The Heavens above
« on: August 30, 2021, 11:39:27 AM »
Caeli enarrant gloriam Dei et opera manuum eius adnuntiat firmamentum,
dies diei eructat verbum et nox nocti indicat scientiam.
non sunt loquellae neque sermones quorum non audiantur voces eorum;
in omnem terram exivit sonus eorum et in fines orbis terrae verba eorum

Ps. 18 (19), 2-3

The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

Many people reported a UFO over Belgium on Monday:

It turned out to be the launch of the Landsat 9-Satellit by an Atlas V 401 rocket from the Space Launch Complex-3E in California.

Interesting.

Enjoyed the video of the meteor, too.

Thanks! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

On Saturday, Oct. 9th, an M1.6-class solar flare in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2882 hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth.

SOHO coronagraphs recorded the storm cloud coming almost straight toward us:

As it says on the lined website: "So far this year, dozens of CMEs have missed Earth. Many of them were near misses, provoking no more than minor geomagnetic unrest as they passed by. This time, however, the sun is shooting straight.

A direct hit by this cloud on Oct. 11th could cause a geomagnetic storm. Context: This is not the Carrington Event. Likely storm levels will reach only G1 or G2 on a scale that goes all the way up to G5. Satellites and power grids will survive with ease while auroras dance harmlessly in high-latitude skies."

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH:
A strong G3-class geomagnetic storm is possible on Oct. 30th when the CME from yesterday's X1-flare is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. Such storms can spark naked-eye auroras as far south as Illinois and Oregon (typically 50° geomagnetic latitude) and photographic auroras at even lower latitudes. Lesser G1 and G2-class storms could persist through Halloween as Earth passes through the CME's wake.

THE CORONAL MASS EJECTION: Here it comes. A coronal mass ejection (CME) launched into space on Oct. 28th by exploding sunspot AR2887 is heading almost directly for Earth. SOHO coronagraphs recorded the CME racing away from the sun faster than 1260 km/s (2.8 million mph):

The movie is full of "snow"--speckles caused by solar protons striking the coronagraph's CCD camera. These particles were accelerated toward the spacecraft (and toward Earth) by shock waves in the leading edge of the CME. Traveling at relativistic speeds, the protons reached us in less than an hour. The CME itself will take more than two days to cross the sun-Earth divide. ETA: Oct. 30th.

THE SOLAR FLARE: Yesterday, Oct. 28th, the sun experienced a global eruption. It began at 1535 UT when sunspot AR2887 unleashed an X1-class solar flare. The blast created a massive tsunami of plasma that rippled across the entire solar disk:

The plasma wave was about 100,000 km tall and moved through the sun's atmosphere faster than 700 km/s (1.6 million mph). These are also called "Moreton waves," named after American astronomer Gail Moreton who discovered them in 1959. Moreton waves often herald the launch of a CME.

Is sunspot AR2887 finished? Probably not. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-class flares and a 25% chance of another X-flare in the next 24 hours.

I saw Venus just before the sun came over the horizon this past Sunday, it was the most brilliant I'd ever seen it.

Space ship/satellite hits an asteriod ...

 https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-s-dart-mission-hits-asteroid-in-first-ever-planetary-defense-test

... apparently NASA's mission with co-operation from other countries has succeeded in hitting its target.  An Italian observatory unit was deployed from the space vehicle that hit the asteroid, some days before in order to film its crashing into the side of it.  Various countries around the globe are now watching to see if the impact speed's up the asteroid's orbit around a larger asteroid.  The plan was hopefully to have it speed up enough after impact for the asteroid to make it's orbit around the other asteroid by approximately 70 seconds.

Turns out the Italian part that got deployed on Sept 11th has two cameras.  One is for taking wide angle photos, named Luke, and the other is for taking more detailed photos, named Leia.

Saw a report that said NASA is hoping to learn if the asteroid's orbit was effected some time in a few weeks.
