Eurobash Debrief - 2010 Planning
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:01:07 PM »
Soth and I have been having a few discussions trying to evaluate the two Eurobashes held so far.

Last year when the idea was suggested I was quietly sceptical about the usual internet enthusiasm and when we started looking at 15-20 all saying they would come I think a few of us went:
"Yeah so we'll see 10 if we're lucky"  :icon_wink:

So what happens - 17 turn up and we have a great weekend.

So fast forward a year and given the success of last year, no internet scepticism for me  :icon_rolleyes: - certainly everyone who came last year will want to come this year, plus all those who didn't come last year.and then some of the newer members seeing pics and hearing what went on .....well we'd probably have 25 or more.

So one big kick in the nuts later ............ what went wrong. :icon_question:

Don't get me wrong - I had a great time, and actually overall enjoyed it more than 2008, but it would have been even better with more members.

Differences:

2008:
Mid July
Two days - Sunday and Monday (a Belgium Holiday)
Cheap Campsite Accomodation in very small 4-man huts.
25-30minutes travelling between Campsite and Gaming CLub
Gaming mainly centered on W-E Marienburg Campaign

2009
Mid August
Three Days - Friday (Belgian Holiday) Saturday & Sunday
More expensive Hotel in centre of town
5 Minute walk to Gaming Club
Attempts at Might Empires style Campaign that struggled a bit to get everyone gaming at the same time.

Personally I really liked the three days, and the hotel which although dearer was excellent value, and the breakfast built iinto the price meant we didn't need any lunch.

The main thing Soth and I felt was the dates. Most no-shows seemed to revolve around other holiday activities.

So what do you guys think.

We are looking for comments and opinions from those who have attended, and those who considered attending, so other North American Bashers can butt out ............  :engel:

I suggest next year the dates are posted in extremly big font on the homepage for the month prior to it. Yes, that'd be smart.

.......... and people would still not know when it was and try to turn up a day late .............  :engel:

We're more interested in holiday trends.

For examples:
In 2008 we guessed July was good because the Universities were on vacation, but maybe the normal schools weren't.

August can be the holiday month so family could override a 'boys weekend'

We're looking at why people did or didn't come, and honest answers not bullshit, so we can try and make next year as accessible as possible.

Well as I will never ever even consider proposing that I might come to any sort of bashing or smashing with you guys. I would say from this year on I am done with studies, I have work and after half a year I also have access to vacation (first half year there is a no vacation bar so next year I will have around 45 days of holidays...hurray) so from my point everything is fine as it is and the trollards that didnīt come will come next year as the missed the time of their live.  :::cheers:::

By the way I "might" come 2010!  :::cheers:::

What prevented me coming was the plane ticket.... :-(

Mmmmm.... I know this guy who works for an airline..  :biggriin:

But in all seriousness, do tell us why you didn't make it.

Many reasons are possible, don't hold back.

"Having seen Midaskis and Soth's pictures, I didn't want to have to look upon their ugly mugs for a whole weekend" is as good a reason as "Money", "other egagements"or even "actually getting engaged" (although we have an attendant who managed to do both).

Depending on timing, I may be there (without models) next year!

This year, there was this small puddle in the way...

Mid-August gives me more time to save up. :-)

Must we talk about it now? I've still got an entire college year before that, and I don't want to be looking foward to August already!  :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

Having spent too much money on Warhammer miniatures this year to be comfortable shelling out more for a weekend of gaming.

Plus i am saving my vacation to get as much free time as possible when our little one gets born in a few months.

There was a sudden buildup of work for my student club, which meant I had to be at home on saturday and monday. The weekend of the bash was also the weekend of the beginning of the introduction (showing new students around  town and familiarizing them with our club) and as such it is a very busy time.

Personally, I think a date in early July would be better (although I couldn't have made it then either, but anyway....) as people are both less likely to be on a holiday and probably not refocusing on Uni work already.

I don't know... The last three weeks of July are most of the time the period when a lot of people have holidays, at least here in Belgium. Although it's a little spread out.

But refocusing on Uni work? In August, really? You still have a month worth of vacation after that. Unless you have to re-do your exams of course.

Meh, not Uni work per se but more student club work, which starts up around the 10th usually. There's some time off but for me there's no way to predict when.

I know I'm from the wrong side of the pond but, as far as dates go:

We've always make our tournies and events for early June (before Grad ceremonies and holidays but usually decreased schedules) or October (everything's in full swing, easier to book time, no one has stuff in October).  Summer dates just never get great attendance bc of too many conflicts.  August is right out unless you book it now for next year.
Sometimes the "Old Ones" just need to leave.....

If we start playing with our dingelidongs, I will join no matter the cost...

Seriously, this year all sounded swell and stuff, but putting in on the first weekend after my vacation and first week of work would have been suicidal for me.

Yes I fly Kamikaze planes.

Really.

Hopefully next year it will lie more in line with end of work season or during vacation.  :icon_cool:

Clearly awesome campaign army lists are required for maximum fun-icity.

The Marienburg campaign hype surely helped.

Although I view that as non-imperative, albeit fun. And the scenarios did more for the event than the awesome army lists (remember how we were all still struggling with them ? And made wrong lists, which you pointed out, and rightly so)
