Hi good people, greating from your neighbor in the cold north
After wanting a Kislev army since I first saw the ungol horse archers and winged lancers in a white dwarf as a kid, I have now finally taken the step and decided to build my dream army. After getting a lot of inspiration on this site, I thought I should share my army progress here as well, guessing there are some fellow Kislev fans and mad OOP army creators on this forum :::cheers:::
You can follow my progress on www.mandollies.com (http://www.mandollies.com)
I will update this thread when I add new updates to the blog.
Also links to two amazing army blogs I have used for inspiration that you should check out:
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=49600.0 (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=49600.0)
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=49073.0 (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=49073.0)
I have been starting on the units that made me want a Kislev army in the first place, the cavalry (more pics on the blog):

My next project after finishing up the first 6 units of cavalry is the Ice Queen herself, here is a little teaser:
-
Very cool! Is the Ice Queen an official GW model? If not, could you please link me to where I could buy that model? It looks awesome!
-
Three cheers for the start of your project! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
-
I already follow your blog. Nice stuff on it.
And we want more!!
In fact, this past week I've been working on Griphon Legion mounting this chaos marauders horses... I have to say that haven't been easy to fit them. So, guys, here there is much work than you imagine.
-
Three cheers for the start of your project! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
Same from me! :)
-
Thanks guys :biggriin:
@Duinila: The Ice Queen is a conversion project. The body and arms are from a Hordes warlock, Morvahna the Dawnshadow. The head is from the head vampiress of the coven throne with the crown from the original Kislev Ice Queen. There is also some greenstuff work in there. She is sitting on the throne from the dark elf dragon.
@Rogers Kul: Right back at you :-D Great that you have started on the Kislev forces and that you are joining the good chaos marauder horse club. It sure is a painful amount of work to get them make the horses look non-chaos aligned and make the riders fit.
-
Well GOGOGO, hurry up adn do more work so you can show her off already! :-P
-
Very nice work! Kislevites on Marauder horses Always look good, and this is no exception! :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers::: I am also really excited about seeing the Tzarina on a dragon!
-
For the dragon fans: https://mandollies.com/2016/10/09/candid-butt-shots-dragon-wip/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/10/09/candid-butt-shots-dragon-wip/)
I am also really excited about seeing the Tzarina on a dragon!
I always loved the concept of the ice queen, the most powerful ice sorceress leading a nation besieged by chaos with an icy fist, but she was not imposing enough. So she has visited Daenerys for a crash course in being more imposing, which in general entails: DRAGONS!
-
I am still working on the dragon, but it is a tough customer, so not totally there yet.
I have however managed to finish a troop of winged lancers: https://mandollies.com/2016/10/29/winged-lancers-troop/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/10/29/winged-lancers-troop/)
-
The Ice Queen herself joins the party! @Duinila: sorry it took so long
More pictures and some fluff on the blog.
https://mandollies.com/2016/10/30/ice-queen-exalted/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/10/30/ice-queen-exalted/)
-
That's beautiful, well done. I love the brown tones you've used on the dragon along with the ice blue, looks very natural.
-
Now if that isn't a proper ride for the Ice Queen, I don't know what is. Fabulous!
-
Stunning! Good choice of dragon. Where is it from?.
I´m in awe :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
Very cool! I've always loved Kislev. :smile2:
So you've glued the troops on big bases?
-
Thanks :-D
@VonOttenheim: The Dragon is a D&D attack wing dragon called Bahamut: http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/miniatures/dd-icons-realms-bahamut (http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/miniatures/dd-icons-realms-bahamut)
@Lateksimajava: Yes, I really like the multi-base look, allows for more dynamic posing, mini dioramas and looks cleaner than single bases + movement trays. I have based the army to be playable under Kings of War ruleset, but looks is the number one reason for multi-basing for me.
-
Very effective paint schemes!
-Z
-
Damn, that's a nasty lizard! Great paintjob and works really well with Katarina herself.
-
Thanks :)
The Tzarina now also has support from one of her Ice Sorceress sisters: https://mandollies.com/2016/11/11/kislev-ice-sorceress/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/11/11/kislev-ice-sorceress/)
A couple more pics and a bonus on the blog.

