Title: Previously Released Movies Watched Currently ...
Post by: Feanor Fire Heart on March 27, 2021, 06:39:12 AM
I watched "Mars Attacks" and, although its a parody of 50s\60s B-movies along with War of the Worlds and came out the same year as Independence Day, I like it. There's a couple of scenes which didn't age well but overall its as schlocky as intended and has some great moments. I especially like that we see different people with different backgrounds dealing with the presence of aliens. Its a large ensemble cast of characters but its not hard to keep up with them as each one has there own little story during the events of the film and its a welcome sight compared to say Independence Day or the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds movie. I also like the blend of the 60s and 90s style, it really works.  Its grotesque, silly, and dumb but I had a fun time.

I remember when ID4 came out and there was such a fuss about it. In all those years since its aged so poorly. I might have to give Mars Attacks another watch. I havnt seen it in decades.

I myself watched Gods of Egypt the other day on my streaming service and personally; I thought it needed a laugh track

Apparently in the mid 2010s, there was a table top game for it (well, more specifically the collectable cards from 1967 and 1994 that inspired the 96 movie). The main box had a couple of squads of Martians and a squad of human military soliders and a group of civilian heroes. There was also expansion boxes that expanded the "armies" with flying saucers, giant robots, scientists, XCOM style response teams, giant insects, and more. Honestly it sounds kind of fun. I'm not sure if its still in production, but even if it was I still have to much to paint as it is without starting a new project.

The fact that the Martians are the true stars of the movie makes it fun compared to ID4. Plus its just not serious.

Ha! It really should!

So this was pretty neat. A 30 year old Russian version of Lord of the Rings was found. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/05/soviet-tv-version-lord-of-the-rings-rediscovered-after-30-years

And while there's no subtitles yet, here's the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vquKyNdgH3s

I watched "A Monster in Paris" on Prime. Its really good. Its like Beauty and the Beast set in 1910 Paris. "Belle" character is a cabaret performer, the "Gaston" character is the city commissioner, and the "Beast" monster just really likes music.  The story mostly follows a delivery driver, his friend the theater projectionist, and the Belle character as they try to help the "Beast" and protect him from the commissioner that wants to kill the Beast to make himself look good politically. The cabaret performance with the Belle and Beast is really great!

It is really great. We saw it a year or two ago.
Reminds me of Ratatoullie, which we actually saw after it.
Both are great.

I have to explain this first in a round-about way.
In my youth; the Ratings Advice commercial which was on the start of EVERY tape the video Ezy stores had features clips of four movies. I recognised Hucklberry Finn, Back to the future 3 and Terminator 2. The last one always bugged me as I didn't recognise it at all. I recently discovered it on my streaming service; Madonnas 'Body of evidence' It was nearly a parody of itself it was that bad.

Not sure which spaghetti Western was better "Once upon a time in the West" or "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"?

I watched Kiki's Delivery Service. Its an enchanting coming of age movie. The plot is a bit weak (I am noticing a theme here for the 3 Ghibli movies I've seen), but its more about self discovery. It was great.

Admittedly I have only seen The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but I have heard Once Upon a Time in the West is an amazing Western movie.

I hadn't seen Once Upon A Time In The West in probably 25 to 30 years ago.  At the time I thought it was worth seeing, but this time I caught more things than the last.   It does have it's weak moments, but overall it is well worth watching.

By the way, one item that I picked up on this time was the fact that when the harmonica is playing, even from the very beginning, that is the main anti-hero playing it.  Which explains why the three assassins at the begin turn around, after having initially given up.

And Leone's directing is outstanding.  He plays with sound and vision throughout this motion picture, quite good!

It is one of those films that I might watch for a third time.  I don't have many of those.

I'm a big fan of the good, the bad and the ugly. If folks want to mix it up a bit, there's an excellent reimagining called The Good, The Bad and The Weird thats many of the same beats but set in pre-world war two China. I really enjoyed it and has excellent Western movie vibes.

