Given the carbon dating, it is likely that later Greeks inhabitants of Troy found the timbers in the Bronze Age layers, and just declared them to be the remnants of the Wooden Horse. Reminds me of the fake histories I had to hear from tourist guides all over the world...

Scepticism can be healthy when it comes to archaeology.

Well, not to archaeology per se, just to jumping to conclusions.

Of course, the same applies to climatology.  :engel:

Having done some research, it turns out the Jerusalem Post fell for (or warmed up?) a hoax that was already published in September 2014:

I felt it was too good to be true and nothing was heard from the Archaeology groups on FB.

Good job, Fidelis!

In Sweden we found a missing iron age "castle" recently. The archaeologist was just being curious about an area that used to be an island in the middle of sacred bog and lake.

Turns it is the largest fortified settlement on Öland from the Migration period.

The formerly largest, Gråborg, is over 200 meter in diameterso beating that is big stuff.

That is fascinating, and I'd like to see more detail on it at some point. :icon_cool:

And I can see this sort of thing turning up in a fantasy setting! :icon_idea:

Thanks for posting Mathi! :::cheers:::

Meanwhile ... here is another Timeteam video about the excavation of a Neo-lithic site in England that had been originally dug at it in the 1920s ...

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdeYgsHmr0s

Besides being an intriguing dig, it is also interesting to learn of how the site was dug at the first time around.

And I enjoyed the comparison of axes made way they were in the Meso-lithic versus Neo-lithic eras.

I remember comparing axes from the mesolithic and neolithic from Sweden and it really struck me how economical and minimalistic the mesolithic axes were compared the neolithic ones.
Neolithic stoneknapping is marvelously sophisticated and advanced technically but what a waste of material.
The mesolithic use of stone really maximized the amount of cutting edge you got out of a block.

HUGE GOLD TREASURE FOUND NEAR JELLING

One of the largest, richest and most beautiful gold treasures in Danish history so far has just been found, just outside Jelling. The enormous find of almost 1 kg of gold, i.a. consisting of huge medallions the size of saucers, has again seen the light of day, after 1500 years in the Danish soil.

from https://www.vejlemuseerne.dk/viden-og-forskning/artikler/kaempe-guldskat-fundet-naer-jelling/  (with more details and pictures).

I'm surprised it was still intact. The stale bits I throw onto the front yard tend to dissolve before the birds get them
