Title: Dougheim's mad wanderings (Wissenlanders)
Post by: lt dougheim on February 02, 2014, 04:47:29 PM
Hi,
First off I have been a long time lurker here. I quite thoroughly enjoy watching everyones progress with their individual armies, and thought I might as well give it a go myself.  I have been collecting since the late 90's and most of my collection is metal, no finecrap here.  I can get quite scatter brained with my ideas and Im hoping this thread will help keep me focused. Anyway I miss the good old days of 5th edition when the empire had ogres, halflings, dwarves, kislev, war wagons, and reiksguard on foot.  I want to create an army that focuses on each of these and every Imperial institution, from the church of Sigmar, to Estalia.

First up is Von Dougheim's Mortar Storm.  I don't like the rocket battery, the empire should have big guns not rockets. This is my counts as unit for it. Its not finish, Im waiting for a hand wheel to put on the gear box up front, as well as some rivets else where. Let me know what you think of it or if there is anything I should change. Once I get the first one built, Ill be building 3 more.

:::cheers::: :::cheers::: You've got my attention. That is going to be a very interesting journey to watch.

I am rigth now busy with light weight guns, but still. Could you do a  tutorial on that mortar?  It seems to me I am not the only one curious for the story of it.

looks awesome, but make sure u make some stoppers to put behind the wheels or something coz well u can imagine what happens if u shot a cannon with 4 wheels. Ur cannon would disappear in the other direction lol!

All in all looks really cool

The mortar barrel is made from 3/4 aluminum round stock.  Im a tool and die maker and I made them on a lathe. The through hole and the tiny hole for the ignition powder  I drilled on a mill.  Heres a photo of the pieces to make the remaining mortars.  If you have any questions on how I made any of the pieces just ask.

If you look at the front and back of the chassis they are 4 tow lugs. I figure they could ties ropes to those and stake it to the ground. But I do like the idea of stoppers or wedges. Ill try to make some and see how they look.

And just for fun here is my beloved Halfling army that I started several years ago. All of the painted stuff is 3 years old, the rest of the pictures are minis that I need to finish. I have enough parts to make 25 more knights but they aren't pictured.  I thought Id include them as the Moot is the best part of the empire. I cant wait for White Knight to make his halflings available. Also when I get to painting the rest of the halflings do you guys thinks I should stick with the green scheme or maybe go with a red scheme and blend the new and old units?

By Sigmar, that is a lot of halflings! And they look amazing!  :eusa_clap:

Very jealous of your access to a proper lathe (and proper lathe skills) - there are so many possibilities!

And I would stick with the green scheme - perhaps break it up with an elite unit or two if you are a bit bored of it!

Do you have any halfling flagellants? I'm thinking less fanatics and more smashed out of their little heads on scrumpy? Drunken morris men perhaps?

Its been awhile but I finally finished my mega mortars.  Heres a picture of the complete 4 gun battery.

(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/keckmatt/megamortars_zps75cd21cc.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/keckmatt/media/megamortars_zps75cd21cc.jpg.html)

Up next, I have been thinking about making proxies for the luminark and hurricanum for my halflings. Im thinking about making a dinner bell of doom and a soup wagon.

Till next time,
Matt

I hope this bit of threadomancy is OK.  I have been wanting to collect all of the varient steam tanks but they are really hard to come by. So I have decided to scratch build the ones I cant get my hands on. First up the Von Zeppel.  I machined the bottom of the platform out of 3/16ths plastic card. The other picture shows the top rail, which is machined out of 1/8th inch plasticard.
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/keckmatt/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_135604_zps4a3tvaxf.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/keckmatt/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_135604_zps4a3tvaxf.jpg.html)
To align the top rail with the floor, and to space the spindles, I built a fixture to keep everything aligned.

(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/keckmatt/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_135625_zpstbbn94lc.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/keckmatt/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_135625_zpstbbn94lc.jpg.html)

Lastly the assembled platform.
(http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac109/keckmatt/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_165755_zpsmqmvzdyv.jpg) (http://s890.photobucket.com/user/keckmatt/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_165755_zpsmqmvzdyv.jpg.html)

Now I need to do the detailing.

