Title: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: red shift on November 10, 2015, 07:02:44 AM
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hawkwargames/dropfleet-commander/comments

Drop fleet commander is a game very much in the vein of battlefleet gothic and has the same lead designer, Andy chambers. I am shamelessly plugging it here as I know there are some bfg fans about and I think it looks fantastic. I have pledged at captain level.

i'll likely pledge for this.
Don't they do a ground version of this? I think if they do Whitey has played and liked it.

Captain seems a really bad deal compared to commodore or commander.
50 quid more for one cruiser

Then 40 more for two fleets and 3 more cruisers.

You get two starter sets though so four fleets but obviously of the two base sets only. I am seriously considering updating to Commodore but I want to see the shaltari painted pics before I add the extra cash as I'm not sure how much I want the other kickstarter exclusive battlecruisers

Yep, not far from truro. May well be up for travelling to get a game of this in. I should have good sized ucm and scourge fleets, was very tempted by phr but the lack of painted frigates put me off.

late backer pledge for those who missed out on this:

http://dfcpm.com/

the shaltari fleet is not great looking but I love their DZC models.

PHR fleet is great. UCM fleet is generic and fine. Don't like the scourge models, for fleet or zone.

I enjoyed this podcast, talking to the founder, designer, leader etc of Hawk games.

Now really excited for this, i've bolted on the launch assets, space station and the exclusive Scourge battlecruiser.

Hoping for a smoother and better BFG, basically.

Impatiently waiting for it to come which should be in June.

The bolt on for the starte fleets is £35 each (3 cruisers 4 frigates), or the starter set is £60 (UCM and Scourge starter fleets, accessories to game with, rulebook) if anoyne is interested to piggyback on me.

bums me out Scourge are my least fav DZC models because I love their ships.

KS delayed, as per usual. Think it's at packing and delivery stage now, or very soon.
Excited, ready to paint something again after flogging myself too hard finishing admech before eurobash.

Think it'll be hard to get the multi colour beetle skin sheen on them (The chap used an airbrush to do it), but i think they'll take inks and drybrushing really well.

The beetle effect is really nice! I guess a more normal painting technique would still look good though.

Light silver base and then green and purple ink watered down and layered. Easy paint job. Light silver dry brush to finish.

I think space station was £30 on the starter, so a bit more retail.

Modular, so can make one ginormous one, 7 small, 3 small and 2 medium, 3 medium etc etc.

They look great. How did you do the painting?
Title: Re: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: Finlay on November 13, 2016, 11:09:33 AM
watered down layers guilleman blue glaze, leviathan purple and baal red over a silver spray. (I think I didnt water down enough, and also think it should be more purple/reddish.

light drybrush of balthasar gold, focusing on the spines.

Nuln oil gloss over the top to blend it together and make it shiny.

Very light highlight of my lightest silver on the edge of the spines.

Waystone green technical paint for the eyes on the front. (wondering if I should do this red for more contrast?)

Pretty quick and easy but not 100% happy with it

Hoping to get a test game in this weekend (and so finish my starter fleet painting by then)

we played about 4 turns- I hadn't set up the table before hand and Matt needed to go at 5. We went slower than I expected, but I really should have pre-set the table!

turn 1- we both moved on, My scourge on silent running.

pic of my fleet- not quite finished but probably can't tell the difference from here.

I dropped a couple of my frigates into low atmosphere then used them to active scan his ships, and did a bit of damage to both the opposition cruisers, including a double 6 from my shenlong, doing 2 criticals, and as a 2damage weapon 4 damage without saves!

Matt's light cruiser then shot at my frigate in low atmosphere, using the "calibre" special rule to boost his effectiveness.
2 damage cripples my frigates, and most crippled results do 2 more damage, so my frigate died.

He also shot my heavy cruiser with his gun frigates, rolling 5 4+ on 6 dice, resulting in 3 damage.

I "weapons free" my Shenlong and battered his carrier, leaving it with 2 hull points and unable to shoot or launch any ships next turn.

in retaliation Matt managed a mazimum of 6 damage with his burnthrough laser against the Shenlong.

this is when I forgot to carry on taking photos!

My Wyvern (close action cruiser) then annihilated a frigate and MAtt tried to ram his damaged and no weapons cruiser into it, but failed the roll and so it died.

At some point matt killed one of my strike carriers and right before he had to go I blew up his heavy cruiser, whixh exploded and killed my cruiser and crippled my other cruiser.

