Historical Military Movies ...
« on: September 17, 2020, 08:28:08 AM »
This looks good!

Film clip of the Battle of Texel in 1673 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzOU-CRhDSw

It is called "Michiel De Ruyter", and sometimes internationally labled as "Admiral" ... about a Dutch admiral that some say was the best admiral ever.

And another clip ... the Battle of St. James Day in 1666 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A511io9iS6Y

And another ... the Battle of Scheveningen in 1653 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEdDu0KLX2M

I was telling some school children, literally two days ago, that the sound of the guns carried from the battle of St James' Day all the way to the Palace of Whitehall, 70 miles away! Who'd have thought someone would mention that same (relatively obscure) battle a few days later!

The movie is somewhat 'difficult' for a historian to watch, however. They get bits right, but then you notice massive errors like the English ships carrying Union flags in 1666, 41 years before the Union even occurred! The ships should have had crosses of St George, and even then only as cantons on the 'ancients'!

'Ancient (aka ensign), jack and pendant' were the naval flags - being aft, fore and top respectively. The first had a red cross of St George as a canton, the second was just the cross of St George proper. That jack, of course, became a 'Union Jack' after the Union of 1707.

I never will understand why film makers out such errors. So easy to get right. Indeed, I wholly believe that the film makers often know they are errors, but do it deliberately because they don't think their audiences will understand. They dumb movies down to the point of huge historical inaccuracies, even in petty matters like getting the right flags. They assume stupidity.

I got the dvd and funny fact is that in the menu you can choose 2 different age setting to watch the movie in.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

I find a lot of makers of battle movies get things wrong, and that is a bummer, especially when it wouldn't be tough to get it right.  However, if it is a decently made picture, I still enjoy them.  And some times they motivate me to read more of the history as well.

Just seeing those clips makes me want to read this book ...

Vaguely recall posting about a film that was about Dutch naval war battles of the late 1600s, yet can't find where it is.

So until that is located again, decided to start this thread.

There are only a few Australian films from the homefront of ww2 as the smaller studios had trouble competing with Hollywood.
I remember seeing a shot biopic 'Hunt angels' which was about Australian Z grade film maker Rupert Cathner. If he didn't embezzle from himself he might have succeeded.

De Ruyter and Cornelis van Tromp were really, really good. We Swedes got a taste of the dutch in their heyday during the 1650:s and then in the 1670:s when they saved Denmarks bacon. They supported Sweden until we had conquered East Denmark, what today is the swedish provinces of Halland, Skåne and Blekinge. Then they switched sides and backed Denmark.
What they were after was to get rid of Denmarks control over the Öresund (Öre strait) which enabled Denmark to tax shopping passing through.
Oh, and remember GW made it personal, not you!

Haven't seen that in so long, although it might be worth another viewing someday.

Besides Mel being Mel ... there was another actor in there that I liked, plus there was Sophia Marceau.

It beat out Apollo 13, Babe, The Postman, and Sense & Sensibility for Best Picture from the Academy.  Also received best director, cinematography, make up, and sound effects editing.

Lots of opinions about great duel scenes from film.  Have no idea how accurate this sword fight might be for that era, although here is a duel scene from a movie called "The Deluge", a movie about fighting in Poland during the late Renaissance ...  I've seen the hole movie, and it includes depictions of the Polish Hussars, it's quite good ...
