deep reds as well), which naturally helps hide the stains from such sugary deserts that feature the sweet fruit preserves that they enjoy as much as they export, along with their cheeses and sliced meats.

It does look perhaps a little concretish, but I think you'd get used to it. I do agree that some sort of bank, slope or just kerb would help massively (or combination of those). I think it's the fact that it just rises perfectly vertically from the grass that makes it look so modern. If the cork is fairly stiff and the edging material reasonably strong and stuck to it well I don't think you need additional backing material at all, or maybe just card.

Oh, how about using some sort of timber beading as edging? Quarter round for banks, or something angle cut, or ? It's usually pretty cheap, something like a pound a meter over here. Would be tough as anything (but hard to do curves maybe!)

Do love those early slotta Wights  :eusa_clap:

I'm mulling over plans for them, and yes, most likely in/from Bretonnia. I want to incorporate more Bretonnian influence in the area than there usually seems to be. As Marienburg plays the two larger neighbors (Empire & Bretonnia) against each other, I would like to balance it out a bit.

The cork is a little flexible. That's actually workin out to be a good thing. They have warped a bit from the moisture and/or shrinkage of the paint on the top side, but because they are flexible, they are flattening out under their own weight. I suspect I could even place them across other thin terrain pieces (rivers?) and they would still lay nicely.

I had thought about the quarter round wood trim too. Might not even need to attach them to the roads, just place them next to the roads. I'm not sure I can find small enough (radius) trim, though. Also, I think they are much more likely to warp. My other thought is to glue the cork to some thin card, about 1/2" wider on each side, then build up that area with lightweight wall plaster and finish it similar to the table finish.

I made some more simple road sections to see how it looked in place. The photos are large and clickable, so I will just link to it here...

After seeing the pictures on your log, it seems like the road is working out ok.  I like the look of the boggy/marshy terrain, yet might need at least a little bit more of that along the way.  It's greta to see your project moving along like it is, congrats! :::cheers:::

Yes, I think you'd need to glue the wooden trim in place to make sure it stayed straight. And I'd avoid combining card and a water-based plaster, though it's by far the cheapest option. I'd be using my favourite plasticene-milliput-greenstuff mix, though I suspect that would still cost more than the cork and card put together.

Have to agree with GP that the whole thing already looks splendid. Call it procrastination, careful planning or lack of free time, the effect is that each addition enhances the last nicely. I think the number of gamers who make proper game boards is far less than the number who bother to paint their armies, so you should be proud of doing both and doing both so well.  :::cheers:::

I've left the simple cork roads sitting on the table for a bit now, and I think I'm getting used to them. I think I will just leave them as they are for now, make a few more, and keep going with other things. I can always add more detail to them later.

So, in terms of moving on to other things, the road looked like it needed more bogs around it. At some point I hope to work out a way to tie all of the little bogs together a bit.

I continue to procrastinate in regard to those Black Knights. I've made a rule for myself that I will not paint any more figures until they are done. That is why I now have a few road sections and more bogs (not painting figures!), and a few more miniatures prepped (not painted!) Joining the Life & Death Elementals is the Plague Elemental. It's the weak link in the otherwise outstanding Citadel Elemental series, in my opinion, but I'll see if I can do a better job painting it this time around. I just finished stripping the really old paint off of him. I finally managed to strip all the old paint off the Ral Partha Jabberwock as well.

You mentioned "tying the bogs together" and not sure if you meant the 'look' or actually getting them touching.

If it is the latter, and I think it's a good idea anyway, have you considered changing the base shapes to a "kidney" rather than circular or oval?
Like these 4Ground wood base shapes

These shapes can stand alone or push together for larger pieces - the concept is great for woods but would work well on all sorts of natural terrain.

The plywood circles & ovals were pre-cut, inexpensive, and readily available at the local craft store. Quick and cheap, just like... well, you know.

I'm on the hunt for some new terrain basing material, so I may be able to make some irregular shapes in the future.

Maybe...

Ideally, I want something that doesn't require power tools (scroll saw, etc.) and doesn't make a mess (sawdust) as I am working in the carpeted attic, right above the bedrooms, late at night after my family is asleep.

Well it seems like you have a decent number of the boggy/marshy terrain pieces to start, and I'll keep an eye out for ideas of inexpensive stuff.

I made actual progress on the black knights. I didn't have a lot of time to work on them, but I am celebrating the little victories.

I know what I want to do wih the rest of the cork, but similarly limited in time. I did cut & paint a couple of angled segments, and two ruined segments.

Similarly as to your progress on the black knights, there are days during my current painting effort that I just paint even a little bit to keep my streak alive, and a little bit is better than none at all.

I like the water in the middle of the road in need of repair.  And that small terrain piece of two lower portions of pillars looks good, too.

I finally finished the Black Knights, and have the too-contrasty out photo to prove it.

Do we get names anymore? Do we know who sculpted/designed these at GW? Whoever it is did a great job. My painting is just OK, but the figures are so nice they elevate a mediocre paintjob and look great on the table.

I recently (and unexpectedly) won a lowball bid on some of the really old plastic skeletons. They were already assembled, though they required some minor repairs & repositioning. Painting was quick & simple, and I worked on them as I finished the knights. So now I have some lighter cavalry as well as the heavies.

I have also re-based a giant hawk/eagle that was on loan to a friend while I repaired his (newer & bigger) eagle. I believe this is an old Grenadier model, and was painted ages ago.

Now that the Black Knight monkey is off my back, I can think about what to do next. I may paint a few of the individual figures I've prepped recently. Maybe I can think about the next unit (or large critter!) to paint while I do that.

Maybe even something from the Empire Marienburg? I've been thinking about taking a break from the unliving and painting something with a bit of color for a bit.