At the end of turn 4 there wasn't too much left on the board- a crippled cruiser and 2 frigates for me, and a crippled cruiser and 3 frigates for Matt.
Matt had both strike carriers alive though, so likely would have won if we'd carried on.

It was fun, but 4x3 definitely felt too small.

I really liked the alternate activation and strategy element with battlegroup ordering.
Need to figure out how to do damage and not get blatted in return! Scourge want to get close, I think I did a bit too much shooting early on, instead of going silent running as long as possible then trying to go for a big blast at the start of turn 3 or something.

It looks fun! I like the planetary surface map. I'd like to play this.

but 4x3 definitely felt too small.

Was that the recommended size for that number of ships?
Title: Re: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: Finlay on November 21, 2016, 11:14:18 AM
that's the size of the paper maps you get in the starter box- and it comes with a recommended scenario for starter fleet vs starter fleet (which is roughly 550 vs 550)

I definitely wouldn't want to play 1000 pts on 4x3, or 1500 on 4x4. I think i'll buy a 6x4 matt like Adam did.

Also I feel the need for accesories to mark the sectors, clusters and debris fields- people have started to produce them.

Oh and the damage pegs on the bases definitely didn't work, and im not convinced about the atmosphere/spike use either, so need either tokens/counters for that, or paper book keeping like you need with BFG.

Matts hoping to come round one evening soon-ish (so no child interference) and I can pre-prepare the table and try and note down a proper battle report.
It was hard to do the battle report with the alternate activations and changing battlegroup activation order.
Title: Re: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: rufus sparkfire on November 21, 2016, 11:49:38 AM
It does seem like a small playing area, but I wondered if the game was designed with that size in mind. Perhaps you aren't supposed to have a lot of maneuver room!

I didn't realise that you track damage on the models in this. Do the bases track the relative altitudes of the ships too?

Quote
It was hard to do the battle report with the alternate activations and changing battlegroup activation order.

Just taking regular photos and giving an overview on what happened is good enough. There's no need to give a lot of detail.
Title: Re: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: Finlay on November 21, 2016, 11:56:31 AM
thought detail maybe good so people get more an idea of how the game actually works.

yes, the regular bases have an inner ring that twists inside the main base, that you use to track orbital layer (high orbit, low orbit, atmosphere) and "spikes"- you get spikes from firing certain weapons or doing orders, or being scanned, and the increase the range you can be shot at.

you suffer penalties shooting between orbital layers, and your ships die if they go into Atmosphere unless they have "atmospheric" special rule.
shooting in atmosphere only hits on 6s unless

The bases also have little holes to stick the damage pegs in, but way too fiddly.

If you don't have manuevre room, the games will just turn into a huge fight on the center board I think! Maybe they're meant to.

It looks great as a game.
I think the ships will standout better against a black background though.
I bet the bases seemed like a great idea, but are a bit fiddly in practice.
I'd also like to give it a go. We'll have to meet up in the new year.

Title: Re: Drop Fleet Commander kickstarter (bfg/Andy chambers)
Post by: Finlay on November 22, 2016, 02:18:06 PM
you're not "supposed" to use a black background, as it's all about dropping assets onto critical locations on planets.

I believe there are some scenarios with space stations, though.

Phr wip. Not overly happy. One is several watered down layers green over a silver base. The other is a light green edge highlight, blended with green ink.

The stripes also a bit rubbish, hard to get the tape flat on the curved and ridged hull.

Do a chumley and build up the colour in layers of ink. You'll get the flat finish then.

I'd either get a 4x4 one or look elsewhere.

Post by: Finlay on November 28, 2016, 12:31:41 PM
dont think there are any 6x4 on the market yet.

maybe i should get a 4x4 to see us over.
people think that size is ok up to about 1250.

some people think its ok for 1500 too...

Do a chumley and build up the colour in layers of ink. You'll get the flat finish then.
I did this with Scourge, but i think i'm too impatient. it's always a bit blotchy. Masked on the scourge by the gold drybrush and black ink over the top.

I think I either need to add a more vivid highlight if highliting them, or go for green ink layers over a silvery spray to try and get a metallic green finish.
I think the stripes didn't work so might just leave them! At the moment I think they look totally unfinished. Maybe finishing the silver and the tail panels will massively help, like doing bases on a 40k model...

It's really tempting me to buy an airbrush!

For a moom, yes. Not a planet, the craters are to big.

Look good though. Just go with a 4x4 matt. It's plenty to begin with.

