Title: Ursa Doom paints stuff or something, possibly Stormcast Eternals
Post by: Ursa Doom on May 14, 2016, 04:25:19 PM
I figured that I would upload some of my painted stuff here.

These are not Empire minis, but they are Mantic fantasy minis and props from their boardgame Dungeon Saga. Since they are made out of boardgame plastic (probably PVC) the details are not too great, but I like their composition and it's fun to paint something very basic for a change. I think I will use some of these in Frostgrave.

I'm not a fan of Mantic's models, but these undead look ok.

Your painting is great, I really like how you have done the dungeon props  :::cheers:::

Thanks, man. I funded the kickstarter with them because I wanted a bunch of generic fantasy minis that didn't require gluing. They are pretty rough, but I try to bring out the best from them. I had to paint all the details on the book spines on my own.

Looking good! I backed the KS for Dungeon Saga too, more for the game in my case but it's nice to see the minis paint up okay if I ever fancy it.

Post by: Ursa Doom on July 01, 2016, 03:38:13 PM
Here are 2 WIP Frostgrave warbands inspired from Mordheim. They are made with the Frostgrave plastic kits avaliable, Perry Footknights, bits and a lot of greenstuff.

Really nice work. I like the furniture and bookshelf especially. Would love to have a library/study that had that look at home :)
The painted figures look very cool - first 3 from the left especially.
You make the green stuff look easy. I don't have a lot of skill in the freehand sculpting.

Thanks. A lot of the greenstuff detailes are actually made using a reusable press mold material called Magic Mold.

Current WIP painting. Lighting is daylight, so the paintjob looks a bit worse than it is. I will take better pictures when I get home.

So I decided to paint the free Slaughterpriest that came with the White Dwarf. I'm somewhat pleased with how it came out. I wanted the colours to look as grounded as possible and I also didn't like how the sword looked in metal, so I decided to have it look like it was carved out of bone.

I also need to build a proper light box.

I have been painting miniatures from the Conan boardgame by Monolith. I rather liked painting the Bone Golem a lot. It has a silly pose, but I grew fond of it rather fast.

I don't like the bone golem as a sculpt much. Well, i can appreciate what they did, and i think you did a great job painting it, picking out all the detail and everything, and i think the knees are clever, but i don't like the model that much. Whereas the swamp monster looks challenging to paint too, but i also think the model looks good to start. I think Ursa also was able to capture the sliminess well, and also pull a lot of detail out of the smoother surfaces.

Here's another Conan mini. I had a lot of fun painting it and I'm pleased with how the hair turned out. I rather like that the demons in this boardgame doesn't look too alien and outlandish. It's kinda refreshing just having the old school look. I also adore how the Forest Devil looks like it's human in origin just like it was in Beyond the Black River by Robert E. Howard.

Thanks, Artobans. :smile2: I do like making them look as spooky as I can in a down to earth way.

Yeah, the pose of the Bone Golem is pretty silly, but I also get that it is that way because it's easier to manufacture. I still grew fond of it, though. As for the Swamp Devil, it was slightly challenging because I wanted the details to stand out without losing the general green tint.

Thanks, Artobans. :biggriin:

The pose is pretty unique for a miniature. In the story he collected heads. Since he doesn't have a blade I decided that he would probably rip their heads of with his bare hands. So I painted his hands all messy to represent this.

Thanks guys. I have managed to stay productive during the month despite being busy and tired. I have gotten around to paint a couple of more Conan standout minis, a couple of Conan skull pyramids and a group of Warhammer Spirit hosts.

I should look into getting a better camera or something.

I had a lot of fun painting Skuthus the Necromancer. Although he doesn't show up in person in any of the original Conan stories he is supposed to have been one of the formidable ones.

The Grey Man Ape was almost as fun to paint as Skuthus. I decided to give it a dark bluish hide to contrast with its grey fur. I was a bit hesitant about the idea at first, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. The monkey butt was also oddly fun to paint.

I have also painted a Spirit Host for Age of Sigmar. I was not sure how I wanted them to look at first and I didn't want them to look like generic green, blue or grey ghosts. So I settled on giving them a blue base colour that I washed with purple and highlighted with thinned out white. I like the otherworldly look they ended up with.

It's been a bit since seeing this thread last, and wanted to let you know that those demons back there are excellent.

As are the Bretonnian Ghouls!

 :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
I'm thinking of maybe touch up a couple of the demons at some point. I really should get around to make more ghouls. I had the itch to make a bunch of zombies by kitbashing with the Warlord Games Landsknechts and Mantic's zombies. I'm thinking of making one zombie for every Empire province of the Old World.

Very cool vamp! I could have a brew with him at the local pub and hear his perspective 😸
I'm sure that he would have some interesting philosophies on a wide selection of subjects after a drink or two. All of them probably being very morbid though, as expected of a Necrarch vampire.

Very nice! Very dirty and dingy.
I do prefer my undead to look like they have been grave robbing or something.

Goofy? These guys are creepy af!
That's my view too. The idea of an undead Bugs Bunny fills me with dread.

Thanks guys. It's been a while since I painted anything, but I just finished painting the titan Enceladus for the ancient Greek mythology game Mythic Battles - Pantheon. It was a remarkably pleasant miniature to paint and I had fun doing the base. This was also my first time doing lava and it was a neat learning experience.

Actually, awesome doesn’t hit the note. Your colours are so amazing , this looked like it walked out of a film. The lava actually looks like it will burn. How long does it take to achieve this?

I didn't actually keep track of how much time I spent painting Enceladus, but I wanna say maybe 6-8 hours if I also include the base.