This was re-released for the cinema in 2016 ... a solid trailer ... Barry Lyndon (by Kubrick) ...

I once watched it when much younger, and suspect it is probably worth a second viewing, to see what I missed in my youthful viewing of such masterpieces.

This past Memorial Day ... I watched The Longest Day.  Surprisingly a quick motion picture for it being almost 3 hours long.  I recall enjoying it when much younger than today.  Now there is more of an appreciation for what it attempted to do back in the day.  And for how many actors played small parts, some how appropriate for honoring so many who saw the real action on such a day.

Last night I watched "North West Frontier" from 1959.  This is an adventure film about the warfare of the very early 1900s in North West India, now Pakistan.  The movie stars Lauren Becall and Kenneth More, who are taking a small train across the region to seek safety for a young prince.  There are interesting issues that help provide the plot for the suspense, and I don't want to say too much, because in places I was quite glued to might seat as the scenes were developing.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.  Wouldn't say it is a classic A movie, but certainly not in the realm of a B movie at all.  Worth at least one viewing by movie fans, especially if watching older films is something you like doing.

I collect bad movies [this has a bit to do with my namesake]
The other day i stumbled across a ten movie DVD set which had a train wreck in it, called 'Low blow'
I was CONVINCED i had seen it on MST3K but i was mistaken; Red letter media had ripped it to shreds instead.

I watched "Blade Runner" for the first time (The Final Cut version). Wow, that was an amazing movie. And that ending too! I feel like it sucker punched me, but in a good way. I am surprised its taken me this long to finally see the movie. I feel like I need to watch it again. I know there is a sequel, but I am worried it may taint the intentional ambiguity of this ending. Is it weird that I feel like it should have been 30 minutes to an hour longer to develop the protagonists a bit more?

If you watch 2049 I'd highly recommend watching the 3 accompanying shorts as well, before the film. They were sanctioned by the director and production team. They aren't essential viewing but they just pad out bits of the 'in-between' years between original and sequel.

2022 the anime one is particularly good and is the longest of the 3.  :::cheers:::

I recently watched Robocop 2 for the first time in several years. The theme with the Robocop franchise seems to be that every film isn't as good as its predessessor.
I don't think I could bring myself to watch the 3rd one or the 2014 remake again though

Obviously make sure to watch them in order...

And Adult Swim has announced that they're doing a series called Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

I'll probably continue over in the Literature Thread since the very next day after seeing Blade Runner, I had a 12 hour drive from Mass to Michigan and I got the audiobook "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and wow is that a different story. Like in so many ways. There's a handful of similar characters names and 2-3 similar scenes but it is by and far its own story with completely different characters. The author (Phillip K. Dick) got to read the script for Blade Runner before he passed away and he noted that not only did he like it, but both the movie and book would complement each other. Like they could exist in the same world at the same time and support each other.

Saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang last night.
It was ok. Mix of genres. LA Noire detective movie, british paced quirky movie and something else like a Kevin Klein movie.
Don’t think I will remember it in a year or two.

Saw Tenet 2 weeks ago.
It was ok also. I feel like Nolan was too caught up in some of the visual affects that it distracted from the story not having any twists that weren’t predictable.

I watched Scarlet Street (1945), a famous Noir movie. Chris Cross, a bank cashier, goes down a different street than he usually does after work and finds a woman getting beat up by a man. Chris runs over, hits the man with his umbrella, and saves the girl. The girl (Kitty) entertains Chris for a time as a thank you, and tries to get to know him. Both Chris and Kitty makes huge assumptions about each other which leads to many twists and turns and ultimately both their downfalls. The ending is definitely noir, but there's a few moments in the movie that seemed a bit off to me. Maybe its the style of story telling back in the 40s, or maybe it was just the writers way of getting things to happen, but there were 3 moments with Chris that seemed like it was either out of character or was being too naive for a 40+ year old and 1 with Kitty that seemed blatantly obvious but she just ignores it or chooses not to see it.