Very impressive! When you say "machined", is that done with some kind of computer-driven tool? I do not object to the use of such things - I, for one, welcome our new robot overloads - I am merely interested.

Yes, I used some cad/cam software to design the pieces. Then I programed a 3 axis cnc mill to cut them out. :icon_biggrin:

Little bit of an update. I finished detailing the upper and lower rails, plus hung the shields and built the hatch. Hopefully I  will get the spikes and lanterns on next weekend.

Its kind of funny, I  was going through your thread and saw your Von Zeppel. It is what gave me the idea to make one.  I wish they were easier to make, I probably have around 30 hours into the build so far.

Thanks for the compliments. My halflings are my pride and joy. If there is anything you would like to see let me know and ill take some pictures.

Steveb heres a few pictures of my mini tank. It fits on a cavalry base. I use him as an engineer on mechanical steed. The barrel is removable, so I can put different weapons on it. Your thread and one other is what inspired my current quest to build all 5 varient steam tanks. :::cheers:::

And here's a little update on the Von Zeppel.  I have pinned the engineers in place and added the spikes to the top rail. The spikes are from the chaos space marine vehicle trophy rakes. They also aren't glued into the holes that I drilled for them.

I haven't picked up a paint brush in years. Over the last couple of weeks I got the itch to start painting again. Sitting down to start painting I discovered half of my paints were bone dry. No biggie, so I went to my local game store to purchase more. There I found out that GW had changed all there paint names and the owner of the store no longer stocked the paints. :eusa_wall: With the desire fairly strong to paint soon, I drove a hour to the next closest game store. Thankfully he had most of the paint that I wanted. My hopes are to post here every week or two with at least some progress. I have two main projects that im going to alternate between, Wissendlanders and halflngs of the Moot. Heres my first bit of progress ten halberdiers with command and a unit filler.

What Naitsabe said: well-done classics!

Isn't the second rank halberdier pose the '92 Halberdier 3? So not a conversion.

Naitsabes, Zygmund is correct those are all stock metal halberdiers. Most of my models will be metal figures. Except the drummer he has a plastic body with the old metal drummer arms.

StealthKnightSteg the local store didn't have any paint. He apparently stopped carrying GW products altogether and now mainly caters to card players. He is still able to order items but I would have to wait for it and pay retail.

Im currently working on three more ranks of halberds plus a warrior priest. Im hoping to have them done by the weekend. Everyone else thanks for the compliments. I appreciate it.

More classic goodness. :)

I think you have a really nice balance with the colours - relatively plain and muted, fitting for infantry, but enough highlights and colourful details to make them pop.

Thanks! I usually work with a small color palette with dark earth tone colors. I really avoided working with yellow, red or white on large sections of models because I had trouble with them in the past. You never get better without trying so Im  experimenting with a lot of colors and techniques that I avoided in the past. Also the color scheme has a dual inspiration, the province of Wissenland and my favorite football team the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The halberdiers are all older GW models. I believe the were released in the early nineties. Heres a link to the stuff of legends, http://www.solegends.com/citcat1998us/c1998usp103-02.htm . They made 10 variants plus four plug in weapon style. I have separated the armoured and unarmoured models into their own units. When I'm done I should have four units of 25.

Thanks. I filled in the front with milliput and built three more. I plan on covering the milliput with sand and gravel but that will happen after I build the rest of them. I planning on 2 or 3 more designs.

I have always liked loved artillery. One day while perusing the internet I stumbled upon pictures of the Tsar Cannon in Moscow. It is an enormous bronze cannon and it reminded me of the siege cannon from the storm of chaos campaign book. The artwork shows the defenders of Middenheim defending the wall surrounding the city. In the background there is a huge cannon being loaded by ogres. Anyway  I found this on Ebay and will on day use as my siege cannon.