Don't want o spend £50 on a 4*4, then £65 6*4 in a few months!

better?

still feel likes its missing something- need's something on the broadside and also at the front of the hull. Maybe I need a little stencil and just do a black or red design?

Yes, that looks nice!

Put some more blue on the silver bits on the sides, and a few stripes or something on the green bit? Those models are a bit too smooth really. It's hard to make them look spaceship-sized.

Like rufus said some blue on the side silver bits.

Are there any transfers you could use, nice flat surfaces for them?

That's a good shout! I could utilise some eldar or dark eldar transfers. I think plopping a transfer on the front with some blue on the sides would finish it off.

Aldaris prefers the first 2 green ones, but I think the inked one is nicer.

The inked one is better. Have you got any yellow ink? You could do a 50/50 mix with green ink and highlight the leading edges. Let it dry, then do a yellow only highlight at the edges. It'll lift the colour. I'd water the ink down with 20% water to to ease the transition. Finally a 50/50 watered down gloss nuln oil to finish and glaze them.
Also on transfers I put a coat of 'ard coat over them to seal them on prior to the last ink wash.

thanks, I was unsure how to add highlights to it, but more ink seems a decent shout.

i've got blue, green, red, purple ink, plus nuln gloss.

I'm concerned nuln will darken it too much. Maybe doesn't matter.

NUln oil will darken it but water it down first, that will limit the darkening.
To highlight you need a yellow ink really. You might have to pop to gw.

Casandora yellow (shade)
Or lamenters yellow (glaze)?

Ive not used the glaze range, might be to thin. Stick to the shade one

I use the glaze for my admech and scourge models.

The shade yellow looks orange jn the pot!
But I got it. Will test today if I get some free time with kids.

Wet the entire surface with a weak coat if green before you start to blend in the yellow. Work from edges in with the tip of brush.

Matt whupped me in our 2nd game (which we actually finished).
He killed my light cruiser before it did anything, with an 8 damage burnthrough attack (6 criticals), which meant I just didn't have the variety and scope of firepower to respond.
I managed to kill both his cruisers, but his Shenlong Heavy cruiser was basically unscathed so dominated from turn4 onward once the rest were all fucked up.

I also messed up my movement on my strike carriers, and matt utilised the Scourge's faster movement to get more troops dropped to the surface.

While I can (and will) complain about Matt's flukey burnthrough roll to melt my light cruiser, he definitely outplayed me and deserved the win.

game took us 3 hours. (If we were short of time I'd have conceded after turn 4 I think). Hopefully 2.5 hours next time.

Think we'll swap back fleets back again next time, and then perhaps expand the points and/or try a different scenario.

My inked PHR ship looks better up close, but from the tabletop I think the stripey ones look better. You can barely see the blue detailing, or the yellow ink edges.
I'm wondering about striping the inked one in silver paint, then layer the yellow ink onto those stripes, to get inky yellow stripes?

What a great difference the mats and paint make - I doubt 'both' fleets were painted though ........................ that's my boy  :engel:

Dropfleet t-shirt!

Nice photos! The yellow stripe ships do look better from a distance.

So are there bases or something on the planet that you have to drop the troops onto?

I almost wore my t-shirt too! haha.

@Mids, the scourge fleet is totally finished. Nuln oiled- and silver highlighted last night just before the game. I wacked the first green ink layer on the PHR just so they'd look semi-painted during the game.

@Rufus, yup, have to drop troops onto the cardboard "clusters"- which have varying numbers of "sectors" inside them. It's how you score Victory points!

Matt also shot down one of my strike carriers (frigates which can drop troops) with the defence battery inside the military sector in the middle of the board. boo!

Ah - both your fleets then - so painted.
I saw Matt's last weekend ........................... in their solid grey state  :engel:

Still he's quicker at writing army lists ..........................................

I can't decide if I should do green and tan for my UCM, (like my tau) or blue and yellow (like my eldar).

blue feels a bit garish for them.

I like it! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

Too bad the bases aren't clear, the black sticks out too much, especially when on the cool looking planet and moon maps.

And I see halfmen!

That looks nice! Which fleet is that ship from? The same as the other green ones you did? It looks like a different style.

It's UCM, normal humans.

The other was PHR, android futurey humans.

I can't decide on a scheme for them, so have stopped painting them!

I like the design of the UCM one more than the PHR. It looks easier to paint too!

*Rolls dice*

*Worst cripple roll, ship dies"