-
Very cool. Loving new ideas like these!
-
New wizard added, this time an Amber Wizard: https://mandollies.com/2016/11/22/allor-the-amber-wizard/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/11/22/allor-the-amber-wizard/)
-
This is probably the best looking Amber Wizard ever! How did you made it, with those birds, I mean? :icon_eek:
-
Think but not sure that the birds are from reaper.
-
Thanks :)
Correct, the birds are from reaper, a "murder of crows".
-
Great stuff. I get cold just looking at these
-
Finally made some banners for my Winged Lancers so I could count them as finished:
https://mandollies.com/2016/12/01/finished-lancers-and-ungols/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/12/01/finished-lancers-and-ungols/)
-
How did you made that banner? GS?
-
Looks a bit like this thing:
-
Yeah, it reminded me of LOTR for some reason. :-P
-
That's some great painting all the Kislev cavalry, and your mad batch painting all the horse's. The dragon is stunning, wish I'd thought of that before putting my Ice Queen on a Bear. Kind of wish we had made a Kislev army instead of Middenheim for storm of chaos.
-
Thanks :::cheers:::
It is indeed the Minas Tirith banner on one of the units, the tree representing Taal, God of nature and the wild.
The other banner is a slightly converted empire banner, with main dedication to Ursun.
-
I got my first two Kings of War games in this weekend with my painted forces. First report is here: https://mandollies.com/2016/12/05/battle-report-1-invade-1270pts-lor-vs-brotherhood/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/12/05/battle-report-1-invade-1270pts-lor-vs-brotherhood/)
-
Nice battle report. :::cheers:::
-
Thanks
Round two against the same army is also written up:
https://mandollies.com/2016/12/06/batrep-loot-1270pts-lor-vs-brotherhood/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/12/06/batrep-loot-1270pts-lor-vs-brotherhood/)
-
:eusa_clap:
Great job on that Tzarina model. I myself am turning a wood elf into an Ilsa for my niece. Guess I'd better make her an Anna too
-
Merry Christmas!
I gave myself three little bears for Christmas: https://mandollies.com/2016/12/26/sons-of-ursun-conversions/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/12/26/sons-of-ursun-conversions/)
-
Cool
-
Awesome looking cavalry! These boys mean buisness!
-
Also finished up two Urugan Cannons: https://mandollies.com/2016/12/27/kislev-urugan-cannons/ (https://mandollies.com/2016/12/27/kislev-urugan-cannons/)
-
Awesome. I love limbered artillery, for some reason. Never seen it combined with organ guns.
-
Truly nice pieces.
-
Fantastic work. I'm following this with interest
-
Great stuff! You've used Bronzino's Galloping Guns as the base, right? The Organs are dwarven or self-made?
-
Thanks
The carriage and crew are Bronzino´s, the crew have gotten some greenstuff furry hats and Kislev-y mustaches, while the cannons are indeed the old dwarven organ gun, with the most dwarfy parts left off.
-
I like the Urugans and their limbers! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
-
Great stuff, again.
The bears are awesome. Agree the sculpt is one of the best out there. (There are surprisingly many, actually.) Why are they left handed?
The Urugan cannons seem to advance at great speed. I've always wondered if the crew shouldn't sit on the limbers, in order to keep the pace.
-Z
-
Great cannons, that is a very tasteful conversion. Now...what's an 'urugan' again?
And, good job on 'de-cloning' the bears. That's a nice variety of poses now. I do wonder if the riders aren't a little out of scale, aren't they mountains of men next to the other kislevites?
-
Its apparently the desciption of the sound it makes when it fires :biggriin:
There is a little fluff text in the blog posts that give some more info on the two units.
The Bear riders are beefy, but not so much so that they are out of scale. They should be the biggest guys in the army, and they are clad in heavy plate which beefs them up a bit more.
-
This is brilliant ! Now I want one too...
[\Money leaving pocket emoji]
-
Got a bit side-tracked from my Kislev project because of the Gorechosen box arriving at my door. I painted up Vexnar the Reaper to test my scheme for the Gorechosen fighters. These guys are really great, IMO, the Gorechosen game is GW´s best production in a long time :closed-eyes:
Some more images in the blogpost here: Mandollies.com (https://mandollies.com/2017/01/18/gorechosen/)
-
Oh my God, I didn't see that bear unit before!! :icon_eek:
Impressive!!
Naitsabes, I think the Urugan cannon could be initally an idea from Gav Thope to supply Kislev of somekind of artillery. And it's possible he thought on the famous Stalin's organ (orgue?) used in the WWII, a mobile artillery (and cheap) weapon. A kind of this:
And yes, very similar to the imperial rocket launcher. But when Gav wrote about the Kislevite army list this model didn't exist yet.
So, for me, using this dwarf organ gun is completely appropiate. For that, Illumini, I question you: can I use your idea for my own Urugan Cannon? :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
P.S. By the way, fantastic work on Vexnar the Reaper (what about Valnir?!?!?)
-
Thanks
Urugan is probably = Organ, so "Organ Gun". In the unofficial, but well researched armybook I am using, it works on the same principle as the organ gun.
Of course you can steal ideas, it is too bad my army can´t join in on the grand battle of Kislev, so seeing some of my ideas there sounds great :biggriin:
What do you mean with Valnir?
-
Of course you can steal ideas, it is too bad my army can´t join in on the grand battle of Kislev, so seeing some of my ideas there sounds great :biggriin:
Good!!
I mean there was an ancient chaos character called Valnir the Reaper. The thing is, now Vexnar has stolen his nickname. I supposed Vexnar the Reaper is his official name, but maybe I'm wrong and it was you who named this model.
-
I see, well, as the last that was heard about Valnir was:
"He did actually show up in the End Times only to be decapitated by Wulfrik the Wanderer"
I guess it was about time someone took up the mantle :biggriin:
-
Made up a little troop of Kossars, lead by the buxom Mordheim Kislev Ranger
More images here: Kossar Troop (https://mandollies.com/2017/01/22/kossars-troop/)
-
I love the very crisp paintwork on the Kossars. BTW the modeling on the Ice Queen is excellent. Can't wait to see that painted up!
-
Thanks. Then I got good news for you, you dont have to wait long, as the Ice Queen is already painted (still missing base though). Take a look here: Painted Tzarina Katarin on Ice Dragon (https://mandollies.com/2016/10/30/ice-queen-exalted/)
-
Knocked out the Gorechosen champions + one extra psychopath to get them off the line so I can continue on Kislev stuff. Check out the blogpost here for lots of images: Gorechosen finished (https://mandollies.com/2017/01/23/gorechosen-finished/)
-
Do you have something somewhere that shows how you're painting?
-
Wow, that Ice Queen is amazing! But how does she stay in the saddle? And how does the saddle stay on the dragon?
-
The saddle is bolted to the dragon (dont worry, no animal cruelty here, it has thick skin). She is the most powerful ice mage in the world, she stays on with grace, skill and magic :closed-eyes:
@GamesPoet: You mean something like a step by step?
-
Nice kossars!!
Is very curious the weight that Kislev has in this forum, taking account the time they are ou of production.
-
I arranged special patronage ( or should that be matronage :engel: ) with the Tsarina .........................
-
:icon_lol: :icon_lol:
-
There is a tourney coming up this weekend, my first for KOW, so I picked up some steam. First out of the gate is a mounted Boyar.
More pics can be seen at the blog (https://mandollies.com/2017/03/28/mounted-kislev-boyar/):