Its also nice to be reminded of those old unarmoured archers - I used to have a bunch back when I first started collecting, I have no idea what I did with them. Probably stupidly sold them. I really liked the leaning over one with the beard. Thanks for the memories!

Thanks, I had a thread on warseer when I painted my halflings. When I was working on it there was a guy who had a thread  called Gobotonnians. It was a huge custom goblin army with bretonnian theme. If that sounds familiar its probably the same
thread you remember.

I have had the same regret selling miniatures. Back when I first started playing warhammer I went through almost every army. I would buy an army play a few games and then trade or sell it for whatever flavor was new. I actually bought and sold my chaos dwarf army 3 times. Any ways I eventually started playing empire around the time I lost my second daughter. I was able to sink myself into the project to help me deal with life. Ever since then empire models have held a special place in my heart.

Aye, I do remember that one. The amount of greenstuff work to make the knights was immense. I actually went looking for your thread not so long ago, army of the moot or somesuch it was called? I couldn't find it, and so guessed it disappeared when Warseer went down

Weekly update, I got three units assembled this week, two blocks of handgunners and a halberdier unit. The standards aren't glued yet. It will make it easier to paint them later and Im pretty sure I'm going to shorten the poles as well. Im also trying to vary the commands as much as possible. The handgunner champions are mordheim figures. The standard bearers are artillery crewmen and a halberdier. The drummers are old 46 villagers. There were two varients of the drummer one with and eye patch and the other with both eyes.

I remember looking at those halberdiers hanging in blister packs in the late 90s, and thinking "id like to have an Empire army" but was too deep in 40k and college to have the spare change to start WFB. Wishing i had them now though as i build my Middenlanders!

We had a little ice storm last night and I took the day off. Had the opportunity to convert a few command models. My goal is not to have too much repetition in the command groups but with only two different metal musicians and standard bearers Im going to have to get creative.

Neato conversion.

Have been wondering what to do with a double of the same standard bearer mini. Maybe put a halberd in his right hand...

Did you have any trouble removing the head and the back of the headscarf?

Removing the head wasnt to bad. I sawed the head off at the neck. Then I took a dremel and ground a divet so the new head would fit snugly into. The tricky part was grinding and filing the headscarf so that it looks like part of the sash that wraps around his torso.

Crikey !!!!!

I 100% agree that these are the best models ever along with the dwarves of the same era. I started playing empire in 2002 and was only interested in plastic models at the time.  About ten years ago I fell in love with metal and decided I wanted to collect all the 4th/5th empire models.  Fortunately I had amassed most of these models before ebay prices went through the roof. :icon_biggrin:

When he gets empire collections he holds back models that he thinks I might like. Between him and the occasional use of ebay I think I have got everything covered. Once I get these done I hope to start putting my chaos dwarves or dogs of war armies together.

Finished assembling my knights panther and my artillery train. The knights panther were a pain in the butt to assemble. I had to grind the inside of their cloaks to get them to sit on their lower halves. The musician is a bretonnian knight of the realm musician. I filed the top of his head flat and glued the top half of a knights panther helmet on. The crew of the war wagons are fixed to a subplate. This will allow me to paint  them easier and I might use the war wagons as a luminark later on.  None of the wheels or guns have been glued on yet either. Ill do that after painting.

TWO warwagons. TWO. Damn. Do you have any marienburg landships hidden away too?

Although I have a feeling you will be peeling those crewmen off soon enough. Painting them like this is going to be a nightmare (I tried something like this once).

The old models have so much more character than the current models.

I just might have a marienburg landship stashed away    :icon_biggrin:. I might also have several more war wagons and a dozen or so steam tanks stashed away with the landship.

I totally agree with you about painting the crewmen attached to the sublate. I left the tabs on all of the crewmen and milled slots into the plastic base. That way all of the engineers can be removed from the plate and easily painted.

Quick update. I assembled  2 units of Reiksguard with command. The musicians were made from the Reiksguard musician on foot model. The war altar is pinned together as smaller assemblies. The flags, griffon statue, grand theogonist, cart, and horses all can be painted separately. Im going to use the Valten models as Archer Lectors. The Valten model on 50mm base has a separate 100mm by 50mm base that it fits inside. When its on the bigger base I'm going to use him as an arch lector on war altar.