I used a white base colour with a thin layer of bright yellow (or a mix of the two) on top and washed it with Citadel's Casandra Yellow until I got the desired tone. I also used the wash on the grey areas around the lava vomit to make it seem like it was emitting a glow. On the flowing lava I made sure to contrasts the yellow with orange and red highlights, and then to top them of I used a conservative amount of dark red mixed with dark grey for the very tips of the flowing lava. I also highlighted the bubbles white. To finish it off it was all washed with Casandra Yellow to create a smooth transition.

I also think the lighting I used when taking the photos helped to bring out the brightness, so I don't think that it would look quite as dramatic on the tabletop. I kinda feel that I got lucky with this one since I mostly went with my guts on how to paint it. Having photo references of lava definitely helped.

Here's a WIP Necromancer that I made out of an old leftover Empire Wizard I had lying around. I'm thinking of painting him a bit like a vulture.

I finished painting my Necromancer which I decided to name Skivir Voltor. I kinda managed to break off his staff at some point and I did a half assed pinning which I then just decided to reinforce with a ghostly swirl that is drawn into the severed head. So as a result I ended up giving Skivir a minor backstory about how he is inept as a Necromancer and it's the staff that's doing all the work for him; including chanting incantations through the severed head.

I also like to think that I have gotten rather good at sculpting fur.

Hey thanks.

I think that I decided to go with this as a backstory.
Quote
Skivir is actually inept as Necromancer and before the time of the Malign Portents he was little better than a petty robber. While looting the ruins of a citadel he came upon the Staff of the Doomlord in a forsaken Necromancer's lair. The staff was a manifestation of the spirit of a Necromancer from the world that was. The ghostly artifact could tell that Skivir was a fool, so it imbued upon him visions of power and influence if he would just take up the staff and aid Nagash in the great work. Now Skivir wanders Shyish posing as a boastful Necromancer; trusting the Staff of the Doomlord to carry out all the magic.

I might decide to try writing a short story about him later. I have been thinking about learning to write stories anyway and the AoS setting is so flexible that I might as well use that as a starting point.

Hey thanks, guys.

Got nothing new to show at the moment, but I have ordered 40 Mantic skeletons which I will probably show off soon. I have also decided upon some fluff for my AoS minis. The region is somewhat inspired by WHFB Nordland and the Free Guilders there will bear their colours.

I intend to have my dudes coming from a coastal region in Shyish named Reef of the Ancient Sigmariner with Ancient Sigmariner being the capital city of the region. Out in the ocean there will be Realm Gate that connects to an ocean in Ghyran, allowing for sailing between the realms. The free people of the reef travel through the gate to trade with the Duradin who lives at the other side and are doing extensive mining operations in monolithic petrified trees, which they have carved out to resemble proud watch towers of old. Because of the connection to Ghyran through the Realm Gate, the reef in Shyish enjoy a bountiful ocean with a fertile coastline ripe for agriculture. Further into the hinterlands the Wight Kings (who are forever feuding with eachother over ancient slights) defend the borders against invading armies, while enjoying an arrangement with the free people who pay them tribute by offering them criminals and captive enemies convicted to death.

As of the events of the Malign Portents the region has been thrown into an upheaval, but Ancient Sigmariner still stands. The Wight Kings are at open war with eachother and they have started to demand that the free people make their allegiance clearer. Meanwhile the Legion of Sacrament is creating a foothold and Arkhan the Black has ordered the construction of stronghold near the border to remind the inhabitants whom their true regent is.

Thanks guys. I honestly didn't think very hard about the fluff; I just went with something that seemed cool.

I just recently painted a Wight King and a couple of prototype skeletons. I have always wanted to do something with orange and checkers seemed like a good option to make the shields more interesting to look at. They are marked with a token black pyramid to remind the Wight Kings that they ultimately serve Nagash.

I really enjoyed painting the Wight King previously known as Krell. He is truly one of the finer miniatures in the later line of WHFB miniatures. I do however object to the idea that Krell could have possibly fitted in a regiment formation. His axe is so ridiculously huge that I had to mount him on a rather large base.

I have also made a prototype Free Guild/Empire mini for Age of Sigmar. I made him out of the Warlord Games/Pro Gloria plastic kit and a plastic halberd made by Fireforge Games. I kinda like how he turned out even though I didn't want to spend any time on the eyes because that would be too much effort for 100+ of these true scale minis. So now after all these years I have finally presented a painted Empire mini on the forum for Empire players. :closed-eyes:

The skeletons are ace. The shields are freehand? Respect!

The colours of the Empire Halberdier are nice. But I can't help thinking that his legs are short and arms are stiff. Problem of that Landsknecht box. But from an upward frontal viewpoint, they work very well, and that's how you'll be looking at them in rank and file at least. Like the full beard.

Please, more!  :-)

Thanks. :smile2:

The shields are indeed free-hand and quite easy to do. :biggriin:

I do suppose that the legs might appear too short, but from what so can tell the proportions seems to actually be anatomically correct. The slashed sleeves also creates the illusion of a much larger upper body. I was alslo thinking of making one of the boxes into swordsmen, but I'm not sure which plastic kit would be the best fit for a kitbash.

I think maybe you need to mount his arms slightly higher up? He looks slouched and gibbon-armed, but if you allow for more puffy material above his actual shoulder bones I think it'll make all the difference.

Other than that, he's ace! And the skeletons are brilliant.  :::cheers:::

Thank you.

I mainly have the arms like that because I was originally putting them on square bases for a regiment and I wanted to avoid the classic collision when ranking them up, but I recently decided to put them onto round bases instead. So I will see if so can make them seem more lively in the future. The collar is also a bit high so the heads are prone to slouch a bit of you don't trim it.

I'm also thinking of ordering some advancing metal ones later this year when ordering the plastic Warlord missile landsknecht box. Which I'm currently unsure if they would be better with crossbows or handguns in AoS.