-
I think it's a lot better than the base figure ,well done - big improvement :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
Quite a conversion - White Wolves Grandmaster works really well as a Kislevite.
-
Thanks guys. I have just finished one more of the old Grandmasters: https://mandollies.com/2017/03/30/champion-of-myrmidia/
(https://i2.wp.com/mandolliescom.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/champion_of_myrmidia01.jpg?w=876&h=&crop&ssl=1&zoom=2)
These guys modernize very well IMO.
-
Tourney army is finished: https://mandollies.com/2017/03/31/the-hunt-for-the-artifact-kow-tourney-army-list-pre-tourney-thoughts/ (https://mandollies.com/2017/03/31/the-hunt-for-the-artifact-kow-tourney-army-list-pre-tourney-thoughts/)
Detail shots of the three little bears coming up soon :biggriin:
-
Nice vision!
So now, only one thing remains: an scenic base (don't know if this the correct word... that for Armies on Parade!)
-
Great looking army! One of my favorite Kislev armies, for sure. :)
-
New battle report, which should be interesting for most people on this forum even if you dont play KoW, since it is a beautiful Ostland list vs my Kislev, so it features lots of pictures of empire models from different ages. There is even som fluff: https://mandollies.com/2017/04/22/kow-battle-report-kislev-vs-ostland-league-vs-league-2k-secure/ (https://mandollies.com/2017/04/22/kow-battle-report-kislev-vs-ostland-league-vs-league-2k-secure/)
-
I enjoy all your battle reports, though I've not played KoW at all. I think it would suit me from a modelling point of view so I need to take a look sometime - the idea that you just need to fill a base of a certain size with pretty models is right up my street :D
-
very nice :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
-
Thanks guys :::cheers:::
If you want to play ranked fantasy, I think you can´t do better than KoW Shadespyre. The ruleset is easy to learn, but there is room for tons of tactics.
Multi-basing is also amazing, both for looks, modelling and gaming. Set-up of the army takes no time at all compared to individually based figures.
-
A full regiment of Kossars are reporting for duty: https://mandollies.com/2017/05/17/kossars-regiment/ (https://mandollies.com/2017/05/17/kossars-regiment/)
-
Is that an Ogre in the background? Really cool looking regiment! :)
-
Nice work!
Perhaps a brigher flesh tone could help to enfasize the whole model. But even this, the result is pretty cool.
-
Thanks
That is indeed an ogre. It is from Westfalia miniatures.
The ogre actually has pretty light skin, but it is hunched over and has a big brim on the hat, so there is a lot of shadow in the face.
-
Finally managed to get some pictures of the Sons of Ursun. Short story and more pics here: https://mandollies.com/2017/05/19/sons-of-ursun/