Spoiler:

1) Maybe I'm just cynical but the way Kitty talks to Chris at the bar when the first met would have tipped me off, drunk or not, that this woman doesn't like you, but is just being nice.

2) No one, in their right mind, would let someone else take credit for their art, especially if it was lucrative. The fact that Chris went along with this farce felt forced, or maybe his impostor syndrome and lack of self confidence is just that bad.

3) The murder seems out of character for Chris at that point. Maybe if we saw him have a temper, or yell at Kitty or something to make him commit the murder, it would have felt more authentic than just being insulted by the "woman he loves," which he puts up with enough at home with his own toxic relationship. Maybe while she was insulting him we could also hear, in Chris' mind his wife yelling at him from earlier too and we just see him snap. That would have felt more believable.

4) It was pretty plain to Kitty that Johnny wasn't really interested in her, and was just stringing her along to get money and sex out of her. It was pretty obvious, but I guess love is blind and she loved Johnny so much it blinded her from it. Maybe she was concussed since the movie makes it pretty clear he beats her on the regular and she seems to think that's normal, even though her roommate tells her its anything but normal. Then again I may be calling the kettle black here.

End of spoilers

The twists in the movie were pretty fun and felt unexpected but were all well foreshadowed. It was entertaining, but the ending is bitter for pretty much everyone involved. Our protagonist is left haunted and ruined by the end of the film. Whats interesting is there were so many times along the way to ruination that you, as the audience, could see Chris or even Kitty's "happily ever after" ending just around the corner.  But they kept making one bad choice after another making their own situations worse and worse. It really snowballed.

Rewatching the Corpse Bride with my 3yo and I have to say the first 20 minutes of the movie would make an absolute perfect Victorian Era Gothic Horror Story.

[spoiler]
A young man with new money parents is being forces to marry into nobility so his parents can be considered elite. Said young man is nervous about this obligation and even after he meets his bride to be he still fumbles the rehearsal, making a fool of himself. He takes a stroll on a foggy night into the woods by the old cemetery. As he laments his destiny and practices his vows he drops the ring. He finds finds it looped onto an exposed skeletal finger. A willowy veiled woman in white emerges from the shallow grave reaching for him. He screams and runs home. Over the course of the next few days as his parents pester him about the missing ring and as he goes about preparing for the wedding day, he sees glimpses of the woman in white. Haunting him, just out of reach. He sees her outside his window the night before the wedding and becomes hysterical. His parents think all these feverish outbursts are just him trying to get out of his obligations, or just per-marital nerves. The next evening as the groom meets the bride at the alter, the woman in white appears. In a ghastly voice she says "I do" and grabs the groom, pulling him into the underworld.
[end of spoiler]

But instead we get a happy ending and some jazzy skeletons.

Watched an oh so silly John Wayne movie called The Undefeated ... starring Rock Hudson as well ... it even has Merlin Olsen in it, and a few other actors that tended to play supporting western roles back in the day ...

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWZV5x4WAXs

Its about Unions, and Confederates, after the war is over, going south to Mexico, some to sell horses to Maximillian, and the others to provided themselves as troops.  They even celebrate the Fourth of July together, at the Confederate's invitation no less.  And it's got Banditos, Natives, and French cavalry, too ... yep, all a bit silly. :icon_lol:

I just watched Ghost in the Shell (96) and I am kind of left dumbfounded. I appreciate the atmosphere, setting, technology, and how other movies and video games have done homage to it, but I can't help but feel like the story is kind of clunky with an abrupt ending. Its not a bad movie by any stretch, but I feel like it barley touched on topics or kind of just brought them up without really exploring them. I don't know. Maybe its something that requires multiple viewings or maybe because its just fresh in my mind after my first viewing (literally finished like 5-10 minutes ago) and I just need to chew on it a bit more. Maybe I'm just tired and and I'm just not being receptive or thinking the right way. Again it wasn't a bad movie, it was definitely an experience, but I can help but feel like I was on a date and the date just gave me superficial answers to my questions. I'm sure they could have expounded a bit more, given more context on how everyone was feeling, or even how Kusanagi actually felt about the proposition at the end before it just kind of happened. Kusanagi didn't have much agency at the end there, it kind of seemed like she was forced into it and the result is happy with the decision but is it really herself that's happy with it?