Finished assembling a few units. Im not sure if I have shown the kossars before, so Im including them for the nice family photo.  I cant tell you how much I hate glueing the tiny hands onto the mordheim kislev models. Other than that the only other issue I ran into was the standard bearer for the Teutogen Guard. The banner  pole was broken and I had to drill through the hands and banner to completely replace the pole.

Hey guys I need your help. Im trying to assemble the Implacable steam tank. There is one piece that Im not sure where it goes. Its a backpack with lantern. I cant find any photos that show where it goes. I think it should either hang on the inside of the hull or be worn by the crew. im torn about wear to put it. If I hang it on the hull I might put a metal crew in the hull instead of plastic.

I've had a look at the original Steam Tank Returns article in 2004 Annual and there is a pic in the Empire Collectors Guide Second Edition.

The roll and kettle helmet look like they are on the back of the cabin on the edge of the steam barrel. There may be something of the knapsack showing there but I can't be sure.

There is a pic here of it hanging from the funnel.
http://www.sodemons.com/rhempire/300steamtanks/2002implacable/index.htm

I also opened a couple of my stash - both metal - old style box and new but they both have the basic cannon instructions.

I doubt it matters - put it where it works for you and makes sense to you.

Good eye Mids!
Why in the seven circles of hell would you hang it in the most difficult place to get to? They used to hang lanterns on the ships stay’s but they could be accessed by a lanyard. This also may be the most pointless question I ever came up with.

I dont have my books hand, but I think its close to 4000 points in 6th ed rules.

I went ahead and put the sack and lantern bit on the inside wall of the hull. You cant see it from the pictures but its there. Progress has been slow of late. The metal steam tanks are a real pain to assemble. I never did like all the small parts on the boiler that bear weight, especially the wheel \ axle \ piston \ chassis pieces. I just think they're to fragile, so I tried to remedy that by drilling and pinning those pieces together. The last picture shows you the small pieces I'm  talking about. What took forever was I had to do that five times.

Thanks Rowsdower. Here's a few more finished. I now have one of each varient tank that GW made, Conqueror, Sigmar's Hammer, Von Zeppel, Old Reliable and Implacable. I have the parts to make Deliverance but I dont think it ever had rules so Im skipping it for now. The Von Zeppel can come apart to change hull weapons.

Found some inspiration this weekend and started my luminark and hurricanum. I got them roughed out. Im not going to use horses on the luminark, instead Im going to use four acolytes of light surrounding it. The celestrial hurricanum will be towed by horses. Im undecided on the traditional empire barded horses or the old bretonnian horses.

I have to agree with with you guys, so I used the bretonnian horses. I finished the celestial hurricanum.  All the bits, familiars and wizard are still removable. The luminark has all the rivets put on but I dont have wheels for it yet. The original plan called for using standard chariot wheels but they looked tiny on it when I assembled it. I found some 30mm diameter Napoleonic artillery wheels which resembles the metal steam tank wheels I am using on the hurricanum. So it will have to wait till they arrive to finish it.

Then I recently  picked up and ebay listing  for orcs that had a couple of these landsknecht ogres in it. Wow, what an amazing campaign. I dont know how I missed that. Ill  definitely enjoy reading that over next couple of days. If you dont mind me asking, what model did you use for the Granite Breaker?  It is a really great looking model.  A few years back boreas nl had a thread where he built a huge cannon called the crown jewel. This got me looking into siege cannon  when I stumbled upon a Wikipedia article on the Tzar Cannon.  I looked for a long time trying to find a model for this cannon. Finally found this on ebay from a Russian seller. Its cast iron, had a date on the base from the 70's. Whats really neat about it is all the parts are threaded together.