 whoa
-
Holy cats!! Those guys are beautiful!!
-
Those are amazing! Nice work. :::cheers:::
Love the URL, too.
-
Holy bears!!
Mierce models are splendid, and this unit is really unique. Congratulations :eusa_clap:
Unfortunately, the resin quality Mierce's use, their really expensive prices and the bad customer's support, it's a bad thing.
-
Holy bears!!
😺👆

Bear cavalry... bear friggin' cavalry! I love them.

Holy bears!!
Mierce models are splendid, and this unit is really unique. Congratulations :eusa_clap:
Unfortunately, the resin quality Mierce's use, their really expensive prices and the bad customer's support, it's a bad thing.
The resin was alright in my opinion, it took a while before they shipped, but no major issues with my order.
Price is certainly not cheap, but now that they have started to have sales with often 30-50% off, it isn´t too bad either. The sculpts are really good, so I think the prices are ok for what you get.
-
I have not gotten to paint as much as I would like recently, but I have finished a troop of Droyaska: https://mandollies.com/2017/09/27/droyaska-kislev-weaponmaster-infantry/ (https://mandollies.com/2017/09/27/droyaska-kislev-weaponmaster-infantry/)

-
Another brick on the wall! :eusa_clap:
What's your plan? What kind of army do you want to achieve?
A picture of your complete army woud be welcome.
-
Great unit and great use of fluff.
I always thought Ulrika was a fantastic model, and one you see rarely in an army.
The other Kislevite figure that would fit well is the Bear Handler/Tamer - bare chest and convertible hands.
I have used several Horse Archer torsos on militia legs to create varied Kislev infantry, and they work well and it is easy to greenstuff some 'differences' with furry hats and trims on boots or jackets.
-
Always nice to see miss Magdova in action. Great looking army.
-
Thanks :biggriin:
The bear tamer is one of the very few Kislev models that I have not managed to procure. If I had him, he would certainly join the second group of Droyaska. I will get him at some point, I am sure :) Using militia legs is a good idea, I will investigate that route for conversions.
I have been thinking about taking another round of army pics now that I have added a bunch of infantry. I will finish up one more unit and then do a new army shot.
There is not really a clearly defined end goal for this army, it is a hobby project where I just add what I want to work on next. I have some units planned though. Another troop of Droyaska is partially painted, so that is probably the next unit up. Then I have some units I want for gaming reasons, which is a war altar of Ursun and two troops of ungol lancers.
Then I have the long list of units that will be slowly adding to the army, like more Kossars, a troop or two of Streltsi, kreml guard, Gryphon legion, Gryphon legion grand master, more winged lancers, Tsar Boris and other characters.
I also have a backlog consisting of the supporting Tilean heavy regiment (Braganzas, Riccos, Volands), the empire 1st mechanized regiment (war wagons, steam tanks, outriders) and the people´s crusade (fanatics, witch hunters, warrior priests, questing knights) that will eventually join my Kislev army in their northern crusade to stop the end times.
Aaaaaand I have started on the opposition, with a Norscan chaos army: https://mandollies.com/2017/09/23/the-norscans-are-coming/ (https://mandollies.com/2017/09/23/the-norscans-are-coming/)