[spoiler] Like did Kusanagi want the merge? What has lead to this moment for her to want this merge with something that's basically an AI in all but name? The reborn Kusanagi at the end seems happy or excited after this merge, but is it really something she wanted or has her feeling been overwritten by the Puppet Master post merge? [End of spoiler]

Again, maybe I was just too fatigued to sit down and watch it and I am just missing bits of information that I'd get on a second viewing after some more rest.

I just watched Johnny Mnemonic and wow. That was...something. I don't know what that something was but it exists. I liked the premise. A data courier encrypts and stores data in their brain to be extracted and decrypt when they reach their destination. This way it is under lock and key until delivered. Cool sounding Cyberpunk Corpo espionage set up. But then it goes off the rails and out of the theme park. Like half the movie seemed like it was made by the guys that made the Stallone Judge Dredd movie and the other half seemed like it was an early 90s made for TV sci-fi movie. If MST3K hasn't covered this movie they REALLLY should.  Some of the production designs seemed Hollywood and some seemed like a low budget college film movie. Random stuff just happens too. Like there was no real build up to any romance and then the female lead just kind of leans in for a kiss when Johnny woke up. Honestly Keanu Reeves is best part of this movie, everyone else is really hamming it up at a ridiculous level. I was shouting "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS MOVIE!" a dozen times especially near the end. I know Hollywood has been in a habit to remake movies and if there was ever a movie that needs it, this is the one. Keep the premise but change the story and make it a blockbuster.

The IT guy part of me found it funny how 160GB of space seemed like a lot and 320GB was considered huge (but then again Johnny didn't get the suggested upgrade). The ticking clock was a cool idea but his 24 hours to get the data out of his head before meltdown seemed to be more of a suggestion than a hard time. I was kind of surprised by some of the celebrity cameos/roles in here. Like Dolph Lungren as a killer Jesus assassin (Jesus Time! had me rolling) and Ice-T as the leader of the LoTek underground. Just a bizarre movie.

I finally made it through both Streets of fire and Savage Streets.
Streets of fire is an abomination about an unlikeable hero who sends a sidekick to fight for him and then punches his girlfreind. I threw it into a stack of charity store donations.
I dont know where to start with Savage Streets.
I also found a cheap copy of Heavy Metal [which i hadnt seen in 20 years] so i'm battling through it. If you must know, i picked up that juvenile boob-fest as i was more interested in HOW it was made.

Its a perfectly fine movie, like Jupiter Ascending.
Not your traditional sci fi, basically a fantasy story that happens to take place on Mars.

I just watched Ghost in the Shell (96) and I am kind of left dumbfounded.

I watched it about 20 years ago, and thats roughly how I felt too. I think its also a beneficiary of being at the forefront of these kind of ideas and questions - people weren’t making content like this really when they made it.

Finished watching V/H/S '94 earlier while working on even more terrain. It's fun, not the worst in the series.

Saw the last Mission Impossible movie this past weekend.  It wasn't terrible, although in places I did catch my self slipping out of the film looking for it to get beyond a point or two, specifically one chase scene that seemed a bit long.

Ha!  This showed up on youtube today ... a trailer for Galaxina from 1980 ... B movie quality at best ...

... not sure I could get through that movie if I tried.

Dorothy Stratten was in this movie at age 20, before being killed by her husband who she was in the process of getting a divorce from, and then he killed himself as well.