Thanks guys.  Finally got some wheels for my other luminark. They are from treadhead miniature. The are 30mm in diameter and thinner than the metal steam tank wheels. Im trying to incorporate the old pyramid of light from 5th ed into this model. Instead of 6 guys standing in a triangular formation, Im having 4 acolytes of light acting as guardsmen and horses. Im looking for a bunch of candles that I can put on the deck but I havent been able to find any. Any suggestions on where I can get some  would be greatly appreciated. Tomorrow Im going to cut slots into the base forthe acolytes. Also I spent the last two weeks stripping all my common and night goblins. Ill take a few pictures once I get them sorted.

This is different, will there be more to its design?

I want to add more elements to the deck. Also thinking about getting rid of the mirror and adding 2 more braziers.

Im sure it will look awesome once its finished! As for the candles, I found this on youtube (not mine): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9C0nS9b6t8

Youre clearly into diy stuff so why not give this a try!

Thats a cool video. Im going to give that a try this weekend. Thanks.

Great allied contingent/army! Love the Ogre conversions. And the wagons are really cool too. Great vision & skills!  :-)

Im still tinkering with the luminark. I ditched the mirror and went with a bunch of candles. The flames will be painted blue. Which version do you like better, with or without the mirror.

He's a Light wizard, not a Fire Wizard, so I'd rather like to see the candles plus the mirror minus the braziers.

Mostly I want to see you paint the mirror :) But the sensible thing would be to just fit a mirrored surface in there

I like the idea of having a mirror.  And a small real one would be a wonderful addition.

I think Anvil industries makes some kind of Candles?

6 months?  ::heretic::

I also think that the version with the mirror would fit the idea of light wizard more. The candles and braziers look a lot like he belongs to the fire academy.

I too prefer the mirror.

The other thing I would observe is that your wizard need exceptional balance.  :closed-eyes:
Standing on a platform like that, being dragged over all sorts of rough ground, with nothing to cling on to, or prevent him falling off is very brave or foolhardy.  :biggriin:

I have always viewed a War Altar as a sort of 'mobile pulpit' where the wizard could stand protected a bit, and maybe have his magic books or spell parchments on a sort of lectern within the pulpit.

I love the fiery braziers, and the candles are good, but maybe too many - they would constitute a "Health & Safety" risk maybe catching his robes alight.  :engel:

Maybe the mirror at the back, and some sort of pulpit at the front, and possibly side rails to stop him falling off.
I am sure you could find space for a few candles too.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the feedback. I went ahead and made a mirror. It was a pain to cut the glass, it kept fracturing as I cut it with a diamond wheel. The only thing Im not sold on yet is the candles. I was able buy 4 of the shields with lore of light symbol on it. When they arrive Ill put one of them on each side of the luminark.

I like it.

Balance the candles - one each side of the mirror at the back,
Then it looks like you could get 2 each side of the lectern.

Ideally I would have had one of the braziers either side of the lectern, (they are spectacular) but it doesn't look like there is room.

(Of course you could always make the platform a bit bigger  :engel:  - well maybe add a couple of wings/ledges to support the braziers.)

Whoa! Real mirror! So cool!  :icon_biggrin:

I second Padre's idea of spreading the candles a bit over the length of the mobile.

Great work on the mirror, I wasn't expecting a real glass one (maybe polished metal or shiny foil) but that looks brilliant!

Wow, I cant believe its been two months without any updates. I havent accomplished anything with my miniatures, but I have been working on something which should help me get some painting done. I have been working with a small paint desk for the last twenty years and have really out grown it. Recently I came across hobbyzone modular storage units. These were perfect for what I was looking for. The only problem is they wouldnt fit my current desk, so I built a new desk. I would have been done sooner but I tried a new gel stain that went horrifically bad. I spent over 16 hours sanding the stain completely off. What a huge pain. Anyways Im really happy with how it turned out and cant wait to start painting.

The desk looks great! I might look in some of extra hobbyzone stuff next. I'm currently working with some Ikea desk drawers, and it works rather well.
Do you know if these are a little compatible?

Sorry for the slow reply. I'm not familiar with Ikea. I can tell you that the components measure  11.875 in wide, by 5.875 tall, by 5.875 in deep.