Thanks Xathro :::cheers:::
-
Wow! Nice idea, great conversion and good painting :eusa_clap:
-
Beautiful army and that BSB strikes a very cool pose!
-
Love it bro, love it
-
really nice BSB, thanks for sharing steveb
-
Thanks guys :biggriin:
Second unit of Droyaska coming up very soon
-
I love the BSB too. And the marauder horse looks excellent!

-
@ Xath - Games Workshop...
-
Great job :eusa_clap:
-
@ Xath - Games Workshop...
Are those the original Mordheim figures?
-
They are indeed. Some of them have been converted a bit to make them more individual though
-
I have some, bare metal... I was thinking of selling...
-
Shoot me a PM with what you have and what you were thinking about getting for them, and we can see if they can join the great northern crusade :::cheers:::
-
@ Xath - Games Workshop...
Wow, that's a surprise. I never saw these particular sculpts. Impressive!

I´m about halfway through my speedpainting session, 27 down, 30+ more to go :)

Awesome project! Do you have any particular army composition you are aiming for, or are you just doing it unit by unit? Do you intend to keep using KoW rules?
It recently occurred to me that T9A Empire would work decently for a Kislevite army. They can get fast cavalry with heavy armour, spear and shield, which should be ideal for representing winged hussars. They get volley guns. Handgunner detachments will get a proper buff in T9A 2.0, that could be used to represent massed streltsy musketry. Only thing I can't think of how to place would be kossars, not if you'd want them to have both proper ability at archery and close combat.
-
Another thing. Have you looked beyond GW? It occurred to me that Khador from Warmachine may serve your purposes, if selecting the more mundane and less steampunky models. If not else then as bases for conversions. This gentleman, for example:
http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/khador
-
I actually have a large Khador army, so maybe that is what has kept me from using any Khador minis this far. I think I may buy some of their woodsmen to add to my next kossar horde though, as they fit in very well.
The greylords can certainly also fit in well, but I have no shortage of wizards, so they haven´t found their use yet.
It sounds like a perfect fit for lancers with that fast cav, but Kings of War is a great game, and now that I have discovered multibasing, I can´t go back :D
No particular army composition, I have some units I want for gaming reasons, which include a war altar of ursun and two troops of ungol lancers. I also want lots more winged lancers as I think they look fantastic when massed.

These Norscans look particularly menacing. I really dig your paint scheme - seems to work wonders for these guys. :)

The Commander of the Gryphon Legion has arrived (ahead of the actual legion). More pics and some fluff here: https://mandollies.com/2018/01/19/gryphon-legion-commander-tordimir-lubovasyn/ (https://mandollies.com/2018/01/19/gryphon-legion-commander-tordimir-lubovasyn/)

Not any news on the Kislev side, but I have a good excuse; the vile Norscan hordes have descended on the weakling southern cities. Fluff and more pictures in the blog post here: https://mandollies.com/2018/03/04/norscan-marauder-hordes/ (https://mandollies.com/2018/03/04/norscan-marauder-hordes/)

Are these the FW's Chaos Dwarves? They look badass! Like this whole diorama.
-
Not sure where the cultists are from actually. They are human-sized, they are just kneeling / bowing.
-
That lady cultist in the back, looks like a converted Augur from the Sisters of Sigmar range from Mordheim. Splendid stuff. :::cheers:::
